Yes—but there are three different ways to do it. You can draw directly on the iPad with Apple Pencil, use Apple’s Sidecar feature to draw in Mac software, or install third-party software such as Astropad Studio or Duet Display for a Mac or Windows PC. Luna Display provides another cross-platform route, but it requires a physical hardware unit.

Choose the workflow based on where the artwork must run. Native iPad drawing is the simplest; Sidecar is the natural Mac option; Windows users need a third-party solution. Before choosing any of them, identify the iPad model and confirm the Apple Pencil match.

  1. Draw directly on the iPad: Use Apple Pencil in an iPad-native app such as Procreate or Adobe Fresco. This needs no Mac or PC and usually has the fewest connection variables.
  2. Use Sidecar with a Mac: Extend or mirror the Mac desktop onto the iPad, then use Apple Pencil to draw in a Mac application. Sidecar is built into macOS, but it is not a Windows feature.
  3. Use third-party software with a Mac or Windows PC: Astropad Studio, Duet Display, and Luna Display can provide some combination of desktop-app control, second-display functionality, mirroring, touch, and Apple Pencil input. Their requirements and pricing differ.

The most important purchasing step comes before choosing an app: identify the exact iPad model and select a compatible Apple Pencil. Apple Pencil compatibility is model-specific, and not every iPad works with Apple Pencil Pro.

What you want to do Best starting point Computer needed Main trade-off
Finish artwork entirely on the tablet Procreate or Adobe Fresco None The workflow is limited to the iPad app rather than a desktop application.
Draw in Mac software using an Apple-supported feature Sidecar Compatible Mac It works only with supported Mac and iPad combinations.
Use desktop creative software on Mac or Windows Astropad Studio Mac or Windows PC Subscription software and a connection that must be configured correctly.
Extend, mirror, or use an iPad across several platforms Duet Display Mac, Windows, or other supported device combinations Features and input behavior depend on the device, operating system, and app.
Use a hardware-assisted cross-platform display connection Luna Display Mac or Windows PC A physical Luna hardware unit is required.

First: check the iPad and Apple Pencil combination

For drawing, the Pencil is usually more important than the app. Before buying, check Apple Pencil compatibility against the exact iPad model and generation. On the iPad, open Settings > General > About and note the model name. Then compare it with Apple’s official Apple Pencil compatibility table.

Apple’s listed compatibility for Apple Pencil Pro includes iPad Pro 11-inch and 13-inch models using M4 or M5, iPad Air 11-inch and 13-inch models using M2, M3, or M4, and iPad mini with A17 Pro, with iPadOS 17.5 or later. That is not a general compatibility statement for every recent iPad.

Apple Pencil USB-C covers a different group of recent and older iPad models. Apple Pencil 2nd generation and Apple Pencil 1st generation each have their own compatibility lists. If the iPad is older, or if it uses a particular connector, do not infer compatibility from the Pencil’s name or from the iPad’s screen size.

Compatibility checklist

  • Identify the exact iPad model and generation.
  • Check whether that iPad supports Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil USB-C, Apple Pencil 2nd generation, or Apple Pencil 1st generation.
  • Confirm the iPadOS version required by the Pencil and app.
  • Check how the Pencil pairs and charges with that iPad.
  • Test pressure, tilt, palm rejection, and any model-specific gestures inside the actual drawing app.

Apple Pencil behavior is also app-dependent. A Pencil may pair successfully while a particular brush, desktop application, or third-party connection utility exposes only basic pointer input. For professional work, test the complete iPad, Pencil, connection method, and target application together.

Option 1: draw directly on the iPad

Choose native iPad drawing when the artwork can be created and finished on the iPad, or when you want the simplest setup. There is no desktop streaming, display mapping, Wi-Fi dependency, or companion driver to troubleshoot.

Procreate

Procreate is a strong choice for direct iPad painting. Its documentation describes Apple Pencil pressure and tilt support. With Apple Pencil Pro, Procreate also documents barrel-roll behavior for brush rotation. The exact result still depends on the selected brush and the Pencil model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Procreate is an iPad drawing application, not a way to mirror or control a Mac or Windows application. Choose it when the iPad itself is the place where you want to paint, organize layers, and export the finished work.

Adobe Fresco

Adobe Fresco is another native iPad drawing option, particularly suitable for readers already working in Adobe’s ecosystem. Adobe describes Fresco as a free iPad drawing app compatible with Apple Pencil. Its requirements identify Apple Pencil, Apple Pencil 2nd generation, and Apple Pencil Pro as supported styluses for applicable iPad configurations.

Fresco’s availability and feature set can change, so verify the current app requirements for the specific iPad before relying on it. It is still a native iPad app: installing Fresco does not turn the iPad into a pressure-sensitive surface for a separate Windows or Mac application.

Native iPad setup

  1. Find the iPad model under Settings > General > About.
  2. Select an Apple Pencil model that Apple lists as compatible with that iPad.
  3. Pair and charge the Pencil according to Apple’s instructions for that model.
  4. Install Procreate, Fresco, or another iPad-native drawing app.
  5. Create a test canvas and check a pressure-sensitive brush, a tilted stroke, palm rejection, and any Pencil-specific gesture.
  6. Export a small test file in the format your wider workflow needs before starting a large painting.

This route is normally the best answer if the question is simply, “Can I draw on an iPad?” You need a compatible Pencil and drawing app, but you do not need a Mac or PC at all.

Option 2: use Sidecar to draw in Mac software

Sidecar is Apple’s built-in way to use an iPad as a second display for a Mac. It can either extend the Mac desktop, giving the iPad its own workspace, or mirror the Mac display. Apple specifically documents Apple Pencil input as a way to draw in Mac applications through Sidecar.

Sidecar is the cleanest choice when the main computer is a Mac, the Mac software is essential, and both devices meet Apple’s Continuity requirements. It is not Apple’s general-purpose iPad-to-Windows drawing-tablet solution.

Sidecar compatibility

Apple’s Continuity requirements list iPadOS 13 or later and macOS Catalina 10.15 or later for Sidecar. The listed iPad families include:

  • All iPad Pro models
  • iPad 6th generation or later
  • iPad mini 5th generation or later
  • iPad Air 3rd generation or later

The listed Mac support includes MacBook Air models introduced in 2018 or later, the 27-inch Retina 5K iMac from Late 2015, and other Mac models introduced in 2016 or later. The exact model still matters, so check Apple’s current Sidecar compatibility list rather than relying only on the operating-system versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sidecar setup

  1. Sign in to the same Apple Account on the Mac and iPad.
  2. Make sure Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff are turned on as required by Apple’s Continuity setup.
  3. On a recent macOS version, open System Settings > Displays and use Add Display to select the iPad. Depending on the macOS version, the iPad may also appear through the Mac’s Control Center > Screen Mirroring control.
  4. Choose whether the iPad should extend or mirror the Mac screen.
  5. Open the target Mac drawing application and use Apple Pencil on the iPad surface.
  6. If wireless Sidecar is unreliable, test the USB connection option documented by Apple, provided the Mac and iPad are compatible and the cable supports the connection.

In an extended-display setup, move the Mac application window onto the iPad and use the Pencil there. In a mirrored setup, the iPad shows the same desktop view as the Mac. The Mac application remains a Mac application: its files, plug-ins, menus, and rendering behavior are still governed by the Mac.

When Sidecar is the wrong choice

  • You use Windows as the primary computer.
  • Your Mac or iPad is outside Apple’s supported model list.
  • You want a dedicated cross-platform drawing-tablet utility with pressure-curve controls or configurable shortcut sets.
  • You want to draw entirely on the iPad without keeping a Mac application open.

Option 3: use third-party software with a Mac or Windows PC

Third-party solutions are the main route for Windows users and can also add controls or hardware options that Sidecar does not provide. They are not interchangeable, however. Some are primarily drawing-tablet utilities, some are software-based second displays, and Luna Display requires a physical adapter.

Astropad Studio: drawing-tablet controls for Mac and Windows

Astropad Studio is the closest fit when the goal is to use an iPad as a pressure-sensitive drawing surface for desktop creative software on either Mac or Windows. Its listed features include Apple Pencil optimization, USB or Wi-Fi connectivity, pressure-curve controls, and customizable shortcuts.

The U.S. App Store listing describes monthly and annual subscription options. Prices, plans, supported operating systems, and availability can change by region and over time. The researched listing states desktop requirements of macOS 10.13 or later or Windows 10 64-bit, build 1809 or later, with iPadOS 13.1 or later on the iPad. Recheck the current requirements before installing or subscribing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Astropad Studio is a good candidate for a Windows artist who needs to work inside desktop software and wants more drawing-specific controls than a basic screen-mirroring tool provides. It is less attractive if you want to avoid subscriptions or if the artwork can be completed comfortably in a native iPad app.

Astropad Studio setup

  1. Confirm the Windows or macOS version, iPadOS version, and exact hardware requirements.
  2. Install the Astropad desktop companion and the iPad application.
  3. Connect over a suitable Wi-Fi network or USB, depending on the supported connection options and your setup.
  4. Open the desktop drawing application you want to control.
  5. Set or test the pressure curve, shortcut buttons, cursor alignment, and Pencil behavior.
  6. Make several strokes at different pressures and angles before using the system for a finished painting.

Duet Display: software-based second display and cross-platform use

Duet Display is a software-centered option for extending or mirroring a display and using an iPad as a drawing tablet. Its official product descriptions cover second-monitor extension, mirroring, remote desktop, and device workflows involving Mac, PC, iOS, and Android.

Duet is worth considering if your setup is cross-platform or if you want the iPad to serve more than one purpose. It may be a better fit than a drawing-only tool when second-display and remote-access functions are also important. Do not assume that it will behave identically on every supported device combination; test Pencil input and the target application on the exact operating systems you use.

Duet Display setup

  1. Check the current Duet requirements for the host computer and iPad.
  2. Install the host software on the Mac or PC and the companion app on the iPad.
  3. Connect using a supported Wi-Fi or USB method.
  4. Select extension, mirroring, or the relevant drawing-tablet mode.
  5. Open the creative application and test input mapping, pressure, tilt, and latency.

Luna Display: hardware-assisted Mac and PC connection

Luna Display combines a physical USB-C or HDMI adapter with companion applications. It supports iPad second-display use with Mac and PC systems, including touch and Apple Pencil input. A Luna hardware unit is required for all connections, so this is not a software-only alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Astropad lists a USB-C version intended for modern Macs and PCs and an HDMI version intended for older PC models. Its support documentation lists primary Mac support from 2011 onward with macOS 10.13 or later, plus Windows 10 64-bit support. Hardware compatibility varies, and the manufacturer recommends checking the requirements for the specific computer before purchase.

Mac versus Windows: which route should you use?

Platform Recommended order of consideration Why
Mac with a compatible iPad Native iPad app, then Sidecar, then third-party software Sidecar is built in and can put Apple Pencil input into Mac applications without buying a separate adapter.
Mac outside Sidecar compatibility Native app, Astropad Studio, Duet Display, or Luna Display A third-party option may support an older or otherwise unsupported setup, subject to its own requirements.
Windows PC Astropad Studio, Duet Display, or Luna Display Sidecar is not a Windows feature. Windows requires a third-party software route or Luna’s hardware-assisted route.
No computer required Procreate, Fresco, or another native iPad app The iPad handles the artwork directly and avoids desktop connectivity altogether.

If the application itself must run on Windows, start with Astropad Studio, Duet Display, or Luna Display rather than trying generic screen-casting software. If the application runs on a compatible Mac, test Sidecar first. If the artwork can be finished on the iPad, native drawing is usually the least complicated path.

Mirroring is not automatically the same as a drawing tablet

Mirroring means displaying the computer’s screen on the iPad. A drawing-tablet workflow also requires the host computer to receive stylus or touch input in a useful way and pass pressure or other Pencil data to the creative application where supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A generic casting app may show the desktop while failing to provide pressure-sensitive strokes, correct cursor mapping, palm rejection, or a usable drawing surface. Astropad Studio, Duet Display, and Luna Display explicitly market drawing-tablet or Apple Pencil capabilities, but their supported features should still be checked for the exact computer and application.

Do not judge a setup solely by whether the desktop appears on the iPad. Draw a test line, vary pressure, tilt the Pencil, move the cursor to all four corners, and verify that the application responds as expected.

Buying decision: use this compatibility-first checklist

  1. Start with the iPad. Record its exact model, generation, connector, and current iPadOS version.
  2. Select the Pencil. Confirm whether Apple Pencil Pro, USB-C, 2nd generation, or 1st generation is supported. Do not buy a model based only on the words “iPad Pro” or “iPad Air.”
  3. Decide where the artwork will run. Choose a native iPad app if the iPad is sufficient; choose Sidecar or third-party software if a desktop application is required.
  4. Identify the host platform. Mac users can investigate Sidecar first. Windows users need Astropad Studio, Duet Display, Luna Display, or another specifically verified solution.
  5. Choose the connection. Check whether the product supports USB, Wi-Fi, or both. For a wireless setup, use a suitable network and reduce competing network activity while testing. If USB is supported, compare it with wireless on your actual computer rather than assuming one method is universally better.
  6. Price the complete setup. Include the Pencil, app or subscription costs, any Luna hardware, and a suitable cable if the chosen workflow needs one.
  7. Test before committing. Check pressure, tilt, palm rejection, cursor alignment, shortcuts, latency, display scaling, and the file workflow in the application you actually use.

Troubleshooting

The iPad does not appear in Sidecar

  • Confirm that the Mac and iPad are signed in to the same Apple Account.
  • Turn on Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff on the required devices.
  • Check the Mac and iPad model lists, not just the macOS and iPadOS versions.
  • Install the latest operating-system updates that the hardware supports, then restart both devices.
  • Try the USB connection option documented by Apple if wireless Sidecar does not connect.
  • Use the current macOS display controls: System Settings > Displays > Add Display, or the version-specific screen-mirroring control.

An unsupported Mac or iPad cannot normally be made Sidecar-compatible by changing a display setting. Use a supported third-party solution or draw natively on the iPad instead.

The iPad connects, but pressure or tilt does not work

  • Verify that the Pencil is the correct model for the iPad and is charged.
  • Test a pressure-sensitive brush rather than a brush that deliberately ignores pressure.
  • Check the drawing app’s brush and stylus settings.
  • For desktop work, confirm that the host companion app and the desktop creative application both support the input being passed through.
  • Test native iPad drawing separately. If pressure works in Procreate or Fresco but not on the desktop, the problem is likely in the connection or host-application path rather than Pencil pairing.

The desktop appears, but the cursor is misaligned

Check display scaling, resolution, rotation, and which monitor the host application believes is active. Re-select the iPad as the active display in the companion software, then test the edges and corners of the canvas. A mirrored display and an extended display can produce different mapping behavior, so test both only if the application supports the intended mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The connection is laggy or disconnects

  • Switch between supported Wi-Fi and USB connections.
  • Move the devices closer to the network access point when using wireless.
  • Reduce competing network activity while testing.
  • Use a known-good data-capable cable when the product supports USB.
  • Close unnecessary host applications and confirm that the computer meets the software’s requirements.
  • Check the companion app’s permissions and any operating-system security prompts.

There is no universal latency ranking established here. Manufacturer feature lists confirm supported connection methods, not identical real-world performance on every network, computer, display, and application. Test the actual setup before using it for time-sensitive or professional work.

A Windows PC cannot use Sidecar

That is expected: Sidecar is an Apple-to-Mac feature. Use Astropad Studio or Duet Display for a software-based route, or consider Luna Display if a physical hardware component suits the computer and budget. Verify Windows version, 64-bit requirements, ports, iPadOS support, and Apple Pencil behavior before purchase.

Bottom line

For the simplest painting setup, use a compatible Apple Pencil with Procreate or Adobe Fresco directly on the iPad. For a compatible Mac and Mac-based creative software, try Sidecar first. For Windows, or for more drawing-tablet controls and cross-platform features, compare Astropad Studio, Duet Display, and Luna Display. The right choice is determined less by the iPad’s screen size than by its exact Pencil compatibility, the computer platform, the application that must run, and whether you want software-only or hardware-assisted connectivity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an iPad as a drawing tablet without a computer?

Yes. If the artwork can be created on the iPad, pair a compatible Apple Pencil and use an app such as Procreate or Adobe Fresco. A Mac or Windows PC is not required for native iPad drawing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use an iPad as a drawing tablet with Windows?

Yes, but not with Apple’s Sidecar feature. Sidecar connects an iPad to a Mac. Windows users generally need a third-party option such as Astropad Studio or Duet Display, or a hardware-assisted solution such as Luna Display.

Is screen mirroring the same as using an iPad as a drawing tablet?

No. Mirroring only displays the computer’s screen. A proper drawing-tablet workflow must also pass stylus or touch input to the host application, ideally including pressure and tilt where supported. Generic screen-casting tools should not be assumed to provide that.

Which Apple Pencil works with my iPad?

It depends on the iPad model. Apple Pencil Pro is listed for specific M4/M5 iPad Pro models, M2/M3/M4 iPad Air models, and the iPad mini with A17 Pro, with iPadOS 17.5 or later. The Bottom Line

Best short answer: draw natively with Procreate or Fresco if the iPad can finish the work; use Sidecar for a compatible Mac; use Astropad Studio, Duet Display, or Luna Display for Windows and other cross-platform desktop workflows. Confirm the exact Apple Pencil and iPad match before buying anything.
