If Photoshop’s Generative Fill command is grayed out, first check the document and target: use an RGB, 8-bit document, make an active selection, and select an unlocked raster layer. If those conditions are met, check your Photoshop version, Adobe account access, region, and internet connection. GPU troubleshooting is mainly for crashes or freezes during generation, not the first fix for a disabled command.

Start with the document, selection, and layer
Adobe says Generative Fill is disabled when the file type or selection is unsupported. Work through these checks before changing hardware or buying a plan:
- Update Photoshop to the latest available version.
- Check that the document is RGB Color and 8 Bits/Channel.
- Make an active selection on the image.
- Select an unlocked raster layer.
- Check your Adobe sign-in, managed-account access, credits or plan, region, and connection.
- If the command remains unavailable, record the relevant details and contact Adobe support or your organization’s administrator.
Do not start by buying a faster graphics card or changing GPU settings. Adobe’s GPU troubleshooting addresses crashes or freezes while using Generative Fill, not a command that is disabled before generation.
1. Update and verify Photoshop
Update Photoshop through the Creative Cloud desktop application, then restart it and try again. Adobe’s version reference listed Photoshop 27.x as current and 26.x as the prior major version on September 28, 2026; version status changes, so check Adobe’s current reference rather than relying on that snapshot.
To check your installed version, choose Photoshop > About Photoshop on macOS or Help > About Photoshop on Windows. After updating, open the document, make a selection, and check the contextual controls for Generative Fill.

If the feature still does not appear after the document and account checks below, Adobe documents resetting preferences as a possible troubleshooting step. This resets settings, so expect to lose customized preferences.

Reset Photoshop preferences
- Choose Preferences > General, select Reset Preferences on Quit, confirm, and quit Photoshop.
- Restart Photoshop and test Generative Fill again.
Resetting preferences cannot overcome an unsupported document, missing account access, regional restriction, or blocked Adobe service.
2. Set the document to RGB Color and 8 Bits/Channel
Adobe’s troubleshooting guidance specifies an RGB Color, 8 Bits/Channel document. CMYK, grayscale, and other modes, as well as 16-bit and 32-bit documents, may leave the command unavailable.
- Choose Image > Mode and select RGB Color.
- Choose Image > Mode again and select 8 Bits/Channel.
- Test Generative Fill on the working copy.
For production work, preserve the original first. Use File > Save a Copy or duplicate the document before conversion if you need to retain the original color mode or bit depth.

Use a selection tool to mark the image area you want to add to, remove from, or replace. With an active selection, look for Generative Fill in Photoshop’s contextual controls. Adobe’s workflow begins with an image and a defined area to edit.
If there is no active selection, make one and check again. If the command is still disabled, continue to the layer and account checks rather than assuming the graphics card is the cause.

4. Select an unlocked raster layer
Adobe specifies an unlocked raster layer for this troubleshooting case. Text layers, vector shapes, and Smart Objects do not meet that raster-layer condition. Duplicate editable content before rasterizing it, because rasterizing removes its live text, vector, or Smart Object behavior.

Confirm that Photoshop or Creative Cloud is signed in with the Adobe ID associated with your Photoshop access. If the account state seems stale, sign out, restart Creative Cloud and Photoshop, and sign in again.
Enterprise and Education accounts may have generative-AI access restricted by an administrator. If you use a managed account, ask your administrator to confirm whether access is allowed for your account or profile.
6. Check credits and plan access
Do not assume that credits are the cause of a grayed-out command. First distinguish a disabled command from a message that appears when generation is attempted. Check your Adobe account or Photoshop’s Generative Credits Usage panel, if available, for your balance and renewal information.

Adobe’s October 1, 2026 guidance says most standard generative AI features using Adobe Firefly models, including Generative Fill, use one credit per generation. Adobe notes that some features use more than one credit and plan access varies. If Adobe indicates that your applicable access is exhausted, its guidance is to wait for the monthly reset or consider an eligible plan or credit add-on.

A plan change will not fix an unsupported document mode, missing selection, or unsuitable layer. Consider it only if your account’s access or balance is actually the issue.

Photoshop generative AI requires an internet connection. Firewalls, proxies, or VPNs may block Adobe AI services. If your policies allow it, test without a VPN; on a managed network, ask the administrator whether the required Adobe services are allowed rather than disabling security controls yourself.
Adobe lists China, Russia, Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria among countries where Photoshop generative AI features are unavailable. This is an example list, not necessarily exhaustive; check Adobe’s current availability information because regional rules can change.
8. Match the fix to the symptom

9. Escalate with useful details
If Generative Fill remains disabled after the document, layer, and access checks, contact Adobe support or your organization’s administrator. Include your Photoshop version, operating system, document mode and bit depth, selected layer type, account type, country or region, and any warning shown. Do not share your account credentials publicly.

Why is Generative Fill grayed out in Photoshop?
