The right Apple Pencil depends on the exact iPad you own. Apple Pencil (USB-C) suits notes and everyday use when you do not need pressure sensitivity; Apple Pencil (2nd generation) adds pressure sensitivity and magnetic charging on compatible iPads; and Apple Pencil (1st generation) remains an option for older compatible iPads, as well as iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16) with an adapter. Check Apple’s compatibility list before buying.

Apple Pencil USB-C vs. Apple Pencil 2 vs. Apple Pencil 1: the short answer

Choose by iPad compatibility first, then by features. Apple Pencil (USB-C) is a practical choice for notes, PDFs, schoolwork, journaling, diagrams, and general sketching on compatible iPads if pressure sensitivity is not essential. Apple Pencil (2nd generation) adds pressure sensitivity, double-tap controls, and magnetic pairing and charging. Apple Pencil (1st generation) works with many older iPads and with iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16) when paired and charged using the required adapter.

  • Choose Apple Pencil (USB-C) for compatible iPads when you mainly write, annotate, or sketch and do not need pressure sensitivity.
  • Choose Apple Pencil (2nd generation) for a compatible iPad Air 4 or 5, iPad mini 6, or supported older iPad Pro when pressure sensitivity and magnetic charging matter.
  • Choose Apple Pencil (1st generation) for compatible older iPads, or for iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16) if you have the required USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter.

Do not assume that an iPad with a USB-C port supports Apple Pencil 2. Compatibility depends on the specific iPad model, not just its charging port.

Compatibility: identify your iPad before buying

To check the exact model, open Settings > General > About and note the model name and generation. “iPad Air” or “iPad Pro” is not specific enough: generations within the same family can support different Pencil models. Apple’s compatibility list is the deciding reference and may change as products are released.

Apple Pencil (USB-C) compatibility

Apple lists the USB-C Pencil for a range of iPads, including:

  • iPad Pro models in specified 11-inch and 12.9-inch generations, as well as supported M-series models through M5
  • iPad Air 4th and 5th generation and supported 11-inch and 13-inch M2, M3, and M4 models
  • iPad 10th generation and iPad (A16)
  • iPad mini 6th generation and iPad mini (A17 Pro)

The USB-C Pencil requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later. Check Apple’s current compatibility guide for the complete list and your exact model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Pencil (2nd generation) compatibility

Apple lists Apple Pencil 2 for:

  • iPad Pro 11-inch, 1st through 4th generation
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch, 3rd through 6th generation
  • iPad Air 4th and 5th generation
  • iPad mini 6th generation

Apple Pencil 2 is not listed for newer M-series iPad Air models, current M4/M5 iPad Pro models, iPad (10th generation), iPad (A16), or iPad mini (A17 Pro). Check Apple’s list rather than inferring compatibility from a magnetic edge or USB-C port.

Apple Pencil (1st generation) compatibility

Apple lists Apple Pencil 1 for:

  • iPad 6th through 10th generation and iPad (A16)
  • iPad Air 3rd generation
  • iPad mini 5th generation
  • iPad Pro 9.7-inch and 10.5-inch
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch, 1st and 2nd generation

For iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16), Apple requires the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter for pairing and charging.

The iPad 10th-generation and A16 adapter trap

iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16) can use either Apple Pencil (USB-C) or Apple Pencil 1, but their connection methods differ.

With the USB-C model, connect the Pencil to the iPad using a USB-C cable for pairing and charging. With Apple Pencil 1, the Lightning connector cannot plug directly into the iPad. Apple lists the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter as required to pair and charge it with these iPads.

Charging and storage: USB cable versus magnetic charging

Apple Pencil (USB-C)

The USB-C model has a retractable end that reveals a USB-C connector. It pairs and charges through a USB-C cable. Its magnetic attachment is for storage; it does not charge while attached.

Apple Pencil 2

Pencil 2 attaches to the side of a compatible iPad. The magnetic connection handles storage, pairing, and charging. This is convenient when your iPad supports the required magnetic charging hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Pencil 1

Pencil 1 pairs and charges through Lightning. With iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16), Apple requires the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter for pairing and charging.

Which Apple Pencil is best for drawing?

For pressure-sensitive drawing, choose Apple Pencil 1 or Apple Pencil 2, assuming your iPad supports it. Pressure sensitivity lets compatible apps respond to how firmly you press, for example by varying line weight or shading.

Apple Pencil 2 is a feature-rich drawing option on compatible iPads because it combines pressure sensitivity with tilt sensitivity, double-tap tool switching, and magnetic pairing and charging. Apple described hover support for Pencil 2 on M2 iPad Pro models; check device compatibility before relying on that feature.

Apple Pencil (USB-C) offers pixel-level precision, low latency, tilt sensitivity, and hover on specified supported iPads. Apple’s cited comparison does not list pressure sensitivity for it. If pressure-based line variation is part of your technique, choose a pressure-sensitive model compatible with your iPad.

Which is best for notes, PDFs, and schoolwork?

For handwriting, journaling, PDF markup, signatures, basic diagrams, and ordinary note-taking, Apple Pencil (USB-C) is a sensible choice on a compatible iPad if you do not need pressure sensitivity. It supports precision, low latency, tilt, and palm rejection.

Consider Apple Pencil 2 if your iPad supports it and you want:

  • magnetic pairing and charging;
  • double-tap tool switching; or
  • pressure sensitivity for drawing or writing workflows.

For older iPads, Apple Pencil 1 may be the compatible choice among these three.

Supported M-series iPad Air or iPad Pro, or iPad mini (A17 Pro) Apple Pencil (USB-C) Among these three, USB-C is listed for these newer model families; confirm the exact model with Apple.

For models with overlapping support, verify the exact generation before ordering. A newer chip or display size does not automatically preserve compatibility with an older Pencil.

Size and handling

Apple Pencil (USB-C) 155 mm 8.9 mm 20.5 g
Apple Pencil (2nd generation) 166 mm 8.9 mm 18.2 g
Apple Pencil (1st generation) 175.7 mm 8.9 mm 20.7 g

The differences are modest in the hand. Pencil 2 is the lightest, Pencil 1 is the longest and heaviest, and the USB-C model is the shortest. Grip preference and charging behavior may matter more than these measurements.

Price, accessories, and long-term value

Apple’s October 2023 U.S. launch announcement listed Apple Pencil (USB-C) at $79, Pencil 2 at $129, and Pencil 1 with the USB-C adapter at $99; the adapter was $9 for existing owners. These are historical launch prices. Current retail prices and availability were not established in the research, so check live listings before purchasing.

Consider more than the sticker price:

  • USB-C Pencil: cable charging, even when magnetically stored.

  • Pencil 1: compatible with many older iPads; the adapter is required for iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16).

Final buying checklist

  1. Open Settings > General > About and identify the exact iPad model.
  2. Check Apple’s compatibility guide and rule out Pencil models that are not listed for your iPad.
  3. If USB-C and Pencil 2 are both compatible, decide whether pressure sensitivity and magnetic charging matter to you.
  4. If you have iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16) and choose Pencil 1, get the required USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter.
  5. If you draw with pressure-sensitive brushes, choose a compatible pressure-sensitive model.
  6. Check current prices, stock, seller, and return terms before ordering.

Bottom line: Apple Pencil (USB-C) is a practical option for compatible iPads and everyday writing when pressure sensitivity is not needed. Pencil 2 adds pressure sensitivity and magnetic charging on supported iPads. Pencil 1 remains compatible with many older iPads and works with iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16) when used with the required adapter.
