For a retrospective on 2024, Adobe’s creative-trend report named four visual directions: Calming Rhythms, Wonder and Joy, Dynamic Dimensions, and The New Nostalgia. These are creative-industry forecasts and observations, not proof that every website adopted them or that they improved user outcomes. The practical test is whether an expressive treatment strengthens identity while keeping content legible, navigation clear, and visitors in control.

Use the trends as options, not a checklist. Compare visual treatments against the purpose of the page, accessibility needs, and implementation constraints; the sources reviewed do not establish one universally best style.

2024 web design trends at a glance

Direction What it describes Responsible UX check
Calming Rhythms Soothing, rhythmic visuals, such as simple abstract patterns and slowly shifting forms Keep motion restrained and reducible; preserve readability.
Wonder and Joy Playful or enchanting expression intended to inspire awe, joy, or imagination Let illustration and spectacle support rather than obscure navigation and essential content.
Dynamic Dimensions Converging 2D and 3D elements and experiences in motion Consider loading and rendering costs, and provide a less-motion experience where appropriate.
The New Nostalgia Contemporary interpretations of vintage styles, including 1990s and early-2000s references Make the reference work on modern screens without compromising legibility or usability.

Adobe developed this taxonomy from internal and external data, Creative Cloud community expertise, and interviews across sectors. It is a creative-industry view, not a universal study of website behavior. [Adobe Creative Trends 2024] [Adobe Newsroom]

Four expressive directions—and how to use them

Calming Rhythms

Adobe describes soothing, rhythmic visuals, including simple abstract patterns and slowly shifting forms. On a website, that might mean repeated shapes, a measured visual rhythm, or restrained animation. Treat those choices as ways to set a tone, not as evidence that motion itself improves an experience. Check that the content remains easy to read and that visitors can limit disruptive movement.

Wonder and Joy

This direction uses playful, imaginative, or surprising visuals to evoke awe and joy. Custom illustration or an unexpected detail can give a brand personality, provided it supports the page’s purpose. Keep navigation and the main message easy to find, especially when a page uses decorative effects.

Dynamic Dimensions

Adobe identifies combinations of 2D and 3D and experiences in motion as a visual direction for 2024. Layered imagery, dimensional artwork, and animation can help express a brand or subject. The reviewed sources do not provide a comparative performance benchmark for these techniques, so check the actual page’s loading and rendering behavior rather than assuming a dimensional effect is worth its cost.

The New Nostalgia

Adobe describes contemporary interpretations of vintage eras, including 1990s and early-2000s references, combined with current creative techniques. The aim is reinterpretation, not simply copying an older style. Preserve modern readability, clear controls, and navigation even when the visual treatment recalls an earlier period.

How to evaluate an expressive design choice

No single visual treatment is best for every site. Compare alternatives—such as subtle versus prominent motion, flat illustration versus dimensional assets, or human-authored versus AI-assisted content—against the task visitors came to complete.

  1. Purpose: Ask whether the treatment reinforces the content, brand, or task.
  2. Hierarchy and legibility: Check whether visitors can find the main message, controls, and next step.
  3. Access and control: Test whether people can perceive and operate the experience across relevant input and display contexts, and limit disruptive motion.
  4. Performance: Check whether the treatment’s loading or rendering cost harms the experience.
  5. AI behavior, if used: Make it possible for people to understand, inspect, revise, or reject generated output.

These are practical evaluation questions, not a measured ranking of the four trends. The reviewed sources do not establish universal performance or UX outcomes for them.

AI in design: adoption is not proof of results

AI was already part of some design workflows in 2024, but reported use and expectations do not show that AI tools improved products or user outcomes. Figma reported that 59% of surveyed designers and developers were using AI in their work, while fewer than half of AI users had launched anything. Figma’s separate survey of more than 1,800 Figma users across seven countries found 89% expected at least some impact on company products and services in the following 12 months, and 37% expected significant or transformative impact. These are survey responses, not evidence that the predicted impact occurred. [Figma, “Anticipation, experimentation and AI”] [Figma, “AI + design”]

Other 2024 research urged caution about AI design tools. Nielsen Norman Group reported that few tools meaningfully enhanced UX workflows in its evaluation and interviews. Its sample of practitioners was early adopters, not a representative industry poll, and its findings describe the tools at that time—not every AI tool or later development. The article also notes that nondeterministic outputs can make repeatable design solutions difficult. [Nielsen Norman Group]

A 2024 paper on generative AI applications offers principles that can guide product decisions: design responsibly, align with users’ mental models, calibrate trust and reliance, account for variability, support co-creation, and design for imperfection. These principles concern generative AI applications; the paper is not a test of general-purpose websites. [“Design Principles for Generative AI Applications”]

A practical checklist before launch

  1. Keep the purpose clear. Make the page’s main message, navigation, and next step easy to locate.
  2. Check legibility. Review text and controls over patterns, images, color, and animated backgrounds.
  3. Test motion and control. Verify that movement does not obstruct reading or interaction, and offer a less-motion experience where appropriate.
  4. Test the real experience. Review the published page with its actual content and interactions, not only a design mockup.
  5. Review AI output, if applicable. Check it for accuracy and fit, and give users ways to inspect, correct, or reject generated results.
  6. Measure before making claims. Compare alternatives in the context of the site and its visitors; do not assume a trend improves performance or outcomes.

FAQ

What are the web design trends in 2024?

Adobe’s 2024 creative report named Calming Rhythms, Wonder and Joy, Dynamic Dimensions, and The New Nostalgia. These are creative-industry directions, not a measured list of what all websites used.

How can I make an expressive website accessible and easy to use?

Keep content and controls legible, preserve a clear hierarchy, and ensure visitors can navigate and operate the experience. Test motion and offer ways to limit disruptive movement where appropriate.

Did AI replace designers in 2024?

The research does not show that. Figma reported AI use and high expectations among surveyed users, while Nielsen Norman Group found that few tools meaningfully enhanced UX workflows in its 2024 evaluation. Neither finding demonstrates that AI replaced designers.

Does 3D or animation always make a website better?

No. These effects may suit a site’s subject or identity, but the reviewed sources do not establish that they improve outcomes. Evaluate their purpose, legibility, user control, and performance in the actual experience.

Is retro web design only about copying old websites?

No. Adobe’s New Nostalgia direction describes contemporary interpretations of vintage styles. A callback can feel historical while the page still uses clear modern navigation and readable content.

The Bottom Line

The 2024 trends discussed here offer ways to make a site feel rhythmic, playful, dimensional, or nostalgic. Adobe’s taxonomy is a creative forecast, not a universal adoption or outcome study. Choose a direction that serves the site’s purpose, then check that the result remains legible, accessible, and under the visitor’s control.
