To make a freestanding Christmas tree napkin, you need only one clean, square napkin. Fold it into quarters, position the loose corners toward you, turn each layer into a staggered branch, and tuck the points into the pockets above them. A pressed cloth napkin will hold crisp creases best, but a thin square paper napkin works too.
This beginner-friendly fold looks especially effective at individual place settings. Use green for a classic tree, or match the napkin color to your Christmas table. The written instructions below explain each orientation change so you can complete the project without relying on a video.
What you need
- One clean, square napkin: A 20-by-20-inch linen dinner napkin is a practical cloth size, though other square napkins can work.
- An iron or steamer: Optional for cloth napkins, but pressing beforehand helps create sharper creases and improves the tree’s ability to stand.
- An optional lightweight topper: Try a paper star, small bauble, or place-card decoration.
For a reusable version, choose 20-by-20-inch linen dinner napkins or another firm, foldable cloth. Very soft or bulky fabric can be harder to manipulate because the finished design contains several stacked layers. For a disposable version, use square paper napkins that are thin enough to fold repeatedly. Paper and cloth are both suitable for this style of tree fold.

Before folding: press the napkin and find the open corners
If you are using cloth, press it flat before you begin. The goal is not merely a smooth appearance: crisp existing creases make the later folds easier to align and can help the finished tree retain its shape. A clothing iron or garment steamer is optional, not required. Do not press a paper napkin with a hot iron.
Spread the napkin on a flat surface with the front or visible side facing up. As you fold, pay close attention to the open corners—the corners where the napkin’s separate layers can be lifted. After the first folds, those loose corners must face you. Each one will eventually become a branch of the tree.

How to fold a Christmas tree napkin
-
Fold the napkin in half
Lay the square napkin face up. Bring one half over the other and crease the fold firmly.

-
Fold it in half again
Fold the rectangle in half once more to create a quarter-sized square.
Rotate this smaller square so it looks like a diamond. Turn it so the open, layered corners point toward you. The closed corner should be at the top, and the loose corners should be closest to your body.
Important: If the open corners are pointing away from you, rotate the napkin before continuing. This is the most important setup cue in the entire fold.
-
Lift the first layer toward the top point
Starting with the uppermost open corner, lift only the top layer and fold its point upward toward the opposite, closed corner. Stop short of the top point so a narrow border remains around the edge.

Fold the remaining layers into staggered branches
Repeat the same motion with each layer underneath. Fold each point upward toward the top, but stop progressively lower than the point before it. Leave even gaps between the raised points so the layers resemble descending branches.

As you work, tuck each new point into the fold or pocket immediately above it. The points should form a neat, centered staircase rather than a single flat stack.
Visual check: At the end of this stage, you should see several evenly spaced points running upward through the center of the diamond.

Turn the napkin over
Carefully flip the entire napkin over while keeping the layered folds in place. The folded points will now be against the work surface.
-
Fold the sides inward
Bring the left side section inward, then bring the right side section inward to overlap or meet it. The napkin should become a narrower, compact kite-like shape.
This is sometimes described as folding the napkin into thirds. Keep the center aligned and smooth the side folds so the shape is not twisted.
-
Turn it face up again
Flip the napkin back over. The layered points should face you again, with the top point at the peak of the kite-like shape.

Think of this as making a series of small pockets: the point of each branch goes into the fold above, which helps the tree hold together without tape, glue, or a napkin ring.
-
Secure the bottom layer
When you reach the lowest remaining layer, tuck it underneath the base or bottom fold. This final tuck helps stabilize the shape and gives the tree a more finished lower edge.
-
Stand the tree on the plate
Place the finished napkin upright on a plate or lay it at the place setting with the peak facing outward. Adjust the lower folds until the tree stands as straight as possible.

Video references for the fold
A video can be useful for the two moments when the napkin changes orientation: folding the side sections inward on the back, then turning it face up again for the final pocket tucks. Use the written instructions above as the primary guide, since the fold is still readable when a video is unavailable or difficult to follow.
One suitable external reference is Handimania’s Christmas Tree Napkin Folding Tutorial, published on YouTube on November 28, 2013. Its description says the project requires only a napkin. Another is OrigamiTree’s Napkin Folding Tutorial – Christmas Tree Napkin Fold, published on December 2, 2016; its description identifies the technique as suitable for one square napkin made from either paper or cloth. Hallmark Channel also has a video segment demonstrating a cloth Christmas tree napkin fold. These are external tutorials, not videos produced or tested for this article.
Troubleshooting the Christmas tree fold
The tree will not stand or keeps opening
For a cloth napkin, press it before folding and reinforce each crease. During the final stage, make the pocket tucks tighter and tuck the lowest layer underneath the base. A soft, loosely woven napkin may need more careful shaping than a firm linen or cotton napkin.

The branches look uneven
Reopen the upper layers before the final tucking stage. Space the points in descending order and leave similar gaps between them. It is easier to correct the spacing while the napkin is still a flat layered shape than after all the points have been tucked.
The napkin looks flat instead of tree-shaped
Check the setup. The napkin should have been folded in half twice, rotated into a diamond, and positioned with the open corners facing you. If the corners were oriented incorrectly, the layers may not rise in the intended direction.
The corners keep slipping out
Tuck every point into the pocket immediately above it rather than leaving several layers loose until the end. Finish by securing the lowest layer underneath the base. Pressing a cloth napkin beforehand can also make the creases more defined.
The finished tree is too bulky
Try a thinner square paper napkin or a larger square cloth napkin. The 20-by-20-inch linen example is a useful reference for a cloth dinner napkin, but the exact size is not mandatory. Very thick fabric becomes difficult to fold as the layers accumulate.
The topper falls off
Choose a lightweight paper star or small ornament. A paper star with the guest’s name can serve as both decoration and a place card without placing much weight on the napkin’s peak.

- Classic green trees: Fold matching green napkins at every place setting for a symmetrical centerpiece effect.
- Coordinated color: Use red, white, plaid, metallic, or neutral napkins that echo the tablecloth, plates, candles, or other decorations.
- Personalized place settings: Add a paper star labeled with each guest’s name to combine the tree topper and place card.
- Mixed but consistent: Vary the napkin colors while keeping the folding method identical for a relaxed, coordinated table.
- Reusable or disposable: Use pressed cloth napkins for a formal or reusable setting, or thin square paper napkins for an easier cleanup option.
No napkin ring is necessary. The layered pockets and final bottom tuck are what hold this design together.
Do not confuse this with a sewn tree-shaped napkin
This tutorial is a no-sew folded napkin project. It is different from the sewn Christmas-tree-shaped napkin described by Shabby Fabrics, which uses two 9-by-18-inch fabric rectangles per napkin, cut from one fat quarter, along with sewing and fabric-preparation steps. That is a separate craft project—not an alternative name for this fold.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size napkin is best for a Christmas tree fold?
A 20-by-20-inch linen dinner napkin is a practical reference size for a cloth version, but the fold does not require that exact measurement. Use any clean square napkin large enough to fold through several layers. A larger square may be easier to shape, while a very small or bulky napkin can be difficult to manipulate.

Can I make this Christmas tree napkin with paper?
Yes. A square, thin paper napkin can work through the repeated folds and is a convenient disposable option. Avoid paper that is too thick to fold cleanly or so delicate that the corners tear during the pocket tucks.
Do I need to iron the napkin first?
Pressing is optional, but it is especially helpful for cloth. It creates sharper creases and can improve shape retention. Use an iron or steamer for fabric only; do not use a hot iron on a paper napkin.
Do I need a napkin ring, tape, or glue?
No. The design is held together by tucking each point into the pocket above it and securing the lowest layer underneath the base. A lightweight topper is optional.
Why are the open corners important?
The open corners are the separate layers that become the tree’s branches. After folding the napkin into quarters, rotate it into a diamond with those loose corners facing you. If they face the wrong direction, the layered branches and final tucks will not form correctly.
The Bottom Line
For the most reliable result, start with a pressed, square napkin, keep the open corners facing you, space the branch points evenly, and tuck every layer into the pocket above it. The finished tree needs no special hardware—just one napkin and, if you like, a lightweight star or place card.
