Charm squares are coordinated precut 5-inch fabric squares that work for quilts as well as smaller projects such as table runners, pillows, toppers, totes, and purses. A straight-row patchwork quilt is a simple place to start; pieced blocks and shaped bags involve more planning and may require extra fabric or supplies. Check the chosen pattern for its square count, finished dimensions, seam allowance, and material requirements.
What are charm squares?

Coordinated prints make it easier to begin without selecting every fabric individually. You can use them as whole squares or cut them into smaller pieces when a pattern calls for it. A sewn square finishes smaller than its cut size: Missouri Star Quilt Company says a 5-inch charm square finishes at 4.5 inches after sewing. That assumes accurate piecing and the pattern’s seam allowance, so follow the pattern’s measurements.

1. Make a simple patchwork quilt
A one-patch layout is a direct way to use charm squares: arrange them, sew them into rows, and join the rows. It requires less cutting than block-based designs, but the final dimensions depend on the number of squares, layout, seam allowance, and any borders or sashing.
- Lay out the squares on a clean, flat surface and decide on the arrangement.
- Check the balance of colors and prints, then photograph the layout if you want a reference.
- Stack each row in order so the squares stay in sequence.
- Sew the squares into rows using the seam allowance specified by your pattern.
- Join the rows, then add any borders and finish the quilt as the pattern directs.
Do not assume one pack will make a quilt of a particular size. Estimate the layout using the sewn unit size and check the pattern’s materials list. A quilt also needs appropriate backing and finishing materials.

2. Try a nine-patch, half-square-triangle, or disappearing four-patch quilt
Pieced blocks create more visual variety than a plain grid, but add construction steps. Nine-patch blocks arrange smaller squares into a larger unit. Half-square triangles introduce diagonal lines, while a disappearing four-patch design uses a pieced unit that is cut and rearranged.

3. Sew a table runner or topper
Charm squares can be arranged in rows or pieced blocks for a table runner or topper. Plan the intended finished dimensions first, then use the pattern to determine the number of squares and whether you need border, backing, batting, or binding fabric.

4. Make a patchwork pillow cover
A patchwork panel can form the front of a pillow cover. The number of squares depends on the pillow size and the pattern’s layout and seam allowances. Check the finishing instructions as well as the panel dimensions before cutting or piecing.
5. Sew a tote or purse
Charm squares can be used for totes and purses, but a pattern may cut them into smaller pieces and combine them into a panel. For example, Moda’s Charm Tote project specifies 34 precut 5-inch squares, cut in half to make two 2½-by-5-inch rectangles per square. The panel can be quilted with batting or left unquilted. Those requirements apply to that project, not to every tote pattern.

- For a straightforward start: Choose a simple patchwork layout with direct row piecing.
- For more block variety: Try a pattern for nine-patch, half-square-triangle, or disappearing four-patch units.
- For a smaller home project: Consider a runner, topper, or pillow cover.
- For a bag: Choose a tote or purse pattern and check its cutting, lining, and handle requirements.
Start with the number of squares you actually have. Patterns differ in their square counts, finished sizes, and requirements for background, border, binding, backing, or other materials.

Do all charm packs contain 42 squares?
No. Forty-two is a typical pack quantity, not a rule for every product. Check the package and compare its contents with the pattern’s materials list.
