Pencil2D v0.7.2 is the current stable release checked on August 10, 2026. Download it from the official Pencil2D download page or the project’s GitHub releases page. The application is free, open-source, standalone desktop software with no subscription, trial period, or account requirement.
Choose the Windows ZIP for your system architecture, the stable Intel DMG on macOS, or the 64-bit AppImage on most modern Linux computers. Windows users must extract the complete ZIP before launching Pencil2D; macOS users should drag the application into Applications; Linux users must make the AppImage executable.

For the newest experimental builds, including current macOS Universal packages and Windows setup installers, use the official nightly download page. Nightly builds are automatically produced from newer source changes and may contain both fixes and new bugs.
Version note: the official release announcement is dated March 26, 2026, while the GitHub release listing shows March 13, 2026. Both identify v0.7.2, which is the important version detail for choosing the download. See the official v0.7.2 announcement and GitHub release list.
Is Pencil2D really free?
Yes. The official project describes Pencil2D as free and says it may be used commercially. The source repository identifies the project as open-source software under the GPL-2.0 license. You do not need to buy a license, start a trial, create an account, or pay for a subscription to download and use the official desktop application.

What Pencil2D is designed to do
Pencil2D is a lightweight traditional 2D animation application focused on drawing animation one frame at a time. It supports both bitmap and vector layers, with a workspace built around a canvas, timeline, keyframes, layers, drawing tools, colors, and onion skinning.
It is a good fit for:
- Hand-drawn cartoon animation.
- Frame-by-frame animation exercises.
- Storyboards and animatics.
- Short loops, classroom assignments, and educational projects.
- Artists who want a simpler starting point than Blender or OpenToonz.
- Linux users looking for a free desktop animation program.
The application also includes a camera field and camera movement, image import, sound layers, timeline editing, and export to image sequences and movie formats. The official user manual explains the canvas, timeline, keyframes, onion skin workflow, and camera controls.
Do not mistake Pencil2D for a complete professional production suite. The official FAQ says that a text tool, shape tool, and video import are currently unavailable. The v0.7.2 release notes also warn that the vector engine remains a work in progress and is not recommended for serious projects. Pencil2D is primarily a frame-by-frame drawing application, not a character-rigging, automated-tweening, or motion-graphics package.

Which Pencil2D download should you choose?
Windows
Choose the 64-bit ZIP for a normal modern Windows computer. Select 32-bit only when the installed Windows operating system is 32-bit or the computer is genuinely an older 32-bit system. The stable v0.7.2 Windows release is a portable ZIP, not a conventional installation wizard.
Windows 7 or newer is the support label shown on the current official download page. That includes modern Windows versions such as Windows 10 and Windows 11, although hardware drivers, security software, and system configuration can still affect startup.
macOS
The stable v0.7.2 download page labels the Mac package Intel and lists macOS 10.14 or newer. An Intel Mac should use the stable DMG.

On an Apple Silicon Mac, the stable Intel build is expected to run through Rosetta 2 according to Pencil2D’s v0.7.0 platform notes. It should not be described as a native Universal build. If native Apple Silicon support is more important than using the stable release, the nightly page currently lists macOS Universal and macOS Intel builds. That choice comes with the normal nightly-build risk.

Use the 64-bit AppImage on almost every current x86-64 Linux installation. Use the 32-bit AppImage only when both the operating system and hardware are 32-bit. The current download page also lists distribution packages and Flatpak commands.
The last explicit AppImage baseline in the release notes says Ubuntu 16.04 or newer. That is best treated as the last documented baseline rather than a promise that every current or older distribution will behave identically. Linux package availability, desktop integration, display servers, permissions, and codecs vary by distribution.
How to install Pencil2D on Windows
Stable ZIP installation
- Open the official download page.
- Download the Windows 64-bit or 32-bit ZIP.
- When the download finishes, right-click the ZIP and choose Extract All.
- Extract the complete archive to a normal writable folder. A folder inside your user directory, such as Documents or Desktop, is usually easier to use than a protected system directory.
- Open the extracted Pencil2D folder and double-click
pencil2d.exe.
Do not launch the executable from inside the compressed ZIP. The program needs the files, DLLs, plugins, and other resources that accompany the executable. Running it without extracting everything is a common cause of missing-DLL messages and failed video export.
If Windows marks the download as coming from another computer, open the ZIP’s Properties dialog and select Unblock, when that option is available, before extracting it. Pencil2D’s Windows guidance documents this step.

Stable ZIP versus nightly Windows installer
The stable v0.7.2 download remains portable: extract it, then run it. The nightly channel also offers Windows installers:
pencil2d-win64-<version>.exeis the recommended setup installer. It includes Pencil2D and the MSVC runtime, and can create shortcuts, file associations, and uninstall entries.pencil2d-win64-<version>.msiis intended more for administrators and managed deployment. It does not include the MSVC runtime.
Use the nightly installer only when you specifically need its installation features or a newer fix. For an important project, the stable ZIP is the safer default. Details about the installer channel are in the official Windows installer announcement.
Windows startup troubleshooting
Qt5Widgets.dll was not found
Extract the ZIP again using Extract All, confirm that the entire folder was extracted, and run pencil2d.exe from that extracted folder. Do not download a replacement Qt DLL from an unofficial DLL website.
MSVCP140.dll or another Visual C++ runtime file is missing
Open the extracted Pencil2D folder and, if present, run the bundled vc_redist.x64.exe for a 64-bit installation or vc_redist.x86.exe for a 32-bit installation. Do not install isolated DLL files from third-party download sites.

api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing
On affected older Windows installations, the official download page points users toward Windows update KB3118401. Bring Windows up to date rather than trying to replace the DLL manually.
Pencil2D opens but video export fails
Look inside the extracted application folder and verify that the plugins directory and ffmpeg.exe are still present. Antivirus software may quarantine the bundled FFmpeg executable. Check the security software’s quarantine and detection details; if the official archive is verified and the file was removed, reinstall from the official download page. Never disable Windows security permanently just to make an unknown file run.

How to install Pencil2D on macOS
Stable DMG installation
- Download the stable Intel DMG from the official Pencil2D download page.
- Open the downloaded DMG.
- Drag Pencil2D into the Applications folder.
- Open Applications and launch Pencil2D from there.
The v0.7.2 release announcement specifically changed the macOS package to a DMG and instructs users to drag the application into Applications. Running it from the mounted disk image is less convenient and can lead to confusing permissions or update behavior.
Gatekeeper warning
There is a small documentation mismatch worth explaining. The v0.7.2 announcement says the macOS application is Apple-verified and should no longer produce the unidentified-developer warning. The current download page nevertheless retains fallback instructions because some systems may still block or question an application.
If macOS refuses to open the downloaded application, first verify that it came from the official Pencil2D page, then Control-click or right-click Pencil2D in Applications and choose Open. On macOS 15 Sequoia, the documented fallback is System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. Do not bypass a warning for a copy obtained from an unrelated download site.
Apple Silicon Macs
The stable v0.7.2 DMG is Intel-labeled. Apple Silicon users can run that build using Rosetta 2, as described in Pencil2D’s v0.7.0 platform notes. Users who specifically require a native Apple Silicon binary should inspect the nightly downloads for the Universal build, while accepting that it is experimental and may be less reliable than v0.7.2.
How to install Pencil2D on Linux
AppImage method
The AppImage does not need to be extracted. It does need executable permission.
- Download the 64-bit or 32-bit AppImage from the official page.
- In your file manager, open the file’s permissions and enable Allow executing file as a program, or the equivalent option for your desktop environment.
- Alternatively, open a terminal in the download directory and run:
chmod +x pencil2d-linux-amd64-v0.7.2.AppImage
./pencil2d-linux-amd64-v0.7.2.AppImageFor the 32-bit download, substitute pencil2d-linux-i686-v0.7.2.AppImage. If the file still does not launch, check the terminal output for a missing library or desktop-environment issue instead of downloading random replacement files.

The official download page lists these package-manager commands:

sudo dnf install Pencil2DDistribution packages are convenient and usually integrate better with the desktop, but their version and dependencies are controlled by the distribution or its package maintainer. They may not match the current v0.7.2 release.
Flatpak
If Flatpak and Flathub are configured on your system, the official commands are:
flatpak install flathub org.pencil2d.Pencil2D
flatpak run org.pencil2d.Pencil2DFlatpak provides convenient application isolation, but it can introduce sandbox and display-server differences. Some recent community reports describe problems involving Flatpak, Wayland, and Qt. If Pencil2D installs but does not display correctly, update Flatpak and consult the Pencil2D community troubleshooting thread for X11/XCB-specific workarounds. Those are environment-specific fixes, not required steps for every Linux installation.
Fedora codecs
The Fedora package may use ffmpeg-free, which has limited codec support. For AVC/H.264 support, the official download page points users toward OpenH264; for broader codec support, it points toward the FFmpeg package provided through RPM Fusion. Codec availability is subject to Fedora’s repositories and licensing choices, so export results may differ from those on Windows or macOS.

Make a first Pencil2D animation
Once Pencil2D opens, create a small test before starting a large project. This confirms that drawing, timeline playback, saving, and export work on your computer.
- Start a new project.
- Select or create a bitmap layer.
- Draw a simple object on frame 1.
- Move to frame 2 and create a new keyframe.
- Draw a small change to the object’s position or shape.
- Create a third keyframe and draw another change.
- Enable onion skinning to see neighboring frames while drawing.
- Press Play to preview the motion.
- Save the project immediately before adding more detail.
The user manual includes a basic bouncing-ball workflow and explains how keyframes and onion skinning work. Pencil2D’s timeline is intended for this kind of direct frame-by-frame editing rather than automatic interpolation between rigged poses.
Save projects before you draw extensively
Save at least once manually before relying on autosave. The official FAQ notes that unsaved work can remain in memory and may contribute to crashes on memory-constrained systems.

It is a compressed container that holds the project and associated data. Older .PCL projects use a separate .pcl.data folder containing drawing and resource data. When backing up a legacy project, copy both the .PCL file and its matching data folder; copying only the project file may leave the artwork incomplete. Pencil2D also provides a project-file recovery guide.
For longer work, divide the animation into shots, cuts, or scenes and save each as a separate project. The official FAQ says Pencil2D can display up to 10,000 frames, but advises against forcing more than approximately 1,500 frames into one file because memory use can cause editor and export problems.
Exporting animation from Pencil2D
Pencil2D can export image sequences and movies. Image sequences are often the safer workflow for a long or important project: render the frames, inspect them, and assemble them in a video editor. They also make it easier to re-render only a damaged or changed section.
Important movie-export requirements
- MP4 dimensions must be even. The camera width and height must both be divisible by two. A canvas of 1920 × 1080 works; a dimension such as 1279 × 720 may fail until it is changed to an even number.
- Sound is format-dependent. MP4, WEBM, and AVI can carry sound. GIF and APNG do not store sound.
- Transparency is format-dependent. WEBM and APNG can support transparency when transparency is enabled. Normal MP4 and AVI codecs do not provide transparent output.
- GIF has color limits. Banding, dithering, and color loss are normal risks because of GIF’s limited color model.
- There is a 63-sound-key limit. The current movie exporter limits the number of sound keys across a project to 63.
- FFmpeg must be available. On Windows, confirm that the application’s
pluginsfolder and bundledffmpeg.exehave not been removed by antivirus software. - Export can use substantial memory. The exporter may use approximately 1 GB of memory, and long or high-resolution GIF exports can require substantially more.
- Use a local destination first. Cloud-synced folders, network locations, and external drives can cause export problems. Try a local user directory, and ensure that the destination has more than approximately 100 MB of free space.
If an export fails, first test a short section at a modest resolution in a local folder. Then check the format’s audio and transparency limitations, camera dimensions, available disk space, and the presence of FFmpeg. The official video-export troubleshooting guide covers these failure modes, including the exporter’s audio-range option.
Known limitations to consider before choosing Pencil2D
- No text tool: titles and captions generally need to be added in another application.
- No shape tool: geometric elements must be drawn through the available drawing workflow or created elsewhere.
- No video import: Pencil2D is not designed to load a video as an editable reference or animation layer.
- Vector work is not fully mature: the v0.7.2 release notes describe the vector engine as a work in progress and advise against using it for serious projects.
- Primarily frame-by-frame: it is not a character-rigging, bone-animation, or sophisticated tweening system.
- Large projects need planning: many layers, large canvases, long timelines, and GIF exports can consume significant memory.
- Export constraints matter: sound-key, codec, transparency, even-dimension, and FFmpeg requirements can affect the final workflow.
The FAQ’s semi-professional recommendation is a 64-bit operating system, an Intel Core i5 third generation or comparable processor, and 4 GB of RAM. These figures are recommendations for semi-professional work, not a formal universal minimum required merely to launch Pencil2D. A short, small animation may run on less capable hardware; a high-resolution project with many frames may need considerably more.
Tablet and pen troubleshooting
Version 0.7.2 documents several input-device edge cases:
- On Windows, if middle- or right-click dragging with a tablet pen causes a panning problem, hold Space and drag with the pen as a workaround.
- Some Huion tablets may show lag or inconsistent strokes. Pencil2D suggests disabling the Huion linear optimizer option.
- If a pen appears not to respond until an extra click, update to v0.7.2, which includes a fix for one such case.
These are specific workarounds rather than universal tablet requirements. Driver versions, tablet models, and operating-system settings can change the result.
Stable v0.7.2 or nightly build?

Nightly builds are useful when a stable-release problem blocks your work, but they are not automatically better. Keep a copy of your project before testing one, and avoid opening your only copy in an experimental build if the file is important.

For a beginner, student, hobbyist, teacher, or parent who wants to draw a short traditional animation without buying a production suite, Pencil2D is a sensible choice. For a long commercial production, a rigged character workflow, heavy typography, imported video, or mature vector animation, evaluate the limitations above before committing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Pencil2D safe to download?
Use the official Pencil2D download page or its linked GitHub release assets. That avoids the additional risk of third-party repacks. No download source should be treated as an absolute malware guarantee: keep your operating system and security software updated, and do not download individual DLL files from unofficial sites.
Is Pencil2D completely free for commercial work?
The official Pencil2D site says the application is free to use, including commercially. It is open-source software, and the project repository identifies it as GPL-2.0 licensed. The official desktop download does not require payment, a subscription, a trial, or an account.
Does Pencil2D work on Windows 11?
