The best Polaroid camera for most people is the Polaroid Flip. It offers full-size prints, sonar autofocus, four focus zones, an exposure warning, a strong flash, and both i-Type and 600 film compatibility without the premium price or learning curve of the I-2.

The right alternative depends on your priority: choose the Polaroid I-2 for advanced manual control, the Polaroid Now+ Generation 3 for app-based creativity, the Polaroid Now Generation 3 for straightforward full-size shooting, or the Polaroid Go Generation 3 for the smallest camera. This guide covers the current U.S. models and film choices as of August 12, 2026.

Quick comparison

Best for Camera Why choose it Main compromise
Most people Polaroid Flip Sonar autofocus, four focus zones, exposure warnings, a strong flash, and full-size film Larger and heavier than the Go
Advanced analog photography Polaroid I-2 Manual exposure, continuous autofocus, LiDAR metering, long exposures, and flash synchronization Expensive and substantially more demanding to use
Creative control Polaroid Now+ Generation 3 App-connected manual, aperture-priority, remote, double-exposure, and other creative modes Its biggest advantage depends on using the phone app
Simple full-size photography Polaroid Now Generation 3 Classic point-and-shoot operation with autofocus, self-timer, and double exposure Fewer advanced controls than the Now+ or I-2
Portability Polaroid Go Generation 3 The smallest body, selfie mirror, stronger flash, and pocket-sized prints Smaller images and a separate Go-only film format

1. Best Polaroid camera for most people: Polaroid Flip

The Polaroid Flip instant camera is the best all-around choice if you want full-size Polaroid photographs without spending I-2 money or learning manual exposure. It combines several useful forms of assistance: sonar autofocus, a four-zone hyperfocal lens system, scene analysis that warns about likely under- or overexposure, and a built-in flash designed for more demanding indoor scenes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its four focus zones cover approximately 0.4 meters to infinity. That makes the Flip more forgiving than a simple fixed-focus instant camera when your subject is close, at a normal portrait distance, or farther away. It also has Bluetooth app control, a tripod mount, and compatibility with both i-Type and 600 film.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 Instant Camera - Lilac Purple
  • Compact and cute design. Easily twist the lens to turn on and off
  • Built-in selfie mirror for easy selfies Close-up mode with parallax correction
  • Features automatic exposure and flash control for bright photos that are not “washed-out”
  • Prints out high-quality, 2” x 3” INSTAX MINI instant photos in approximately five seconds (Development time thereafter is approximately 90 seconds). Uses INSTAX MINI instant film, which is sold separately.
  • Includes: Hand strap, user manual, (2) AA batteries and 1-year limited warranty

The Flip’s physical design is part of the appeal. TechRadar selected it as its best instant camera for fun design, highlighting the flip-up construction, the way the lens is protected when the camera is packed away, and the sonar-zone autofocus. Those are particularly sensible advantages for parties, family events, travel, and casual photography, where speed and fewer focusing mistakes matter more than extensive exposure control.

The compromise is size. This is a full-size Polaroid camera, not a pocket camera, and the body is considerably larger and heavier than the Go. The distinctive folding design will also be a matter of taste. If you want the simplest full-size Polaroid experience and do not need the Flip’s extra focusing and exposure assistance, the Now Gen 3 costs less and is easier to justify.

2. Best Polaroid camera for advanced analog photographers: Polaroid I-2

The Polaroid I-2 instant camera is the specialist choice for photographers who want to control the exposure rather than simply accept the camera’s automatic decision. It has built-in manual controls, aperture settings from f/8 through f/64, shutter speeds from 1/250 second to 30 seconds, and a bulb mode for exposures longer than 30 seconds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its other advanced features include continuous autofocus, a LiDAR ranging meter, Bluetooth, and external flash synchronization. The I-2 works with SX-70, 600, and i-Type film, giving it a broader film-compatibility list than the other current models in this guide.

That specification makes the I-2 the most capable current analog body for deliberate work such as controlling depth of field, balancing flash with ambient light, photographing in unusually bright or dark conditions, and creating long-exposure effects. It does not automatically make every photograph better. The benefit is control and repeatability for someone who understands why they want a particular aperture or shutter speed.

The price reflects that specialization. Polaroid’s comparison page listed the I-2 at $599.99 when the source was captured, far above the listed prices of the Now+ and Now. Prices and availability can change, but the gap illustrates the buying decision: the I-2 is difficult to recommend as a first Polaroid camera unless you specifically value its manual controls.

Choose the I-2 if you already think in terms of exposure, focus distance, depth of field, flash, and shutter speed. Choose the Flip or Now Gen 3 if you mainly want to point, shoot, and enjoy the unpredictability of instant film without managing those variables.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Best Polaroid camera for creative controls: Polaroid Now+ Generation 3

The Polaroid Now+ Generation 3 is the middle ground between a straightforward automatic camera and the highly specialized I-2. It retains the familiar full-size Now body but adds Bluetooth-connected controls through the Polaroid app.

Rank #2
Polaroid Go Generation 2 - Mini Instant Camera + Film Bundle (16 Photos Included) - Black (6280)
  • Wearable and take anywhere-able: As the Polaroid’s smallest instant camera, the Polaroid Go fits in almost every bag, tote, pocket and pack. So you can capture real life wherever, whenever.
  • Takes clearer, brighter, even nicer pictures: Thanks to the large aperture range, precise light sensor and on-point-exposure settings, the Polaroid Go Generation 2 image quality is better than ever.
  • Built-in selfie mirror: Say cheese to yourself in the Polaroid Go’s reflective viewfinder – aka ‘selfie mirror’.
  • Double-exposure and self-timer modes: Take photos so nice you shot them twice with double-exposure mode. Or set up the perfect self-portrait with the touch of the self timer button.
  • Shoots pocketable Polaroid Go film and shoots 15 film packs with a single charge.

The app provides aperture priority, remote control, double exposure, self-timer, manual mode, and other creative functions. Those tools are useful for light painting, remote portraits, carefully timed compositions, and experiments that are difficult to execute with a basic point-and-shoot camera.

The camera itself includes two-zone autofocus, a built-in tripod mount, a rechargeable battery, and compatibility with i-Type and 600 film. The Generation 3 model is not simply interchangeable with every older Now+ listing: Polaroid describes Gen 3 as having optimized exposure behavior in bright lighting and a body made with 40% recycled materials. Check the exact generation before buying camera-specific accessories or assuming that an older filter bundle has the same compatibility.

The Now+ Gen 3 is a good choice when you want to learn more deliberate instant photography but do not want to pay the I-2’s premium. It is a poor value if you will never connect the camera to a phone. In that case, the standard Now Gen 3 delivers the full-size format and basic creative modes without making the app part of the experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Best simple full-size Polaroid: Polaroid Now Generation 3

The Polaroid Now Generation 3 is the sensible beginner recommendation for someone who wants classic full-size Polaroid prints and a familiar point-and-shoot workflow. It has two-zone autofocus, a rechargeable battery, a tripod mount, self-timer, and double-exposure modes, but it does not center the experience around app-connected manual controls.

Polaroid lists the Now Gen 3 as compatible with i-Type and 600 film. The company also describes improvements to the light-meter position, ranging sensor, autofocus system, and exposure optimization compared with earlier versions. Those changes make the Gen 3 the model to look for when shopping for a new Now rather than assuming an older generation has the same behavior.

This is the model to buy when your priorities are simplicity, full-size images, and a lower entry price than the I-2. It is also a better fit than the Now+ for a recipient who may not want to install an app. You still get self-timer and double exposure for occasional creative work, while the basic shooting process remains uncomplicated.

Polaroid’s U.S. shop showed a $129.99 price for the Now Gen 3 when the source was captured. Another Polaroid comparison page listed a different Now price, which is a reminder that direct-store promotions, regional pricing, and model bundles can change. Treat any price in this guide as a snapshot, not a permanent list price.

5. Best compact Polaroid camera: Polaroid Go Generation 3

The Polaroid Go Generation 3 is the right choice when carrying the camera matters more than getting a large print. Polaroid describes it as the world’s smallest instant analog camera. Its official dimensions are 106.5 × 83.8 × 64.6 millimeters, and it weighs 251.9 grams without film.

The Go Gen 3 includes a selfie mirror, a stronger flash, a self-timer, double exposure, and a rechargeable battery. Polaroid also describes its selfies as sharper and more zoomed-in than those from the previous generation. Digital Camera World’s same-batch comparison reported sharper and better-exposed results from the Go Gen 3 than from the Go Gen 2, although those observations came from that publication’s testing, not from a controlled test by this site.

There is one decision you must make before buying: Go film is not the same as full-size Polaroid film. The Go format measures 66.6 × 53.9 millimeters overall, with a 47 × 46 millimeter image area. That is dramatically smaller than the 79 × 77 millimeter image area of standard full-size i-Type film.

The current Polaroid Go film ecosystem is also exclusive to Go cameras. Polaroid’s film page lists eight photos per pack, and a direct-store listing showed $11.50 for a single pack within a multipack listing when the source was captured. Digital Camera World also noted that Go film costs more per shot than Instax Mini film. The Go is compact, but its smaller prints and ongoing film commitment are not minor details.

Buy the Go Gen 3 for travel, day trips, parties, scrapbooks, or casual selfies where a small print is a feature rather than a defect. Do not buy it expecting the same physical photograph as a full-size Polaroid camera.

Full-size Polaroid film versus Go film

Choose the film format before choosing the camera. It determines the size of every photograph you make and the consumables you will continue buying after the camera purchase.

Film system Compatible current cameras Print characteristics Important limitation
Full-size i-Type and 600 Flip, I-2, Now+ Gen 3, and Now Gen 3, with the exact compatibility varying by film 107 × 88 millimeters overall; approximately 79 × 77 millimeters image area for standard i-Type film Eight exposures per standard pack; check the camera and film label before buying
Go film Go cameras only 66.6 × 53.9 millimeters overall; 47 × 46 millimeters image area Not interchangeable with full-size i-Type or 600 film

The four full-size cameras in this comparison are the Flip, I-2, Now+ Gen 3, and Now Gen 3. They produce the larger, familiar Polaroid format. The Go uses its own smaller film. This is a long-term compatibility decision, not just a choice between camera sizes.

i-Type versus 600 film

Modern rechargeable Polaroid cameras are generally best matched with i-Type film. The Flip, Now+ Gen 3, and Now Gen 3 officially support both i-Type and 600 film, while the I-2 supports i-Type, 600, and SX-70 film. Polaroid describes the Now as working best with i-Type film.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

600 film remains useful if you own a compatible older camera or want a film type that is listed for a particular vintage body. Do not assume that every Polaroid camera accepts every full-size film pack: check the exact camera model and film format before ordering. In particular, i-Type compatibility for a new rechargeable camera should not be generalized to every vintage 600 or SX-70 camera.

For most buyers of a new Flip, Now, or Now+, Polaroid i-Type film is the natural recurring purchase. I-2 owners can choose among the broader list of supported SX-70, 600, and i-Type films, but should still confirm the exposure and battery requirements of the particular film they plan to use.

Which Polaroid should you buy?

  • Buy the Flip if you want the best balance of ease, focusing assistance, flash capability, and full-size photographs.
  • Buy the I-2 if manual aperture and shutter-speed control, continuous focus, LiDAR metering, flash synchronization, and long exposures justify a premium price.
  • Buy the Now+ Gen 3 if you want app-based manual control, aperture priority, remote shooting, and creative experiments.
  • Buy the Now Gen 3 if you want the classic full-size Polaroid experience with autofocus and a simple workflow.
  • Buy the Go Gen 3 if the smallest practical camera and smallest prints are more important than full-size image area.

What about filters, tripods, and other accessories?

Accessories should follow the camera rather than determine the purchase. The Flip, Now+ Gen 3, and Now Gen 3 have tripod mounts, which can help with self-timer portraits, light painting, and long or carefully composed exposures. The I-2’s external flash synchronization is more relevant to advanced lighting setups than a generic accessory kit. The Go’s strongest practical advantages are its small body, selfie mirror, and built-in flash.

For the current Now and Now+ cameras, a Polaroid Now filter set can be a reasonable creative add-on, but verify that the listing explicitly supports the Generation 3 model. Older-generation filter bundles should not be assumed to fit simply because they use the Now name. A case, strap, or small storage solution can also be useful, but none changes the underlying film size or compatibility decision.

How to store and handle Polaroid film

Film care affects the result as much as the camera choice. Polaroid recommends the following:

  1. Store unopened film flat in a refrigerator between 4 and 18°C (41 and 65°F).
  2. Do not freeze the film.
  3. Let refrigerated film return to room temperature for at least one hour before shooting.
  4. For best results, use the film within 12 months of its production date.
  5. Keep newly ejected photographs shielded from strong light during the early part of development.
  6. Clean the camera rollers regularly, since residue on the rollers can affect the photograph.

These requirements are easy to overlook when comparing camera bodies. A full-size camera with an attractive sale price still commits you to eight-shot film packs, storage, and recurring consumable costs. The Go lowers the carrying burden but commits you to smaller, Go-specific packs.

Should you buy a vintage Polaroid?

Vintage 600 and SX-70 cameras can be worthwhile enthusiast or collectible purchases, especially when the appeal is the original body, folding design, or a particular shooting experience. They should not be treated as automatically cheaper versions of the current cameras.

Condition matters. Battery contacts, rollers, shutter operation, light leaks, and prior storage can all affect a used camera. A refurbished example from a reliable specialist is a different proposition from an untested marketplace listing. Film age and storage history matter too.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Polaroid currently produces five integral film formats: Go, 600, i-Type, SX-70, and 8×10. That does not mean every historical Polaroid format remains supported. Polaroid lists packfilm, roll film, 35mm, Super 8, iZone, 500 film, Spectra/Image film, and 4×5 film among unsupported formats. Avoid recommending a Spectra/Image or packfilm camera as a practical everyday choice merely because a used example is still available.

Prices and availability

Prices change with promotions, bundles, retailers, and regional stock. The captured Polaroid comparison page listed the I-2 at $599.99, the Now+ at $149.99, and the Now at $119.99; Polaroid’s U.S. shop showed the Now Gen 3 at $129.99 in a separate listing. Digital Camera World listed the Go Gen 3 at $89.99. These figures should be checked again before purchase, and the Flip’s current price should likewise be verified rather than inferred from another model.

More important than a small difference in camera price is the film system. A discounted Go is not necessarily cheaper to own if you prefer large prints, and a discounted I-2 is not a bargain if you will never use its manual controls. Compare the camera, the compatible film, the number of exposures per pack, and your likely shooting frequency together.

Feature, compatibility, dimensions, and care information in this guide is based primarily on current U.S. Polaroid product and support specifications. Comparative comments are attributed to TechRadar and Digital Camera World. The rankings are use-case recommendations, not the result of a controlled test or personal long-term ownership.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Polaroid camera is best for a beginner?

The Polaroid Flip is the best beginner choice if you want full-size photographs and the most focusing and exposure assistance. Choose the Now Gen 3 instead if you want a simpler camera and can do without the Flip’s sonar autofocus, four focus zones, and scene-analysis warning.

Is the Polaroid I-2 worth the higher price?

The I-2 is worth considering when you will actually use its manual aperture, shutter-speed, long-exposure, flash-synchronization, and metering features. It is not the best value for someone who mainly wants automatic point-and-shoot photography.

Can you use full-size Polaroid film in a Polaroid Go?

No. Polaroid Go film is smaller and works only in Go cameras. The Flip, I-2, Now+ Gen 3, and Now Gen 3 use the larger full-size Polaroid film system, with compatibility varying between i-Type, 600, and SX-70 film.

Do Polaroid cameras use Instax film?

No. Polaroid and Instax are separate film systems, and their film packs are not interchangeable. Choose the camera based on the film format and ecosystem you are prepared to keep buying.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you buy a vintage Polaroid camera instead?

A vintage 600 or SX-70 can be a good enthusiast or collectible purchase if its condition is verified or it has been refurbished. Avoid unsupported formats such as Spectra/Image and packfilm if you need a practical camera with readily supported film.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Get the Polaroid Flip for the best all-purpose full-size experience, the I-2 for serious manual control, the Now+ Gen 3 for app-based creativity, the Now Gen 3 for simple full-size shooting, and the Go Gen 3 only when compact size and smaller prints are the priority. Decide on the film format before you buy, because Go film is exclusive to Go cameras and standard full-size packs contain only eight exposures.
