There is an important version distinction. Blender 4.5 is the long-term-support branch; Blender 4.5.1 is one specific point release in that branch. As of the supplied research date, August 12, 2026, Blender 4.5.8 had already been announced, so 4.5.1 is no longer the newest 4.5 maintenance build. Use 4.5.1 when a project, plug-in, or studio pipeline specifically requires it—not simply because it is the newest Blender download.
What Blender 4.5.1 is for
Blender is a free, open-source 3D creation suite for modeling, sculpting, texture and material work, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing, motion tracking, video editing, Grease Pencil illustration, and procedural workflows such as Geometry Nodes. For painters and digital artists, it can function as a reference-building and image-making tool: you can construct a scene, light it, render a base image, and use the result for study or as part of a 2D/3D production workflow.
#1 Best Overall
- Advanced 3D navigation
- Wireless and USB-C connectivity
- Rechargeable battery lasting up to 1 month between charges
- 2 programmable side buttons
- Lightweight and durable carry case
Blender 4.5.1 concentrates on the less visible problems that interrupt those workflows. The release notes include fixes for:
- FBX tangent export when a mesh contains multiple UV layers;
- Library Overrides involving Hair Curves;
- unwanted geometry decimation caused by the Sculpting Surface Smooth tool;
- crashes involving Cryptomatte nodes and differently sized image sequences;
- Geometry Nodes input panels after an input name was deleted;
- manifold Boolean offsets involving planes;
- armature edit-bone locking and incomplete Armature EditBone RNA paths;
- adaptive subdivision behavior that could affect UVs;
- closed Grease Pencil curves when using Connected Proportional Editing;
- pose-library asset keyframing and related asset workflows; and
- other viewport, lighting-animation, asset-library, and production-file issues.
These are release-maintenance claims, not independent performance benchmarks. Blender 4.5.1 should therefore be understood as a correction and stability release rather than a version that is guaranteed to render faster on every computer.
The fixes that matter most to artists
FBX export with multiple UV layers
One of the most practical fixes addresses FBX export. Previously, a mesh with multiple UV layers could export only the last tangent layer. That can matter when moving models between Blender and game engines, DCC applications, or other tools that depend on correct tangent data for normal mapping and shading.
If your work stays entirely inside Blender, this may never affect you. If you exchange painted models, props, characters, or environments through FBX, it is worth testing a representative file after updating. Check the exported model in the target application, especially if it uses multiple UV sets or baked normal maps.
Sculpting Surface Smooth
The release fixes a Surface Smooth sculpting problem that could cause unwanted geometry decimation. That is significant for high-resolution sculpt data: a smoothing action should not unexpectedly reduce the underlying geometry and compromise detail or later editing.
This does not mean that every sculpting operation is lossless or that Blender 4.5.1 replaces a backup strategy. Save a copy of important sculpts before opening them in a new Blender version, and inspect areas where fine forms, pores, sharp folds, or dense displacement are important.
Cryptomatte and image sequences
Blender 4.5.1 includes a crash fix for Cryptomatte nodes used with differently sized image sequences. Cryptomatte is commonly used to isolate objects or materials for compositing. If your render-compositing setup combines image sequences with inconsistent dimensions, the update may prevent a particularly disruptive failure.

- 2-Year manufacturer's warranty
It is still better to standardize image-sequence dimensions and frame interpretation in the first place. A maintenance fix reduces the chance of a crash; it does not make mismatched source media a dependable compositing practice.
Geometry Nodes input panels
A Geometry Nodes input-panel crash could occur after an input name was deleted. This is especially relevant to procedural assets that expose many artist-facing controls. If you maintain node groups used by several files or collaborators, open and test those groups after updating, including groups with renamed or removed interface sockets.
Grease Pencil and asset workflows
Grease Pencil users will find fixes involving closed curves and Connected Proportional Editing. The release also addresses pose-library asset keyframing and related asset behavior. These changes are important for artists combining drawing, animation, reusable poses, and linked production data, even though they are not headline features.
Modeling, armatures, and subdivision
The maintenance work also covers manifold Boolean offsets with planes, armature edit-bone locking behavior, incomplete Armature EditBone RNA paths, and adaptive subdivision behavior affecting UVs. Those fixes target technical correctness rather than a redesigned modeling or rigging system, but correctness is often what determines whether a production file can be handed to another artist without repair.

Should you install Blender 4.5.1?
| Situation | Best approach |
|---|---|
| You are starting a long project and need a supported 4.5-series environment | Use the current 4.5 LTS maintenance release available from the official download page, after checking plug-in and pipeline compatibility. |
| A studio or client requires exactly Blender 4.5.1 | Install and preserve that exact build. Keep it separate from newer versions and do not overwrite the production installation casually. |
| You are already using 4.5.0 | Moving to a later compatible 4.5.x maintenance build is generally more sensible than remaining on the original point release, but test add-ons and files first. |
| You want the newest Blender features | 4.5.1 is not the right description of the current release. Check Blender’s download selector and release information before choosing a version. |
| An old add-on or tutorial requires 4.5.1 | Keep 4.5.1 available for that workflow, preferably as a separate installation, while using a newer supported build for other work. |
Blender’s 4.5 LTS branch was announced as receiving two years of support, which makes the branch attractive for longer projects that prioritize predictable maintenance over immediately adopting every new feature. However, “LTS” does not mean that every point release is equally current. Later 4.5.x releases can contain additional fixes.
How to install it safely
- Confirm the required version. If a project or plug-in says “Blender 4.5,” determine whether it means any 4.5.x build or exactly 4.5.1.
- Use the official download page. Blender provides operating-system-specific builds and may present stable, LTS, previous-version, Steam, source, or experimental options. The default download shown on the site can change, so verify the selected build before downloading.
- Back up production files. Save copies of important
.blendfiles, external textures, linked libraries, caches, and custom scripts. Do not rely on a version upgrade as your backup. - Test with a copy first. Open a duplicate of a representative project. Check modifiers, materials, simulations, linked assets, Geometry Nodes interfaces, render settings, and output paths.
- Review add-ons and preferences. Community add-ons may need their own compatibility updates. Export or copy preferences only after confirming that the add-on versions are appropriate.
- Keep parallel versions when necessary. Blender versions can coexist. A separate 4.5.1 installation is safer than replacing a working production build when exact compatibility matters.
The Blender 4.5 Manual’s installation documentation covers platform-specific setup and is the right place to check details that differ between Windows, macOS, and Linux. For the current download choice, use Blender’s official download page rather than an old third-party installer link.
What to test after updating
A short regression check can reveal whether the update is suitable for your particular files:

- Six-Degrees-of-Freedom (6DoF) sensor
- Rechargeable Li-poly battery with 1100 mAh
- Wireless and USB-C connectivity
- Bluetooth Low Energy
- Open a sculpt copy and inspect dense areas after using Surface Smooth.
- Export one multi-UV mesh to FBX and verify tangents, normal maps, and UV sets in the destination application.
- Open Geometry Nodes groups with renamed or deleted interface inputs.
- Load a compositing file containing Cryptomatte and image sequences.
- Test Grease Pencil curves using Connected Proportional Editing.
- Open linked assets and Library Overrides, including Hair Curves where applicable.
- Check armature editing, pose-library keyframes, adaptive subdivision, and Boolean results on files that depend on them.
- Render a small frame before committing to a long animation or simulation.
If a file behaves differently, first compare the same file in the previous Blender version. Then disable recently updated add-ons, check missing external data, and isolate the smallest scene that reproduces the problem. Keep the older installation until the new one has passed your project’s tests.

You do not need specialist hardware to use Blender. Keyboard-and-mouse workflows remain completely viable for modeling, navigation, materials, lighting, and rendering. A pressure-sensitive device becomes more useful when your work centers on sculpting, drawing, animation, or Grease Pencil.
A drawing tablet for Blender is an optional workflow upgrade rather than a requirement. Pen input can make brush pressure, sculpting strokes, and Grease Pencil drawing more natural. Wacom’s discussion of Blender workflows covers pen tablets and pen displays for drawing, animation, sculpting, and 2D work. Compare active-area size, pressure behavior, display versus screenless operation, shortcut controls, operating-system support, and desk ergonomics before buying; there is no universal “best” tablet for every artist.
For offline study, a Blender book or Blender 3D reference book can be useful when you prefer a structured explanation away from the screen. Choose an edition that clearly matches your Blender version or teaches transferable fundamentals. A book is a supplement, not a requirement, and version-specific interface labels can age quickly.
Free documentation is the safest starting point. The Blender 4.5 Manual covers the interface, modeling, sculpting, Grease Pencil, animation, rigging, physics, rendering, compositing, tracking, video editing, files, add-ons, Python, and troubleshooting. For learners who want a paid path, structured Blender training can provide projects, feedback, and a fixed sequence of lessons. CG Cookie’s current CORE V2 information describes an 11-course guided path, but it targets Blender 5.2 LTS rather than specifically Blender 4.5.1; check current compatibility before enrolling.

Commercial use and the Blender license
Blender is distributed under the GNU GPL. That applies to the Blender application and its distribution or modification; it does not automatically place the artwork you create in Blender under the GPL. In practical terms, artists can create and sell their own models, illustrations, animations, renders, and other work. The licensing obligations for redistributing or modifying Blender itself are a separate matter.

Check the license terms of any add-on, asset pack, brush, texture, model, or third-party service separately. “Made with Blender” does not make every component of a project interchangeable or commercially unrestricted.
Bottom line
Blender 4.5.1 is worth understanding as a reliability release, not as a feature milestone. Its 89 fixes address real failure points in FBX interchange, sculpting, compositing, Geometry Nodes, Grease Pencil, linked assets, armatures, booleans, and subdivision. If you need the exact build for compatibility, install it alongside other versions and test your files. If you simply want the current 4.5 LTS maintenance level, check for a later 4.5.x release—4.5.1 should not be presented as the latest Blender version.
