There are useful free Photoshop plugins in 2026, but there are not 20 modern, actively maintained native plugins with verified Photoshop 27.x compatibility. The best current choices are Adobe Camera Raw, SuperPNG, AlphaPlugins LaplacianBlend, Color Designer’s free core, and selected Adobe Exchange panels. The remaining recommendations are clearly marked as marketplace items to verify or legacy Windows filters that may still work but are no longer officially supported.
Short answer: the genuinely free Photoshop choices worth trying in 2026 are Adobe Camera Raw, SuperPNG, AlphaPlugins LaplacianBlend, Color Designer’s free core, and a few Adobe Exchange panels. The rest of this list is a mixture of older Windows filters and marketplace extensions that may still be useful, but are not all officially tested with Photoshop 2026.
That distinction matters. Adobe’s current desktop release is Photoshop 2026, version 27.8, while the latest Camera Raw installer listed by Adobe is version 18.4.1. A download page that says only Photoshop CC compatibility does not prove that a plugin works in Photoshop 27.8, on Apple Silicon, or on Windows ARM.
What counts as free?
This article uses free carefully:
- Freeware: no payment is required for the listed version.
- Free core: the basic plugin is free, but advanced features require a paid upgrade.
- Built into Photoshop: there is no separate plugin charge, but Photoshop and Adobe access are still required.
- Marketplace listing: the extension is listed by Adobe, but you should confirm its current install status and pricing before downloading.
- Legacy: the filter remains downloadable, but the developer no longer supports it or has only tested it with much older Photoshop releases.
A free trial is not freeware. Filter Forge, for example, is a fully functional 30-day trial, not a permanently free Photoshop plugin. Filter Forge’s download page makes that distinction clear.

Actions, scripts, presets, and brushes can be excellent free Photoshop resources, but they are not plugins. The entries below are primarily native filters, UXP or CEP panels, or Adobe-built components; each entry identifies its technical category.
The 20 best free Photoshop plugins and filters
Use the status labels as part of the recommendation. The entries are not equally modern, equally safe, or equally likely to load in Photoshop 27.8.

Best choices if you want something likely to be useful now
1. Adobe Camera Raw: the strongest all-round photo tool
Camera Raw is the best first choice for photographers and painters who begin with RAW files. It provides exposure, white balance, tone, color, sharpening, noise reduction, lens corrections, masking, and other non-destructive adjustments before the image reaches the main Photoshop document.
It is not a free standalone replacement for Photoshop. It is an Adobe component included with supported Adobe workflows, and using it requires Photoshop or another Adobe host. If you need the current installer, use Adobe’s official Camera Raw page.
2. SuperPNG: the practical choice for transparent artwork
SuperPNG is particularly useful for game art, web illustrations, UI assets, and painted elements that must retain clean transparency. It gives more control over PNG export than Photoshop’s ordinary save workflow, including alpha-channel handling and compression choices.
It is free and open source, with Windows and macOS builds. Its version 2.5 release is dated April 2022, so treat it as a strong free candidate rather than a plugin officially verified for Photoshop 27.8. Test it on a copy of an important document before adopting it in production.
3. LaplacianBlend: the best specialist for difficult edges
LaplacianBlend is designed for blending layers whose edges are difficult to isolate cleanly: hair, foliage, faces, smoke, and other irregular subjects. For a painter, that can mean combining scanned textures, photographic references, atmospheric elements, or hand-painted overlays without spending as long on a hard mask.
The vendor describes the plugin as free without limitations and provides Windows and macOS versions. The vendor claims support through CC2023 or later, and a Windows x64/ARM64 build is dated December 27, 2025. Because the public claim is not a direct Photoshop 27.8 certification, verify it in your own installation.
4. Laplacian Enhanced: useful detail enhancement
Laplacian Enhanced is aimed at increasing local detail and creating pseudo-HDR-style effects. It can be useful on texture studies, architectural references, and images that need more separation between fine and broad tonal structure.
The vendor describes it as free, but the current Photoshop 27.x compatibility should be checked when you download it. Use it conservatively: detail enhancement can emphasize compression artifacts, halos, paper grain, and unwanted skin texture.

5. Color Designer: a helpful color-planning panel
Color Designer is a good fit for illustrators, concept artists, and painters who want to explore tints, shades, harmonies, and stepped gradients without repeatedly building swatches by hand. Its free core covers the basic color-planning workflow; advanced Pro features are paid.
This is a panel-style extension rather than a traditional filter. Confirm the current marketplace or vendor installation route and check whether the free feature set still matches your needs before installing.
6. Free Skin Beauty Retouch: a narrow portrait workflow
This Adobe Exchange panel focuses on basic portrait cleanup and frequency-separation work. It may be useful for a painter preparing photographic references or cleaning a scanned portrait before painting over it, but it is not a general-purpose retouching suite.
The vendor claims Windows/macOS support and Photoshop 18.2+, while the Adobe listing identifies it as free. Those claims do not establish Photoshop 27.8 compatibility, so install it only after checking the live listing.

7. Export All Text for PSD: practical for collaborative files
When a PSD contains many labels, captions, or interface strings, exporting text layers can simplify translation, copy review, and handoff. Export All Text for PSD is more useful for production and localization than for image effects.
Because Adobe Exchange listings can change, confirm that the extension is still installable and free. Also check whether it preserves layer names, hidden text, paragraph text, and the encoding required by your workflow.
8. Reflections 2: novelty effects with a specific use
Reflections 2 is aimed at reflection, glitter, and sparkle effects. It can be useful for stylized lettering, water highlights, decorative illustrations, and atmospheric accents, but it is an effect tool rather than a core painting utility.
The non-JavaScript Adobe Exchange page does not expose enough current pricing or compatibility information to treat it as fully verified. Check the live listing before downloading and test on a duplicate layer.

j2k is a specialist import/export plugin for JPEG 2000. It is free and listed by Adobe, but most Photoshop users will never need it. Consider it when a client, archive, imaging pipeline, or delivery specification requires JPEG 2000.
It is a niche, legacy option. Verify that the current build loads in your Photoshop version and that it supports the specific JPEG 2000 profile you need.

Free legacy filters that may still be worth trying
These filters can be fun or genuinely useful, especially on a Windows machine, but they belong in a separate category. They are old, and their pages do not prove Photoshop 27.8 compatibility. Keep installers, test them on non-critical files, and be prepared to remove them.
Richard Rosenman filters
Evaluate performs rule-based color and pixel operations. It is freeware for Windows 64-bit, version 1.4, released in 2015, with official documentation listing Windows 11 and Photoshop CS5/CC compatibility.
Recommended Free Tools
Diffuse creates sub-pixel diffusion and supports 8-bit and 16-bit workflows according to its official page. Pixelate provides pixelation with cell-outline controls. Grid Generator creates custom grids and patterns, while Superformula generates procedural geometric shapes.
These are most attractive to Windows users who want unusual controls that are absent from Photoshop’s standard filters. They are not a good first choice for a cross-platform studio, and 64-bit Windows support does not mean Windows ARM64 support.
VanDerLee filters
VanDerLee’s FilterOptix, Halftone, OldMovie, and SnowScape remain interesting freeware options for Windows users. They cover digital lens effects, halftone and dithering, film damage, and simulated snow.
The important qualification is that the company no longer sells or supports its plugins. Compatibility testing ends at Photoshop CC 2017. They may work on some current Windows installations, but they should be regarded as experiments, not supported Photoshop 2026 tools.

Mehdi Curves 3
Mehdi Curves 3 is a free 64-bit filter for quick contrast, brightness, bias, and automatic equalization effects. Its interface and behavior appeal to users who want fast, stylized tonal changes rather than a long manual adjustment workflow.
The site’s last update was March 2017, so compatibility with Photoshop 27.8 is unverified. Save a duplicate first and do not install it on a production workstation without testing.
Replacement candidate: Harry’s Filters
Harry’s Filters is a Windows freeware pack containing 69 effects. It is a possible alternative for users who want a broad legacy effect collection, but modern Photoshop compatibility should be tested rather than assumed. It is not a verified current replacement for every filter in this list.
Installation: the safest route for each plugin type
Marketplace and UXP panels
- Install Photoshop first.
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Choose
Stock & Marketplace > Plugins. - Search for the extension.
- Select
Get,Buy, or the displayed installation option. - Restart Photoshop if prompted.
- Open the extension from Photoshop’s
Pluginsmenu orPlugins Panel.
You can also use Photoshop’s Plugins > Browse Plugins and Plugins > Manage Plugins commands. Adobe documents the current process in its Photoshop Marketplace instructions and Creative Cloud installation instructions.

Windows ARM users need an extra check: Adobe says the Stock & Marketplace tab may be unavailable in Creative Cloud desktop on Windows ARM. If that happens, look for a direct vendor installer or an ARM64 build, and do not assume that a normal Intel 64-bit plugin will behave identically under emulation.
Traditional .8bf filters
Use the vendor installer whenever one exists. Adobe specifically warns against dragging old plugins from a previous Photoshop installation into a new one. Shared plugin locations are:

Some installations also use version-specific folders:

After copying or installing a filter, relaunch Photoshop and look under Filter > [vendor name]. If a manual installer asks for a host folder, choose the folder intended for Photoshop rather than an unrelated Adobe application.
The Rosenman installation documentation describes manual .8bf copying and notes that a filter may be unavailable or greyed out when it does not support the current image color depth. Read the official installation notes before copying files.

The plugin does not appear
- Restart Photoshop completely.
- Check
Plugins > Manage Pluginsfor panels and marketplace extensions. - Confirm that a traditional filter is in the correct shared or version-specific plugin folder.
- Check whether the plugin is a panel, filter, action, or script; each appears in a different Photoshop area.
- Reinstall from the vendor instead of copying files from an older Photoshop installation.
Photoshop crashes during startup
Hold Shift while launching Photoshop and choose Skip loading optional and third-party plug-ins. If Photoshop then opens, disable or remove the suspected extension and relaunch normally. Adobe’s crash and freeze troubleshooting guide covers this recovery path.
The filter is greyed out
Make a copy of the document and test it in RGB with 8-bit or 16-bit channels. Some filters do not support CMYK, grayscale, 32-bit documents, unusual channel configurations, or particular layer types. A greyed-out command does not automatically mean the installation failed.
A Mac plugin fails to load
Check whether the build supports Intel, Apple Silicon, or Rosetta. The phrase macOS compatible does not automatically mean Apple Silicon native. An older Intel-only filter may require Rosetta, and some old filters may not work at all on current macOS releases.
A Windows ARM plugin fails
Look for an explicit ARM64 build. Ordinary 64-bit Intel plugins may run through emulation, but that is not guaranteed and does not establish support. LaplacianBlend is the entry in this list whose dossier specifically identifies a Windows x64/ARM64 build dated December 27, 2025.
The plugin disappeared after a Photoshop update
Reinstall it into Adobe’s shared Creative Cloud plugin location, then restart Photoshop. Adobe notes that third-party plugins may need to be reinstalled after major Photoshop updates. See Adobe’s update guidance.

The result damages the artwork
Duplicate the layer before applying a traditional filter, or convert the layer to a Smart Object when the filter supports Smart Filters. Not every older plugin supports Smart Filters, and some workflows rasterize the result. Keep the original layer hidden so you can reduce opacity, mask the effect, or return to the unedited version.
What not to download when you want a free plugin
Several popular roundups blur the difference between freeware, a trial, and a free action. Website Planet’s list, for example, labels Luminar Neo, ON1 Effects, GuideGuide, Dehancer, Eye Candy, and Boris FX Optics as free trials; it identifies Topaz Gigapixel, Lumenzia, BrushBox, Raya Pro, and RNI All Films 5 as not free; and it includes free actions that are not plugins. Use its roundup for discovery only, not as proof of permanent zero-cost access.

DxO now sells Nik Collection, while Google’s legacy version is unsupported and may freeze or crash on current systems. Adobe’s third-party plugin list is a better starting point for understanding the current situation.
The Pexels Photoshop plugin is also frequently repeated in old lists. Pexels’ current official Apps & Plugins page lists integrations such as Figma, Sketch, Google Slides, Office, and browser apps, but no Photoshop plugin. Do not install an unverified download merely because an old article still links to it.
How to choose one or two
- Photographer: start with Camera Raw. Add SuperPNG if transparent exports are part of your delivery workflow.
- Digital painter or illustrator: try Color Designer for palette construction and LaplacianBlend for combining photographic or scanned elements.
- Portrait retoucher: test Free Skin Beauty Retouch, but keep the original layer and verify the Adobe Exchange listing first.
- Texture or poster artist: consider Halftone, OldMovie, Pixelate, or SuperPNG, with the understanding that most effect filters are legacy.
- Windows user seeking unusual controls: try the Rosenman filters, Mehdi Curves 3, or Harry’s Filters on duplicate documents. These are experimental legacy tools, not current supported extensions.
- Apple Silicon user: prioritize a current vendor installer or Adobe Marketplace panel and demand explicit architecture information. Do not treat a generic macOS label as native Apple Silicon support.
- Windows ARM user: look for ARM64 builds and expect Creative Cloud Marketplace limitations. LaplacianBlend has an explicitly dated ARM64 build; other entries require verification.
Final compatibility checklist
Before installing any free Photoshop plugin, record the Photoshop version, operating system, CPU architecture, document color mode, and the plugin’s last update. Confirm the following:
- Is it permanent freeware, a free core, a trial, or merely a free download with unclear licensing?
- Is the download hosted by the developer or listed in Adobe Exchange?
- Does the vendor name a specific Photoshop release, or only say CC?
- Does macOS support Intel, Apple Silicon, or Rosetta?
- Does Windows support x64, ARM64, or only an older 32-bit host?
- Does it work in RGB, CMYK, grayscale, 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit documents?
- Does the license permit commercial use?
- Can you remove it safely if Photoshop becomes unstable?
Zero-dollar software does not automatically grant commercial-use rights, redistribution rights, ongoing maintenance, or compatibility with every Photoshop document type. Check the license and test the exact build you plan to use.

Is Filter Forge free?
No. Filter Forge is a fully functional 30-day trial, not a permanently free plugin. A free download or demo should not be described as freeware.
Do these plugins work with Photoshop 2026?
Photoshop 2026 is version 27.8 according to Adobe’s current desktop release page. Most older plugins only claim compatibility with Photoshop CC or earlier, so that wording does not prove support for 27.8.
Do free Photoshop plugins work on Apple Silicon Macs?
