You can make a Necronomicon-style horror book prop by decorating an existing hardcover: mark a cover design, build raised details with hot glue, cover them with tissue paper and white school glue, then paint the surface in brown tones. If you want a box, replica pages, or a film-specific finished replica instead, those are different project paths—not steps in this basic book-cover method.

Choose the kind of prop you want
| Project path | What you get | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Decorate an existing hardcover | A book with a raised, textured cover. | The documented tutorial focuses on the cover; it does not explain how to make new interior pages or rebuild the binding. |
| Make a book-box | A storage or display box dressed to look like a book. | Alchemy Art describes its kit as an unfinished wooden box with craft materials, not a bound book. |
| Add replica pages | A small set of printed pages for an insert or display. | The H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society lists four page faces, not a complete book. |
| Buy a finished replica | A completed prop based on a specific film design. | Sideshow’s listing describes a Trick or Treat Studios and StudioCanal Evil Dead II replica with a latex cover and 36 printed pages. Price and availability can change. |
These descriptions come from tutorials and product listings, not independent testing. Choose based on whether you need a book that opens, a box, extra pages, or a particular licensed design.
Materials for a decorated hardcover
- An old hardcover book
- A marker for sketching the cover design
- A hot-glue gun and glue
- White school glue
- Tissue paper
- A foam brush and a paintbrush
- Scissors
- Two shades of brown paint
- Optional ashes or flour, listed by the tutorial but not explained there as a specific aging technique
If a glue gun is difficult to control, the tutorial author suggests puffy paint as an alternative for raised detail. Let it dry fully before adding the paper layer. The tutorial author, Amber Reifsteck of The Woodland Elf, summarizes the approach this way: “An old book and a hot glue gun can get you a nice creepy DIY necronomicon.”

How to make the cover
- Choose a hardcover. Pick an old book that suits the display or costume. The source tutorial does not specify a recommended size or condition.
- Mark the cover motif. Sketch or mark the main design. The tutorial uses a face inspired by the Evil Dead book.
- Build raised details. Trace the design with hot glue. If using puffy paint instead, let it dry fully before continuing.
- Add the textured layer. Use a foam brush and white school glue to layer tissue paper over the raised design, creating a leathery-looking surface.
- Paint the cover. Paint with two shades of brown. The tutorial lists both shades but does not specify a detailed paint order.
- Let the materials dry as needed. Follow the product instructions for the materials you use. The source does not provide a timed project schedule.
This is a summary of an authored tutorial, not a controlled test. It does not establish a guaranteed duration, tested durability, or a particular finish result.
Optional pages and other versions
If the prop needs visible interior material, replica pages can be used as inserts or display pages. The H. P. Lovecraft Historical Society describes its offering as two double-sided pages—four page faces—printed on similar paper and hand-aged. That is a page set, not a complete volume.

A book-box is another option when storage or display matters more than having a working book. Alchemy Art describes a DIY kit based on an unfinished wooden box, with paper mache, Mod Podge, brushes, a sculpting tool, glue, and acrylic paints. Its listing gives dimensions of 9.75 × 7.5 × 2.88 inches; check the current listing for availability and details.
For a ready-made, film-specific alternative, Sideshow describes the Trick or Treat Studios and StudioCanal Evil Dead II Book of the Dead replica as opening and closing, with a latex cast cover and 36 printed pages. The listing showed a $120 preorder and an estimated October–December 2026 ship window when checked on October 7, 2026. These are listing details, not stable prices or guarantees of current stock.
