Diamond painting is a coded mosaic craft: match symbols on an adhesive, pre-printed canvas to labeled resin drills, then press the drills into place with an applicator. Work in small sections, keep the protective film over unused adhesive, and follow your kit’s instructions because tools and labels vary by brand.
This guide covers setup, matching and placing drills, pausing safely, and optional finishing choices. Sealing and rolling are not required.

Unpack the kit and spread the canvas on a clean, level surface where it can stay undisturbed. Keep the printed chart or legend visible, and leave drill bags contained until you need them. A kit commonly includes an adhesive canvas, labeled drill packets, and an applicator or tweezers; wax and a grooved tray may also be included.

If the canvas curls from being rolled in its packaging, gently roll it in the opposite direction to help it lie flatter. Do not crease it or press on uncovered adhesive.
2. Match one canvas symbol to its drill packet
Choose a symbol in the area you want to work on. Find it on the canvas legend, then locate the drill packet with the corresponding code. Use the legend rather than apparent color alone; chart layouts and labels vary by kit.
Pour a small amount of that drill color into the tray, if your kit includes one. Gently shake the tray until the drills settle into its grooves with their faceted sides facing up. This makes them easier to pick up.

3. Load the applicator
If your kit uses a wax-loaded pen, press its tip into the wax, then touch the tip to the faceted side of one drill to lift it. Some kits use tweezers instead; follow the kit’s instructions for its tools.

If a drill drops or sits upside down in the tray, set it aside or shake the tray again rather than forcing an awkward pickup.
4. Peel back only a small section of the protective film
Lift the protective film only from the portion you plan to work on. Keep the rest attached so the adhesive stays protected from dust, lint, hair, and accidental contact.
You can begin in a corner or start with a color that appears often. These are organizational choices, not rules; there is no universal starting corner or color order.

- Pick up one drill with the applicator or tweezers.
- Position it over the matching printed symbol on the exposed adhesive.
- Press it gently into place.
- Continue through the exposed area, checking the legend when a symbol is unfamiliar.
Work one color at a time if that helps you stay organized, or finish a small area using several colors. Both approaches work. Aim for neat rows and even spacing; minor alignment differences can often be corrected while the area is accessible.

When you finish a color or section, choose another code and repeat: identify the symbol, prepare a small amount of its drills, and place them on the corresponding symbols. Continue until the design is filled.
6. Protect the canvas when you pause
Before taking a break, lay the protective cover back over exposed adhesive. Close or contain the drills so they do not spill or mix with another code.
- Keep food and drinks away from the work surface.
- Wash your hands after using art materials.
- Store spare drills and tools where children cannot access them unsupervised.
Small-parts safety: Resin drills are small parts. Follow the age and safety information on the specific kit. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises keeping toys with small parts away from children younger than three; closely supervise children using art materials.

Once every symbol is covered, inspect the canvas for missed spots or drills that need gentle realignment. A roller can be used lightly over the completed work to help drills adhere, but it is optional. Avoid pressing hard enough to damage drill tops.

Sealing is optional too. Some makers use a compatible sealer to help retain drills and reduce debris sticking to exposed adhesive; others leave a piece unsealed, particularly when displaying it behind glass. Follow the sealer’s directions if you choose to use one.
Frame or display the finished canvas in a way that suits its size and backing. Framing hardware is not included with every kit, so measure the completed canvas and choose a suitable frame or mounting method.
A simple working routine
Repeat this loop: expose a small section, select a symbol and its matching drill packet, prepare a small amount in the tray if provided, place the drills, then cover the adhesive before stepping away. This helps prevent mixed-up drill colors and a dusty sticky canvas.
