The simplest wearable plumbob is made from two matching cardstock pyramid halves joined at their wide bases. Mount the finished diamond above a headband with a lightweight straw, dowel, skewer, or wire support. Green glitter cardstock gives the familiar Sims-inspired appearance while keeping the project inexpensive and beginner-friendly.

The easiest way to make a wearable plumbob is to build two matching paper or cardstock pyramid halves, join them at their wide bases, and mount the finished diamond above a headband with a lightweight support. Green glitter cardstock gives the recognizable Sims-inspired look without resin, electronics, or heavy structural work. The complete beginner version can be made with scissors, tape, a headband, and a short straw, dowel, skewer, or piece of wire.

This guide covers the lightweight paper version first, then explains how to make a sturdier EVA-foam prop and why resin or illuminated builds are better treated as advanced projects.

Choose the right plumbob build

Build Best for Advantages Trade-offs
Cardstock or glitter paper Beginners, costumes, parties, photography Cheap, light, fast, and requires ordinary craft tools Can crease, tear, or droop if oversized or poorly supported
EVA foam Cosplayers who want a more durable prop More rigid and easier to reinforce Requires more shaping, finishing, and structural work
Resin and lighting Experienced prop makers Can produce a rigid or illuminated display piece Involves molds, heat, electronics, curing problems, and substantially more risk

For most wearable costumes, start with cardstock. A plumbob only needs to look like a floating diamond; it does not need the weight or complexity of a cast resin object.

Materials for a beginner paper plumbob

  • Green glitter cardstock paper or another heavy green cardstock. Ordinary printer paper works for a quick test, but cardstock holds folds better and resists tearing during wear.
  • A plain or black headband. A wider band gives the support more surface area.
  • A short plastic straw, wooden skewer, dowel, stiff craft support, or strong floral wire.
  • Scissors.
  • Double-sided tape, transparent tape, or a suitable craft adhesive.
  • A printer and a printable plumbob half-template, if you are using one.

Optional tools include a ruler, pencil, craft knife, cutting mat, and a bone folder. A blunt household utensil can substitute for a bone folder when scoring the fold lines. If you use a craft knife, cut on a stable surface and keep the blade pointed away from your hands.

The most useful shopping term for the shell is green glitter cardstock paper. Glitter cardstock is not mandatory, but it combines the green color and reflective finish in one material. Heavy green cardstock is a better choice if you want a cleaner painted or decorated surface.

How the paper plumbob is constructed

A paper plumbob is not made from one complicated three-dimensional template. It is assembled from two identical polygonal pyramid halves. Each flat piece is folded into a six-sided pyramid. When the two wide bases are placed together, they form the familiar symmetrical diamond.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That construction makes symmetry especially important: both printed pieces must be the same size, and their fold lines must be aligned before you join them.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Select a practical size

Use a small or medium size for a wearable headband. A large plumbob puts more leverage on the headband and is more likely to droop, tear, or become uncomfortable. One cosplay pattern demonstrates approximate versions around 6 and 8 inches, so the design can be scaled, but the larger size needs better reinforcement and a lighter construction.

If you are printing a template, print a test page first. Confirm that the entire outline fits on the paper and that your printer has not changed the scale. Do not print one half at “fit to page” and the other at a different setting.

2. Print two matching half-templates

Print the same plumbob half-template twice at the intended scale. Each template should include the pyramid faces, fold lines, and adhesive tabs. Keep the tabs: they are the surfaces that close the pyramid.

Neenah Index Cardstock, 8.5" x 11", 90 lb./163 gsm, White, 300 Sheets, Lightweight, 94 Brightness - EXTRA SHEETS, MORE VALUE! (91437)
  • NEENAH INDEX WHITE CARDSTOCK: The smooth texture and crisp white color of our 90 lb cardstock produces high resolution images and prints for attention-getting and professional documents
  • LIGHTWEIGHT CARDSTOCK: This is 90 lb. INDEX cardstock, which is measured differently than COVER cardstock. For a weight comparison, it’s heavier than 67 lb. Bristol cardstock, yet lighter than 65 lb. COVER cardstock
  • LETTER SIZE CARDSTOCK: This 8.5" x 11" white cardstock comes in a pack of 300, so you always have enough on hand
  • IDEAL FOR EVERYDAY PROJECTS This smooth cardstock is ideal for documents, flyers, brochures, calligraphy hand lettering, and crafting!
  • PRINTER COMPATIBLE: Works well with printers including inkjet and laser for jam-free every day printing Plus, it's crafted to be lignin and acid-free for long-lasting results

If you do not have a template, you can draft the faces manually, but a printable pattern is the easier route for a first attempt because it reduces measuring and symmetry errors. Before cutting your good cardstock, make a trial half from ordinary paper.

3. Cut the outlines and tabs

Cut around the outside edge of both pieces, including the tabs. Scissors are sufficient for a simple pattern. A ruler and precision craft knife can produce straighter edges, particularly where the template has tight interior cuts.

Do not cut away the tabs or mistake fold lines for cut lines. If the printed pattern uses different line styles, mark the fold lines lightly on the reverse side before assembling.

4. Score and fold the faces

Score the solid fold lines with a ruler and a blunt tool, then fold inward along each line. Scoring compresses the paper fibers and helps the faces meet cleanly instead of buckling. Fold the adhesive tabs inward as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the folds before applying adhesive. This dry fit lets you identify a misplaced fold or uneven edge while the piece is still easy to correct.

5. Close the first pyramid half

Apply small pieces of tape or adhesive to the tabs and bring the adjoining faces together. Work around the pyramid gradually rather than trying to close every seam at once. Check that the outer edges meet and that the wide base remains as flat as possible.

Complete the first half, then build the second half in the same orientation. Place them side by side before joining them and compare their outlines. If one half is visibly larger or twisted, correct it now.

6. Join the two pyramid halves

Place the wide bases together to create the diamond. Join the perimeter with several small pieces of double-sided tape or suitable adhesive. Multiple short pieces are easier to position around the perimeter than one long strip and allow you to keep the seam aligned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Press the seam from the inside where possible. Leave the adhesive undisturbed until it has bonded. If the seam will be visible, position the cleanest edge toward the front of the costume.

7. Attach the floating support

Secure one end of a short straw, dowel, skewer, or piece of stiff wire to the top of the headband. The other end should reach the lower portion of the plumbob, leaving enough distance for the diamond to sit above the wearer’s head.

For a wire design, wrap the wire firmly around the headband and insert or attach the other end through the lower portion of the plumbob. A straw or narrow dowel can be attached to the band and hidden behind the center seam. Use a narrow, color-matched support if you want it to draw less attention.

Reinforce the headband connection with tape or adhesive, then gently shake the band before wearing it. Trim, bend, or cover any sharp wire ends. The support should not press against the wearer’s head, snag hair, or leave exposed points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Reinforce and decorate

Add reinforcement around the center seam and the point where the support meets the paper if the prop will be worn for several hours. You can add a contrasting border, translucent paper, painted details, or a different color for a mood-themed variation.

The classic plumbob is commonly represented in green, but a fan-made costume prop can use another color for creative effect. Describe an independently made item as “The Sims-inspired” or a “DIY plumbob costume prop.” Do not present it as official merchandise or imply permission to reproduce or sell branded goods.

Make the support less visible

  • Use the narrowest support that can carry the prop without bending.
  • Match the support to the headband or plumbob color.
  • Position it behind the center seam rather than across a front face.
  • Keep the diamond lightweight so the support does not need to be oversized.
  • Take a test photograph under the lighting where you will wear the costume. A support that blends into a room may be noticeable under a camera flash.

A transparent straw or thin wire may reduce visual distraction, but no support is guaranteed to disappear in every light or photograph.

Sturdier alternative: an EVA-foam plumbob

Choose EVA foam if the prop must survive repeated costume use or transport. The construction still follows the same basic idea—two matching pyramid halves joined at their wide bases—but the material requires more preparation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sturdier cosplay version can use:

  • EVA foam for the two halves.
  • A 1-inch headband.
  • A wooden dowel for the central support.
  • Heavy wire, stronger than 9-gauge, for reinforcement.
  • Plasti Dip or another suitable coating.
  • Spray paint and a compatible sealant.

Foam is not necessarily easier than cardstock. You must cut thicker material accurately, shape or join the edges, reinforce the support, prepare the surface, and apply finishing products safely. It is a better durability option, not the best beginner shortcut.

Why resin and illuminated versions are advanced

Resin builds can use clear casting resin, catalyst, mold release, sheet metal, steel tubing, magnets, and bicycle safety lights. They can produce an impressive display or illuminated prop, but thick resin castings generate heat while curing and may crack if the process is not controlled. Large castings often require test pieces and careful process development.

For that reason, do not treat a resin or light-up plumbob as a simple extension of the paper project. It introduces chemical handling, mold design, curing, structural weight, batteries, wiring, and attachment problems. If you add lighting to a paper version, use only a small non-heating light source, secure the battery safely, and keep wiring away from the wearer’s face and hair. The unlit cardstock version remains the simplest and most forgiving build.

Troubleshooting

The diamond looks lopsided

Check that both templates were printed at exactly the same scale. Then inspect the fold lines, tabs, and wide bases. Uneven folds, a twisted pyramid half, or mismatched bases are the usual construction causes. Before adding adhesive, place both halves together and rotate one until the faces align.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The center seam opens

Use several smaller pieces of double-sided tape around the entire perimeter instead of relying on one piece. Reinforce the inside of the seam if you can reach it. Allow the adhesive to set before attaching the support, since the support adds leverage to the join.

The plumbob droops

Reduce the size or weight of the diamond, shorten the unsupported distance, and strengthen the connection between the support and headband. A cardstock shell with a straw or wire support is intended for a lightweight version; a large glitter-covered shell may need a dowel or an EVA-foam structure.

The support is too obvious

Move it behind the center seam, use a narrower piece, or match its color to the headband. Test the prop from the front and side, because a support that is hidden in a straight-on view may still be visible from an angle.

The paper tears around the headband

Replace ordinary printer paper with cardstock or glitter cardstock, reinforce the attachment point with an extra paper patch or tape, and avoid over-bending the tabs. The attachment area receives the most stress, so it should not rely on a single thin paper layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DIY or buy an official alternative?

Making the prop is worthwhile when you want a particular size, color, finish, or handmade costume detail. It also lets you keep the object very light. If you want a ready-made option, the official Shop The Sims store has listed an LED Plumbob Headband in black, blonde, and brunette variants. The listing showed a price of $38 when it was crawled, but retail price and availability can change; check the current store listing before relying on it.

The official headband is an alternative or visual reference, not a required component of this project. A homemade version should still be described as Sims-inspired rather than official merchandise.

Final pre-wear checklist

  • Both pyramid halves are the same size and fully closed.
  • The center seam is taped or bonded around its full perimeter.
  • The support is firmly attached to both the headband and plumbob.
  • No wire, skewer, craft-knife edge, or adhesive point can contact the wearer.
  • The prop does not pull the headband forward or become uncomfortable during movement.
  • The diamond clears the wearer’s head and does not obstruct vision.
  • You have tested the support by walking and gently turning before wearing it in public.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a template to make a plumbob?

A printable template is the easiest option because it keeps both pyramid halves symmetrical. If you draft one yourself, make two copies of the same design and check that their wide bases match before gluing.

What paper is best for a DIY plumbob?

Green glitter cardstock is a practical choice because it is lightweight, reflective, and holds folds better than ordinary printer paper. Use heavy plain cardstock if you want to paint or decorate the surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I make a large plumbob for cosplay?

Yes, but keep the prop small and lightweight. A large or heavy shell can make the headband droop and can tear the paper around the support. Reinforce the headband connection and test it before wearing it.

Is EVA foam or resin better than paper?

Use cardstock for the simplest build and EVA foam for a sturdier reusable version. Resin and illuminated designs require additional experience with curing heat, molds, batteries, wiring, and structural weight.

The Bottom Line

For a first attempt, print two matching half-templates on green glitter cardstock, fold each into a pyramid, join the wide bases, and mount the lightweight diamond to a headband with a protected straw, dowel, or wire support. Keep the prop small and light; move to EVA foam only when you need more durability, and reserve resin or lighting for experienced makers.
