Hands-on with EasyCanvas: A Second-Display App for Digital Artists

EasyCanvas can turn a compatible iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab into a Windows drawing display and second monitor. It is most useful for artists who already own the tablet: connect it by USB for the most dependable line response, configure pressure inside the art application, and use Windows extended-display mode for a tablet canvas with desktop palettes and references nearby.

That makes EasyCanvas a practical bridge to Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, and other Windows software—not a universal replacement for a dedicated pen display or a native tablet drawing workflow.

Verdict: useful, but best treated as a wired bridge—not a universal pen-display replacement

EasyCanvas can turn a compatible iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab into a Windows drawing surface and second monitor. For an artist who already owns the tablet, that can be a practical way to work in Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or other desktop software without buying another display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its strongest setup is a compatible tablet connected by USB, with Windows set to extend the desktop and the art application configured for the correct tablet-input mode. Wired use is the safer choice for fast inking, hatching, and animation. Wi-Fi is convenient and can work well for slower painting, references, and general desktop use, but network conditions can make delay more noticeable.

EasyCanvas is less compelling if you expect the consistency of a dedicated pen display, or if what you really want is to draw directly in a native iPad or Android art app. EasyCanvas routes the desktop workflow through a virtual-display and input layer, so the result depends on the tablet, cable or network, Windows graphics stack, display scaling, and the host application.

What EasyCanvas actually does

EasyCanvas consists of a tablet app and a Windows desktop component. Together, they present the tablet to Windows as a virtual display and drawing-input device. You can use it in at least three practical ways:

  • Extended display: Windows treats the tablet as another monitor. Put the canvas on the tablet and keep palettes, references, or other applications on the main monitor.
  • Duplicated display: The tablet mirrors the Windows display, which is useful when showing work to another person or when you want the same canvas visible in two places.
  • Desktop drawing surface: Open Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or another Windows art program and draw on the tablet while the program runs on the PC.

The advertised feature set includes pressure sensitivity, tilt sensitivity, palm rejection, finger gestures, configurable keyboard shortcuts, and support for wired and wireless connections. The Android listing specifically names Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint and describes the tablet as both a liquid-crystal drawing tablet and a dual monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That description is important: EasyCanvas is primarily a way to access desktop software from a tablet. It is not a way to make a Windows version of the tablet’s native drawing apps appear on the device, and it does not remove the limitations of the virtual-display path.

Check the product edition before installing

“EasyCanvas” does not describe one completely interchangeable compatibility target. The original iPad app and the newer EasyCanvas2025 product page have different stated requirements.

Edition or platform Stated compatibility and notes
Original EasyCanvas for iPad The listing identifies Windows 10 with WDDM 2.0 or later and iPadOS/iOS 12.2 or later. Its version 4.8.4 history, dated October 1, 2024, mentions Apple Pencil Pro, hover, and double-tap support.
EasyCanvas2025 The newer product page explicitly supports Windows 11 only. It advertises wired and wireless operation, extended and duplicated displays, stylus input, gestures, shortcuts, pressure, tilt, palm rejection, and refresh rates up to 120Hz.
Android / Galaxy Tab version The Google Play listing describes Windows 10 or later and names Galaxy Tab S3, S4, S6, S6 Lite, S7, S7+, and S7 FE, with S Pen support. It also lists USB and Wi-Fi connections and refresh rates up to 120Hz.

Do not infer that a tablet compatible with one edition is automatically supported by every other edition. Check the current store listing for your exact tablet model, operating-system version, and stylus. Store ratings, download counts, app versions, and compatibility lists can change; at the time covered by the research, the Android listing showed 50K+ downloads and a 2.7-star rating from 189 reviews.

For an iPad setup, Apple Pencil support is also model-dependent. An iPad that works with EasyCanvas is not necessarily compatible with every Apple Pencil generation. For Android, the published compatibility information is specifically about named Galaxy Tab families with compatible S Pen hardware—not generic Android tablets.

First setup: the reliable order of operations

  1. Confirm the exact edition. Check the tablet family and Windows version against the current iPad, Android, or EasyCanvas2025 listing before spending time troubleshooting.
  2. Install the Windows component. Install EL Display Hub or the related EasyCanvas desktop program supplied for your edition. Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
  3. Install EasyCanvas on the tablet. Use the official app for the appropriate platform rather than assuming that an iPad and Android installation behave identically.
  4. Start with USB. Connect the tablet directly to the computer using a genuine or otherwise data-capable cable. A charging-only cable cannot provide the required data connection.
  5. Verify data transfer. The tablet and PC should be able to exchange data. On Android, check the USB notification and select file transfer if necessary. USB debugging may need to be toggled when the Android connection is not detected.
  6. Choose the display mode. In Windows display settings or the EasyCanvas controls, select extended display for a separate workspace or duplicated display to mirror the main screen.
  7. Test inside the art application. Make a pressure test from a light stroke to a firm stroke, then check tilt if your stylus supports it. Do this before judging the app’s drawing performance.

For a wired setup, a data-capable USB-C cable is more important than a cable that merely charges the tablet. The tablet’s port may require USB-C, Lightning, or another connector, so confirm the connector and data standard for your particular model. Avoid an unreliable or unpowered USB hub during initial setup; if a hub is necessary, an externally powered hub is the safer option.

USB versus Wi-Fi: which connection should artists use?

Task Recommended connection Why
Fast inking, hatching, or animation USB More consistent and less dependent on local network traffic.
Ordinary sketching and painting USB first; Wi-Fi if responsive enough Wireless can be convenient, but the acceptable delay depends on the tablet, PC, network, and canvas.
References, palettes, or general second-screen use Wi-Fi can be sufficient Display convenience may matter more than the last measure of stroke responsiveness.
Travel or a cable-free workspace Wi-Fi Useful when convenience outweighs the possibility of variable latency.

Official product material positions wired operation as stable and fast and Wi-Fi as flexible. A hands-on report found USB responsive for normal sketching and inking, while wireless delay became more apparent during fast hatching or gesture drawing, particularly on crowded networks.

There is no defensible universal latency number here. Wireless performance changes with network congestion, the computer’s workload, tablet hardware, application rendering, and the size and complexity of the canvas. Test the exact brush and canvas you use. A connection that feels fine for a large, slow-painted illustration may feel frustrating for tight line art.

Drawing feel: pressure works, but configuration matters

The practical reports are encouraging: pressure response was reported as reliable in Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint, and Clip Studio appeared particularly favorable for controlled line work. But pressure is not controlled by EasyCanvas alone. The host application’s tablet-input mode, brush settings, and pressure curve can change the result substantially.

  • PLEASE NOTE: The XPPen StarG 430 is compatible with the Windows system 11/10/8/7(32/64 bit), and the Mac OS X version 10.10 or later, but it is incompatible with iOS and iPad OS. If your computer is a Mac, you need to grant permission to the Mac preferences first. Please go to our official website, and according to the guide: XPPen>Support>FAQ, find out the Star G430 and click, then click the question according to your Mac system. There are detailed guidelines for installing the driver so your tablet will work correctly. It's possible incompatible with the customer's own EMR system or other signature system. Please feel free to contact us to confirm the compatibility before your purchase
  1. Open the art program’s tablet or stylus settings.
  2. Check whether it is using the appropriate Windows TabletPC or equivalent input mode rather than an incompatible mode for your setup.
  3. Confirm that the selected brush responds to pressure for size, opacity, or both.
  4. Inspect the application’s pressure curve and make a test stroke after changing it.
  5. Restart the art program after changing tablet-input settings if the change does not take effect immediately.

App Store feedback describes pressure beginning to work after switching Clip Studio Paint to the appropriate TabletPC setting. That does not prove every application needs the same setting, but it is a useful diagnostic: a failed pressure test does not automatically mean that EasyCanvas lacks pressure sensitivity.

The hands-on experience also reported that scaling and resolution settings affected perceived sharpness and line stability. Aggressive zooming and navigation could feel slightly softer than on a native pen display. Those are setup-dependent observations, not laboratory measurements or guarantees for every tablet and computer.

Extended display, duplicated display, and scaling

Extended mode is generally the more useful arrangement for artists. It gives the tablet its own canvas while leaving the main monitor available for tool panels, references, file management, or communication. Duplicated mode is simpler, but it gives you less workspace and can expose scaling differences between the two displays.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the canvas looks soft, the cursor seems offset, or strokes do not feel stable:

  • Check Windows display scaling on both screens.
  • Confirm that the tablet is running at the intended resolution and refresh rate.
  • Move the art application fully onto the tablet rather than stretching it across displays.
  • Test at a moderate zoom before drawing conclusions about line quality.
  • Update Windows and the graphics driver if the display capture itself looks wrong.

EasyCanvas2025 advertises refresh rates up to 120Hz, but the actual result depends on the tablet, connection, Windows configuration, and application. “Up to 120Hz” should not be read as a promise that every supported setup will deliver that rate while rendering a demanding canvas.

Troubleshooting connection and display failures

If the tablet is not detected

  1. Try a different data-capable cable and a different computer port.
  2. Connect directly to the PC and remove the USB hub from the chain.
  3. On Android, confirm file transfer mode and try toggling USB debugging.
  4. On iPad, investigate possible iTunes-for-Windows conflicts. The support documentation specifically notes that a Microsoft Store installation of iTunes can cause connection failures in some cases.
  5. Restart both the tablet and PC.
  6. Reinstall or repair EL Display Hub and restart again.

If the display is captured incorrectly or looks blank

Update Windows and the graphics driver, then reinstall the Windows program if necessary. The troubleshooting documentation also describes possible virtual-driver conflicts and an NVIDIA Control Panel issue involving the EL Display service process. If the problem began after installing another virtual-display or capture tool, test with that software disabled where practical.

If drawing works but pressure does not

Return to the host application’s tablet-input mode and brush-pressure settings. Test in a second supported application if possible. This separates an application configuration problem from a general connection problem.

If Wi-Fi feels delayed

Switch to USB before changing every driver setting. If wireless is the only option, reduce network congestion, keep the devices on a suitable local network, close unnecessary workloads, and test with a smaller or less complex canvas. Do not use a single wireless test as a universal verdict on the product.

Privacy: what the published disclosures say

EasyCanvas’s published privacy policy says the software may collect non-personally identifying usage data for analytics and product improvement. It also says troubleshooting logs contain system information and program events. Apple’s App Store privacy panel separately indicates that diagnostics, crash data, and performance data may be collected without being linked to the user; Apple notes that the developer’s disclosures have not been independently verified by Apple.

That is a disclosure about data categories, not evidence that the app reads or uploads artwork. The practical takeaway is to review the current policy and the store privacy panel, especially before sending support logs. Do not include sensitive project files or unrelated personal information in a support submission.

Who should use EasyCanvas?

It is a good fit if you:

  • Already own a compatible iPad or Galaxy Tab and stylus.
  • Want Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, or another Windows application on a tablet-sized drawing surface.
  • Value portability, reuse, or saving desk space.
  • Are willing to check compatibility and adjust Windows, display, and application settings.
  • Can use USB for work where responsive line control matters most.

Choose a dedicated pen display or graphics tablet instead if you:

  • Want fixed compatibility and a purpose-built display-input stack.
  • Depend on hardware shortcut buttons, dial controls, or a permanent cable setup.
  • Cannot tolerate occasional virtual-display, scaling, or application-specific problems.
  • Do not already own a suitable tablet and would need to buy one solely for EasyCanvas.

A dedicated pen display is not required for EasyCanvas, but it is the more straightforward alternative for readers who prioritize consistency over reusing existing hardware. EasyCanvas is the more interesting option when the tablet is already in the studio and another display purchase would be wasteful.

Bottom line

EasyCanvas is a credible way to repurpose a compatible iPad or Galaxy Tab as a Windows drawing display and second monitor. Its best-case workflow is a USB-connected tablet, extended desktop, correctly configured pressure input, and an art application that behaves well with the virtual tablet layer. It can feel responsive and useful in that role.

It is not the same as drawing in a native tablet app, and it is not automatically as predictable as a dedicated pen display. Verify the exact edition and tablet model, start with USB, test pressure in your actual application, and treat Wi-Fi as a convenience mode rather than the default for demanding line work. For existing compatible-tablet owners, those conditions make EasyCanvas worth trying; for everyone else, compare its setup trade-offs with a purpose-built drawing display before buying hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EasyCanvas used for?

EasyCanvas is an app and Windows desktop component that lets a compatible iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab act as a virtual Windows display and drawing-input surface. You can extend or duplicate the Windows desktop and use desktop applications such as Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint on the tablet.

Is EasyCanvas better over USB or Wi-Fi?

Use USB for fast inking, hatching, animation, and other latency-sensitive work. Wi-Fi can be convenient for slower painting, references, and general second-screen use, but delay depends on the local network, tablet, PC, and application.

Does EasyCanvas replace a dedicated drawing tablet?

Not necessarily. EasyCanvas routes desktop software through a virtual-display and input layer. A dedicated pen display generally offers more predictable drivers, compatibility, cable behavior, and hardware controls, while EasyCanvas is attractive when you already own a compatible tablet.

Why is pressure sensitivity not working in my art program?

Check the host application’s tablet-input mode, brush pressure settings, and pressure curve. In Clip Studio Paint, user feedback and hands-on testing indicate that the appropriate TabletPC setting may be needed for pressure to work correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Android tablets work with EasyCanvas?

The researched Android listing names Galaxy Tab S3, S4, S6, S6 Lite, S7, S7+, and S7 FE with compatible S Pen hardware. Compatibility is edition-specific, so check the current listing for the exact tablet and Windows version before installing.

The Bottom Line

Best use case: an existing compatible iPad or Galaxy Tab used over USB as a Windows drawing display or second monitor. EasyCanvas is practical and potentially responsive, but its success depends on the exact edition, tablet, Windows graphics stack, connection, scaling, and host-application settings. It complements rather than universally replaces a dedicated pen display.
