To make a shape in GIMP, create a selection, then fill or stroke it. Use Rectangle Select for rectangles and squares, Ellipse Select for circles, Free Select for polygons, and Paths for smooth custom curves. A transparent layer keeps the shape separate from the background, while GIMP 3.2 vector layers can preserve adjustable fill and stroke properties.
How to make shapes in GIMP
The quickest way to make a shape in GIMP is to create a selection, fill or stroke it, and then remove the selection. Use Rectangle Select for rectangles and squares, Ellipse Select for circles and ellipses, and Free Select for triangles, polygons, stars, and irregular shapes. For smooth curves, precise outlines, and reusable artwork, use the Paths tool. GIMP 3.2 also introduces vector layers for shapes whose fill and stroke properties need to remain adjustable.
These instructions apply to the established selection-and-path workflow documented for GIMP 3.0, which remains the documentation recommended by the GIMP team while the dedicated GIMP 3.2 manual is being prepared. The current release identified here is GIMP 3.2.4, released April 19, 2026. Some vector-layer labels and controls may differ slightly in your installed 3.2 build.

- Open an image or create one with File → New.
- Open the Layers dock if it is not visible.
- Create a new layer with Layer → New Layer.
- Give the layer a descriptive name, such as Blue circle or Arrow outline.
- Ensure the layer is transparent rather than filled with a background color.
A separate transparent layer lets you recolor, move, hide, or delete the shape without altering the original image. If you already painted on a layer with no transparency, use Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel before deleting unwanted background pixels.
Make a rectangle or square
A rectangle selection is only a boundary. It does not become visible until you fill or stroke it.
- Choose Tools → Selection Tools → Rectangle Select.
- Click and drag across the canvas to define the rectangle.
- Set the foreground color by clicking the foreground-color swatch in the toolbox.
- Fill the selection using the applicable fill command, or drag a color into the selected area with the Bucket Fill tool.
- Choose Select → None when you no longer want the selection active.
To make a perfect square, constrain the selection to a 1:1 aspect ratio. You can use the square-constraining modifier while dragging, or enable a fixed aspect ratio in the Rectangle Select tool options. The tool options also support fixed width, fixed height, exact size, centered expansion, guides, and rounded corners.
Recommended Free Tools
Make a rounded rectangle
Select Rectangle Select, enable Rounded corners in the tool options, and adjust the radius before filling the selection. Alternatively, create an ordinary rectangular selection and use Select → Rounded Rectangle to convert it into a rounded-corner selection.
Make a circle or ellipse
- Choose Tools → Selection Tools → Ellipse Select.
- Click and drag on the canvas to define the ellipse.
- Constrain the selection to a 1:1 aspect ratio if you need a true circle.
- Fill the selection with a color, pattern, or gradient.
- Choose Select → None after finishing.
If the result looks slightly oval, check the selection’s width and height in the tool options. They must match for a circle. Creating the circle on its own transparent layer also makes it easier to resize or reposition without damaging the background.
Fill a shape with a color, pattern, or gradient
Once a selection is active, the selected area can be filled in several ways:
- Foreground or background color: use the corresponding fill command or keyboard shortcut shown by your GIMP installation.
- Pattern: choose a pattern in the Bucket Fill tool options and fill the selection.
- Gradient: choose the Gradient tool and drag across the active selection. The gradient remains clipped to the selected shape.
- Paint tools: brush or paint inside the selection; GIMP prevents painting outside its boundary.
The selection acts as a temporary mask. It defines where the operation can occur, but it is not itself a painted object.

Make triangles, polygons, stars, and irregular shapes
Use Free Select, also called the polygonal or lasso selection tool, for shapes made from straight edges.
- Choose Tools → Selection Tools → Free Select.
- Click each corner or vertex of the shape in sequence.
- Close the selection by clicking the starting point or confirming the selection.
- Fill or stroke the resulting selection.
- Choose Select → None when finished.
This works well for triangles, arrows, diamonds, simple stars, speech bubbles, and custom polygonal icons. For a compound shape such as a more complex star, use the selection-mode controls to add to or subtract from the current selection. You can combine several simple selections instead of trying to draw every edge in one pass.
Make a custom curved shape with Paths
The Paths tool is the better choice when a shape needs smooth curves, accurate control points, a clean outline, or future editing. A path is made from Bézier curves and does not alter image pixels until you fill or stroke it.
- Choose Tools → Paths, or press B.
- In Design mode, click to place anchor points around the shape.
- Click and drag an anchor point or its handles to bend a segment into a curve.
- Continue placing points until the outline is complete.
- Close the path for a predictable filled shape.
- Choose the required output: create a selection, fill the path, or stroke the path.
Three ways to use a path
- Create Selection from Path: converts the closed path into a pixel selection. You can then fill, paint, mask, or modify it like any other selection.
- Fill Path: fills the enclosed area directly with a foreground color, background color, or pattern.
- Stroke Path: draws an outline along the path on the active layer.
An open path is suitable for an outline and can be stroked. For a filled custom shape, close the path first. If you ask GIMP to fill an unclosed path, it attempts to infer a closed region, which can produce an unexpected result.
Control the path outline
Stroke Path gives you more control than simply painting a freehand line. Depending on the selected options, you can set the line width, color or pattern, antialiasing, cap style, join style, and whether GIMP uses a paint tool to render the stroke.
- Cap styles: butt, round, and square caps control the ends of open strokes.
- Join styles: miter, round, and bevel joins control how corners meet.
- Antialiasing: smooths angled and curved edges and helps reduce jagged outlines.
Use a selection to create an outline or border
To make an outline around a rectangle, circle, or polygon, stroke the selection instead of filling it:
- Create the shape with Rectangle Select, Ellipse Select, or Free Select.
- Choose the stroke-selection command, commonly found under Edit → Stroke Selection.
- Set the line width, color, dash pattern, and antialiasing options.
- Confirm the stroke.
- Clear the selection with Select → None.
For a filled shape with a border, fill the selection first and stroke it afterward. Put the fill and border on separate layers if you expect to edit them independently.

GIMP 3.2 vector layers: keep shape properties editable
GIMP 3.2 adds vector layers and allows the Paths tool to create vector layers with adjustable fill and stroke settings. This is the most suitable approach when you want a shape’s fill and outline to remain properties that can be adjusted rather than immediately rendering the shape as raster pixels.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Because the dedicated GIMP 3.2 manual was not yet available when the release information was published, exact menu labels and control locations can vary by installed build. If your version exposes the vector-layer option through the Paths workflow, use it for logos, interface elements, diagrams, and other graphics that may need repeated changes. If you cannot find it, use the established path-to-selection, Fill Path, and Stroke Path workflow instead.
Selection, path, or vector layer?
| Choose | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Selection | Quick raster shapes, one-off graphics, filled backgrounds, and simple icons | Once filled, the result is pixel-based and less convenient to reshape |
| Path | Clean curves, accurate outlines, reusable geometry, and conversion between paths and selections | Requires more setup than dragging a basic selection |
| Vector layer | Adjustable fill and stroke properties in GIMP 3.2 | Newer feature; controls and documentation may vary by build |
GIMP supports conversion in both directions: selections can become paths, and closed paths can become selections. A practical workflow is to sketch or select quickly, convert to a path when precision matters, and render the final result only when you are ready.
Optional hardware for hand-drawn shapes
You do not need special hardware to make rectangles, circles, or polygons. A mouse is sufficient for all of those workflows. If you regularly draw custom curves, brush-based outlines, or pressure-sensitive artwork, however, a drawing tablet for GIMP can provide more natural pen control than a mouse. GIMP supports drawing-tablet input, and pressure sensitivity is particularly useful with paint tools.
A Wacom Intuos pen tablet is one example of a pressure-sensitive, battery-free pen tablet intended for drawing, painting, and photo editing. Check the tablet’s current operating-system compatibility and driver support before buying; compatibility with a tablet does not mean every GIMP tool will use pressure in the same way.
For existing tablet owners who use their device frequently, Wacom Intuos replacement nibs are a practical accessory to consider when the original pen tip wears down. They are not needed for the basic shape methods in this guide.
Save shapes so they remain editable
Keep major shapes on separate layers and save the working file in GIMP’s native XCF format. XCF preserves layers and more of the editable construction than a flattened export. When the image is ready for delivery, export a copy as PNG, JPEG, or another required format.

Use PNG when you need transparency around the shape. JPEG does not preserve transparency and is usually a poor choice for a shape that must sit cleanly over another background. Exporting creates a delivery copy; continue using the XCF file for future edits.

The shape is invisible
A selection is only a boundary until it is filled, painted, or stroked. Check that the correct layer is active, the layer eye is enabled, the layer is not hidden below an opaque layer, and the selection still exists before filling it. Also verify that the foreground color is not the same as the layer or background.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The shape has a solid rectangle behind it
You probably created it on an opaque background layer. Create a new transparent layer before making the shape, or add an alpha channel and remove the unwanted pixels. When transparency is required, export to a format such as PNG that supports it.
The circle is slightly oval
Constrain the Ellipse Select tool to a 1:1 aspect ratio, or enter matching width and height values in the tool options. Do not rely only on estimating the drag distance by eye.
Polygon edges look jagged
Enable antialiasing where it is available, work at a higher resolution, or construct the shape with the Paths tool and render an antialiased fill or stroke. Jagged edges are especially noticeable on small, angled shapes after reduction.
The outline is too thick or the corners look wrong
Reduce the stroke width and review the cap and join settings. Round joins soften corners, bevel joins cut them off, and miter joins preserve sharp corners but can extend farther at acute angles. For open paths, compare butt, round, and square caps.

Undo immediately, then confirm that the intended layer is active and that the selection is correct. To select the visible opaque portions of a layer, use Layer → Transparency → Alpha to Selection. This selects opaque and partially transparent pixels while leaving transparent areas unselected.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a perfect square in GIMP?
Choose Tools → Selection Tools → Rectangle Select, then drag while constraining the selection to a 1:1 aspect ratio. Fill the selection on a transparent layer to produce the square.
How do I make a perfect circle in GIMP?
Choose Ellipse Select, constrain the width and height to a 1:1 aspect ratio, and fill the selection. Matching width and height prevents an oval result.
How do I outline a shape in GIMP?
Create the shape selection, then use the stroke-selection command, commonly Edit → Stroke Selection. Set the width and color before confirming.
Is the Paths tool better than a selection for custom shapes?
Use the Paths tool to place and adjust Bézier anchor points, close the path, and choose Create Selection from Path, Fill Path, or Stroke Path. Paths are preferable for smooth curves and precise outlines.
Why does my GIMP shape have a background rectangle?
Create the shape on a new transparent layer, or add an alpha channel before removing unwanted background pixels. An opaque layer is what usually creates the rectangular background.
The Bottom Line
For most quick shapes, create a transparent layer, make a Rectangle, Ellipse, or Free Select selection, and fill or stroke it. Switch to Paths for smooth, precise, reusable curves, and consider GIMP 3.2 vector layers when adjustable fill and stroke properties are important. Save the layered result as XCF and export a separate final copy.
