Adobe’s Magic Fixup is an Adobe-affiliated research prototype, not a confirmed Photoshop feature. It takes an original image and a rough spatial edit—such as moving, resizing, duplicating, or deleting an object—and generates a refined result that attempts to repair lighting, reflections, depth of field, seams, and object interactions.
The project has a public research page, paper, code repository, and downloadable checkpoint. It does not, based on the available evidence, have a normal Creative Cloud installation path or a current Photoshop menu item.
Adobe’s Magic Fixup is real, impressive research—but it is not currently a standard Photoshop feature. The Adobe-affiliated project takes an original image and a rough spatial edit, then generates a more coherent result. Move, resize, duplicate, delete, or roughly reposition part of a scene, and the model attempts to repair the consequences that ordinary cut-and-paste leaves behind: lighting, reflections, depth of field, contact with nearby objects, and the visual seams between composited elements.

That makes the project important for photographers, painters, concept artists, and image-makers. But the wording matters: Adobe’s researchers have published a project page, paper, public code, and downloadable checkpoint. The available evidence does not show Magic Fixup as a Creative Cloud release, a Photoshop menu item, or a generally available Adobe product.

What Magic Fixup actually does
Traditional compositing can move a person, object, or section of a picture into a new position, but the pasted element usually carries evidence of its original context. Its shadow may point the wrong way. The color temperature may no longer match. Reflections may remain tied to the old position. Edges may look cut out, and the object may appear to sit in front of—or behind—the wrong neighboring elements.
Magic Fixup is designed to address that second stage. The user supplies two related images:
- an original or reference image containing the scene and its visual details; and
- a coarse edited image showing the desired new arrangement.
The coarse edit can be made with simple spatial operations. Project demonstrations include selecting scene segments, moving or resizing them, duplicating them, deleting them, and applying other rough transformations. Magic Fixup then generates a refined image that follows the new layout while attempting to make the result look as though the scene had been photographed or constructed that way in the first place.
This is more ambitious than removing an unwanted object or filling a rectangular selection. The system is trying to infer what should happen to the rest of the image after the edit. If an object moves closer to a light source, the illumination may need to change. If it is placed beside another object, the contact area and occlusion may need repair. If the composition changes its apparent focal distance, background blur and other depth-of-field cues may need to be reconsidered.
Why the demonstrations look different from ordinary copy and paste
The appeal of Magic Fixup is the relationship between layout and appearance. A conventional editor treats a moved object largely as a piece of pixels. Magic Fixup treats the rough composite as an instruction about where the scene should be, then synthesizes a result around that instruction.
In the research examples, this produces several kinds of edit:

The project also shows experiments beyond conventional photographs. That suggests the approach can be useful for some illustrated, stylized, or otherwise nonstandard imagery, but it should not be read as a guarantee that every painting, drawing, or unusual image will retain its structure and identity.

The key research idea: use video to teach still-image editing
Magic Fixup’s most interesting contribution is not simply that it uses diffusion. Its training strategy uses video as a source of supervision for spatial image editing.

For each training video, the researchers select a reference frame and a target frame from different points in time. The two frames show related content, but objects, viewpoints, lighting, and relationships within the scene may have changed. The reference frame is then warped toward the target using two forms of motion modeling:
- Flow-based warping, which models more detailed or flexible motion across the image; and
- Coarse affine transformations, which describe simpler changes such as translation, scaling, rotation, and related geometric adjustments.
The warped reference becomes a synthetic version of a rough edit. The true target frame supplies the reconstruction target. During training, the model learns to turn an imperfectly transformed image into the actual later frame.
In plain language, the video provides naturally related before-and-after observations. Instead of relying only on manually created still-image edit pairs, the system can learn from how a scene’s appearance changes as objects move, the camera shifts, viewpoints change, and lighting or physical interactions vary.

It also says the implementation begins with Stable Diffusion 1.4, modified architecturally to accept the model’s required inputs. That makes Magic Fixup a research system built on a familiar diffusion foundation, not a mysterious new Photoshop filter operating inside the consumer application.
Why video is useful even though Magic Fixup makes images
A still-image dataset can teach a model how objects and scenes look. Video adds repeated observations of related content. Across frames, the model can encounter changing viewpoints, camera motion, object movement, lighting variation, and physical contact between scene elements.
Magic Fixup turns those observations into an editing lesson: a transformed version of one frame is treated as the imperfect input, while another frame from the same video supplies the desired outcome. The research hypothesis is that this helps the model learn how visual consequences follow spatial changes.
This does not mean Magic Fixup is a video-editing or image-to-video tool. The project’s demonstrated task is still-image refinement. Video is used as training supervision; it does not by itself promise temporally consistent animation, a video output workflow, or perfect understanding of every physical scene.

How it compares with other AI editing approaches
The project page compares Magic Fixup with text-driven methods such as InstructPix2Pix and MasaCtrl, and with dragging or motion-guidance approaches including DragDiffusion and Motion Guidance.
Those systems solve related but different interaction problems. Text prompts are convenient for semantic changes, but describing an exact arrangement—where each object should go, how large it should be, and how the pieces should relate—can be less direct than showing a rough composition. Dragging-based methods provide spatial control, but the research authors argue that Magic Fixup can produce more successful results for some complex reposing scenarios.

Magic Fixup’s most important limitation: the inserted object may change

The research authors note that inserted objects may not retain their original identity accurately. Rather than preserving an object exactly, the model can stylize or reinterpret it toward the appearance of the surrounding image.
That matters for faces, products, people, branded objects, artwork, historical material, and any image where fidelity is more important than plausibility. A result can look convincing at a glance while quietly changing the subject’s features, markings, proportions, texture, or other identifying details.
The published examples demonstrate photorealistic editing in selected cases, but they do not establish reliable behavior for every face, hand, item of text, small object, unusual composition, or legally sensitive manipulation. Magic Fixup should therefore be treated as a generative reconstruction tool, not as a pixel-perfect relocation system.
What the research supports—and what it does not

Is Magic Fixup available in Photoshop?

For professional work, retain the source image, the rough edit, the generated output, and any meaningful prompt or configuration information. That makes it easier to identify what changed and to correct or repaint details that the model misunderstood.
The larger implication
Magic Fixup’s broader contribution is the idea that video can provide useful supervision for spatially aware image editing. A sequence of frames naturally contains related views and changing relationships that are difficult to obtain from isolated still images. By warping one frame and asking the model to recover another, the researchers create training examples that resemble the difference between a rough edit and a coherent final scene.
That does not make the system infallible, and it does not prove that every future image editor will be trained this way. It does show a promising direction: an editor could communicate intent through direct manipulation rather than relying only on a text prompt, while a generative model handles some of the lighting, depth, and interaction work that makes compositing difficult.
So the accurate headline is narrower than the original one suggests. Adobe researchers have released Magic Fixup as a compelling image-editing research prototype with public code and a checkpoint.
