Use Microsoft Photos for quick handwritten annotations on a photo, and Microsoft Clipchamp for typed text, titles, captions, and credits in a video. The old Photos Video Editor is no longer the standard video-editing path, so current Windows 10 instructions should use Clipchamp instead.
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. The steps below still apply to compatible installations of Photos and Clipchamp, but Windows 10 should not be treated as a version that continues to receive normal security and feature updates.
Choose the right tool first
| What you want to do | Recommended tool | What it is best for |
|---|---|---|
| Write or draw directly on a still photo | Microsoft Photos | Handwritten labels, arrows, signatures, highlights, and short callouts |
| Add a typed caption or designed title to a photo | PowerPoint, Word, or Excel | Text boxes, WordArt, custom fonts, and deliberate layouts |
| Add text to a video | Microsoft Clipchamp | Opening titles, labels, callouts, manual captions, and end credits |
Microsoft Photos’ current Markup tool is primarily a pen-and-highlighter annotation feature. Do not expect every Windows 10 installation to provide a conventional, movable typed-text box in Photos. For designed typed text on a photo, use an Office application or another image editor.

How to add writing to a photo with Microsoft Photos
- Open the Windows taskbar search box, type Photos, and open the Microsoft Photos app.
- Select the photo you want to annotate.
- Select Edit image.
- Open the Markup tools.
- Choose a pen or highlighter, then select an available color and line size.
- Write or draw directly on the image. You can add an arrow, circle an object, mark an area, or write a short note.
- If you make a mistake, use the eraser. If you want to remove all annotations, choose Clear all markup.
- Save the result as a copy when Photos offers that option. This keeps the untouched original available.
What Photos Markup is—and is not
Markup is useful when the text can be handwritten or drawn. It works well for a painting photograph that needs an arrow pointing to a detail, a quick signature, a color note, or a simple inspection mark.
It is not the best tool for a polished headline such as “Blue Landscape Study” in a particular font. The cited Microsoft workflow documents drawing with pens and a highlighter, not a universal typed text box. If you need editable, typeset text, use the Office method below.
How to put typed text on a photo with Word or PowerPoint
Microsoft Office can place a text box or WordArt over an inserted picture. This creates a composed slide or document that you can export as an image; it does not edit the original photo file in place.
- Open PowerPoint, Word, or Excel.
- Insert the photograph using the application’s picture-insertion command.
- Insert a Text Box or WordArt.
- Type the caption, title, label, or other wording.
- Drag the text over the photograph and adjust its size, font, alignment, and color.
- When appropriate, remove the text box’s fill and outline so only the lettering remains visible.
- Position the text where it is readable without hiding the important part of the image.
- If you used separate objects, group the picture and text so they move together.
- Export or save the finished composition as an image using the Office application’s export or save-as-image option.
This approach is preferable when you need a custom font, a neatly aligned title, a colored text panel, or multiple labels. PowerPoint is often convenient for a poster-like composition because it gives you a freeform canvas; Word can be more convenient when the image is part of a document.

How to add text to a video in Windows 10 with Clipchamp
Use Clipchamp for actual video overlays. You can use it for an opening title, a lower-third name label, a short explanation, a manually typed caption, or closing credits.
- Open Clipchamp from Windows search. If the app is unavailable, open the Clipchamp web editor in Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome.
- Create a new video project.
- Import your video through the media area. In some Photos workflows, you can also start with a video in Photos and choose the option to edit it in Clipchamp.
- Drag the video to the timeline, or use the available add control.
- Select the Text tab on the toolbar.
- Browse the available text and title styles.
- Drag a title or text asset onto the timeline above the video, or select its add button.
- Select the text asset. In the property panel, open the Text tab.
- Replace the sample wording with your own text.
- Adjust the controls provided by that title style, such as font, size, alignment, text color, and, where available, background color.
- Preview the video to check both readability and timing.
- Select Export and choose an output resolution.
Clipchamp’s available controls can vary by title style and by whether you are using a personal or work version. If a particular title does not offer a setting such as background color or animation, try another title style rather than assuming the control is hidden.

Control when the text appears
Text timing is controlled by the text asset on the timeline, not just by the wording in the property panel.
- Select the text or title asset above the video track.
- Drag it left or right to change the point at which it begins.
- Drag its left or right edge to shorten or extend its duration.
- Play the section again and make sure viewers have enough time to read it.
If text disappears too soon, select the asset and extend its right edge. For a short title, leave it on screen long enough to read comfortably; for a longer explanation, either extend the duration or split the wording into shorter, separately timed overlays.
Use Clipchamp text for titles, labels, captions, and credits
Opening titles
Place a title asset at the beginning of the timeline. A short title and subtitle are usually easier to read than a paragraph of information. For a painting video, an opening title might identify the artwork, location, or technique.
Lower-third labels and callouts
Use a text asset above the relevant portion of the video to identify a person, material, location, or painting step. Keep the label away from busy edges and important details. If the selected style supports a background or semi-transparent block, it can separate the words from a detailed image.
Manual captions
You can type spoken words or explanatory notes into text assets and time them manually. This is different from automatically generated subtitles. The documented workflow establishes manual text and title assets; automatic speech-to-text captioning should not be assumed for every Clipchamp account, version, or Windows 10 installation.
Closing credits
- Open the Clipchamp Text tab.
- Choose the credits roll title.
- Place it above the video near the end of the timeline.
- Select the title and edit the wording in the Text panel.
- Change the speed of the roll by changing the length of the title asset on the timeline. A longer asset makes the roll slower; a shorter one makes it faster.
Preview the credits from their beginning to their end. If names or contact details move too quickly to read, extend the asset and, if necessary, simplify the wording.

Make overlay text readable
- Use contrast: Light text needs a dark background, while dark text needs a light area behind it.
- Avoid busy areas: Do not place lettering over complex brushwork, foliage, faces, or other high-detail parts of the frame unless the style provides a suitable background.
- Keep lines short: Break a long explanation into two or more timed overlays instead of creating a dense block.
- Check the preview: Text that looks readable while editing may be difficult to see once the video is playing at its intended size.
- Respect safe placement: Keep important words away from the extreme edges, where cropping or playback controls may obscure them.
Export the finished video and protect the source files
When the text, timing, and formatting are correct, select Export in Clipchamp and choose a quality setting. Let the export finish before closing the project, then play the exported file—not only the timeline preview—to check that the overlay appears correctly.
Keep the original video, photographs, and any other imported media until the project is complete and backed up. Clipchamp projects can depend on the original source files, particularly in cloud-connected workflows. If a source file is moved, renamed, deleted, or stored on a disconnected drive, the project may later need to relink to it.
For a photo composition made in Word or PowerPoint, save the editable Office file as well as the exported image. The editable file lets you correct a spelling error or reposition the title without rebuilding the design.
What happened to Windows 10 Photos Video Editor?
Older tutorials often say to open Photos, choose Video Editor, add clips to a storyboard, and then insert text. That is a legacy workflow. Current Microsoft Photos versions no longer include the previous Photos Video Editor as the default option, and Microsoft recommends Clipchamp for advanced video editing.
Some installations may still have Photos Legacy. Microsoft says that version includes a video editor, slideshow creator, and album maker, but its availability depends on the installation and app state. It should be treated as a compatibility or legacy possibility, not as the universal Windows 10 route.
Why Paint 3D is not the current recommendation
Paint 3D should not be the primary recommendation in a current Windows 10 guide. Microsoft deprecated Paint 3D in August 2024 and removed it from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024. An existing installation may continue to work, but someone who uninstalls it should not rely on the Store for a new installation. For basic 2D work, Microsoft identifies Paint and Photos as alternatives.

Troubleshooting
Clipchamp is missing
Try the Clipchamp web editor in Edge or Chrome. You can also check whether the official Clipchamp app is available for that Windows 10 device. The exact app and feature availability can depend on the device, Windows edition, account type, and current Clipchamp version.
The old Video Editor button is missing from Photos
This is expected in current Photos versions. Use Clipchamp for video text and other timeline-based editing. Photos Markup remains the simpler choice for drawing on still images.

An iPhone photo or video will not open
iPhones may produce HEIF images or HEVC videos. Microsoft says these files may require the HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions, or conversion during transfer. Store pricing and availability for extensions can change, so check the Microsoft Store listing on the affected computer rather than relying on an old quoted price.
You use Windows 10 N
Windows 10 N editions omit certain media technologies. Microsoft says media features may be unavailable without the Media Feature Pack and that the old Video Editor does not work on N editions. Check Clipchamp compatibility separately for the particular edition and app version; installing the Media Feature Pack does not automatically guarantee that every Clipchamp issue will be resolved.
The text is difficult to read
Change to a more contrasting color, choose a title style with a background or semi-transparent block when available, and move the text to a visually simpler part of the image. Increasing the font size may help, but contrast and placement usually matter just as much.
The text vanishes too quickly
Select the text asset on the Clipchamp timeline and drag its right edge farther to the right. If the overlay starts late, move the entire asset left or extend its left edge as appropriate.

When the built-in tools are enough—and when they are not
Photos Markup is enough for a quick handwritten note. Office is a practical choice for a still image with a designed, typed title. Clipchamp is the current Microsoft workflow for ordinary video overlays and credits.
You may need a more specialized editor if you require advanced animated typography, complex subtitle automation, precise tracking of text to moving objects, or extensive caption formatting. Those are separate requirements from simply adding a title asset, and feature availability should be checked for the particular software and account before starting a large project.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add a typed text box directly in Windows 10 Photos?
The current Photos Markup documentation describes drawing with pens and a highlighter rather than a universal movable typed-text box. For typed text on a photo, use a text box or WordArt in PowerPoint, Word, or Excel, then export the composition as an image.
Why can’t I find Video Editor in Photos?
The previous Photos Video Editor is no longer included in current Photos versions. Microsoft recommends Clipchamp for video editing, including titles and other text overlays.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can Clipchamp automatically create captions?
Do not assume that automatic speech-to-text captions are available in every Clipchamp account or version. The workflow covered here uses manually added text and title assets; verify caption features in the exact Clipchamp installation you use.
Will adding text overwrite my original photo?
Photos may offer the option to save the edited result as a copy. Choose that option when available. For Office compositions, keep both the original photo and the editable Office file in addition to the exported image.
The Bottom Line
For Windows 10, use Photos Markup for handwritten notes on a still image, PowerPoint or Word for polished typed text on a photo, and Clipchamp for video titles, labels, manual captions, and credits. Keep your original media and editable project files until the exported result has been checked.
