A strong Canva portfolio is not a collection of pretty images. It is a carefully edited argument for why someone should hire, commission, interview, or follow you. For a painter, that means showing your best paintings in a coherent sequence, explaining the ideas and process behind them, and making it effortless to contact you.
A strong Canva portfolio is not a collection of pretty images. It is a carefully edited argument for why someone should hire, commission, interview, or follow you. For a painter, that means showing your best paintings in a coherent sequence, explaining the ideas and process behind them, and making it effortless to contact you.
Canva removes much of the technical work. You can start with a portfolio website template, replace the sample content with your paintings, add project stories, link to your galleries or social profiles, and publish a one-page website. The quality of the result, however, still depends on your choices: which paintings you include, how accurately you photograph them, how you describe your work, and whether the finished page works on a phone.

1. Decide what your portfolio needs to achieve
Before opening Canva, complete this sentence:
“After viewing my portfolio, I want the right person to ______.”

Your answer determines the structure and call to action.
- Seeking gallery representation: show a cohesive body of work, an artist statement, exhibition history, contact details, and a downloadable résumé or CV.
- Seeking commissions: show finished commissioned paintings, explain your process, describe sizes and media where relevant, and use a CTA such as “Request a commission.”
- Applying to art school, residencies, or exhibitions: prioritize selected works, dates, dimensions, media, a concise biography, and application-ready contact information.
- Selling paintings: show available works clearly, include titles, dimensions, media, prices or an inquiry instruction, and explain shipping or collection only if you can keep that information current.
- Building an audience: use a visually dominant gallery, a short introduction, links to your social channels, and an email or newsletter CTA.
Do not try to make one page serve every possible audience. A gallery curator may need a different selection from a private commission client. If necessary, create one main portfolio and separate pages or PDFs for specific applications.
2. Curate the paintings before designing
The most common portfolio mistake is showing everything. More work does not automatically create more credibility; it often makes the strongest work harder to remember.
Recommended Free Tools
Begin with a large working folder, then reduce it to approximately three to six projects, series, or bodies of work for the main page. A “project” for a painter might be:
- a cohesive landscape series;
- a portrait commission;
- a group of abstract works exploring one material or idea;
- a recent exhibition;
- a mural or public-art project; or
- a personal collection developed through a defined period.
Choose work that is both excellent and relevant to your intended viewer. Remove pieces that are weak, poorly photographed, unrelated to your current direction, or included only because they took a long time to make.
Prepare the information for every featured work
Collect the following before you begin laying out the page:
- Title
- Year completed
- Media and materials
- Dimensions
- Series, exhibition, or commission label if applicable
- A short description of the idea, brief, or goal
- Your specific contribution if other people were involved
- Process images, sketches, studies, or installation photographs
- Final images and detail views
- Outcome, exhibition information, sale status, or lesson where relevant
Never invent sales figures, exhibition results, audience numbers, or client outcomes. If a painting has no measurable outcome, describe what you explored or learned instead.

A polished layout cannot rescue a dark, distorted, or low-resolution photograph. Photograph paintings in even light, keep the camera parallel to the artwork, and avoid glare. If you cannot produce accurate images yourself, consider having important work photographed professionally.
Keep the original high-resolution files separately from the web-ready versions. Use consistent crops for thumbnails, but do not crop away information that helps viewers understand the painting. A detail image can be useful for texture, brushwork, or surface, provided it is clearly labeled as a detail.
Use descriptive file names such as river-studies-2025-oil-on-canvas.jpg rather than strings of camera-generated numbers. This will not guarantee search traffic, but it makes your media library easier to manage.

4. Start a Canva portfolio website
In Canva, search for “Portfolio Website” and choose a template, or start with a blank website design. You can also search for a direction such as:
- photography portfolio;
- illustration portfolio;
- artist portfolio;
- minimalist portfolio;
- freelancer portfolio; or
- graphic design portfolio.
For painters, photography and illustration templates can be useful starting points because they give the artwork visual priority. Do not choose a template simply because it has the most decorative effects. Choose one whose spacing, image proportions, typography, and navigation can support your work.
Use the template as a system, not as a finished identity. Replace every sample headline, image, testimonial, and button. Delete sections that do not serve your goal. Change a layout when it makes your paintings feel cramped or forces you to write generic copy.
If you are ready to begin, create your portfolio website in Canva using a template or blank website design, then build the structure below around your strongest work.
5. Establish a visual system before filling the page
Your paintings should be the visual focus. The website design should create rhythm and make the work easier to compare.
Choose:
- One display typeface for your name and major headings.
- One readable body typeface for captions, descriptions, and contact information.
- A restrained color palette that does not compete with the paintings.
- A consistent thumbnail treatment, such as the same aspect ratio and similar spacing.
- A repeatable heading hierarchy so visitors can tell the difference between a series, a painting, and its caption.
- One button style for the primary action.
Let the character of your work guide the interface. A vivid, expressionist portfolio may benefit from a quiet neutral background. A restrained monochrome series might support stronger typography or a more distinctive accent color. Keep logos and decorative elements subordinate to the paintings.
Check contrast between text and background, especially for small captions and buttons. Canva provides accessibility-related checks for issues such as contrast, typography, and alternative text, but a tool cannot decide whether your description is meaningful or whether the page feels understandable to a human visitor.
6. Use a clear one-page hierarchy
A practical Canva portfolio website can follow this order:
Hero section
Open with your name, specialty, and a concise value proposition. For example:
“Maya Chen is an oil painter creating atmospheric landscapes from the Pacific Northwest.”

Add one primary CTA, such as View selected work, Request a commission, or Contact the studio. Avoid several competing buttons above the fold.
Selected work
Show three to six strong projects or series. Lead with the work that best represents your current direction, not necessarily the oldest or most technically elaborate piece.
Project stories or case studies
Give each important project enough context to be understood by someone outside the art world. A viewer should know what they are seeing, why it matters, and what your role was.

Write a short biography in plain language. Include your location if it is useful for commissions, exhibitions, or studio visits. Mention your specialties, relevant experience, and current focus without turning the section into an unedited life history.
Services, availability, or skills
Include this section only if it supports your goal. Possible items include portrait commissions, murals, workshops, illustration, art licensing, or private lessons. Do not list services you are not prepared to provide.
Résumé, CV, or credentials
Add a downloadable résumé or concise timeline for exhibitions, education, awards, residencies, and publications. Check that the file opens correctly and is still current.
Testimonials or client logos
Use reviews only when you have permission and can attribute them accurately. Do not imply an endorsement that was not given.

Contact section and footer
End with an email address, contact form or linked form where appropriate, and relevant social profiles. The footer can include ownership information, essential navigation, and policy links if your situation requires them.
7. Turn each painting or series into a visual story
A grid of images shows taste, but a short story shows judgment. Use a repeatable structure so visitors can scan the page.
| Section | What to include | Example for a painter |
|---|---|---|
| Project title | Name, year, media, dimensions | Low Tide, 2025 — oil on linen, 24 × 30 in |
| Brief or question | The idea, commission, or problem | “A study of changing light along the estuary.” |
| Process | Two or three meaningful stages | Location sketches, color studies, and an underpainting. |
| Final work | Accurate full image plus useful details | Full painting followed by a labeled surface detail. |
| Outcome | Exhibition, commission delivery, availability, or lesson | “Created for the 2025 coastal studies series; available for inquiry.” |
Prioritize the final painting, then show enough process to demonstrate decisions. Do not overwhelm the page with every sketch. For a commission, explain the brief and how you translated it into the final piece. For a series, explain the common thread. For an installation or mural, show scale and context as well as close-up details.

8. Add useful links and one clear next step
Canva lets you add links to elements in a design. Use links whose destinations are obvious and test each one in preview mode and again after publishing.
Choose one primary CTA:
- Request a commission
- Ask about available work
- View my résumé
- Book a studio consultation
- Email the artist
Secondary links can lead to Instagram, LinkedIn, Behance, a full writing archive, a shop, or a downloadable PDF. Keep the destination clear. A button labeled “Click here” tells visitors nothing; “View exhibition CV” does.
Do not assume a Canva website automatically provides a sophisticated CRM, custom application workflow, or full form backend. If you use a form, verify how submissions are collected on your current Canva plan and test it with a real submission before sharing the URL.
9. Make the portfolio accessible
Accessibility is part of presentation quality. A visitor who cannot read your captions or understand your image descriptions cannot properly evaluate your work.
- Add meaningful alternative text to important images. Describe the subject, medium, composition, and relevant visual information rather than writing “painting.”
- Use readable type sizes and sufficient contrast.
- Do not communicate essential information through color alone.
- Add captions or text alternatives when video or audio carries important information.
- Keep animation restrained and avoid motion that distracts from the work or makes the page difficult to use.
- Check whether headings, links, and buttons make sense when read in sequence.
Canva describes accessibility features including alt text, design checks, captions, keyboard shortcuts, and testing related to screen readers such as VoiceOver, NVDA, and JAWS. These tools do not make every published portfolio accessible automatically. Review the finished page yourself with keyboard navigation and, where practical, an assistive-technology check.
10. Review the mobile version and basic SEO settings
Canva portfolio templates are designed to support mobile presentation, but responsive design is not a substitute for review. Use a phone-sized preview and check:
- Whether the first painting appears at the right point in the page;
- Image crops and focal points;
- Text wrapping and caption readability;
- Button size and spacing;
- Navigation and scroll behavior;
- Whether animations delay comprehension;
- Whether the page remains usable while images load.
For a public portfolio, configure a descriptive page title, a concise meta description, a readable URL slug, and the search-engine visibility setting available in your website settings. These controls help describe the page to search engines, but they do not guarantee rankings or traffic.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.11. Preview and publish the Canva website
Before publishing, use Canva’s Preview function and run this checklist:
- Read every heading, caption, and biography for spelling and factual errors.
- Confirm that every painting title, date, medium, and dimension is accurate.
- Check that all images are your work or are used with appropriate permission.
- Remove confidential client material and identifying information that should not be public.
- Open every button, social link, résumé download, and contact route.
- Review the page on a phone-sized viewport.
- Confirm that the first screen explains who you are and what visitors should do next.
- Check image quality and loading behavior.
When it is ready, choose Publish Website. Depending on your location, plan, and current Canva options, you may be able to publish on a Canva-hosted my.canva.site address, purchase a custom domain, or connect an existing domain. Canva also describes HTTPS/SSL for published sites, with features such as password protection and analytics dependent on supported options or plans. Check the controls shown in your own account rather than relying on an old pricing comparison.
A free Canva URL is suitable for a student application, quick freelance launch, temporary project, or early portfolio. A custom domain is more appropriate when you are building a professional identity that you expect to maintain. The important factor is not the domain extension; it is whether the address is easy to share and the information behind it stays current.

12. Keep the portfolio current
Set a review reminder every few months and update the portfolio when you have materially stronger work, a new specialization, a changed email address, or a new résumé. Remove weak or obsolete pieces rather than allowing the page to grow indefinitely.
During each review, recheck:
- Contact details and inquiry instructions;
- Social profiles and external links;
- Résumé or CV download;
- Availability and prices, if shown;
- Domain renewal and publishing settings;
- Privacy and permissions for client work;
- Mobile presentation;
- Analytics or visit insights, if your current Canva setup supports them.
Online portfolio or printed portfolio?
For most painters, the online portfolio should be the primary version because it is easy to share and update. A printed version is still valuable at interviews, networking events, studio visits, client meetings, portfolio reviews, and places where internet access is unreliable.
You can export or print selected Canva pages and arrange them as a physical presentation. An optional portfolio presentation book with clear sleeves can hold printed Canva pages, painting sheets, résumé pages, certificates, or artwork. Match the book to the paper you intend to use: confirm the printed page size, sleeve dimensions, orientation, and sleeve count before buying. A flip-through presentation book suits standard sheets and finished pages; a larger art portfolio case is better for boards, oversized prints, or loose artwork.

Common Canva portfolio mistakes
- Showing too many paintings: edit for relevance and quality.
- Leaving template content in place: replace every sample image, headline, testimonial, and button.
- Using inconsistent photography: correct lighting, crops, and image quality before uploading.
- Hiding your role: explain exactly what you created in collaborative, commissioned, or group projects.
- Publishing confidential work: obtain permission or use a password-protected/private alternative where appropriate.
- Omitting contact information: visual polish is not useful if interested viewers cannot reach you.
- Relying on SEO settings as a ranking strategy: metadata helps with basic description, not guaranteed visibility.
- Trusting mobile responsiveness without checking: review crops, wrapping, order, and buttons yourself.
- Overusing animation: motion should support the work, not slow or obscure it.
- Making unsupported claims: publish measured outcomes only, not guessed conversion rates or search results.
- Forgetting maintenance: old email addresses and broken social links quickly undermine trust.
Final quality test
Ask someone unfamiliar with your work to look at the published page for one minute, then answer:
- What kind of artist am I?
- Which body of work do I want visitors to remember?
- What should an interested person do next?
If they cannot answer, simplify the page. A stunning Canva portfolio is not created by adding more effects, sections, or animations. It comes from disciplined curation, clear stories, consistent branding, accessible presentation, accurate artwork information, and a frictionless next step.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I create a portfolio website in Canva?
Search Canva for “Portfolio Website,” then choose a template or start with a blank website design. Replace all sample text and images, remove irrelevant sections, add your paintings and project stories, preview the page, and select “Publish Website.”
How many paintings should I include in a Canva portfolio?
For the main page, show approximately three to six of your strongest and most relevant projects or series. A smaller, carefully edited selection is usually more persuasive than displaying every painting you have made.
Can I use a custom domain for a Canva portfolio website?
Yes. Canva can publish a portfolio on a Canva-hosted my.canva.site address, and depending on your country, plan, and available options, it may also allow you to purchase or connect a custom domain.
Do I need a presentation book for a Canva portfolio?
No. A portfolio presentation book is only an optional offline companion for printed Canva pages, artwork sheets, or résumé pages. It is useful for interviews, studio visits, and portfolio reviews but is not needed to publish a website.
The Bottom Line
Use Canva to lower the technical barrier, not to replace the editorial work. Select a small group of relevant paintings, photograph them accurately, explain your process and role, build a consistent one-page hierarchy, test accessibility and mobile presentation, and publish with a clear way to contact you.
