Start with one hook, smooth medium-weight yarn, and a small flat rectangle. Learn the slip knot, foundation chain, and single crochet first; then practice turning and counting rows before moving on to taller stitches, color changes, or circular projects.
What you need to start crocheting
To learn crochet, start with a small, flat rectangle—not a complex motif, fitted garment, or amigurumi. Crochet fabric is made by pulling loops of yarn through other loops with one hook. Your first useful lesson is a practice swatch or small dishcloth made with a foundation chain and repeated rows of single crochet.
Gather:
- Medium-weight or worsted-weight yarn, preferably in a light or medium color. Clear, smooth yarn makes the individual loops easier to see.
- One crochet hook that matches the yarn label and pattern. Medium-weight yarn commonly uses a hook in the approximately 5.5–6.5 mm range, but the label and pattern take priority. Millimeter sizing is more reliable than a hook letter because letter systems vary.
- Small scissors for cutting yarn.
- A large-eye yarn needle for weaving in loose ends.
- Optional: locking or split-ring stitch markers, a measuring tape, and a printed abbreviation reference.
You do not need a complete collection of hooks at first. A single hook suited to your yarn reduces confusion and is usually enough for the first practice project. How yarn weight and hook size work together
In crochet, yarn “weight” generally means thickness or category—not the physical weight of the skein. The Craft Yarn Council’s categories run from lace through jumbo, with suggested hook ranges for each category. Those ranges are starting points, not rules.
Read the yarn label first. It normally lists a recommended hook size and may provide a gauge. If you are following a pattern, the pattern’s gauge and hook instructions take precedence over a general chart. For a first practice swatch, exact gauge matters less than learning to maintain reasonably even tension. Gauge becomes important when the finished size matters, such as with a hat, garment, fitted accessory, or dimension-specific blanket.
As a practical starting point, medium or worsted-weight yarn with a 5.5–6.5 mm hook is easy for many beginners to handle. Choose a light or medium color rather than black, very dark, fuzzy, or highly textured yarn: the stitches are much easier to identify while you are learning.

1. Hold the hook and yarn comfortably
There is no single mandatory grip. Hold the hook either like a pencil, with the thumb and fingers near the handle, or like a knife, with the handle resting more in the palm. Choose the position that gives you control without making your fingers, wrist, or shoulder tense.
Hold the yarn in your non-hook hand. Let it pass over or between your fingers so you can regulate the flow of yarn, but do not pull it tightly. Crochet depends on a controlled amount of slack: the loop on the hook must be large enough for the hook to move through it, but not so loose that the fabric develops accidental gaps.
Stop periodically and relax your hands. Discomfort is a signal to change position or take a break, not something to work through.
2. Make a slip knot
- Form a loop with the yarn, leaving a tail several inches long.
- Pull a section of the working yarn through the loop to create an adjustable knot.
- Put the loop on the hook.
- Gently pull the tail or working yarn until the loop sits around the hook without gripping it tightly.
The slip knot creates the starting loop. It is not usually counted as a completed chain stitch unless a pattern specifically says otherwise.
3. Make a foundation chain
The foundation chain is a row of linked loops that supports the first row of stitches.

- Hold the slip knot on the hook.
- Bring the working yarn over the hook. This is a yarn over, often abbreviated yo.
- Use the hook to draw the yarn through the loop already on the hook. You have made one chain stitch.
- Repeat the yarn-over-and-pull-through motion until you have the number of chains required by your practice piece or pattern.
Count the visible V-shaped links rather than trying to count the loops on the hook. Keep the chain facing the same way and do not twist it before working into it. Make the chain slightly loose. A very tight foundation chain is difficult to insert the hook into and can make the bottom edge pucker.
If you consistently chain tightly, you can relax your tension, deliberately make larger chain loops, or—when the pattern permits—make the foundation chain with a hook one size larger and then switch to the project hook.
4. Work your first single-crochet row
For standard U.S. single-crochet practice, insert the hook into the second chain from the hook. The loop currently on the hook does not count as a chain. The first chain from the hook is usually skipped for the turning structure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook.
- Yarn over.
- Pull the yarn through the chain. You should now have two loops on the hook.
- Yarn over again.
- Pull the yarn through both loops on the hook. That is one single crochet.
- Repeat across the foundation chain, inserting into one chain at a time.
When you reach the end, count the completed single-crochet stitches. The number should match the pattern’s stated stitch count. Counting now is easier than trying to find a missing stitch several rows later.
The Craft Yarn Council’s illustrated instructions and Lion Brand’s beginner crochet guidance show this same basic construction: insert, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through the loops on the hook.
5. Turn and keep the edges straight
At the end of a row, follow the pattern’s turning-chain instruction, then turn the work so you can crochet back across the row. In a simple single-crochet practice rectangle, this commonly means making one chain, turning, and working into the stitches of the previous row. A turning chain may or may not count as a stitch depending on the pattern, so follow that pattern’s instructions.
The most common beginner problem is losing the first or last stitch. The rectangle then gradually narrows. Adding an extra stitch at an edge makes it widen.
Use this routine after every row:
- Count the stitches before turning.
- Find the first stitch of the new row before making it.
- Find the final stitch at the opposite edge; it can be easy to miss because it sits near the turning chain.
- Count again when the row is complete.
A removable stitch marker can identify the first or last stitch. Locking stitch markers are particularly useful because they can be attached directly to a stitch and removed as you work. They are optional; a contrasting scrap of yarn can serve the same purpose.

6. Make a simple practice swatch
For your first project, make a small rectangle rather than starting with a magic ring or a complicated round. A single-crochet swatch, coaster, dishcloth, or short sampler teaches the essential motions while keeping the edges visible.
- Make a foundation chain of a manageable length, such as 15–20 chains.
- Work single crochet across, beginning in the second chain from the hook.
- Make the specified turning chain, turn, and work one single crochet into each stitch across.
- Repeat rows until the piece is visibly rectangular and you feel able to identify the first and last stitch.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail.
- Pull the cut end through the final loop to fasten off.
- Thread the tail through a large-eye yarn needle and weave it back and forth through the fabric. Trim the excess with small scissors.
There is no need to discard an imperfect first swatch. Its purpose is to teach you how your tension, hook, and yarn interact. If the fabric is usable, it can become a small cloth or coaster; if not, unravel it and reuse the yarn.
7. Learn the next basic stitches
Once single crochet feels familiar, add stitches one at a time. The construction is similar, but the number of loops and the height of the stitch change.
| Stitch | U.S. abbreviation | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Slip stitch | sl st | Usually used to join, move across, or finish without adding much height. |
| Single crochet | sc | Insert, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over, then pull through both loops. |
| Half double crochet | hdc | Yarn over before inserting; after pulling up a loop, pull through all three loops. |
| Double crochet | dc | Yarn over before inserting; work the loops off in two stages, producing a taller stitch. |
Do not treat the magic ring as a required first skill. It is useful for many projects worked in the round, especially some toys and circular motifs, but a flat practice piece gives a clearer introduction to tension, stitch anatomy, counting, and turning.
8. Read a beginner crochet pattern
Learn the common U.S. abbreviations below before attempting a pattern:
| Abbreviation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ch | chain |
| sl st | slip stitch |
| sc | single crochet |
| hdc | half double crochet |
| dc | double crochet |
| st / sts | stitch / stitches |
| rep | repeat |
| rnd | round |
| yo | yarn over |
| sk | skip |
| inc | increase |
| dec | decrease |
Asterisks, brackets, and parentheses usually group or repeat instructions. For example, “*sc in next st, sk 1 st; rep from *” means to repeat the section marked by the asterisk. The pattern’s key always controls the exact interpretation because designers may use special abbreviations of their own.
Check whether the pattern uses U.S. or U.K. terms
Terminology differs between the two systems. A U.S. single crochet is called a U.K. double crochet. A U.S. double crochet is a U.K. treble crochet. Before starting, look for a statement such as “U.S. terms” or “U.K. terms,” then read the abbreviation key. The Craft Yarn Council abbreviation reference is useful for comparing standard names and chart symbols.
9. Understand gauge before making a sized item
Gauge describes how many stitches and rows fit into a specified area. It is not necessary to achieve exact gauge for a first swatch whose purpose is practice, but it matters when the finished dimensions must be accurate.

- Make a swatch larger than the measurement area specified by the pattern.
- Wash and dry it as the finished item will be treated, if the pattern gives care instructions.
- Measure the central area rather than relying on the outermost edge.
- Compare your stitch and row counts with the pattern gauge.
If you have more stitches in the same measurement than the pattern requires, your stitches are smaller and you will generally need a larger hook. If you have fewer stitches, your stitches are larger and a smaller hook may be appropriate. Recheck the swatch after changing the hook. Yarn, stitch pattern, and personal tension all affect the result, so a general hook chart cannot replace a gauge check.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Fix the most common beginner problems
The foundation chain is too tight
Use less tension and make each chain a little larger. You can also use a larger hook for the chain, if the pattern allows, before switching back to the main hook.
The rectangle widens or narrows
Count stitches at the end of every row. Look carefully for the first and last stitch, and check whether the turning chain counts as a stitch. Marking the edge stitch with a removable marker can make the row boundaries easier to see.

Do not force the hook. Loosen the working loop, relax your tension, and check whether the previous row was made too tightly. If the fabric is consistently dense, try a larger hook with a new swatch.
The fabric is stiff
Your hook may be too small for the yarn, or you may be pulling every loop too tightly. Try a larger hook or consciously allow the loops to sit more freely on the hook.
The fabric has large gaps
Your tension may be very loose, or the hook may be too large for the intended fabric. Try a smaller hook and compare another swatch. Some stitch patterns naturally have openings, so distinguish an intentional lacy design from uneven tension.
You cannot tell the front from the back
Place a removable marker in the first stitch or at the beginning of each row. You can also mark one side with a short piece of contrasting yarn until the repeated rows become familiar.

What to make after the first swatch
Choose a project that repeats a small number of skills. A dishcloth or coaster keeps the shape simple and lets you practice straight edges. A short scarf adds repetition without requiring shaping. A rectangular sampler can introduce slip stitch, half double crochet, and double crochet in separate sections. A simple granny square is a reasonable next step once you are comfortable working into stitches and, if needed, joining rounds.
Move to color changes, increases, decreases, or work in the round only after you can consistently count a basic row. This progression is more useful than choosing a project because it looks impressive: the goal is to learn the motions well enough to recognize and correct mistakes.
For a printed reference, a beginner crochet book can be useful if you prefer diagrams and instructions away from a screen. Treat it as a supplement to the free stitch instructions, and check that its terminology, edition, and availability suit your location.
Safety and accessibility
Hooks, yarn needles, scissors, and small stitch markers are tools, not toys. Keep them away from unsupervised young children and adapt materials to the learner’s age and dexterity. A left-handed crocheter can learn the same stitches using mirrored demonstrations or a left-handed tutorial; the underlying stitch construction does not change.
Quick-start checklist
- Choose smooth, light-colored medium or worsted-weight yarn.
- Match one hook to the yarn label; use millimeters as the primary size.
- Practice a relaxed grip and even yarn tension.
- Make a slip knot, then a slightly loose foundation chain.
- Work single crochet into the chain, beginning in the second chain from the hook in standard U.S. practice.
- Count the stitches at the end of every row.
- Mark the first or last stitch if the edges are difficult to identify.
- Finish by fastening off and weaving in the yarn tail.
- Check U.S. versus U.K. terminology before starting a pattern.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest crochet project for a complete beginner?
A complete beginner should start with a small flat rectangle, such as a single-crochet swatch, coaster, dishcloth, or rectangular sampler. These projects teach tension, chain stitches, turning, and stitch counting without the shaping required by garments or many amigurumi patterns.
What yarn and hook should a beginner use for crochet?
A smooth medium- or worsted-weight yarn in a light or medium color is a practical choice because its loops are easy to see. Use the hook size printed on the yarn label or specified by the pattern. Medium yarn commonly pairs with a hook around 5.5–6.5 mm, but that range is only a guideline.
What is the difference between U.S. and U.K. crochet terms?
In standard U.S. terminology, single crochet is abbreviated sc. In U.K. terminology, the same stitch is called double crochet. Always check the pattern’s terminology and abbreviation key before beginning.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do beginners need to make a gauge swatch?
Gauge is important when the finished size matters, such as for a hat, garment, fitted accessory, or dimension-specific blanket. It is less important for an initial practice swatch whose purpose is learning consistent tension and stitch counting.
Why does my crochet rectangle keep getting wider or narrower?
The usual causes are missing the first or last stitch, miscounting the turning chain, or accidentally adding an extra stitch at an edge. Count after every row and use a removable stitch marker to identify the edge stitch until it becomes easy to recognize.
The Bottom Line
The fastest dependable way to learn crochet is to practice a flat single-crochet rectangle with one suitable hook and smooth, visible yarn. Master loop tension, foundation chains, turning, and stitch counting before adding taller stitches or working in the round; those fundamentals prevent most beginner problems.
