The best free drawing apps for Mac depend on the kind of artwork: choose Krita for free, open-source digital painting; Inkscape for vector graphics; MediBang Paint for manga and comics; FireAlpaca for lightweight painting; and Sketchbook for clean sketching, with a major caveat that Autodesk ended its former free distribution after June 30, 2021.
The title refers to a historical February 2021 roundup, so the original ranking and the current software status need to be separated. The five applications remain useful reference points, but “free” is no longer an accurate unqualified description of every app.
Key takeaways: What are the best free drawing apps for Mac?
- Krita is the strongest current free and open-source choice for raster painting, digital art, comics, and concept work.
- Inkscape is the best fit for free vector illustration, SVG artwork, logos, typography, diagrams, and scalable graphics.
- MediBang Paint is especially suited to manga and comics, while FireAlpaca is a simpler lightweight option for painting and sketching.
- Sketchbook was the historical winner of the February 2021 roundup, but Autodesk discontinued its own distribution after June 30, 2021, so its current store-based availability is not the same as the old free-download model.
- A Mac-compatible drawing tablet is optional but can make pressure-sensitive drawing substantially more natural than using a mouse or trackpad.
Which five apps were in the February 2021 roundup?
The original February 2021 list covered Autodesk Sketchbook, Krita, MediBang Paint, Inkscape, and FireAlpaca. The original ranking named Sketchbook “Our Recommendation,” Krita “Runner Up,” and placed MediBang Paint, Inkscape, and FireAlpaca in an “Everyone Else” group. That ranking was appropriate to the software and distribution situation in February 2021, but Sketchbook’s status changed after the roundup was published.
| App | Best for | Format and workflow | Current status or caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sketchbook | Clean general sketching and digital drawing | Raster painting with brushes, layers, guides, rulers, and blend modes | Current macOS product exists, but Autodesk discontinued its former distribution after June 30, 2021; current distribution is handled by the independent Sketchbook product through stores. |
| Krita | Free digital painting, comics, and concept art | Raster painting with customizable brushes, stabilizers, layers, and artist-focused tools | Free website version and open-source GNU GPL v3 project; store editions may cost money while remaining functionally equivalent. |
| MediBang Paint | Manga, comics, tones, fonts, and cloud workflows | Raster illustration with comic-oriented materials and cross-platform features | Current Mac desktop version lists macOS 11 and above; some cloud features depend on account status or Premium access. |
| Inkscape | Vector illustration and a free Illustrator alternative | SVG-based paths, shapes, text, logos, diagrams, and scalable artwork | Free and open source under the GPL; not primarily a painterly raster application. |
| FireAlpaca | Lightweight free painting and sketching | Simple raster painting with brushes, layers, and perspective tools | Free Mac and Windows download remains available; FireAlpaca SE is a separate paid edition. |
The table is more useful than a single universal ranking because “drawing” can mean pixel-based painting, manga production, logo design, or casual sketching. No controlled comparative benchmark in the available research establishes one application as objectively fastest or best on every Mac.

Is Krita the best free drawing app for a Mac?
Krita is the best overall recommendation for readers who want a genuinely free, open-source raster painting application for Mac. The Krita project describes Krita as “a professional FREE and open source painting program”, and its official download materials list a macOS build under the GNU GPL v3.
Krita is particularly strong for digital painting, concept art, comics, and detailed brush-based work. The original roundup highlighted its customizable interface, brush engines, stabilizers, pop-up color palette, and resource management. Those tools give experienced artists room to build a personal workflow, although the interface can feel more complex to a beginner than a minimalist sketching app.
Krita’s website version is free. Krita’s installation documentation explains that store versions, including versions sold through the Mac App Store or Steam, cost money but are functionally identical to the free website version. The same documentation identifies macOS 10.12 and newer for the documented binaries, but operating-system requirements can change, so check the current installer documentation before installing.

Is Sketchbook still free on Mac?
Sketchbook is still available as a Mac product, but readers should not describe it as the same free Autodesk download featured in the February 2021 article. Autodesk’s official status page says that Autodesk discontinued its own SketchBook distribution on June 30, 2021, including new versions, upgrades, updates, and new downloads, and directed users to the independent Sketchbook company.
The current Sketchbook product site says, “Sketchbook has all the features you expect from a professional-grade app.” The current product description includes customizable brushes, guides, rulers, stroke tools, layers, and blend modes, which explains why Sketchbook remains appealing for clean, distraction-minimizing sketching.

The important distinction is distribution and pricing. The February 2021 roundup evaluated Autodesk Sketchbook in its historical free-download context; current downloads and purchases are handled through app stores, including the Mac App Store. Check the current store listing and licensing terms before treating Sketchbook as a free Mac app.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose Sketchbook if: you value a polished, uncluttered sketching experience and have confirmed the current Mac version’s price and availability. Treat its February 2021 “Our Recommendation” label as historical rather than as a current claim that Sketchbook is free.
What is the best free Mac app for digital painting?
Krita is the clearest choice for free digital painting on Mac because its focus is raster painting rather than vector layout or basic markup. Krita supports customizable brush workflows, stabilizers, layers, and artist-oriented resource management, making it better suited to finished digital paintings than a simple sketchpad.
Sketchbook is a strong alternative when interface simplicity matters more than open-source licensing or a deep painting toolkit. FireAlpaca is another reasonable alternative when a reader wants a lightweight application with a simpler feature set. MediBang Paint becomes more attractive when the painting project is specifically a comic or manga page rather than a general canvas.
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced free raster painting | Krita | Open-source painting program with customizable brushes, stabilizers, layers, and concept-art/comics support. |
| Minimal, clean sketching interface | Sketchbook | Brushes, guides, rulers, layers, blend modes, and a distraction-minimizing design; current pricing must be checked. |
| Simple lightweight painting | FireAlpaca | Free Mac and Windows painting software with a less demanding, less complex workflow. |
| Manga and comic production | MediBang Paint | Comic-oriented tones, backgrounds, fonts, and cloud features, subject to current account limits. |
What is the best free Mac app for manga or comics?
MediBang Paint is the best match for readers specifically seeking manga and comic tools, especially when tones, backgrounds, fonts, and cross-device cloud workflows matter. The official MediBang desktop page provides Mac and Windows downloads and links to tutorials and cloud features.

The February 2021 article described MediBang Paint as offering more than 50 brushes, more than 800 backgrounds and tones, and 20 fonts. According to the historical TechJunkie roundup (2021), those figures described the version reviewed at the time; they should not be presented as current specifications without rechecking them.

MediBang’s current FAQ lists macOS 11 and above for the PC version and identifies Wacom pen tablets as confirmed supported external devices. MediBang’s cloud model also needs attention: the FAQ says some cloud functions depend on account status, while non-Premium users have limited cloud storage and version-management features.
Krita is the stronger alternative for artists who want a free and open-source comics application with deeper painting flexibility. MediBang Paint is the more immediately relevant starting point when comic materials and cloud-oriented collaboration are the deciding factors.
What is the best free alternative to Illustrator on Mac?
Inkscape is the best free Illustrator alternative on Mac when the work is vector-based. The Inkscape project describes Inkscape as “a Free and open source vector graphics editor for GNU/Linux, Windows and macOS.” Inkscape uses SVG as its main format and is designed for logos, typography, cartoons, diagrams, flowcharts, and illustrations that need to remain sharp at different sizes.
Inkscape supports object manipulation, node editing, path conversion, multiline text, and a broad range of import and export formats. The official overview lists SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG among supported formats, although file exchange with proprietary applications can still require checking how individual features translate.
Inkscape is not the right default for painterly brushwork on a fixed pixel canvas. Choose Krita, Sketchbook, MediBang Paint, or FireAlpaca for raster painting; choose Inkscape when paths, shapes, text, SVG, and scalable output are central. Inkscape’s licensing page confirms its free and open-source GPL licensing.
Is FireAlpaca a good free drawing app for Mac?
FireAlpaca is a good free Mac drawing app for readers who prefer a lightweight, straightforward painting program over a large professional suite. The official FireAlpaca download page identifies the software as free digital painting software for Mac and Windows and records version 2.16.0 on June 12, 2026.

The original roundup emphasized FireAlpaca’s lightweight design, brushes, color and layer controls, and 3D perspective tool. The historical article also mentioned macOS X 10.7 and later, but that requirement is not current evidence and should not be reused as the present installation requirement.

FireAlpaca and FireAlpaca SE are different products. FireAlpaca SE is described by its official product page as a separate one-time-purchase edition with no subscription, a different brush engine, 16-bit channels, filters, and other SE-only features. The free FireAlpaca download should not be described as including every FireAlpaca SE feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use a drawing tablet with a Mac drawing app?
Yes. The five apps can be used with a mouse or trackpad, but a pressure-sensitive pen tablet can provide more natural strokes and pressure control. A tablet is optional rather than a requirement, and the best choice depends on whether you want a screenless tablet or a pen display.
A Mac-compatible drawing tablet such as a Wacom Intuos-style pen tablet is the most relevant companion purchase for this list. Wacom documents connecting Intuos to a Mac by USB, installing the driver, and using the tablet with creative software. Confirm the tablet’s current macOS support and driver requirements before buying.
Wacom also documents Mac compatibility for Wacom One, with a driver required on macOS. A pen display can feel more direct because the pen works on the screen, while a screenless tablet is usually the simpler entry point. Neither type is necessary for casual drawing.
Can an iPad or iPhone work as a Mac drawing companion?
Apple’s Continuity Markup workflow can let a nearby iPhone or iPad sketch or mark up a Mac document, including drawing with Apple Pencil on iPad. Apple documents the workflow in its guide to sketching in or marking up Mac documents with an iPad or iPhone.

This ensures easy connection to various devices, allowing beginner artists to set up quickly and focus on their creativity without compatibility concerns. Whether using a laptop, tablet, or desktop, the Deco 01 V3 provides a seamless experience, making it an ideal choice for those just starting their digital art journey
Continuity Markup is a useful secondary workflow, not a sixth Mac drawing application and not a replacement for choosing Krita, Inkscape, MediBang Paint, FireAlpaca, or Sketchbook. The workflow depends on compatible Apple devices and the specific Mac document or app being marked up.
Which free drawing app should you choose?
Choose Krita for the best current free/open-source raster painting environment. Choose Inkscape for vector illustration, SVG, logos, typography, and diagrams. Choose MediBang Paint for manga and comics, especially when comic materials and cloud features matter. Choose FireAlpaca for a lightweight free painting app. Choose Sketchbook for its historically clean sketching experience, but verify current store distribution and pricing because Autodesk’s former free-download arrangement ended after June 30, 2021.
For the most natural input, add a Mac-compatible pressure-sensitive pen tablet after selecting the software. For casual sketches, a mouse, trackpad, or existing iPad workflow may be sufficient; for sustained digital-art work, a tablet is the more relevant hardware upgrade.
