  • FAST WI-FI CONNECTIVITY — Wi-Fi 6 gives you fast access to your files, uploads, and downloads, and lets you seamlessly stream your favorite shows.

That distinction matters when preparing a painting reference, uploading an image, or sending a file that must fit a particular shape or size. The controls are similar on iPhone and iPad, but their placement differs.

Key takeaways

  • Photos is the simplest built-in tool for cropping, reframing, rotating, straightening, and choosing standard aspect ratios on iPhone and iPad.
  • Dragging a crop corner preserves the original aspect ratio by default; unlock the aspect-ratio control when you need a different shape.
  • Apple documents Square, Wallpaper, 9:16, and 5:7 crop presets in Photos on iPhone and iPad.
  • Preview includes an Adjust Size command on both iPhone and iPad for changing an image’s dimensions rather than merely removing its edges.
  • Shortcuts is the better route for repeated or automated image transformations, although available actions and controls can vary by iOS or iPadOS release.
  • Photos edits can be reverted, while exported or shared copies may have different formats, metadata, and file properties.

How to crop a photo on your iPhone

To crop a photo on iPhone, open the image in Photos, tap Edit, choose Crop, adjust the frame, and tap Done. Apple’s iPhone crop instructions describe both freehand framing and preset aspect ratios.

  1. Open Photos and tap the picture you want to change.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap the Crop control.
  4. Drag a corner or edge of the crop frame to remove unwanted parts of the image. You can also pinch open or closed to change the framing.
  5. For a standard shape, tap the aspect-ratio control and choose a preset such as Square, Wallpaper, 9:16, or 5:7.
  6. Tap Done to save the edit.

When you drag a corner in Photos, the crop normally preserves the photo’s existing aspect ratio. Use the ratio control to unlock that relationship when you need a different shape, such as a square reference image or a tall image for a phone screen.

How do you crop a picture to a square on iPhone?

To crop a picture to a square on iPhone, open the image in Photos, choose Edit > Crop, open the aspect-ratio options, and select Square. Reposition the frame so the important subject remains inside it, then tap Done.

A square crop changes the visible composition; it does not necessarily produce a smaller file by a predictable amount. File size also depends on the image format, detail, and how the resulting file is saved or shared.

How to crop a photo on your iPad

To crop a photo on iPad, open the image in Photos, tap Edit, select Crop on the left side of the editing screen, adjust the frame, and tap Done. The Apple iPad Photos guide documents the iPad crop and aspect-ratio workflow.

  1. Open Photos and select the image.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap Crop on the left side of the editing screen.
  4. Drag the crop rectangle’s corners or pinch to change the framing.
  5. Use the aspect-ratio control for a preset such as Square, Wallpaper, 9:16, or 5:7. Unlock the ratio if you need a custom shape.
  6. Tap Done.

The main practical difference is control placement: iPhone reaches Crop from the editing toolbar, while Apple’s iPad instructions place Crop on the left side of the editing screen. The documented workflow uses touch controls, so an Apple Pencil is optional rather than required.

What is the difference between cropping and resizing?

Cropping removes or reframes part of a picture, while resizing changes the image’s dimensions. Use Photos when the composition or aspect ratio is the problem; use Preview when the image must be changed to a particular size.

What you need Best first tool What the tool does

How to resize an image on iPhone with Preview

To resize an image on iPhone, open the image in Preview, tap More, choose Adjust Size, select the available size options, and tap Done. Apple’s Preview instructions for iPhone confirm the Adjust Size command.

  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Tap Adjust Size.
  4. Choose the available size options.
  5. Tap Done.

Use this route when “resize” means changing the image’s dimensions rather than changing its composition. Apple’s documentation confirms the command, but the exact fields, units, and pixel-entry controls can vary with the operating-system release, device, file type, and region. Do not assume that every iPhone displays the same size options.

How to resize an image on iPad with Preview

To resize an image on iPad, open the image in Preview, tap More, choose Adjust Size, choose the available options, and tap Done. The Apple Preview guide for iPad documents this command.

  1. Open the image in Preview.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Tap Adjust Size.
  4. Choose the size options shown for that image and iPadOS version.
  5. Tap Done.

Preview is the clearest built-in choice when a painting reference, upload, or other image has a dimensional requirement. If you only need to remove empty space around the subject, crop in Photos first; resizing alone changes dimensions but does not improve the composition.

Can you resize multiple photos at once on iPhone or iPad?

You can automate repeated image transformations with Shortcuts, but Apple’s documented workflow does not establish one universal prebuilt shortcut or identical action names for every iOS and iPadOS release.

A shortcut is a sequence of actions. A typical image workflow conceptually receives selected photos, applies an image resize or other transform action, and saves or shares the results. To build or adjust one:

  1. Open Shortcuts and create or edit a shortcut.
  2. Add an input step that receives photos.
  3. Search the current action list for terms such as image, resize, convert, or transform.
  4. Configure the available size or transformation parameters shown on your device.
  5. Add a save or share action so the transformed copies have a destination.
  6. Test the shortcut with one copy before processing a larger selection.

Apple explains transform actions in Shortcuts and uses image resizing as an example in its Shortcuts overview. Action names and available parameters can change, so search the action list on the target operating-system version instead of relying on a recipe made for an older release.

How do you make an iPhone photo smaller without losing the original?

Make a separate resized or exported copy when you want a smaller image while keeping the original untouched. A Photos edit remains reversible, but a separately saved or shared file is a different output with its own dimensions, format, and metadata.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

For a reversible crop in Photos, reopen the edited photo, tap Edit, and choose Revert to return to the original. Apple documents this recovery path for both iPhone and iPad. When iCloud Photos is enabled, Apple states: “When you use iCloud Photos, any edits you make to your photos and videos are saved across all your devices.” See the iPhone editing documentation and iPad editing documentation for the device-specific workflow.

If preserving the original matters, duplicate the image before making a destructive export or use a workflow that saves the result as a new file. The exact storage behavior depends on whether you save the edit in Photos, export through Preview, or share the image to another app.

What should you check before sharing a resized photo?

Before sharing, open the photo’s Share menu and tap Options to review the file format and the information sent with the image. Resizing controls dimensions; Share Options controls how the file is delivered and which supported metadata or original data accompanies it.

Share option What Apple documents When to consider it
Automatic Uses what Apple describes as the best file format for the destination. Use when the receiving service or app determines compatibility.
Current Prevents a file-format conversion. Use when retaining the current format matters.
Most Compatible May convert files to JPEG or MOV. Use when the recipient or service has limited format support.

Apple also documents controls for location data, iCloud Link sharing, and sending all photo data. Sending all photo data can include the original file, edit history, and metadata in supported sharing paths. Review the Apple Share Options documentation when location privacy or original photo data matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which tool should you use?

Choose the tool according to the result you need, not the word “resize” alone.

  • Choose Photos to crop, straighten, rotate, reframe, or fit a photo to a standard aspect ratio.
  • Choose Preview when the image must have changed dimensions and your device exposes the required size option under Adjust Size.
  • Choose Shortcuts when you need to repeat the same transformation or process a group of images.
  • Use Share > Options when the main concern is compatibility, location privacy, metadata, or whether the current format is preserved.

For a painting workflow, Photos is usually the fastest way to remove distracting edges from a reference image, while Preview is more appropriate when a submission or upload requires a particular image size. A larger iPad workspace can be useful for detailed framing, but the built-in touch workflow does not require additional hardware.

What do you need to crop or resize photos?

You need an iPhone or iPad with the relevant Apple app and a photo stored on the device or accessible through Photos or Preview. An iPad is useful if you prefer a larger screen for judging composition, but an Apple Pencil is optional and not required for the documented crop workflow.

Because Apple can change interface labels and controls, check the exact steps on the iOS or iPadOS release installed on the device before preparing a large batch of images. Preview and Shortcuts can also expose different options depending on the file type and release.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I resize an image to exact pixels on iPhone?

To resize an image to exact pixels on iPhone, open the image in Preview, tap More, and choose Adjust Size. The exact pixel-entry fields and units can vary by iOS version, device, file type, and region, so verify which controls your iPhone displays.

Can I resize multiple photos at once on iPhone?

To resize multiple photos on iPhone or iPad, use Shortcuts with an input action for photos, an available image resize or transform action, and a save or share action. Apple does not guarantee one identical prebuilt shortcut or action layout for every operating-system release.

How do I reduce photo file size without losing the original?

To reduce an iPhone photo file size without losing the original, create or export a separate resized copy rather than relying only on a Photos edit. The resulting file’s size depends on its dimensions, format, image detail, and sharing method, so there is no universal reduction percentage.

How do I crop a photo for Instagram on iPhone?

To crop an iPhone photo for Instagram or another service, use Photos, choose Edit and Crop, then select the aspect ratio required by the destination if one is specified. If the service requires exact dimensions as well as a shape, crop first and then use Preview’s Adjust Size command.
