Best free Christmas quilt patterns by project goal
Best first small project
Tree Tops, Christmas Greenery Wall Quilt, and Deck the Wall are sensible starting points because their formats are compact. Smaller does not always mean effortless: Deck the Wall uses fussy-cut ornaments, so the cutting must be deliberate even though the finished piece is narrow.
#1 Best Overall
- Features: Unique designs pre-cut quilting fabric
- Package: 50 pcs fabric squares
- Material: Our high quality, 100% cotton fabric is soft and breathable
- Size:10" x 10". All fabrics are trimmed by hand, which result in some raw edge and may have 0.5-1cm deviation exist.
- Easy to work with: These quilting squares are ideal for many sewing projects including quilts, cushion covers, costumes, wallets, purses, baby clothes, kids’ bedding, hand puppets, tablecloths and more.
For an editorial skill guide, look for large squares, rectangles, strip piecing, and generous blocks first. Half-square triangles, Flying Geese, borders, and basic fusible appliqué are reasonable confident-beginner steps. Curved piecing, foundation paper piecing, extensive appliqué, precise fussy cutting, and kaleidoscope construction usually demand more control.
Best traditional bed quilts
Nordic Delight is a substantial 79⅝ × 99½-inch red-and-white quilt built around Flying Geese. Twin Stars finishes at 84½ × 89 inches and uses traditional star blocks in a red-and-white palette that can work beyond Christmas. Urban Amish finishes at 75½ × 88¼ inches and uses Double Nine-Patch blocks with modern solids.
These are large sewing and finishing commitments. They should not be presented as quick Christmas projects, and their published dimensions are not automatically equivalent to a mattress size. Measure the mattress, desired drop, pillow tuck, and any footboard clearance before deciding whether to enlarge the pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBest large holiday gift or couch throw
For a large throw, compare Candy Cane at 68½ × 76½ inches, It Takes Two at 62½ × 78½ inches, Flannel Stars and Trees at 54½ × 72½ inches, and Holiday Blooms at 44½ × 68½ inches.
Candy Cane uses 2½-inch precut strips, while It Takes Two relies on quick-to-piece large blocks. Flannel Stars and Trees has only 25 pieced blocks plus setting squares, although flannel needs different handling from ordinary quilting cotton. Holiday Blooms combines strip piecing with fusible appliqué, making it attractive for a maker who wants a larger gift with a more decorative surface.
Best appliqué projects
Choose Spruce It Up Throw for tree appliqué combined with Rail Fence blocks; Holiday Blooms for appliquéd flowers and strip-pieced sections; or Prairie Blossoms, a 66-inch square top with large fusible-appliqué flowers.
For wall décor, Festival of Trees uses bold, colorful tree appliqué and finishes at 48¼ × 59½ inches. Folk Art Floral Wreaths uses fusible appliqué and machine blanket stitch and finishes as a 48½-inch square top.

Appliqué projects generally require lightweight fusible web, tracing or placement materials, marking tools, and thread suitable for machine stitching. Follow the fusible-web manufacturer’s pressing instructions; heat, steam, and pressing times vary by product.
Best foundation paper piecing project
Holly Jolly Christmas Quilt finishes at 44½ inches square and uses foundation paper piecing in red, green, cream, white, and black. Its pattern calls for lightweight copy paper, tracing paper, or another foundation material.
Print the foundation at 100% scale. Before sewing, measure the test square printed on the page; if it is wrong, correct the printer or copier settings. Moda’s basic-methods guidance explains the full-scale printing check.

Best fussy-cut designs
Deck the Wall uses fussy-cut ornaments. Christmas Candy creates an advanced kaleidoscope effect and requires matching sets of floral pieces. Holiday Sparkle uses fussy-cut centers and metallic holiday fabrics.
Recommended Free Tools
Fussy cutting can use substantially more fabric than ordinary patchwork because motifs need to be centered, aligned, and sometimes repeated in a particular orientation. Read the fabric requirements for the specific pattern before buying yardage; Holiday Sparkle, for example, changes its requirements depending on whether the centers are fussy-cut.
Best scrap-friendly patterns
Ruby Reds offers scrappy red-and-white star blocks in three versions. Polka Dot Fest uses 56 red-and-white blocks and finishes at 48½ × 54½ inches. Flannel Stars and Trees and Holiday House-Block Throw can also support a scrappy look.
“Scrap-friendly” does not mean that scraps alone supply everything. You may still need coordinated background fabric, borders, backing, batting, and binding. Sort scraps by value and scale first so the stars, houses, or trees remain visible.
Best modern or year-round palettes
It Takes Two combines aqua, red, and gray in large modern blocks. Christmas Glow Quilt Throw uses strip piecing in an aqua-and-mint palette rather than relying on conventional red and green. For winter décor that can remain displayed after Christmas, consider Icy Blues, a 21½ × 43½-inch narrow wall quilt, or Wrapped with Joy, a 30½ × 37½-inch Broken Dishes design.
Best traditional holiday color schemes
Deck the Halls combines poinsettia appliqué with red-green patchwork. Classic Christmas Quilt uses traditional holiday colors, metallic details, stars, and snowflakes in a 46½-inch square. Christmas Stars is a 48½-inch square design built from holiday star blocks and varied prints.

How to choose fabric for a free Christmas quilt pattern
Featured fabric collections are optional
Pattern pages often identify a collection from Moda, Benartex, Robert Kaufman, Marcus Fabrics, or another manufacturer. Treat that collection as an example, not a required purchase. Some featured lines may be discontinued by the time you begin sewing.
Substitute by preserving the design’s visual relationships:
- Choose a background with enough value contrast against the trees, stars, wreaths, or appliqué.
- Match print scale to the pieces. A large motif may disappear in a small patch, while a tiny print may lose the intended focal effect.
- Check stripes and directional prints before cutting; rotating a piece may change the appearance.
- For fussy-cut patterns, buy enough fabric to center and align motifs rather than relying on ordinary yardage calculations.
- Favor quilting cotton unless the pattern specifically supports another fabric type. Flannel, batik, and loosely woven materials behave differently.
- Test saturated red fabrics for colorfastness, especially if the finished quilt will be washed with pale backgrounds.
Precuts and fat quarters
When a pattern calls for precuts, verify the exact format rather than assuming all precut packs are interchangeable. Moda’s common dimensions are: Jelly Roll, 2½-inch strips; Layer Cake, 10-inch squares; Charm Pack, 5-inch squares; Mini Charm, 2½-inch squares; fat quarter, approximately 18 × 21 inches; and fat eighth, approximately 9 × 21 inches. See Moda’s precut reference.

- Pre-Cut Consistency:Each piece is a 10×10-inch precut fabric square (with a tolerance of 0.2 inches). These blue fabric squares serve as quilt squares, charm pack fabric, and layer cake fabric all at once; they’re ideal for quilt kits with fabric and pattern, and their uniform size supports seamless assembly whether you're using them as blue fabric scraps, quilting fabric, or authentic cotton fabric — including gingham fabric prints and other vintage fabric–inspired motifs.
- Cohesive Blue Palette:The full set features 25 distinct patterns — all rooted in a harmonious blue color family. This makes the blue fabric scraps exceptionally versatile: perfect as quilting fabric for modern projects or nostalgic pieces, as blue fabric squares for scrappy quilts, or as curated elements within precut quilt kits — with gingham fabric variations and tonal textures reinforcing both contemporary and vintage fabric aesthetics — all on premium cotton fabric.
- Quilting & Craft:Designed for real-world use, these quilt squares simplify every stage — from piecing to binding. As quilting fabric, they offer the trusted hand-feel and stability of natural cotton fabric; as precut fabric squares, they eliminate measuring and cutting; and as blue fabric scraps, they lend themselves beautifully to patchwork, doll clothes, pillows, and holiday decor — whether used alone or combined in quilt kits with fabric and pattern.
- Authentic Cotton Fabric Performance:Made from cotton fabric, This makes them suitable as layer cake fabric units, charm pack fabric selections, or blue fabric squares for intricate applique, gingham fabric–based designs, or vintage fabric–themed accessories — all while maintaining true cotton fabric integrity.
- Endless Creative Applications:In addition to traditional quilting, these blue fabric squares open doors to bags, home decor, toys, and more. Their blue fabric scraps nature invites mixing and matching; their precut quilt kits compatibility supports structured learning or group projects; and the inclusion of gingham fabric patterns, tonal prints, and vintage fabric–style motifs ensures relevance across skill levels — all built on the trusted foundation of cotton fabric.
Candy Cane specifically uses 2½-inch strips. Gnome Sweet Gnome is described as fat-quarter-friendly. For scrap-oriented patterns such as Ruby Reds, remember that the background, border, backing, batting, and binding may still require yardage.
Working with flannel
Flannel can give a Christmas throw a soft, warm appearance, but it may shrink more than quilting cotton, shed lint, and handle differently during cutting and pressing. Follow the flannel-specific guidance on Flannel Stars and Trees instead of applying one generic rule to every flannel project.
How much fabric do you really need?
Read the width assumption beside every material list. Many AllPeopleQuilt patterns use a ¼-inch seam allowance and calculate yardage from either 42-inch usable width or 44/45-inch-wide cotton fabric. The difference matters when cutting borders or long strips. Examples include Nordic Delight, Christmas Geese, and Urban Amish.
Download and prepare the pattern correctly
- Open the current 44-pattern directory.
- Choose by format, finished size, construction, and intended use—not only by the photograph.
- Open the individual pattern page and select Download this Project or Download this Pattern Here. These labels appear on pages such as Winter Wreaths and Nordic Delight.
- Save the PDF locally. Print templates and foundation pages at 100% scale whenever the pattern requires it.
- Check the current AllPeopleQuilt pattern-corrections page before cutting.
- Print or measure the test square, then make one test block. Confirm that the finished block reaches the stated size before producing the full set.
- Confirm whether the materials assume 42-inch usable fabric or 44/45-inch fabric.
- Purchase or cut the full fabric quantities only after those checks.
Finishing checklist: backing, quilting, and binding
A free pattern download generally explains the quilt top and construction. You still need to plan the rest of the quilt:
- Backing: calculate enough width and length for the quilt top, quilting margin, and preferred seam arrangement.
- Batting: choose loft and fiber according to warmth, drape, quilting distance, and washing plans.
- Quilting: the sample’s quilting design may be an example, not a required construction step. Decide whether to quilt at home, use a domestic long-arm, or hire a professional.
- Trimming: square the quilt after quilting so the binding can be attached evenly.
- Binding: allow enough length to travel around all four sides, with extra for corners and joining. The Utah State University Extension binding guide provides a perimeter-based estimate.
- Washing: follow the fiber and batting instructions. Consider whether you want a crisp new-fabric look or post-wash crinkle.
- Storage: store seasonal quilts clean and completely dry, away from direct sunlight and dampness; refold them periodically to avoid permanent creases.
Prewashing: a choice, not a universal command
Moda notes that cotton commonly shrinks about 3–5% and that flannel can shrink more. Prewashing can reduce excess dye and help fabrics shrink before piecing. Skipping it can preserve the crispness of new fabric and create more post-wash crinkle. Choose one approach for the project, and account for the likely behavior of all fabrics in the quilt. Moda explains the trade-offs.
Measure borders against the quilt center
Do not blindly cut border strips to the nominal pattern dimension if your quilt center has a slightly different measurement. Measure the center in multiple places, use the appropriate average or pattern method, and ease the border only as needed. Mismatched border lengths can distort the quilt. Utah State University Extension’s straight-grain border guide explains the reasoning.
What “free” does—and does not—promise
Availability can change. If a direct link fails, search the exact pattern name on AllPeopleQuilt and use the current canonical page. Do not depend on an old Pinterest pin, blog post, or file-host mirror without checking the original publisher. If the source page remains unavailable, treat the pattern as “availability needs rechecking” rather than claiming that the download is currently free.
Link to the original pattern and credit the designer and publisher. Do not redistribute the PDF or reproduce its complete instructions, photographs, diagrams, or templates in your article. U.S. copyright law distinguishes underlying methods and procedures from the original written, graphic, and photographic expression; U.S. Copyright Office Circular 33 provides the relevant qualification.
Frequently asked questions
Are all 44 patterns full-size Christmas quilts?
No. The 44 unique projects include bed quilts, large throws, lap quilts, wall quilts, and narrow wall-hanging formats. A 26½-inch wall quilt is seasonal décor, not a Christmas blanket, and a 63-inch square quilt is not automatically a full bed quilt.
Which patterns are best for beginners?
For a first small project, consider Tree Tops or Christmas Greenery Wall Quilt. Confident beginners can also look at Holiday Churn Dash, It Takes Two, Candy Cane, or Ruby Reds. These are editorial estimates based on the documented construction; your experience with accurate cutting, appliqué, triangles, and borders still matters.

Which patterns are best for scraps?
Ruby Reds, Polka Dot Fest, Flannel Stars and Trees, and Holiday House-Block Throw can support a scrappy look. Check the material list carefully: you may still need coordinated background fabric and substantial yardage for backing and finishing.
Which patterns use appliqué?
Spruce It Up Throw, Holiday Blooms, Prairie Blossoms, Festival of Trees, Folk Art Floral Wreaths, Deck the Halls, Gift Giving, Winter Berries, and Holiday Gifts Wall Hanging use documented appliqué or machine-appliqué elements. Check each individual pattern for fusible web, placement diagrams, stitch settings, and thread requirements.
Which patterns are actually bed-sized?
Nordic Delight, Twin Stars, and Urban Amish are the clearest large-bed candidates in this collection based on their published dimensions. Measure your own mattress and desired drop first; compare those measurements with the finished pattern size before cutting.
Can discontinued fabric collections be substituted?
Yes. The named collection is usually the sample fabric, not a mandatory purchase. Substitute according to contrast, print scale, directionality, colorfastness, and whether motifs must be fussy-cut. The replacement will not necessarily look identical to the sample.
Should quilting cotton be prewashed?
It is optional. Prewashing can remove excess dye and account for shrinkage; not prewashing can preserve a crisp appearance and produce more crinkle after the finished quilt is washed. Cotton commonly shrinks about 3–5%, while flannel may shrink more.

Can I sell a quilt made from one of these patterns?
The answer depends on the pattern publisher’s terms and your jurisdiction. A free download does not automatically grant permission to reproduce the pattern, images, or instructions, and it does not settle every question about selling finished items. Check the original pattern’s terms and obtain permission where required.
Do free patterns include quilting and binding instructions?
They generally cover the quilt top and construction, with finishing notes such as “quilt as desired” and binding instructions. You still need to source backing and batting and decide how the quilt will be quilted. The individual pattern page—not the roundup photograph—controls the current instructions.
