Adobe Express can remove an image background automatically on desktop and mobile. Select the image, choose Remove Background, review the cutout, and export as a Transparent PNG if you need to reuse the subject on another background.
The result is an automatic first pass rather than a guaranteed pixel-perfect mask. Fine details, low-contrast edges, hair, thin objects, and semi-transparent areas may need special attention.
Adobe Express can remove an image background automatically on both desktop and mobile. Select the image, choose Remove Background, inspect the cutout, and export it as a Transparent PNG if you need to place the subject over another color, photograph, collage, or design.
The important limitation is that this is an automatic first pass, not a guarantee of pixel-perfect masking. Hair, thin lines, semi-transparent materials, shadows, overlapping objects, and edges with little contrast against the background may be clipped or partly removed. Review the result before using it in a finished design.

Remove an image background in Adobe Express on desktop
- Open Adobe Express in a supported desktop browser.
- Open an existing design or choose the option to create a new one.
- Select the image on the canvas.
- In the left-side Image panel, select Remove Background.
- Wait for Express to detect the main subject and remove the surrounding background.
- Inspect the cutout, especially around hair, fingers, thin objects, transparent areas, and low-contrast edges.
- When the result is acceptable, select Download.
Adobe says that fine details and low-contrast areas can be removed during automatic background removal. If the subject has clear edges and little overlap with other objects, the first-pass result is more likely to be usable. Adobe’s desktop background-removal instructions also state that selecting Remove Background again on the selected image restores the background.
How to save a genuinely transparent PNG
Removing the background from the image is only part of the process. The canvas itself can still have a fill, and the wrong export format can turn the apparent cutout into a file with a solid rectangle behind it.
- Click outside the image or canvas so the image is no longer selected.
- Open the Background controls.
- Choose No fill.
- Select Transparent PNG as the download format.
- Download the file.
PNG is the appropriate choice when transparent pixels must be preserved. JPEG does not preserve transparency, so exporting a cutout as a JPEG is unsuitable when you plan to place it over another background.
A simple quality check is to open the downloaded PNG or place it over a strongly contrasting color. If a white or colored rectangle appears around the subject, return to Express and confirm both settings: the canvas is set to No fill, and the export format is Transparent PNG. Adobe describes the resulting PNG as suitable for placing on another backdrop or continuing to edit in Express. See Adobe’s official export instructions for the current controls.
Remove a background in the Adobe Express mobile app
- Open a design in the Adobe Express mobile app.
- Select the image.
- Tap Remove background.
- Review the automatic cutout.
- Tap the download icon to save it.
- If you need transparency, use the background-color control, choose No fill, and select Transparent PNG as the file format.
The mobile editor includes Restore background, so you can reverse the removal within the design if the result is not useful. Adobe’s mobile help page documents this workflow. The app is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Use the standalone Remove Background quick action
If you do not need to start with a complete design, Adobe also provides a standalone Remove Background quick action. Upload an image, let Express detect and remove the background, then download the result as a transparent PNG or continue editing it in Express.

For this quick action, Adobe lists support for JPEG, JPG, PNG, and WebP files up to 40 MB. If an upload fails, check the file extension and size before troubleshooting the browser or app.
Replace the removed background with a new design
You do not have to export immediately after creating the cutout. Keep the isolated subject in the Express editor and build a new composition behind it. Depending on the project, you can add:
- a solid color;
- another photograph;
- a template;
- text and graphics;
- a product or promotional layout; or
- other elements for a collage, social post, flyer, or presentation.
Use No fill and Transparent PNG when the goal is a reusable cutout asset. Add the replacement background before exporting when the goal is a finished social graphic, poster, presentation, or other complete composition. The latter should be exported in the format appropriate for its destination rather than automatically as a transparent PNG.
Choose the right source image
Automatic background removal works best when the subject is visually distinct from its surroundings. Before uploading, choose an image with:

- clear separation between the subject and background;
- well-defined outer edges;
- minimal overlap with other objects; and
- enough resolution to show the details you need in the final design.
Expect more cleanup or a less reliable result when the image contains:
- hair or fur with wispy edges;
- thin wires, straps, branches, or lines;
- glass, smoke, lace, or other semi-transparent material;
- strong shadows that blend into the background;
- objects touching or overlapping the subject;
- subject and background colors that are very similar; or
- intricate fine detail around the silhouette.
Adobe’s documentation warns specifically that fine details and low-contrast areas may be lost. The cited instructions do not describe a dedicated edge-refinement brush or a full manual masking tool in this particular background-removal quick action. For professional retouching, inspect the exported result carefully rather than assuming every edge is exact.

Image background removal is different from video background removal
Adobe Express treats still-image and video background removal as separate features.
On desktop
- Create or open a video project.
- Upload a video or select a video template.
- Select the video on the canvas or timeline.
- Open the Video panel and choose Remove background.
On mobile
- Open the video project.
- Select the clip.
- Tap the Remove background icon below the timeline.
- Use Restore background if you need to reverse the change.
Adobe’s current pricing comparison lists Remove Image Background among the Free plan’s Quick Actions, while Remove Video Background appears among additional Premium editing tools. Plan names, prices, regional availability, and feature entitlements can change, so check the current Adobe Express pricing page before subscribing.
Do you need Adobe Express Premium?
For the ordinary image-background-removal workflow, Adobe’s current comparison indicates that Premium is not necessarily required: Remove Image Background is listed as a Free-plan Quick Action. The U.S. pricing material checked for this guide lists Adobe Express Free at US$0.00 and Premium at US$9.99 per month, but those figures and entitlements are time- and region-sensitive.
Premium may matter if you also need features such as premium assets, broader asset libraries, advanced animation, or video background removal. If your immediate goal is simply to isolate a subject from a still image, start with Adobe Express Free and verify the plan details for your location before paying for additional tools.
Desktop requirements and browser problems
Adobe’s current desktop-web requirements list the following general requirements for Adobe Express:
- Operating system: Windows 11 or later, macOS 11 or later, or ChromeOS.
- Browsers: Chrome 100 or later, Edge 107 or later, Safari 17 or later, or Firefox 117 or later.
- Browser and system features: JavaScript, hardware acceleration, WebGL2, and WebAssembly.
- Memory: at least 4 GB.
These are Adobe Express desktop-web requirements generally, not a separately stated hardware specification for only the Remove Background operation. Consult Adobe’s current technical requirements if the editor does not load or a tool is missing.

Troubleshooting Adobe Express Remove Background
The background is still visible
Make sure the image itself is selected. The command must be applied to the image, not merely to the canvas or another design element. Then run Remove Background again and inspect the result.
The download has a white rectangle
Set the canvas background to No fill and export as Transparent PNG. A JPEG export cannot preserve transparent pixels.
Hair, thin objects, or edges are clipped
This is a known limitation of automatic separation in difficult areas. Try a source image with stronger contrast and less overlap, then inspect the result at its intended display size. Adobe warns that fine details and low-contrast regions may be removed. If the cutout must be exact, this particular quick action may not provide enough manual control.
The upload fails
For the standalone quick action, confirm that the file is JPEG, JPG, PNG, or WebP and that it is no larger than 40 MB.
The desktop feature is missing
Confirm that an image is selected and that the Image panel is open. Then check JavaScript, hardware acceleration, the browser version, and the operating-system requirements. Updating to a supported browser or correcting a disabled browser feature may restore the editor controls.
I want to remove a person or object but keep the background
That is the opposite of removing an image background. Background removal isolates the main subject by deleting what surrounds it. If you want to erase an object while retaining the scene behind it, use Adobe’s separate Generative AI Remove object workflow instead.

Best workflow for a clean result
- Start with a clear, high-contrast source image.
- Apply Remove Background to the selected image.
- Zoom in or otherwise inspect the silhouette and fine details.
- Restore the background and try a different source image if important parts were removed.
- For a reusable asset, set the canvas to No fill and download a Transparent PNG.
- For a finished design, add the new background and export the completed composition.
- Open or place the downloaded file over a contrasting background to verify that transparency was preserved.

Yes. Adobe’s current plan comparison lists Remove Image Background as a Free-plan Quick Action. Premium may be relevant for broader editing features or video background removal, but it is not necessarily required for removing the background from an ordinary still image.
