Adobe’s new Photoshop AI tools address two different bottlenecks: Harmonize helps a foreground person or object fit into a new background, while Generative Upscale enlarges an image to 2x or 4x and attempts to restore or create detail. They accelerate parts of a compositing and restoration workflow, but they do not replace masking, lighting judgment, perspective correction, or accuracy checks.
What Adobe’s new Photoshop AI tools do
Adobe’s two new Photoshop tools solve different problems. Harmonize automatically adjusts a person or object placed into a new background so its color, lighting, shadows, and overall visual tone better match the scene. Generative Upscale enlarges an image to 2x or 4x its original size while attempting to restore or create useful detail.

Neither tool replaces the judgment involved in a convincing composite or a careful restoration. Harmonize produces a starting point on a new layer; Generative Upscale can improve an image’s apparent resolution but cannot guarantee that faces, small text, logos, or complex textures will be reconstructed accurately. Both are best understood as AI-assisted steps inside a larger Photoshop workflow.
Adobe first showed Harmonize publicly as Project Perfect Blend at Adobe MAX in October 2024. The company introduced Harmonize and Generative Upscale as beta features for Photoshop desktop and web on July 29, 2025. Adobe’s later Creative Cloud update and current 2026 help documentation describe broader availability and the current Generative Upscale model options, so the original beta announcement should not be treated as a complete description of the present feature set.
Harmonize: Photoshop’s AI object-blending tool
When a foreground subject is cut out and placed into a different scene, the edges are only part of the problem. The subject may have been photographed under cool daylight while the background uses warm indoor lighting. Its contrast, saturation, direction of light, and shadow softness may also be wrong.
Harmonize analyzes the surrounding image and the selected foreground layer, then generates a variation intended to make the subject look more cohesive with the background. Adobe describes the adjustments in terms of color, lighting, shadows, visual tone, and related scene details. The result is generated on a new layer, allowing the original subject layer to remain available for comparison or further editing.

This makes Harmonize potentially useful for product mockups, advertising layouts, social-media graphics, photography composites, and surreal artwork. Those are logical applications of Adobe’s documented workflow, not a guarantee that the feature will produce a finished professional composite without additional work.
How to use Harmonize in Photoshop desktop
- Open the image that will serve as the background.
- Use File > Place Embedded to add the person or object as a separate layer.
- Position and scale the subject in the scene.
- Remove the subject’s original background if necessary, using the selection and masking tools appropriate to the image.
- Select the subject’s pixel layer.
- Choose Harmonize from the Contextual Task Bar.
- Review the generated variation on its new layer and compare it with the original.
Adobe’s desktop documentation specifies that the selected subject must be on a pixel layer. Smart Objects, text layers, and adjustment layers are not supported directly by this workflow. If the content is in an unsupported layer type, prepare a suitable pixel-layer copy first. Keep the original editable layer whenever possible so you can return to it if the generated result damages an important edge or detail.

After Harmonize runs, inspect the subject at 100% magnification. You may still need to refine the mask, repair hair or fine object edges, add or reshape shadows, correct perspective, or apply manual color adjustments. If the scene has a strong directional light source, check whether the generated lighting agrees with it rather than assuming that the result is physically correct.
How to use Harmonize on the web
Photoshop on the web follows a similar process:
- Open or upload the background image.
- Add the object as a new layer.
- Remove the object’s background if needed.
- Select the pixel layer containing the object.
- Position the object in the scene.
- Choose Harmonize from the Contextual Task Bar.
Adobe lists Harmonize as available in both Photoshop desktop and Photoshop on the web. The web version is convenient for a straightforward composite, but it is not a complete replacement for desktop Photoshop. Adobe’s comparison information identifies desktop-only or limited web capabilities including Warp, Puppet Warp, some selection tools, Neural Filters, Smart Filters, and certain timeline functions. A composite that needs advanced distortion, complex masking, or extensive retouching may still need to be finished on desktop.

Generative Upscale creates the enlarged result in a new document rather than simply changing the dimensions of the existing file. You choose either 2x or 4x enlargement and then select an available model.

These descriptions represent Adobe’s product positioning, not an independent quality ranking. Firefly may be the logical first choice when restoration is the priority. Gigapixel is positioned toward retaining the character of existing detail, while Bloom is the more interpretive option when adding creative detail is acceptable. The best choice can vary with the subject, source quality, and tolerance for invented texture.
When Generative Upscale helps—and when to be cautious
Upscaling is useful when an image is too small for a print layout, a crop needs more working resolution, or an older image needs a cleaner presentation. It cannot recover information that was never captured with certainty. An enlarged face may look more polished without becoming more historically accurate; a logo may acquire altered edges; and tiny lettering can remain unreadable or become visually plausible but incorrect.
For that reason, inspect important areas separately after upscaling. Check eyes, teeth, fingers, jewelry, repeated patterns, signs, labels, and brand marks. If accuracy matters, retain the original file, compare the new document against it, and do not treat generated detail as documentary evidence.

Credits, subscriptions, and feature availability
Adobe classifies Harmonize as a standard generative feature and says that each generation consumes five generative credits. Firefly-powered Generative Upscale consumes more than one credit, with usage based on the output size. Topaz partner models are categorized as premium features. Consequently, there is no single reliable “cost per upscaled image” without specifying the model, output dimensions, subscription, and current Adobe credit rules.
Adobe says Creative Cloud Pro, Firefly, and credits plans provide unlimited access to standard generations, while premium features use credits according to the selected model, output, and file size. Check the current balance in your Adobe account or inside Photoshop before generating multiple variations. Adobe can change plan access, credit treatment, and model availability, so verify the current terms rather than relying on an older tutorial.
As of the current documentation used for this article, both tools are documented for Photoshop desktop and the web. Harmonize was also described as Early Access on iOS in the original July 2025 announcement, and Adobe’s later October 2025 update said Harmonize was available across desktop, mobile, and web. Availability can still depend on the installed version, account, region, plan, and staged feature rollout.
How much Photoshop costs
Adobe’s U.S. pricing page lists Photoshop at US$22.99 per month on an annual, billed-monthly plan, and the Photography plan at US$19.99 per month on an annual, billed-monthly plan. These are prices observed in the supplied research and should be rechecked before purchase because Adobe changes pricing and plan structures. Photoshop is also included in broader Creative Cloud plans.

If you need these tools, compare the plan’s generative-feature access—not only the headline subscription price. In particular, check whether the plan includes the standard generations you expect and how premium Topaz models are charged. Adobe’s product page also advertises a seven-day trial language for eligible Photoshop plans, but eligibility and terms should be confirmed at checkout.

A practical workflow for better results
For a Harmonize composite
- Start with a plausible source. Match camera angle, subject scale, and approximate light direction before asking AI to blend the layers.
- Make a clean cutout. Harmonize can adjust the appearance of a subject, but it is not a substitute for a carefully inspected mask.
- Keep the source layer. Work from a duplicate pixel layer so the untouched subject remains available.
- Run Harmonize once and inspect the variation. Look for changes to skin, product color, texture, and edges—not only the overall impression.
- Build the physical cues manually. Add contact shadows, reflected color, atmospheric haze, or perspective corrections where the scene requires them.
- Use the generated layer selectively. A layer mask or reduced opacity can let you retain the useful lighting adjustment without accepting every generated change.
For Generative Upscale
- Save the original. Generative Upscale creates a new document, but preserving the source gives you a reliable comparison.
- Choose 2x before 4x when possible. A smaller enlargement may introduce less invented detail and may be sufficient for the output size.
- Match the model to the goal. Start with Firefly for restoration, consider Gigapixel when preserving existing detail is most important, and use Bloom when creative reconstruction is acceptable.
- Review the important details. Zoom in on faces, text, logos, and repeating textures.
- Do not confuse sharpness with truth. A crisp result can still contain generated or altered information.
Learning the larger Photoshop workflow
Harmonize and Generative Upscale are easier to use effectively when you already understand layers, masks, selections, tonal correction, Camera Raw, and export settings. They do not unlock a replacement for those fundamentals; they shorten particular parts of the process.
For a structured reference, Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book 2026 is an official Adobe training-series title by Conrad Chavez with lessons covering Photoshop fundamentals, compositing, generative AI, Camera Raw, and export workflows. The book requires Photoshop 2026 software; the software is not included with the book.
For source material, designers can also look for suitable background and subject assets through licensed stock libraries, including Adobe Stock images. Stock assets can make the Harmonize workflow more practical, but licensing terms and the suitability of a particular image should be checked before commercial use.
Bottom line
Harmonize is an object-blending assistant: it analyzes a placed subject and generates a new variation that attempts to match the surrounding scene. Generative Upscale is a resolution tool: it enlarges an image at 2x or 4x using Firefly or, where available under premium access, Topaz Gigapixel or Topaz Bloom.
The important distinction is that Adobe is automating visual decisions, not eliminating them. Use Harmonize to accelerate the first compositing pass, use Upscale according to your tolerance for restored versus invented detail, and reserve time for masking, lighting, perspective, and accuracy checks.
