Freepik Mystic is best for an all-in-one production workflow; Midjourney is best for aesthetic exploration and community; and DALL-E/OpenAI is best for conversational image creation and editing. They should not be treated as interchangeable models. Freepik combines generation with stock assets and design tools, Midjourney centers on dedicated image-and-video creation with GPU-based subscriptions, and DALL-E is now a legacy name within OpenAI’s newer GPT Image and ChatGPT Images lineup.
This comparison focuses on workflow, editing, privacy, commercial use, and pricing structure rather than claiming that one service produces objectively better images. No controlled, dated benchmark was supplied to establish an overall quality winner.
These are three different creative workflows
Freepik Mystic, Midjourney, and DALL-E are no longer best understood as interchangeable image models. They represent three different ways to make images: Freepik Mystic is part of an all-in-one design and stock-content suite; Midjourney is a dedicated, community-driven image and video creation service; and DALL-E is now a legacy name within OpenAI’s changing image lineup, alongside newer GPT Image and ChatGPT Images products.
For most artists and designers, the practical choice is therefore less about finding an objectively “best” generator and more about deciding what happens after the first image appears. If you need stock assets, retouching, upscaling, mockups, and delivery in one place, Freepik Mystic is the most production-oriented option. If you want a distinctive visual language, personalization, and a place to explore other people’s work, Midjourney is the stronger fit. If you prefer to describe revisions conversationally or work from uploaded images and detailed instructions, OpenAI’s image tools are the natural choice.

Short answer: choose Freepik Mystic for an integrated design workflow, Midjourney for art-directed exploration and community, and DALL-E/OpenAI for conversational iteration and instruction-heavy image editing. For a new API project, investigate GPT Image rather than starting with DALL-E 3.
Freepik Mystic: the strongest all-in-one workflow
Freepik describes Mystic as an image model available exclusively on Freepik and markets it around highly realistic results, including faces, hands, textures, and text. Those are product claims rather than the result of an independent, controlled benchmark, but they describe the role Freepik wants Mystic to play inside its broader platform.
The important distinction is that Mystic is not presented as a standalone destination. Freepik’s AI Image Generator accepts text prompts, reference images, or a combination of both. Once an image is generated, it can move into related Freepik tools for editing, retouching, background removal or replacement, upscaling, video conversion, and mockup creation. The same platform also provides access to Freepik’s stock library.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That consolidation matters in practical production. A marketer creating an illustrated product ad, for example, can generate a concept, replace an unwanted background, add or remove elements, increase the output resolution, place the result in a mockup, and combine it with stock assets without exporting between several services. A painter or illustrator can use a reference image, produce variations, clean up a selected area, and prepare a finished asset for presentation in the same general environment.
Mystic is one option within Freepik’s model marketplace
Freepik’s interface can expose several proprietary and third-party models, including Flux, Mystic, GPT-based image models, Google Imagen, Ideogram, and Seedream. This catalog is a platform snapshot, not a permanent list. Models, availability, credits, and controls can change, so a user should check the current generator interface before choosing a subscription for a particular model.
This multi-model approach is both an advantage and a complication. It gives users more ways to approach a brief without opening multiple accounts, but a Freepik subscription should not be evaluated as though it provides only Mystic. The value may come from switching models, using stock material, and finishing the work with Freepik’s editing tools.
Credits, plans, and commercial use
Freepik’s current plan documentation describes a credit system for AI actions. Plan details vary by country and billing period. The documentation identifies Premium+ and Pro plans as including unlimited image generation and editing for selected tools and models, but that benefit has exclusions, including some Character, Style, and Product LoRA training features. “Unlimited” therefore does not mean every AI action or every model is unlimited.
Do not use one advertised price as a universal comparison with Midjourney. Freepik’s price, credits, included tools, and regional terms can change. Check the plan shown for your country, the billing period, and the specific model or action you intend to use.

Freepik’s terms state that user inputs and outputs are not used to train Freepik’s own AI models. Freepik also says paid plans include commercial rights for AI-generated content. Free users and some lower tiers may have attribution or personal-use restrictions, so anyone publishing client work, selling merchandise, or using generated images in a paid campaign should verify the applicable plan and license before delivery.
If this integrated workflow is the one you need, you can try Freepik Mystic. Disclosure: thatpainter.com may earn from a qualifying subscription if an approved affiliate link is used. Freepik’s affiliate information says approved affiliates receive a unique link and can earn on a first paid subscription; self-referrals do not qualify. This does not turn Freepik’s claims into independent performance testing, and plan terms should still be checked before purchase.
Midjourney: the strongest aesthetic and community-led option
Midjourney is a dedicated image-and-video creation service rather than a stock library and design suite. Its identity is built around visual style, personalization, exploration, and subscription access to GPU-powered generation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Its Explore interface lets users browse creations, prompts, settings, and creator profiles. That makes Midjourney unusually useful for visual research and learning by observation. A creator can see how other users approached a subject, study the relationship between prompt wording and visual result, and build a personal direction from references and iterations.
The same community-centered design is a drawback when privacy matters. Public content is generally viewable and remixable. Stealth Mode provides additional privacy, but it is limited to the Pro and Mega plans. Artists working with unreleased client concepts, confidential products, or private commissions should understand this distinction before uploading reference material or generating work in a public workflow.
Plans are organized around GPU time and queue behavior
Midjourney’s official plan comparison lists Basic, Standard, Pro, and Mega tiers at published monthly prices of $10, $30, $60, and $120, respectively, with discounts available for annual billing. Prices and features can change, so these figures should be treated as the published snapshot rather than a permanent quote.
Standard, Pro, and Mega plans include unlimited image generations in Relax Mode. Relax does not mean unlimited instant rendering: it trades priority for queue time. Fast Mode uses the plan’s faster GPU allocation, while Relax Mode can be appropriate for high-volume experimentation when waiting is acceptable. Pro and Mega also include Stealth Mode.
Recommended Free Tools
This structure suits an artist who wants to explore many variations, but it is different from Freepik’s credit-and-production model. With Midjourney, the central resource is GPU time and the choice between faster access and queued generation. With Freepik, the central accounting question is often how credits and plan entitlements apply to a particular tool or model.

Model-version timing matters
Midjourney’s documentation identified V8.1 as the default version in the researched product snapshot and described features such as 2K HD mode, image prompting, personalization, and related controls. Midjourney separately announced V8.2 on July 24, 2026, describing improvements in aesthetics, image quality, and personalization. Some help documentation had not yet been fully synchronized with that announcement.
That means a current article should not casually label V8.1 as Midjourney’s newest version. The careful description is: V8.2 is the latest announced version in the current 2026 snapshot, while some documentation still describes V8.1 as the default. Check the model selector and current documentation when beginning a project, especially if a tutorial refers to a version-specific control.
Ownership is not the same as unrestricted privacy or copyright
Midjourney says users own the assets they create to the fullest extent possible under applicable law. Its terms include special rules for businesses earning more than $1 million annually and for upscaling another user’s image. Public visibility and remixability also matter: ownership language does not make another user’s publicly available image a free source for commercial work.
As with every service in this comparison, platform ownership terms and copyright protection are separate questions. AI-generated work is not automatically copyright-protected in every jurisdiction, and the legal position can depend on human contribution, source material, and local law. Keep records of your prompts, edits, source images, and human creative decisions where rights or client clearance matter.
Why “DALL-E” needs a terminology update
DALL-E remains accessible in ChatGPT through the dedicated DALL-E GPT, so the name has not disappeared. But calling DALL-E 3 OpenAI’s current image-generation product is now misleading.
OpenAI’s Help Center says DALL-E 3 is available through an API but is deprecated and directs developers to current image-generation documentation. OpenAI’s current API model catalog lists GPT Image 1 as its state-of-the-art image-generation model and lists DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3 as deprecated. For a new software integration, the relevant question is therefore not “How do I build on the newest DALL-E?” but “Which current GPT Image API model and usage terms apply to my project?”
OpenAI’s advantage is conversational context
OpenAI introduced native GPT-4o image generation in March 2025, emphasizing instruction following, text rendering, image transformation, conversational refinement, and the ability to use uploaded images as context. Later developments included GPT Image 1 in the API and ChatGPT Images 1.5, followed by ChatGPT Images 2.0.

This makes OpenAI attractive for tasks such as revising a character sheet, changing the lighting while retaining the subject, transforming a sketch into a polished concept, or creating an image containing readable labels and structured information. These strengths reflect OpenAI’s own product descriptions; they are not a claim that OpenAI wins every visual-quality comparison.
ChatGPT access and API access are different decisions
For casual users, access may come through ChatGPT and the dedicated DALL-E GPT or a current ChatGPT Images experience. For developers, API availability and pricing depend on the current OpenAI product, account, and usage model. DALL-E 3 API access being deprecated is particularly important: a tutorial or application built around an older endpoint may require migration rather than a simple subscription.
OpenAI also uses safety and provenance measures in relevant image systems, including C2PA metadata. Provenance metadata can help identify how an image was created, but it does not by itself settle copyright ownership, permission to use uploaded material, or every platform-specific privacy question. Check the current OpenAI product terms for the tool you actually use.

The table describes product positioning and documented workflows, not an independent image-quality ranking. A controlled comparison would need the same prompts, settings, references, output sizes, date, and evaluation criteria across all three services.
Which tool is best for a painter, illustrator, or designer?
Choose Freepik Mystic if finishing the asset is part of the job
Freepik is the practical choice when the generated image is only one step in a larger design assignment. It is especially attractive if you regularly need to:
- combine generated imagery with stock photographs, vectors, or other library assets;
- remove or replace backgrounds;
- retouch an image or correct a localized problem;
- upscale artwork for a larger presentation or print-related use;
- place a design into a product or advertising mockup; or
- move from a still image toward video or another delivery format.
For a working designer, fewer handoffs can be more valuable than a small difference in the first generated image. The tradeoff is plan complexity: inspect credits, model availability, commercial rights, and exclusions before assuming that one subscription covers every part of the workflow.
Choose Midjourney if visual direction matters most
Midjourney is the better fit when the central activity is exploring a look. It suits artists who want to:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- iterate through many aesthetic possibilities;
- use personalization and style references to develop a recognizable direction;
- study prompts and settings through the Explore community;
- generate at scale with Relax Mode when queue time is acceptable; or
- work primarily in a dedicated image-making environment rather than a broader design suite.
Its public-by-default posture is the main operational warning. Use Stealth Mode where the plan supports it, and do not upload confidential references without understanding the service’s current privacy terms.

Choose OpenAI when the brief is conversational or information-dense
OpenAI’s current image workflow is a strong candidate when the work depends on explaining, revising, and preserving context in natural language. Consider it when you need to:
- turn a sketch or uploaded reference into a new visual direction;
- make several edits without rewriting a complete prompt each time;
- create images with readable text, labels, or structured information;
- describe relationships between multiple objects or layout constraints; or
- stay inside ChatGPT while developing both the brief and the image.
If you are choosing an API for a new application, start your research with GPT Image and current OpenAI image documentation. Treat DALL-E 3 as a deprecated API product rather than OpenAI’s newest endpoint.
Use more than one when the stages are genuinely different
There is no requirement to make one service handle every task. A sensible multi-tool workflow could use Midjourney for broad visual exploration, OpenAI for conversational edits or text-heavy compositions, and Freepik for stock integration, finishing, licensing checks, mockups, and delivery.
The cost of that approach is extra subscriptions, file movement, and license tracking. Use it when each handoff solves a real problem. Otherwise, the convenience of one integrated tool may outweigh marginal differences in generation style.
A practical way to choose without relying on hype
- Define the deliverable. Decide whether you need a concept, a finished social graphic, a print-ready image, a mockup, a short video, a character sheet, or an API-generated asset. The deliverable often determines the best platform more reliably than a model name.
- List your inputs. Note whether you will use only text, a sketch, a product photograph, a style reference, or confidential client material. Reference-image handling and privacy may eliminate an otherwise attractive option.
- Separate generation from finishing. If background work, retouching, upscaling, stock assets, and mockups are regular requirements, Freepik’s integrated workflow has a clear operational advantage. If not, a dedicated generator may be sufficient.
- Decide how much iteration you need. Midjourney’s high-volume exploration and OpenAI’s conversational revision solve different problems. Choose based on whether you want many visual branches or fewer, more contextual edits.
- Check the current plan before comparing price. Compare the actual tools you will use: credits and exclusions on Freepik, Fast and Relax GPU behavior on Midjourney, and the current ChatGPT or API terms for OpenAI.
- Clear rights before publication. Confirm the commercial license for the plan, the rights to reference images, the privacy setting, and any client or marketplace requirements. Do not confuse a platform’s ownership language with guaranteed copyright protection.
Optional equipment for a painting-oriented workflow
None of these tools is required for text-to-image generation. They become useful only when they match a specific task.
- A drawing tablet: useful for sketching reference material, masking, retouching, and pressure-sensitive work in a compatible graphics application. It does not improve the underlying AI model or make prompts more effective.
- A color-accurate monitor: relevant when you are evaluating gradients, skin tones, print colors, or client-facing production assets. It is a professional review tool, not a requirement for experimenting with any of these services.
- An AI art prompt book or composition guide: potentially useful for beginners who need help structuring visual briefs, but it is supplementary. No particular book should be treated as necessary or best without a current product-level comparison.
Bottom line
Freepik Mystic is the most convincing choice when AI generation is one part of a complete design pipeline. Midjourney remains the more natural home for aesthetic exploration, personalization, and community-led discovery. DALL-E is still available in ChatGPT, but OpenAI’s current direction is GPT Image and ChatGPT Images, so new users and developers should evaluate those products rather than treating DALL-E 3 as the endpoint of the platform.
For a painter or designer, start with the work you must deliver: generate, edit, combine, upscale, publish, or integrate. The best tool is the one that handles the most important steps with the fewest costly compromises.
