You can make AI-generated images in ChatGPT by describing the result in a conversation or choosing More → Images. The best results come from a repeatable loop: specify the visual intent, generate a draft, inspect it for defects, and request a constrained revision. You do not need a secret prompt formula, but you do need to describe the subject, composition, visual treatment, lighting, text, and intended format clearly.
The short version
To make an image with ChatGPT, open ChatGPT and either describe the image in a normal conversation or choose More → Images and enter a prompt. Start with the subject and intended result, then add the setting, action, composition, visual treatment, lighting, colors, mood, text requirements, constraints, and aspect ratio. Generate a draft, inspect it carefully, and ask for a small, specific revision rather than starting over.
The most reliable workflow is conversational:
- Describe what you want.
- Generate the first draft.
- Find one or two defects.
- Ask ChatGPT to change only those details.
- Review the final image before downloading or publishing it.
ChatGPT Images can create illustrations, posters, concept art, social graphics, product mockups, wallpapers, and other still images. It is not a guarantee of factual accuracy, perfect typography, photorealism, or unrestricted commercial rights, so human review remains essential.
How to create an AI-generated image in ChatGPT
1. Open the image-generation experience
Sign in to ChatGPT on the web or in the iOS or Android app. You can start by typing an image request into an ordinary conversation, or select More → Images and enter the request there. Depending on the complexity of the image, generation may take several minutes.

For a first attempt, be direct:
Create an image of a small red fox reading a book beneath an oak tree at sunset.That request may produce a usable idea, but it leaves many creative decisions to the model. More information usually gives you more control.
2. Describe the result, not just the genre
“Make fantasy art” or “create a realistic landscape” identifies a broad category, but it does not explain what the image should contain. A stronger prompt states the visual decisions that matter to you.

You do not need to follow a rigid magic formula. Think of the list as a way to avoid leaving important decisions unspecified.

A practical prompt template
Use this structure when you need more control:
Create a [format or visual treatment] of [subject] [action] in [setting].
Use [composition and viewpoint]. The lighting should be [lighting], with a [color palette] palette and a [mood] mood.
Include [important details]. Exclude [unwanted details].
Add [exact text requirements, if any].
Make the final image [aspect ratio] for [intended use].For example:
Create a square editorial illustration of a cozy home office at sunrise, viewed from a slightly elevated angle. Include a wooden desk, a laptop, a ceramic mug, leafy plants, and a pinboard with three blank notes. Use warm amber sunlight, soft shadows, muted green and terracotta accents, and a clean magazine-illustration look. Leave generous negative space in the upper-left corner for a headline. Do not include readable words or logos.This prompt is useful because it describes not only the objects, but also the viewpoint, visual language, palette, layout, and intended space for later design work.
How to get readable text inside an image
ChatGPT Images can follow instructions to add text and other details within an image, but typography still deserves close inspection. When wording matters, put the exact text in quotation marks or otherwise clearly identify it. State capitalization, spelling, placement, and importance.
Create a portrait event poster. Add the exact headline “SPRING OPEN STUDIO” in uppercase at the top. Below it, add the exact date “APRIL 20” in smaller type. Keep both lines centered, high-contrast, and fully legible. Do not add any other words, logos, or fake sponsor names.After generation, zoom in and check every letter. If the text is wrong, ask for a correction:
Keep the artwork, colors, layout, and subject unchanged. Correct the headline so it reads exactly “SPRING OPEN STUDIO”. Remove all other text. Do not change the illustration.For business-critical signs, labels, packaging, or long paragraphs, treat the generated wording as a draft. Recreating the typography in a conventional design or editing program may be more dependable than relying on a single generated image.

The advantage of ChatGPT is that image creation can remain in the same conversation as the idea and critique. You do not have to rewrite the complete prompt for every attempt. Preserve what already works and request one or two constrained changes.

Good revision requests identify what must stay fixed:
Keep the composition, character design, camera angle, lighting, and color palette unchanged. Replace only the wall behind the desk with a pale blue textured wall. Remove the framed poster and leave that area blank. Preserve the original aspect ratio.This is usually safer than saying “make it better,” which gives the model permission to alter unrelated details. For a character illustration, you might say:
Keep the same character, clothing, pose, and facial expression. Change only the background from a forest to a rainy city street. Match the existing lighting and illustration style.Small changes can still cause some visual drift. If an important feature changes, remind ChatGPT of that feature in the next revision and compare the new result with the earlier version.
How to edit an existing image
You can edit a generated result or upload an existing image. Select the image and describe the change. When the edit affects a particular area, you can use the selection tool or identify the region in the conversation panel.
Be explicit about both the area to change and the areas to protect:
Edit only the upper-right corner of the image. Replace the cloudy sky with a pale sunset gradient. Keep the building, trees, people, shadows, camera angle, and original aspect ratio unchanged.Selection highlights are not always precise. An edit may extend beyond the selected boundary, so inspect nearby edges, objects, shadows, and reflections. If the selection is approximate, compensate with language such as “change only this region” and “leave everything outside it unchanged.” Several smaller edits may be easier to control than one broad instruction.
Choose the aspect ratio before you finish
Use the aspect-ratio picker when available, or request the shape in the prompt. The right choice depends on where the image will be used:

- Portrait: phone wallpapers, posters, story-style social content, and book-cover concepts.
- Landscape: website banners, presentation slides, desktop wallpapers, and wide scenes.
- Specific ratio: use a target such as 16:9 when the destination has a known layout.
Aspect ratio affects composition. If the image will contain a headline, say where you want negative space rather than hoping the model leaves room by chance. For example: “Use a wide landscape layout and leave the left third uncluttered for website copy.”

Save, download, or reuse a ChatGPT image
Images created with ChatGPT are automatically saved under Images. From the image controls, you can copy, save or download, and share the result. Keep the original conversation if you may need to return to the prompt and revision history.
One important limitation is that deleting the conversation where the image was created removes the image from My images. Download work you need to retain before deleting that conversation, and keep a local copy of final artwork and important source images.
A quality-control checklist before publishing
A convincing image can still contain subtle errors. Before using it in a painting reference, article, portfolio, advertisement, or social post, inspect:
- Hands, fingers, feet, ears, eyes, and facial symmetry
- Repeated objects, duplicated people, and inconsistent patterns
- Small text, dates, numbers, labels, and signs
- Logos, trademarks, product details, and recognizable characters
- Shadows and whether they agree with the light source
- Reflections in glass, water, mirrors, and polished surfaces
- Edges of selected or masked edits
- Unexpected objects, borders, artifacts, or changes to protected areas
- Whether the image is factually appropriate for its intended use
Do not use an AI-generated image as proof that a person, place, product, event, or historical scene looks a certain way. If accuracy matters, verify the underlying facts separately.
What ChatGPT Images is—and is not—doing
OpenAI’s current Images help documentation says ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available across all ChatGPT tiers and that ChatGPT Images works on the web, iOS, and Android. Plan limits, feature names, and availability can change, so check the current product documentation for your account, region, and date rather than assuming every account has identical limits.
The same documentation describes Images with thinking as available on Plus, Pro, and Business, with Enterprise and Edu availability described as forthcoming at the time of that documentation. This is a product-availability detail, not a guarantee that every user will see the same control.
OpenAI also says users can continue to access DALL·E through the DALL·E GPT on Free, Plus, Business, and Pro plans. That is a separate route from the newer ChatGPT Images experience; do not treat “ChatGPT Images” and DALL·E as interchangeable names for one interface or model.
Provenance, watermarks, and responsible disclosure
OpenAI says images generated with ChatGPT, Codex, and its API include C2PA metadata and SynthID watermarks. C2PA is embedded provenance metadata, while SynthID is an invisible watermark signal in the generated media. OpenAI provides an online verification tool that checks uploaded images for supported signals.

A positive signal can help indicate supported OpenAI provenance, but it does not establish that an image is accurate, unedited, legally owned, or shown in the correct context. A negative result does not prove that OpenAI did not generate the image: metadata may have been stripped, a watermark may have degraded, the source may be unsupported, or the image may predate those signals.
If you publish AI-generated art, label it honestly when that information matters to your audience or platform. For commercial work, separately review recognizable people, trademarks, copyrighted characters, and any third-party source image you upload. Provenance technology is useful documentation; it is not a substitute for rights review.

You do not need special hardware, a camera, a printer, or a stock-photo subscription to create images in ChatGPT. A physical AI art prompt book or printed prompt guide can nevertheless be useful if you want offline examples and exercises rather than keeping every idea inside the chat interface. Treat it as optional supplemental learning, not a requirement.

A mouse or trackpad is sufficient for basic use. Choose additional editing or provenance tools based on the work you actually need to do, rather than buying equipment before you have identified a limitation.
Common problems and better fixes
The result is too generic
Add the missing decisions: viewpoint, subject placement, lighting, palette, medium, mood, and intended use. Replace “beautiful fantasy landscape” with a description of the landscape’s geography, time of day, camera position, and visual treatment.
The image keeps changing too much
Stop rewriting the entire prompt. Refer to the existing result and say exactly what to preserve. Request one change at a time, particularly when character identity, product geometry, or a carefully balanced composition matters.
The selected edit spills outside the target
Describe the selected region and list nearby elements that must remain unchanged. Inspect the boundary after generation. If necessary, undo or return to the earlier result and make a smaller edit.
The text is almost right but not usable
Provide the exact wording again, including capitalization and punctuation. Ask ChatGPT to remove every other word and preserve the artwork. For lengthy or high-stakes typography, finish the text in a dedicated design workflow.

The output has the wrong shape
Choose the aspect-ratio control before generating when possible. Otherwise state the desired shape or ratio in the prompt and explain the destination. Reframing a finished image can crop important subjects, so composition should be planned early.
A repeatable workflow for painters and visual creators
- Define the job: reference image, mood board, poster concept, landscape study, character idea, or finished illustration.
- Write the visual brief: subject, setting, composition, palette, light, medium, exclusions, and output shape.
- Generate a draft: begin with a clear request and allow time for the image to finish.
- Inspect deliberately: look for anatomy, repetition, text, edges, shadows, and unintended details.
- Choose one defect: do not ask for ten unrelated corrections at once.
- Revise with constraints: state what changes and what must remain unchanged.
- Repeat only as needed: compare revisions so useful details do not gradually disappear.
- Export and document: download the final image, retain the source conversation if useful, and disclose AI generation when appropriate.
The central skill is not discovering a secret prompt. It is turning an artistic intention into specific visual instructions, then evaluating and refining the result with care.

Yes. You can select a generated image or upload an existing one, then describe the desired edit. Use the selection tool for a region-specific change, but check the edges because edits can extend beyond the selected area.
Can ChatGPT generate images with text?
