Yes—try Midjourney V7, but select it deliberately. V8.1 became Midjourney’s default model on June 10, 2026; V7 is now a selectable alternative with strong prompt handling, textures, coherence, Draft Mode, and Omni Reference. Here is how to test it, give useful feedback, and present the results safely.
First, the important version note
Midjourney V7 is still available to try, but it is not the current default. Midjourney says V8.1 became the default model on June 10, 2026. V7 remains a selectable model and is worth testing when you want its particular balance of prompt interpretation, texture, and image coherence.
V7 is especially useful for prompts that require several elements to work together: a person holding a specific object, a vehicle in a defined setting, a character with a repeatable appearance, or a scene with deliberate composition and lighting. It also introduced Draft Mode for fast ideation and Omni Reference for bringing a character, object, vehicle, or creature from one reference image into a new creation.

This guide shows how to generate with V7, compare it fairly with other versions, test its reference and speed features, give feedback through Midjourney’s official Tasks, and publish a small, intentional collection rather than a noisy feed of unfinished images.
What Midjourney V7 does well
- More precise prompt handling: V7 is designed to follow detailed descriptions of subjects, settings, composition, and visual direction more accurately.
- Improved coherence: Bodies, hands, objects, and relationships between elements generally receive more attention than in older generations. This is an advantage to test, not a guarantee that every generation will be anatomically correct.
- Richer textures: Materials such as fabric, skin, stone, metal, paper, and painted surfaces can be described with more useful specificity.
- Draft Mode: A rapid concept-generation mode intended for exploring ideas and compositions before spending more time on final images.
- Omni Reference: A V7 reference feature for carrying a recognizable subject into a new scene from a single image.
Do not treat those strengths as a promise of perfect character consistency or reliable text rendering in every image. The useful question is whether V7 gives you a better starting point for your prompt than V8.1 or another available model.
How to select V7
On the Midjourney website
- Open the Create page.
- Enter your description in the Imagine bar.
- Open the model selector and choose V7. Do not assume that the current default is V7.
- Choose an aspect ratio and adjust the available aesthetic settings.
- Select a GPU speed, then generate the batch.
You can also look in the website settings for the default Midjourney version and select V7 where it is available. The exact controls shown can depend on the current website interface and account access.
In Discord
Use /settings and select V7, or specify the model directly in an Imagine prompt:

Adding the version explicitly is the safest way to make a comparison reproducible.
A practical V7 workflow
- Choose one test objective. Decide whether you are testing anatomy, object structure, prompt adherence, a recurring subject, or a particular visual style.
- Select V7 explicitly. Record the model, aspect ratio, quality setting, and any reference parameters.
- Write a concrete prompt. Include the subject, action, environment, camera or viewpoint, composition, lighting, surface qualities, and intended format.
- Generate a batch. Compare all results rather than judging only the first thumbnail.
- Inspect the weak points. Check hands and bodies, repeated objects, text, perspective, shadows, and whether the most important prompt details survived.
- Refine the strongest image. Use variations, upscaling, or a revised prompt. Change one important variable at a time when you are trying to learn what helped.
- Use a reference when continuity matters. Test Omni Reference with one image of the character, object, vehicle, or creature.
- Organize before publishing. Download the final image, copy its prompt and job details, place it in a folder, or add it to Spotlight after checking privacy and rights.
Prompting V7 with more control
A useful prompt is not necessarily long. It gives Midjourney an ordered set of decisions:
[subject and action], [environment], [composition and viewpoint], [lighting], [materials or texture], [mood or medium] --ar [ratio] --v 7For example:

- Wrong layout: state the viewpoint, subject placement, and aspect ratio more clearly.
- Missing object: put the object and its relationship to the subject earlier in the prompt.
- Weak material detail: name the material and the way light interacts with it.
- Unstable anatomy: simplify the action and composition before adding more style instructions.
- Inconsistent recurring subject: use Omni Reference, then adjust its weight rather than expecting the text prompt alone to preserve identity.
Three V7 features worth testing
1. Draft Mode for rapid ideas
Midjourney describes Draft Mode as approximately ten times faster than normal image generation. Its role is rapid exploration: test a composition, pose, scene, or visual direction quickly, then use a stronger workflow for the image you intend to keep.

Draft Mode is not a universal replacement for final generation. Treat its output as a sketching stage. Generate several rough directions, select the most promising composition, and rebuild or refine it at normal quality when detail and finish matter.
Important: Omni Reference cannot be combined with Draft Mode. If the test depends on a recurring character or object, use regular V7 generation instead.
2. Omni Reference for a recurring subject
Omni Reference can place the subject from one reference image into a new V7 creation. It supports a character, object, vehicle, or non-human creature and can be used alongside Personalization, Moodboards, stylization, and Style References.
In the website workflow, load the reference through the reference controls, then describe the new scene in the prompt. In a parameter-based workflow, Midjourney documents an Omni Reference weight parameter, with a default of --ow 100 and a supported range from 1 to 1,000.
Start near the default. Midjourney recommends generally keeping the weight below 400 unless you are using very high stylization; higher values can make results unpredictable. A high weight is not a guarantee of exact preservation, and a low weight may allow the subject to drift. Compare several generations and change only the weight or the scene description when testing.
Omni Reference has meaningful trade-offs:
- It uses twice the GPU time of a regular V7 image.
- It is not compatible with Fast Mode, Draft Mode, Conversational Mode, or
--q 4. - Its results are not currently compatible with Vary Region, Pan, or Zoom Out.
- If you need those editing operations, remove the reference and related parameters, then load the image into the Midjourney Editor.
3. Quality settings
V7 uses quality 1 by default. You can set quality to 2 or 4, using approximately two or four times as much GPU time as quality 1. Quality affects the initial batch of four images; it does not affect later variations, inpainting or outpainting, or upscales.

V7 does not have a --q 3 setting. Midjourney says that value automatically switches to --q 4. Quality 4 is incompatible with Omni Reference, so choose between the two rather than trying to combine them.
A sensible test is to use quality 1 while exploring composition, then reserve higher quality for a promising normal V7 generation. Do not spend quality 4 GPU time on an idea whose subject placement is already wrong.

If you want to evaluate V7 rather than merely produce one attractive image, run four small tests:
- Normal prompt: Use the same detailed prompt with V7 and V8.1. Compare prompt adherence, object structure, anatomy, textures, and composition.
- Reference prompt: Use one reference image with Omni Reference. Try two or three Omni weights while keeping the scene description consistent.
- Draft concept: Explore several compositions in Draft Mode without Omni Reference, then select one direction for a normal generation.
- Controlled variation: Take the strongest V7 result and change one factor—lighting, aspect ratio, material, or viewpoint—to see whether the important subject remains coherent.
Save the prompts and settings for each test. This makes your conclusion more meaningful than “V7 looks better”: you can identify whether it helped with the specific problem you care about.
Personalization, Style References, and Moodboards
V7’s visual direction can be shaped not only through words but also through Midjourney’s personalization and style systems. Personalization is built through image-rating activity. Moodboards let you curate images that represent an aesthetic you want to explore. Style References can contribute visual direction without making the referenced image’s subject the focus of the new scene.
These tools solve different problems:
- Omni Reference: “Put this subject into a new scene.”
- Style Reference: “Use visual qualities like these.”
- Moodboard: “Build a broader, curated aesthetic direction.”
- Personalization: “Adapt results to the preferences represented by my activity.”
Midjourney’s current website documentation says the Explore page’s For You view is based mostly on a user’s Global V7/V8 Personalization Profile. That does not mean every rating directly retrains V7 or changes the model itself; it means the activity helps shape personalization and discovery features.
How to give Midjourney useful feedback
Likes and comments on social media may show that people enjoyed an image, but Midjourney’s documented feedback routes are more specific. Open the Tasks page and use the activity that matches the kind of feedback you want to provide:

Be precise about what you are evaluating. If a New Version Rating task asks you to choose between two images, that is model-evaluation feedback. If you rate images in Image Aesthetics, the documented purpose is Personalization. Do not describe every rating activity as directly training V7.
Some Tasks can award extra Fast GPU time. Midjourney says image-rating rewards go to the top 2,000 raters for the day, while surveys may provide guaranteed extra hours when offered. Awarded Fast time requires an active subscription and expires 30 days after it is awarded. Availability and rewards can change, so check the task’s current terms rather than treating extra GPU time as guaranteed.

Use Explore to discover and share
Explore is Midjourney’s community showcase. You can search it and browse views such as For You, Random, Hot, and Top by day, week, or month. Opening an image reveals its creator, prompt, and settings. You can reuse prompt text, find similar visuals, and like creations.

Build a small Profile and Spotlight collection
A logged-in Midjourney member can maintain a profile with a display name, biography, social links, profile media, banner media, and selected creations. The Spotlight tab is intended for favorite or featured creations, while the Archive contains public creations. Profiles are visible only to logged-in members.
For a stronger presentation, choose a small collection with a clear idea: for example, “V7 character studies,” “rainy architectural scenes,” or “ceramic still lifes.” Put finished images in Spotlight, keep experiments organized in folders, and leave unfinished generations out of the main presentation. A curated set tells visitors more than a complete dump of every variation.
Download and share carefully
The Create page provides options to download images and to copy prompts, image URLs, and job details. You can also spotlight images, like them, move them into folders, or open Discord-created images in Discord.

Before posting externally, check:
- Whether the image is public or subject to a privacy setting.
- Whether the reference image belongs to you or you have permission to use it.
- Whether another creator’s image was used, upscaled, remixed, or incorporated.
- Whether the caption accurately identifies the work as AI-generated or AI-assisted where that disclosure is appropriate.
- Whether your intended commercial use is allowed by your plan and applicable law.
Privacy, ownership, and commercial-use cautions
Midjourney’s Terms say public content is viewable and remixable by others by default. That matters when you are preparing unreleased client work, private concepts, personal photographs, or reference material you do not want others to see. Public or shared Discord spaces can also expose content even when your workflow feels private.

Stealth Mode is available only on Pro and Mega plans according to the current plan comparison. If privacy is important, check the current plan and Terms before uploading anything sensitive; do not assume that an ordinary subscription makes a creation private.
Midjourney says users own assets they create to the fullest extent possible under applicable law, with exceptions. One important exception is the company threshold: a company earning more than $1 million in annual gross revenue must use a Pro or Mega plan to own its assets under Midjourney’s Terms. If you upscale another user’s image, the original creator retains ownership of that image.
Midjourney’s commercial-use guidance says subscribers may generally use their own images commercially, but this is a contractual service policy, not a worldwide copyright ruling. Copyright protection for AI-assisted or AI-generated work varies by jurisdiction and by the human contribution involved. Midjourney does not provide legal advice. For client campaigns, products, licensing, or high-value commercial work, document your inputs and obtain advice appropriate to your jurisdiction.

You do not need a drawing tablet to use Midjourney: the web interface and Discord are sufficient. A graphics tablet for image editing can nevertheless be useful if your process includes sketching a composition, preparing a reference image, painting over a downloaded result, creating masks, or compositing several assets. Choose one only if those tasks are part of your workflow; it will not improve Midjourney’s model or guarantee better generations.
What to publish after your test
A useful first public set could contain:
- One normal V7 image with its prompt and aspect ratio.
- One Draft Mode concept and the refined version it inspired.
- One Omni Reference result, with a note that the reference was used and that consistency is not exact.
- One controlled comparison showing how a changed setting affected the result.
Add the model and relevant settings to your captions. That gives viewers context, helps you reproduce the work, and turns a gallery into a small, honest experiment. Finish by submitting model-related comparisons through New Version Rating or other appropriate Tasks rather than assuming that ordinary social engagement is formal V7 feedback.

Is Midjourney V7 still available?
No. Omni Reference carries a subject from one image into a new creation, but results can drift. Start with the default --ow 100, test several generations, and generally stay below 400 unless you understand the effects of high stylization.
Is Omni Reference the same as perfect character consistency?
No. Image Aesthetics primarily builds Personalization data, Explore curation affects what is featured, and New Version Rating supports evaluation of an upcoming model. These are different feedback activities.
Does every Midjourney rating directly train V7?
Midjourney says subscribers may generally use their own images commercially, subject to its Terms and plan rules. Copyright and other rights vary by jurisdiction, and companies earning more than $1 million in annual gross revenue have a Pro or Mega plan requirement for asset ownership under Midjourney’s Terms.
