You can create a personal AI caricature by describing the image you want in ChatGPT, with or without uploading a reference photo. Name the style, mood, composition, and personal details to include; then review the result and request edits before saving or sharing it.
A February 2026 report described this prompt-based format as prominent in social feeds, but that dated report does not establish that it is equally popular everywhere today. The basic idea is simple: turn a person into a playful, exaggerated portrait, sometimes incorporating their job or interests.

How to make an AI caricature in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT Images in the web or mobile app, or ask ChatGPT to create an image in a conversation.
- Describe the caricature. Specify the subject, style, mood, composition, and details you want emphasized. Include job or hobby details explicitly if you want them represented.
- Optionally add a reference photo. Upload an image you have the right to use, then describe how you want it transformed.
- Review the result. Check whether the likeness and requested details are right. Ask for a targeted revision or use the selection tool to change an area.
- Save or share the image using the available controls. Review it before posting and make AI-generation disclosure clear to viewers.
Write a more specific prompt
A prompt can ask for a caricature of you and your job, but you do not need to rely on the model to infer personal details from chat history. State what work, hobbies, visual features, or setting you want represented, and say what you want left out.
For example: “Create a friendly editorial-style caricature of me as a painter in a small studio. Keep my glasses and hairstyle recognizable, exaggerate my smile slightly, and include a palette and easel. Use warm colors and a simple composition. Do not add text or other people.”

This is a starting point, not a guarantee of likeness or accuracy. If the image misses an important detail, request a specific change rather than assuming the model knows what you intended.
Use photos and likenesses responsibly
Use your own photo or an image you have permission to use. OpenAI’s service terms say visual capabilities may not be used to identify a person, solicit or infer private or sensitive information about a person, or reproduce a person’s likeness without express consent and necessary rights. OpenAI’s usage policies also address privacy and non-consensual likeness uses. These are OpenAI’s terms and policies, not a complete statement of applicable law.

Before uploading, consider whether the photo includes private details you do not want to share. When making a caricature of another identifiable person, get their permission and follow the service’s current terms and policies.
Review and disclose before sharing
Check the generated image before posting. OpenAI’s sharing policy says that posting your own prompts or completions on social media is generally permissible; it also calls for manual review and clear disclosure when content is AI-generated. Make the disclosure visible enough that viewers are unlikely to miss or misunderstand it.

OpenAI says supported images generated with ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API include C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks. Platforms, editors, and conversions may remove metadata, while compression, cropping, or edits can weaken watermarks. These provenance signals can help indicate origin, but their presence does not prove accuracy, legal ownership, or context; their absence does not prove an image was not AI-generated.

Can I make an AI caricature without uploading a photo?
Yes. You can describe the person and the image you want in a prompt. Include the job, hobbies, and visual details you want represented; without a reference photo, the result may not resemble a particular person.

Should I include my job or hobbies in the prompt?
If you want them shown, describe them directly. Naming the relevant work, interests, props, or setting gives the image model explicit material rather than asking it to infer those details.
Can I edit a caricature after it is generated?
Yes. ChatGPT Images supports further edits through instructions in the conversation or a selection tool. Review the whole image after each edit.
Should I disclose that my caricature was made with AI?
When sharing, make AI-generation disclosure clear enough that viewers will not miss or misunderstand it, consistent with OpenAI’s sharing policy. Provenance signals may help, but they do not replace a clear disclosure.
Do provenance signals prove that an image is accurate or legally cleared?
No. C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks can provide information about provenance, but they do not establish that an image is accurate, legally owned, or shown in the right context. They may also be removed or weakened during editing or sharing.
