To tell whether Redd’s art is real in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, identify the exact in-game artwork and compare its New Horizons-specific visual cue with a reliable reference before buying. The collection contains 30 paintings and 13 statues, and some works have no fake version; do not rely on a New Leaf guide, because its forgery differences are not interchangeable.
This guide is specifically for New Horizons. Use the game’s item name to find the matching entry, then inspect the depicted figure, clothing, objects, pose, expression, and composition. The museum’s art gallery is the reason to seek genuine pieces: Nintendo support says island residents can donate items after Blathers’s museum tent is established.
How to check Redd’s art
- Confirm you are playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons, not New Leaf.
- Identify the artwork using the exact in-game name shown for Redd’s offering.
- Compare it with a New Horizons-specific real-and-fake reference. Check the particular feature listed for that artwork; there is no single tell that applies to every piece.
- Check whether that work can have a fake version. “Always genuine” means no fake exists for that artwork, rather than simply that the version you are viewing looks right.
- Buy only after checking. If you are uncertain, pause and compare again before spending Bells.
Visual differences can be small. For paintings, check the subject, clothing, objects, and composition; for statues, inspect posture, expression, accessories, and orientation. Treat these as inspection categories, not universal rules. Nintendo’s official materials establish the museum and donation context, but the complete list of visual authenticity cues comes from secondary game guides, not an official Nintendo authenticity matrix.
| Example | New Horizons check | What it illustrates |
|---|---|---|
| Familiar Statue | Always genuine. | Some works have no fake version. |
| Rock-Head Statue | The fake version smiles. | Check a statue’s expression as well as its overall shape. |
These checked examples are not a complete checklist. For any other painting or statue, consult an item-specific New Horizons reference and verify its entry before buying. Nintendo Life and Game8 provide New Horizons art guides; use a clear, correctly labelled image comparison when a written cue is hard to judge.

Why use a New Horizons-specific guide?
The New Horizons-specific references warn that its fake-art differences are not interchangeable with New Leaf’s. A tell from another game can lead you to misidentify an item, so match both the artwork and the game before comparing details.
