No—but the old Affinity Suite is over. Serif’s separately sold Affinity Designer, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher are no longer the products being offered to new customers. Canva acquired Affinity in March 2024, then launched a redesigned, unified Affinity application on October 29, 2025. It combines vector design, pixel/photo editing, and page-layout tools in one app and is currently presented as free for everyone.
What actually ended?
The phrase “Affinity Suite no longer for sale” is accurate if it refers to the previous retail model. New customers can no longer buy the old three-application bundle or purchase the legacy Designer, Photo, and Publisher products as separate Serif-era applications.
That is a retail discontinuation and product consolidation, not a shutdown of Affinity. Canva has replaced the old product family with a single application that brings together the main functions of the three predecessors:
- Vector tools associated with Affinity Designer
- Pixel and photo-editing tools associated with Affinity Photo
- Layout and publishing tools associated with Affinity Publisher
Canva announced the acquisition of Affinity on March 26, 2024. The company described Affinity as a professional design platform and said it intended to continue investing in it rather than make it disappear. Canva’s acquisition announcement provides that original context.

The transition from Serif to Canva
There are three different changes being confused under the phrase “Affinity is gone.” They should be separated:
| What changed | What it means |
|---|---|
| Ownership | Affinity is no longer an independent Serif-era business; Canva owns it. |
| Products | Designer, Photo, and Publisher have been consolidated into one current Affinity application. |
| Pricing and distribution | The old one-time-purchase retail path has been replaced by a free Affinity app activated through Canva’s account system. |
In March 2024, Canva and Affinity publicly said that Affinity would remain a standalone professional suite, that development would continue, and that perpetual licensing would remain available with any subscription being optional. That statement is important historical context, but it should not be read as a promise that the old three-app product line would remain on sale forever. The later product launch changed the direction of the product. The original Affinity and Canva pledge predates the 2025 relaunch.
A short timeline
- March 26, 2024: Canva announced its acquisition of Affinity.
- March 2024: Canva and Affinity said they would continue investing in the product and preserve perpetual licensing as part of the then-current model.
- September 2025: The older applications were removed from sale during the transition to the redesigned product.
- October 29, 2025: Canva launched the all-new unified Affinity application and announced that it was free for everyone, forever.
- 2026: Affinity operates within Canva’s account, terms, privacy, and AI framework.
The decisive event is therefore not the removal of the old installers from a store. It is the October 2025 launch: Affinity survived, but in a different form and under a different business model. Canva’s launch announcement describes the unified application and its intended relationship with Canva.

According to Canva’s launch announcement, the core Affinity experience is completely free. That means the basic vector, pixel, and layout capabilities are not presented as a trial, a cut-down reader, or a product that requires a recurring payment to keep using.
However, “free Affinity” does not mean that every Canva-connected service is free. Canva separately promotes premium AI and platform features. The launch announcement says Canva premium-account holders can access Canva AI tools inside Affinity through Canva AI Studio, with examples including Generative Fill, Expand & Edit, and Remove Background. Those connected capabilities should be treated separately from the free core editor. Canva’s explanation of the free model describes the company’s stated strategy: keep core products accessible while monetizing premium content, collaboration, and AI-powered tools.
In practical terms:
- You should not need to subscribe merely to use the basic Affinity application.
- Some AI, collaboration, publishing, or Canva-platform functions may depend on a premium Canva account or connected service.
- Canva’s “free forever” language is a current corporate commitment and product position, not proof that every future integration or optional feature will remain free.
If you are interested specifically in Canva-connected AI, collaboration, or publishing, Canva Pro or Canva Teams may be worth investigating separately. They are not a prerequisite for the basic Affinity workflow described by Canva.

What does this mean for digital painters?
For a painter, the most important question is not whether the old product names remain available. It is whether the new application still fits the way you work.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The unified structure could be useful for mixed projects. You may be able to move from vector construction to pixel painting, retouching, and page composition without switching among three separate applications. That is potentially convenient for illustrators who sketch or paint artwork, build vector lettering or symbols, and then prepare a print layout or presentation.
A pressure-sensitive drawing tablet is still the relevant hardware category for artists who rely on brush pressure, pen input, or retouching rather than mouse-only editing. It is an optional workflow improvement, not something every Affinity user needs. If you already own a compatible tablet, there is no reason to replace it solely because the product has been consolidated; verify the current application’s device and operating-system support before buying new hardware.
The main advantage for new painters is cost: there is no longer a purchase decision between Designer, Photo, and Publisher just to assemble a complete desktop design toolkit. Students, hobbyists, freelancers, and small studios can try the current application without committing to the old three-product price.
There are also trade-offs. Artists who chose Affinity precisely because it was independent, desktop-focused, and sold through perpetual licenses may reasonably regard the Canva transition as a loss even if the software itself continues. The new product may be free, but the relationship with the vendor now includes a Canva account and optional cloud-connected services.
What happens to people who already own Affinity V2?
Existing V2 owners should not assume that their paid licenses have simply vanished. Earlier official communications said that users could continue using the applications they had purchased and that perpetual licensing would remain part of the model.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
That statement was made before the 2025 relaunch, so it should be handled carefully. It does not establish that the old V2 applications will receive a particular number of future updates, gain every feature from the new Affinity, or remain compatible with every future operating-system release.
The safest distinction is:
- Ownership and access: a previously purchased license is a separate issue from the new product’s sales model.
- Future development: Canva’s current emphasis is the unified Affinity application, not continued retail development of three separate legacy apps.
- Migration: do not assume that every old document, feature, plug-in, workflow, or interface will transfer perfectly without checking.
The older V1 products had already stopped being offered for new purchase before the Canva transition. That history illustrates an important point: a product can disappear from sale while existing owners continue to use what they bought. An Affinity forum discussion records that earlier distinction between retail availability and continued use. The discussion about V2 payment and legacy access should be read as historical context rather than a guarantee of indefinite support.
A sensible checklist for V2 owners
- Keep installers for the versions you rely on, where your license and account arrangements permit it.
- Save proof of purchase, license information, and account-recovery details in a secure location.
- Back up working files in more than one location, including important linked assets and fonts.
- Install and evaluate the new Affinity separately before removing a working V2 setup.
- Open representative projects: paintings, large canvases, layered files, exports, and any files containing unusual brushes or effects.
- Compare the new workflow with your production requirements before moving an active client project.
This is not a claim that V2 will stop working on a specific date. It is basic continuity planning for anyone whose income or archive depends on older software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs Affinity becoming Canva?
Affinity remains a distinct professional design product, but it is no longer independent from Canva. Canva controls the ownership, distribution, account activation, integrations, and commercial strategy. The new app is also designed to connect with Canva’s wider ecosystem, including the ability to export Affinity projects into Canva.
That integration may be valuable if your work moves from detailed illustration into social graphics, presentations, marketing materials, team review, or online publishing. Canva’s resources may also give Affinity a larger distribution network and more funding for development. The company says its team continues to build Affinity with Canva’s financial and organizational support.
For a solo painter who creates finished work locally and exports flattened files, those integrations may not matter. For a studio or creative team, they may reduce handoffs. The correct choice depends on whether Canva’s account and collaboration ecosystem solve a real problem in your workflow.

Canva has also announced free access programs for eligible teachers, schools, and nonprofits. Organizations should check the current eligibility requirements rather than assume that every educational or charitable account qualifies. Canva’s education and nonprofit announcement gives the relevant background.
Privacy, accounts, and AI
The Canva connection deserves attention if you work with confidential commissions, unreleased commercial art, or client-owned material.
Canva says Affinity stores work locally on the user’s device and that Affinity content is not used to train or develop Canva’s AI features, including content created with Canva AI tools inside Affinity. Canva’s broader AI and account policies also describe controls around the use of content to improve AI-powered features.
Those are current policy statements, not a substitute for reviewing the terms for your particular account. The practical distinction is between:
- Local editing: working on files within the Affinity application on your device.
- Optional connected activity: exporting to Canva, uploading work, collaborating through Canva, or sending content to an AI-powered service.
Do not treat those activities as identical. Before placing confidential client work into a connected feature, review the current Affinity terms, Canva terms, account settings, and any organizational data policy. Canva’s Affinity-specific terms were updated on March 12, 2026, so older articles may not describe the current legal or usage conditions. Read the current Affinity additional terms before making a policy decision.

Should new users choose Affinity?
For someone starting now, the answer is straightforward: try the current unified Affinity rather than searching for the old three-app bundle. The old retail products are no longer the normal route for a new purchase, while the current application is available without a required recurring payment for its core experience.
It is especially worth considering if you want:
- A professional-oriented desktop design application without an upfront purchase for the core product
- Vector, pixel, and layout tools in one workspace
- A workflow that can remain primarily local
- An alternative to software that requires a subscription for basic editing
Look elsewhere or test carefully first if you require a specific legacy feature, established V2 automation, a particular plug-in, a fixed offline deployment policy, or a workflow that cannot tolerate account changes. Do not make that decision from the product name alone. Open real project files and confirm the current application meets your requirements.
Is this the end of professional Affinity?
The evidence supports four conclusions:
- Yes, it is the end of the old Affinity Suite as a separately purchased trio of Serif applications.
- No, it is not the end of Affinity as a product or brand. Canva launched a new unified Affinity application and continues to present it as a professional design tool.
- Yes, it is the end of Affinity’s original independent business identity. The product is now owned and distributed by Canva and is tied to Canva’s account and platform strategy.
- The long-term details remain open. The free core, unified workspace, Canva integration, and current privacy statements are documented. The future of legacy V2 updates, the exact limits of future premium functions, and the durability of every current promise should be monitored rather than guessed.
There is no evidence here to claim that Affinity has been permanently discontinued. There is equally no basis for promising that the old V2 product line will receive indefinite development or that every previous feature will migrate unchanged.

Do I need Canva Pro to use Affinity?
No recurring payment is required for the core Affinity experience according to Canva’s launch announcement. Canva premium access is associated with additional Canva AI and platform-connected capabilities, so those extras should be evaluated separately.
Can existing Affinity V2 owners continue using their software?
Earlier official communications said existing users could continue using apps they had purchased. That does not guarantee indefinite updates, future operating-system compatibility, or automatic migration of every V2 feature. Preserve installers, license information, and project backups before changing a working setup.
Does the new Affinity replace Designer, Photo, and Publisher?
It replaces them as the current product direction for new users by combining vector, pixel, and layout capabilities in one application. It should not be assumed that every legacy feature or workflow has migrated perfectly without testing.
Is Affinity available on iPad?
At the October 2025 launch, Canva announced Mac and Windows availability and said iPad availability was coming soon. Because platform support can change, check Canva’s current Affinity download information before choosing an iPad-based workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is Affinity still independent from Canva?
No. Affinity remains a distinct product and brand, but Canva owns it and controls its distribution, account activation, integrations, and commercial strategy.
The Bottom Line
Affinity is not dead; it has been absorbed, consolidated, and repositioned. The old Designer–Photo–Publisher retail model is finished, but its successor is a unified Affinity application that Canva currently offers free for everyone. New users should try the current app. Existing V2 users should preserve their installers and archives, test representative projects, and treat the future of legacy support as unresolved rather than guaranteed.
