There is no foolproof way to stop an online artwork from being copied, scraped, used in model training, or imitated by AI. The most effective approach is layered: register important work for stronger legal leverage, publish less valuable copies, preserve evidence of authorship, attach trustworthy provenance information, and use specialized anti-style-mimicry tools when their limitations are acceptable.
For painters, that means protecting both the physical original and the digital photographs, scans, portfolio images, and process files that make the work discoverable online. The four methods below reduce exposure or improve your position after misuse; none should be mistaken for a universal technical or legal block.
What each protection layer can—and cannot—do

Think of these as different jobs. Registration is primarily legal and evidentiary. A smaller web preview is an exposure decision. Content Credentials describe provenance. Glaze and Nightshade are technical experiments aimed at particular AI workflows. Combining them is more sensible than expecting any one layer to solve the entire problem.

In the United States, copyright generally begins when an original work is fixed in a tangible medium. For a painter, that can include the physical painting itself and, depending on the circumstances, an original digital illustration, photograph, or other fixed visual work. The U.S. Copyright Office’s visual-artists guidance explains the basic framework.

Registration does not create the initial copyright. Its value is that it creates an official public record of the claim and can be important before pursuing an infringement claim in federal court. Registration timing can also affect which remedies may be available. That makes registration a legal-leverage and documentation measure—not a technical instruction telling AI systems that they are forbidden to use an image.
What to register
Prioritize work whose misuse would matter financially or professionally:
- signature paintings and recognizable series;
- artwork already licensed, commissioned, or sold commercially;
- work scheduled for a major launch, exhibition, book, or licensing campaign;
- high-value digital artwork and the finished digital files used to market physical work; and
- eligible collections that can be filed through a group-registration option.
The Copyright Office currently describes a Group Registration of Two-Dimensional Artwork option for 2–20 published two-dimensional works by the same author. Its registration portal also describes group options for unpublished works. Those are not interchangeable shortcuts: eligibility, publication status, application details, and deposit requirements vary. Review the current visual-arts registration instructions before filing, particularly if you are registering a mixture of published and unpublished work.
Registration requires an application and a deposit copy. Keep a copy of what you submitted, the application confirmation, and the eventual registration number with your private records. If a client, gallery, employer, or commissioning contract may own some or all of the rights, check the agreement before assuming that you are the sole copyright owner.
For artists who want a practical primer before dealing with the forms, a copyright for artists book can be useful further reading. Treat it as educational material, not as legal advice or a substitute for the current Copyright Office instructions. If you find a suspected infringement, face a complicated licensing dispute, or need to determine who owns commissioned work, consult an intellectual-property attorney.
What registration cannot do
Registration does not automatically:
- stop an AI company from collecting a publicly available image;
- remove an image from a dataset;
- make a watermark or metadata technically enforceable; or
- prove that every later use is infringement.
The practical benefit comes later: a registration can help document your claim and may give you a stronger path toward enforcement. In the United States, the Copyright Claims Board is also a voluntary forum for eligible copyright disputes involving claims of up to $30,000. Whether that forum is suitable depends on the facts, parties, and eligibility requirements; it is not a replacement for legal advice or a guarantee of recovery.
2. Publish useful previews, not unrestricted masters—and preserve the originals
The simplest exposure reduction is to avoid placing your highest-quality, easiest-to-reuse file on a public webpage. Upload the resolution and detail a genuine viewer needs, while keeping the lossless master, layered source files, and process evidence private.

This will not stop someone from downloading the public version. It can, however, make that particular file less useful for some downstream purposes and preserve a better-quality original for licensing, registration, and enforcement.
A practical archive and publishing workflow
- Keep a lossless master. For a digital work, retain the original high-quality export and the layered working file when one exists. For a physical painting, retain high-resolution photographs or scans, along with the original painting and any documented digitization process.
- Make a separate web copy. Export a version sized for the intended portfolio, shop, or social-media display rather than uploading the unrestricted master by default. Choose the dimensions based on the viewing context; there is no single “safe” resolution.
- Preserve process evidence. Keep sketches, studies, layered files, reference photographs where you have the right to use them, export histories, contracts, invoices, and dated work-in-progress files. These records can help establish how the work developed and when it existed.
- Keep a publication record. Save the original publication date, page URL, account name, caption, license terms, and the exact file you uploaded. A simple catalog can include the title, creation date, medium, licensing status, publication date, URL, and registration number when applicable.
- Back up the archive in at least two locations. One copy should not be the only place your masters and evidence exist. An external SSD for artists can be one practical backup destination, but it should not be the sole copy; protect it from loss, failure, theft, and accidental deletion with a second location or storage system.
A visible signature, copyright notice, or watermark may deter casual unattributed reuse and can make the source more obvious to a human viewer. It is not a security boundary. Determined users can crop, repaint, remove, or reconstruct those elements. A watermark also changes the viewing experience, so use one when its deterrent or attribution value outweighs the effect on presentation.
Do not confuse this workflow with anti-scraping protection. A public image can still be copied, and a smaller image can still be analyzed. The goal is to reduce unnecessary exposure and make it easier to demonstrate authorship, chronology, and the terms under which the work was published.
3. Add provenance with Content Credentials when your workflow supports it
C2PA is a technical standard for attaching cryptographically bound provenance information to a digital asset. Implementations can record assertions about origin, edits, ingredients, and AI involvement. This can be useful when a client, marketplace, publisher, journalist, or collector needs more information than a filename or an ordinary metadata field provides.

What Content Credentials establish
According to the C2PA explainer, a valid credential can help establish that the provenance information is well-formed, signed, and resistant to tampering. In practical terms, a viewer may be able to inspect a declared sequence such as:

- which creator or tool signed the asset;
- when the asset was created or exported;
- which edits or ingredients were declared; and
- whether AI was declared as part of the creation or editing process.
That is valuable evidence and communication, but it is not an independent truth detector. A technically valid signature does not prove that the person entered accurate information, that an asserted creation date is truthful, or that no unrecorded event happened before signing. Provenance is strongest when it is supported by your private source files, contracts, invoices, and dated records.
How to use provenance responsibly
- Use a creation or editing tool that explicitly supports Content Credentials or C2PA.
- Describe the creation process accurately, including significant edits and AI involvement where the tool asks for that information.
- Check the credential after export and, if possible, after uploading to the intended platform.
- Keep the original credentialed file even if a website creates a new derivative or strips the visible credential.
- Store the credentialed file alongside the unaltered master and your source records.
Metadata and embedded manifests can disappear when an image is re-exported, screenshotted, compressed, or processed by a platform. A credential therefore complements—not replaces—your archive and copyright registration. It also does not block scraping, prevent training, or function as a universal opt-out.

The University of Chicago’s Glaze Project offers tools intended to disrupt AI style mimicry. Its related Nightshade project takes a different, more experimental approach intended to discourage unauthorized training on scraped images. Glaze or WebGlaze may be worth testing if your main concern is that a model will imitate the visual characteristics of your work.
Glaze: narrower protection, not a universal shield
Glaze applies an image-specific “cloak” intended to make style mimicry harder for certain models. The project’s official FAQ discusses transferability across tested models and resistance to several simple alterations. Those results should not be expanded into a promise that every model, future model, or attack will fail.
The same FAQ explicitly describes important limitations. Glaze was designed primarily for style mimicry and does not provide consistent protection against stronger image-to-image attacks, including some style-transfer and inpainting workflows. Someone may still copy the composition, use the image as a reference, repaint it manually, or process it through a technique outside the protection that was tested.

- Keep an untouched master and layered source file first.
- Choose representative paintings, including the colors, textures, and brushwork you care most about.
- Process a copy, not the only high-quality version of the work.
- Inspect the result at full size and at the size used on your website. Reject it if the cloak introduces visible artifacts that damage the artwork or misrepresent your work.
- Test the result in your actual publishing workflow, because a later resize or re-export may change or remove relevant information.
- Recheck the official project’s release notes and system requirements before installing. The homepage identified Glaze 2.2 and support for newer Nvidia 50-series GPUs in the supplied research, but software support and model behavior change.
Artists with limited computing resources can investigate WebGlaze, subject to its current availability, privacy terms, and upload requirements. Do not upload an unreleased master to any third-party service without first understanding what the service retains and permits.
Nightshade: an experimental training intervention
Nightshade should be treated even more cautiously. It is an adversarial or poisoning-style intervention intended to influence how scraped images may affect model training. It is not a legal opt-out, a takedown request, a copyright registration, or a guarantee that a named company or model will be affected.
One artist should not assume that a small number of altered images will reliably corrupt a major model. Training datasets, filtering systems, model architectures, and countermeasures change. Before using any such tool, test the output on copies, read the official documentation, and decide whether the visual or professional trade-off is acceptable.

Review the terms, privacy controls, crawler policies, and AI-use settings for every service where you upload, sell, process, or share artwork. A platform may provide a “do not train” setting, an opt-out form, or a robots directive, but those controls are service-specific. They do not automatically bind every AI company on the internet, undo copies already made, or control third-party scraping.

That applies to content submitted to those services. It should not be generalized to public artwork posted on an unrelated portfolio site or scraped by another company. Check the current terms and controls for the particular product, account type, and location you use.
As a practical rule, do not submit unreleased high-resolution art to an AI service merely to test a feature. First determine what the service stores, who may access it, how long it retains it, whether it uses submissions for improvement, and whether an opt-out is available.

A sensible protection plan for a working painter
You do not need to implement every layer on every sketch. Match the effort to the value and exposure of the work:

| Suspected AI imitation or unauthorized use | Capture evidence immediately, document the source and dates, review the license and platform process, and seek professional legal advice before escalating a complex dispute. |
Before you publish
- Mark the work as high, medium, or low value and exposure.
- Save the lossless master, layered source, sketches, and dated process records.
- Create a separate web export rather than publishing the unrestricted master by default.
- Record the title, creation date, publication date, URL, license status, and client information.
- Register commercially important work or an eligible group through the current Copyright Office process.
- Add Content Credentials if your tools and destination support them, then preserve the original credentialed file.
- Test Glaze on representative copies if style mimicry is a serious concern; retain the unaltered master.
- Review each platform’s current AI-use terms and opt-out controls.
- Back up the archive in at least two locations.
If you find unauthorized use
- Preserve evidence before requesting removal. Save the URL, screenshots, dates, account or company name, downloaded copies where appropriate, and a description of what appears to have been copied or imitated.
- Preserve the comparison. Keep your original file, source records, registration information, and the allegedly infringing output or page. If the use involves an AI-generated image, record the tool, date, prompts if available, and output URL.
- Read the platform’s reporting process. Follow the relevant copyright, impersonation, or abuse procedure, but do not assume a platform decision determines the underlying legal question.
- Get advice for consequential disputes. An intellectual-property attorney can assess ownership, fair-use or other defenses, licensing terms, jurisdiction, and the appropriate enforcement route. In the United States, the voluntary Copyright Claims Board may be relevant for some eligible claims up to $30,000, while other disputes may require a different forum.
Evidence is easier to preserve before a page disappears or changes. Avoid relying only on a social-media post, a filename, or a metadata field; use the whole record of creation, ownership, publication, and licensing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does copyright registration stop AI companies from training on my art?
No. In the United States, registration documents your claim and may improve access to legal remedies, but it does not technically prevent copying, scraping, or model training. Registration requirements and remedies vary by jurisdiction, so consult the applicable authority or an intellectual-property attorney for a specific dispute.
Will a low-resolution image or watermark prevent scraping?
No. A web-sized preview may be less useful for some downstream purposes, and a watermark may deter casual unattributed reuse, but either can still be copied, cropped, removed, repainted, or reconstructed.
Are Content Credentials the same as copyright registration?
No. Content Credentials provide signed provenance information about a digital file’s declared origin and edits. Does Glaze protect a painting against every AI attack?

The strongest practical plan is layered: keep originals and dated evidence, publish only suitable web copies, register high-value work, add provenance when supported, test Glaze only with its limitations in mind, and review every platform’s terms separately. These steps improve your exposure control and legal position; they do not promise that a public artwork can never be copied or used by AI.
