Here is the reliable way to carve a classic jack-o’-lantern: wash the pumpkin before cutting, keep carving under adult control, make the face bold and simple, and finish with a flameless light.
A classic jack-o’-lantern is straightforward: start with a sound pumpkin, wash it before cutting, let an adult do the cutting, use a simple face with generous openings, and light it with a flameless battery-operated light. Carve close to the night you plan to display it—especially if the weather is warm—because a cut pumpkin can mold and collapse quickly.

1. Choose a pumpkin made for carving
Look for a pumpkin that feels firm, has a hard rind and bright, even color, and sits securely. Pass on pumpkins with cracks, bruises, soft spots, or other visible damage.
Large jack-o’-lantern pumpkins are excellent decorative carving material, but they are usually not the best choice for pie; smaller pie pumpkins are generally better for cooking. If you plan to roast the seeds, make that a separate food-preparation project. Do not eat seeds from a pumpkin that has already been carved and left outdoors.
2. Set out the right supplies
- A firm carving pumpkin
- Marker or pen
- Spoon, scraper, or cleaning tool
- A purpose-made pumpkin-carving tool or kit; depending on the design and the adult’s skill, a knife, apple corer, or drill may also be useful
- Paper towels or clean cloths
- A protected, stable work surface
- Optional paper template and tape
- A battery-operated flameless light for the finished display
If you buy a pumpkin carving kit, choose tools that suit the design you actually plan to make and include a useful scraper. Treat every sharp tool as an adult tool. If a kit or light includes button-cell batteries, check that the battery compartment is secured and review current product safety information before use; product designs and recalls can change.
3. Wash the pumpkin and prepare the workspace
Wash your hands. Before you draw or cut, rinse the intact pumpkin thoroughly under running water. Use a clean produce brush on its firm outer surface, then dry it with a clean cloth or paper towel. This removes surface dirt before a tool carries it into the flesh.

Set the pumpkin on a clean, level surface where it cannot roll. Keep sharp tools out of children’s hands. Children can participate in the creative and non-sharp parts of the project, but an adult should remain responsible for cutting and for deciding which jobs match each person’s age and ability.
4. Decide where the opening goes, then draw the face
Choose the opening before you design the face:
- Top: the familiar lid arrangement.
- Bottom: useful when you want to place the pumpkin over a small flameless light.
- Side: helpful when the design or stem should remain uninterrupted.
For a first classic jack-o’-lantern, draw two eyes, a nose, and a wide mouth directly on the skin with a marker. Larger shapes are easier to cut and read more clearly from the sidewalk than intricate, narrow details.
Using a template? Tape it flat to the pumpkin. Transfer the design by making closely spaced small marks along the outline, remove the paper, and connect the marks only where needed.
5. Open, scoop, and scrape
An adult should cut the chosen opening while the pumpkin is stable. Lift away the cut section, then use a spoon or scraper to remove the seeds and stringy pulp. Wipe your hands, the outside of the pumpkin, and the tools as you work: pumpkin pulp gets slippery and makes handling less controlled.

Next, scrape the inside wall behind the face until it is thinner and more even. Focus on the areas behind the marked features; that makes the later cuts easier without weakening parts of the pumpkin you want to keep.
Optional: save the seeds
Separate seeds from the pulp, rinse away clinging fiber, and dry them before roasting. Use a tested seed-roasting method from a university extension source for timing and temperature. Keep this food step separate from the carved-pumpkin display: once the shell has been cut and the pumpkin has sat outside, it is no longer a good source of snack ingredients.
6. Carve the design
With the interior cleaned and the pumpkin steady, an adult can cut out the marked features. Work deliberately, keeping fingers and anyone else’s hands clear of the tool’s path. Remove each cut-out piece as the design takes shape; a spoon or scraper can help free stubborn pieces without putting hands near the cutting area.
A good family split of the work is simple: children can choose the expression, help transfer a template, draw the face, sort seeds, and wipe up; the adult opens and carves the pumpkin.

7. Light it and make the design visible
Place a battery-operated candle, tap light, or glow stick inside the finished pumpkin. Before putting it on the porch, check the effect in dim light. If the face reads as a dark block instead of a cheerful expression, enlarge a small opening or clean away bits that are blocking it.
For a painted porch display, let the jack-o’-lantern be the warm focal point: place it against a darker backdrop, group it with uncarved pumpkins of different sizes, or flank it with painted planters. Keep any paint, paper decorations, fabric, and dry foliage clear of any heat source. A flameless light makes that styling much simpler.
8. Display it at the right time—and know when to discard it
Carve as near as practical to the intended display date. Warm weather accelerates deterioration, and a carved pumpkin may mold or collapse sooner than expected. Keep an eye on it rather than relying on a promised number of display days.
Set it somewhere stable, where it will not be knocked over and where the light and battery compartment remain protected from weather. Inspect the pumpkin before each evening’s display. Discard it when it is visibly spoiled, badly moldy, collapsing, or otherwise no longer suitable for the porch.
