To place two photos side by side in Canva, add a two-cell grid to your design and drag one photo into each cell. Double-click or double-tap a photo inside its cell to adjust what appears in the crop. For custom placement, add two separate image elements and arrange them manually.
Use a two-cell grid in Canva
A two-cell grid is a straightforward way to keep two photos aligned. Canva describes grids as layouts for combining images, and media can snap into a grid or frame when you drag it over a cell. You can adjust each photo’s crop independently. Canva’s grid tutorial explains how to use and resize grids.

- Open or create a design. Choose the Canva design where you want the photos to appear.
- Add a two-photo layout. In the editor, look in Elements for a two-cell grid or a suitable two-photo layout. Canva’s labels and panel locations may change.
- Size the layout. Add the grid to the design and drag its corners to size it for the area the photos should occupy.
- Add your photos. Drag one photo into each cell. The media should snap into the grid or frame.
- Adjust each crop. Double-click or double-tap a photo inside its cell, then reposition or resize it within the crop so the desired part is visible. Check both photos before you finish. See Canva’s frame and crop guidance and its resize and crop instructions.
Grid, frame, or manual placement?

Canva’s documented grid, frame, and crop controls support these options; the best choice depends on whether you prefer a structured layout or manual control. A border element is decorative, not a photo holder. Canva says photos cannot be added to borders and recommends grids or frames instead. See Canva’s border guidance.

Fix common layout problems
The subject is cut off
Double-click or double-tap the photo inside its cell and reposition or resize it within the crop. Cropping changes which part of the photo is visible; resizing changes the element’s dimensions.
The photos need different crops
Adjust each photo within its own grid cell or frame. Check the visible area of both photos before finishing the design.

The spacing or placement is not right
Try a different two-cell grid or use separate image elements for more manual control. With separate elements, resize and position each photo yourself. If you need a decorative divider, use a border or other design element rather than trying to put a photo into a border.

A grid can provide a simple structure for a before-and-after comparison. Use the crop controls to position the important parts of each photo, and add labels if they help readers understand the comparison.

Canva mobile app instructions
The basic workflow is to add a two-cell grid or frames, place one photo in each, and adjust each crop. On a touch screen, double-tap the photo to adjust its position within the crop. Button names and locations may differ between the app and browser editor.

Can I place two photos side by side without a grid?
Yes. Add the photos as separate image elements, then resize and position each one manually. This gives you more placement control but requires you to arrange them yourself.
Can I put a photo inside a Canva border?
No. Canva’s Help Center says photos cannot be added to borders. Use a grid or frame to hold a photo, and use borders as decorative elements.
