The later public record is more specific: Midjourney now describes a medical-imaging initiative, Midjourney Medical, centered on a planned water-immersion ultrasound scanner for general-wellness body-composition mapping. Here is what is confirmed, what remains speculation, and what the company’s 2027 targets do—and do not—promise.
The August 28, 2024 announcement confirmed that Midjourney was entering hardware and recruiting for a new San Francisco team. It did not announce a finished device, a product name, a form factor, a release date, or a consumer launch. Contemporary reporting from TechCrunch described several hardware efforts as being in progress.
The story has since developed substantially. Midjourney’s current careers information identifies Midjourney Medical as a division working on hardware, software, and machine learning for a medical-imaging system. Its later materials describe a planned water-immersion ultrasound scanner for general-wellness body-composition mapping—not an MRI replacement or a diagnostic disease scanner.
What Midjourney actually announced in 2024
Midjourney’s official announcement was brief: the company said it was “officially getting into hardware,” identified San Francisco as the location for the new team, and invited interested applicants to contact [email protected]. That email address was relevant to the original announcement, but it should not be treated as the current application route.
The announcement established a strategic direction and a hiring effort. It did not establish any of the following:
- a shipping Midjourney device;
- a confirmed headset, wearable, orb, console, scanner, or other form factor;
- a finalized product specification;
- a consumer price or distribution plan;
- a public launch date.
That distinction matters because much of the early discussion focused on what Midjourney might build rather than what it had built. Reports and public comments referenced “new form factors,” a device users might go “inside of,” and an “orb.” Those comments were intriguing clues, but they were not product specifications. Nothing in the 2024 announcement confirmed an orb, immersive room, headset, or wearable.
Why people expected an unusual device
The hardware effort had plausible links to spatial computing and sensing, although those links did not prove Midjourney’s product plans. TechCrunch connected the initiative with Ahmad Abbas, whose background included hardware work associated with Apple Vision Pro and Neuralink. Founder David Holz had previously co-founded Leap Motion and served as its chief technology officer.

Those backgrounds help explain why observers considered spatial interfaces, sensors, and immersive experiences possible areas of interest. They do not demonstrate that Midjourney intended to make a headset or any particular physical product. The only confirmed fact at that stage was that the company was building a hardware team.

The later record gives the 2024 announcement a more concrete context. Midjourney’s current careers page lists Midjourney Medical alongside the company’s infrastructure and product teams. It describes the group as working on hardware, software, and machine learning for a new medical-imaging system.
Midjourney’s June 2026 materials describe that system as a planned full-body ultrasound-imaging device, generally referred to as the Midjourney Scanner. The initial use case is narrower than the phrase “medical imaging” might suggest: the first-generation product is intended for general-wellness body-composition mapping.
Butterfly Network’s investor-events page identifies Butterfly as a Midjourney Embedded partner and records a June 17, 2026 hardware-unveiling livestream. Specialist reporting from AuntMinnie described a planned system using a ring of 40 Butterfly ultrasound-on-chip modules. That partnership explains the sensing technology being discussed, but it does not mean consumers can buy or operate a compatible scanner at home.
How the planned scanner is supposed to work
Midjourney’s own device-development update describes a very different experience from a conventional handheld ultrasound examination:

- The user changes into swimwear and showers.
- The user enters a private scanner.
- The user is lowered into warm water.
- A ring of ultrasound sensors collects imaging data around the immersed body.
- The system produces a body-composition map that is associated with the user’s account.
Water immersion is part of the proposed scanning workflow, not an optional accessory or a procedure consumers are expected to recreate themselves. The public materials describe a dedicated facility and a specialized device.

- Long-term goal: Midjourney has described an eventual scan time of about 60 seconds.
The approximately 60-second figure is therefore a future objective, not the demonstrated performance of the first-generation system. AuntMinnie reported the same longer-term target while describing the current device as still under development.
Is the Midjourney Scanner a diagnostic device?
Not based on the current public claims. Midjourney says the initial product is not intended to diagnose or treat disease. Its published regulatory account says the company submitted a 513(g) request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and received a response dated June 4, 2026. According to Midjourney, the FDA classified the device as a Class II body-composition analyzer, product code OMV, and found it exempt from 510(k) premarket notification when used within the stated general-wellness intended use.
That description should not be rewritten as “FDA-approved medical scanner” or “FDA-cleared diagnostic imaging.” A 513(g) classification response and an exemption for a limited intended use do not establish that the scanner can detect disease, diagnose patients, or replace MRI, CT, clinical ultrasound, or other medical imaging.
Midjourney also says that expanding the product beyond body-composition or general-wellness claims could change the regulatory pathway and require more extensive premarket review. The regulatory status is therefore tied to the intended use described by the company, not to every possible future application of the hardware.
What do the published images prove?
Midjourney says the scan images shown in its announcement came from real volunteers rather than being AI-generated. The company also identifies independent WCG institutional review board involvement in its image-collection study, with a consent form approved in March 2026.
This supports describing the images as material collected from a volunteer study. It does not establish diagnostic accuracy, clinical sensitivity, clinical specificity, or superiority to established imaging systems. Volunteer imagery and regulatory classification are not substitutes for published clinical-performance evidence.

Midjourney’s published schedule separates scanner development from the planned location where people may eventually use it. The dates below are targets and may change:

A planned release-ready milestone is not the same as retail availability, regulatory clearance for diagnosis, or proof that the San Francisco spa will open on schedule. Midjourney explicitly cautions that the dates are targets.

People interested in joining the project should use the individual live job listings on Midjourney’s careers page. The company says emailed applications can be lost, so the historical 2024 hardware email should not be repeated as though it were the current application system.

- the Bay Area and London are preferred locations;
- remote work may be possible for some roles;
- the company values self-directed, communicative, proactive people;
- portfolios and projects may matter more than conventional resumes.
Because the job board is live, a specific hardware or medical-device position may no longer be open when you read this. Applicants should check the current listings rather than rely on the 2024 announcement or assume that every role relates to a released product. Midjourney also notes that some jobs may belong to secret projects that do not yet correspond to publicly available products.
What this means for Midjourney’s hardware ambitions
The most accurate interpretation is that Midjourney’s hardware strategy evolved from an intentionally vague 2024 hiring announcement into a more defined medical-imaging project. The company appears to be combining custom physical hardware, ultrasound sensing, software, machine learning, and a controlled service environment.
That does not mean every idea discussed after the 2024 announcement was part of the same project. The orb and immersive-device comments remain unconfirmed, while Midjourney Medical’s scanner is now the clearest publicly documented hardware effort. It is also possible that other undisclosed projects exist: Midjourney’s careers page says the company has additional secret work underway.
For readers following the technology rather than looking for a product to buy, the most important questions are still ahead: whether Gen 2 meets its verification and validation targets, whether the planned wellness service opens, what repeatability the body-composition maps achieve, and whether Midjourney eventually seeks broader clinical claims. Until those answers are published, the scanner should be understood as a planned specialized system—not a consumer gadget or a replacement for clinical imaging.
