Photopea is the free Photoshop alternative I keep coming back to because it opens in a browser, processes files locally, uses PSD as its main editable format, and includes serious tools such as Smart Objects, Smart Filters, scripts, and Variables. It is not Photoshop-equivalent, but it covers many everyday and production workflows with unusually little setup.
The title’s first-person framing should not be read as a claim that every alternative was personally tested here. The defensible conclusion is about Photopea’s documented strengths: convenience, breadth, PSD relevance, and advanced workflows without requiring a conventional desktop installation.

Photopea keeps winning as a free Photoshop alternative because it combines browser access, local file processing, PSD-centered editing, and surprisingly advanced layer and automation tools. Photopea is not identical to Photoshop and does not guarantee feature-for-feature compatibility, but it is unusually convenient for everyday edits, reusable templates, composites, and many production tasks.
The convenience is practical rather than theoretical. Photopea does not require a conventional desktop installation, works on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone, and is designed for tasks ranging from resizing photographs to building illustrations and webpage graphics. Photopea’s official introduction recommends a large screen, a precise pointing device or stylus, and a keyboard for the most comfortable experience.

That makes Photopea particularly useful when the job is waiting on another computer, when a colleague sends a PSD, or when installing a full creative suite is more trouble than the edit deserves. The browser is the main reason to return to Photopea; the PSD workflow and advanced tools are why the editor remains useful after the novelty wears off.
Does Photopea upload your files?
Photopea says files opened in the editor are processed on the user’s device and do not leave that device. Photopea’s privacy policy states, “Files, which you open in Photopea, are never sent anywhere, they never leave your device.”

Photopea’s introduction similarly says, “It does not upload any of your files to the internet,” and says the editor can continue working after the user disconnects from the internet. Those are statements from Photopea’s own documentation, not the result of an independent security audit; readers handling highly sensitive material should still apply their organization’s security rules.
Local processing is also not the same as automatic backup. Photopea warns that work can be lost if the editor is closed before the document is saved. Save deliberately during a session, and export or save the working file before closing the browser tab or disconnecting.
Can you edit PSD files without Photoshop?
Yes. Photopea can open and save layered PSD files, so users can edit many Photoshop documents without having Photoshop installed. PSD is Photopea’s main editable format, while PNG, JPG, and other supported files are converted into the editor’s document model when opened.
Photopea can preserve layered work as PSD and export finished images to formats including JPG, PNG, SVG, and PDF, as documented in Photopea’s open-and-save documentation. The workflow is therefore more useful than a basic online converter: a user can open a PSD, adjust layers and masks, save an editable PSD, and export a delivery format.

PSD support should not be described as perfect Photoshop compatibility. Photoshop documents may rely on effects, fonts, color profiles, plugins, or application-specific behavior that does not reproduce identically in another editor. Before committing to a client-facing or archival workflow, open a representative file, inspect text and effects, and confirm that the exported result matches the requirement.

What advanced features make Photopea more than a basic online editor?
Photopea supports nondestructive and repeatable workflows that are normally associated with more substantial image editors. The most important features are Smart Objects, Smart Filters, scripting, and Variables.
Smart Objects and Smart Filters
Photopea Smart Objects can act as source-backed layers. Multiple copies can refer to one source, and changing the source can update those copies. That is useful for mockups, reusable templates, and composites where the same artwork appears in several places.
Smart Objects also support a less destructive transformation workflow: edits can be recalculated from the original source rather than permanently degrading the transformed pixels. Photopea’s Smart Objects documentation explains the source relationship and nondestructive behavior.

Photopea documents these controls in its adjustments and filters guide. The result is a better fit for iterative design than an editor where every filter permanently changes the image.
Can Photopea automate repetitive image work?
Yes. Photopea supports JavaScript through a Script window and API. The scripting interface is similar to Adobe Photoshop’s and can work with documents, layers, transformations, exports, and other operations. The official Photopea scripting documentation defines the supported approach.

Photopea Variables extend that automation to data-driven graphics. Variables can control a layer’s visibility, text content, or pixel content, and a CSV data set can drive multiple variations that Photopea exports as images in a ZIP archive. That can suit localized social graphics, product cards, certificates, name badges, or other templated images. What is the best Photoshop alternative for different users?
The best Photoshop alternative depends on whether the priority is browser convenience, open-source desktop editing, digital painting, or an integrated design suite. Photopea is the broadest convenience recommendation in this group, but GIMP, Krita, and Affinity solve different problems.

Is GIMP better than Photopea?
GIMP is better than Photopea for readers who specifically want a mature, installable, free and open-source image editor with extensive customization and third-party plugin support. GIMP’s official site describes it as “The Free & Open Source Image Editor” and lists photo retouching, image composition, original artwork, graphic-design elements, color-managed workflows, scripting, and plugins among its uses.
Photopea is better than GIMP when the immediate priority is opening an editor in a browser, working with PSD files, or avoiding a desktop installation. GIMP is not simply the desktop version of Photopea: the programs have different interfaces, plugin ecosystems, file-handling behavior, and workflow conventions. Is Krita better than Photopea for drawing?
Krita is generally the more suitable choice for serious digital painting and illustration because its feature set is centered on brushes, brush stabilizers, artwork, comics, and animation. Krita describes itself as a professional free and open-source painting program, and its feature documentation lists brushes, stabilizers, vector and text tools, animation, layers, color management, scripting, and PSD support.
Photopea remains useful for painting-related edits, compositing, PSD handoffs, and graphics that combine raster and vector elements. Krita is the stronger starting point for a painter who needs a dedicated brush-oriented workspace rather than a general-purpose browser editor.

Krita’s license documentation says the application can be used for commercial work. The documentation also says Krita can function without internet access when optional online features are not used, which makes Krita a credible offline desktop choice; consult the Krita licensing and usage page for the applicable terms.

Canva announced on October 29, 2025, “Affinity is now free for everyone,” describing the all-new Affinity as a professional application combining photo editing, vector design, and page layout. Canva’s Affinity announcement is the primary source for that launch statement.
Affinity is therefore the most relevant comparison for someone who wants an integrated desktop-style design suite instead of a browser utility. Canva later reported that more than one million people had signed up for Affinity in four days; that is a Canva-reported launch figure, not an independently audited market statistic. The report appears in Canva’s explanation of why it made Affinity free.
Check Affinity’s current access policy, supported platforms, and feature details immediately before publishing or choosing it. Free software policies and product features are volatile, and a launch announcement does not by itself establish permanent terms for every future release.
What hardware helps with Photopea?
A large screen, keyboard, and precise pointing device make Photopea more comfortable, according to Photopea’s own introduction. A USB drawing tablet is the one accessory that naturally fits this workflow because pen control can help with selections, masking, retouching, painting, and detailed layer work. Choose based on operating-system compatibility, active-area size, pen feel, and whether the tablet works without a special driver on the intended computer.
A drawing tablet is optional, not a requirement. A mouse is sufficient for many crops, exports, typography changes, and simple compositing tasks. The accessory becomes more defensible when the work involves repeated brush strokes or precise hand-controlled selections.

What are Photopea’s real limitations?
- It is not Photoshop. Photopea’s PSD support enables many compatible workflows but does not prove identical behavior for every Photoshop effect, plugin, font, profile, or advanced feature.
- Browser convenience has performance limits. Speed depends on the device, browser, document size, and complexity. The research reviewed here did not establish an independent benchmark.
- Local processing is not backup. Files may stay on the device according to Photopea’s documentation, but unsaved work can still disappear when the editor closes.
- Offline use requires preparation. Photopea says the editor can continue after disconnection, but users should load the editor and save their work deliberately rather than assume every browser or network failure is recoverable.

Photopea is not the most specialized choice in every category. Photopea is the choice that is easiest to keep available: open the browser, work on a PSD or another supported file, use advanced layers when needed, and save the result deliberately.
