Affinity V2.5.3 was a June 24, 2024 maintenance release for the separate Photo 2, Designer 2, and Publisher 2 applications. It brought bug fixes and stability improvements to the 2.5 series; it did not introduce every headline feature associated with V2.5. Serif says the V2 apps remain usable but will not receive future updates, while the current Affinity app is a separate combined product.
This guide explains what the legacy V2 applications were for, what 2.5.3 means, and what to know before choosing between V2 and the current app or moving files between them.
Current status: V2 is a legacy product line
The current Affinity app combines vector, pixel, and page-layout capabilities in one product. Serif describes it as free for individuals, with a free Canva account required; Canva premium plans unlock optional Canva AI tools. These terms apply to the current app, not to V2.5.3. Check the current Affinity product information before installing, since platform availability can change.
Serif says existing V2 licenses remain valid and its activation servers will remain online, but the V2 apps will not receive future updates. The current app can open V1 and V2 files. V1 and V2 apps cannot open new .af files created in the current app. If you need to preserve a V2 workflow or hand files to someone using V2, check file compatibility before moving a project.

What Affinity V2.5.3 was
V2.5.3 was a maintenance point release in the V2.5 series, not a separate fourth application or subscription tier. The three applications served different kinds of work:

The Designer history lists 2.5.7 in December 2024 and 2.6.0 in February 2025, so 2.5.3 was not the latest V2 release.

Some features commonly associated with version 2.5 belonged to the broader V2.5 generation, not specifically to the 2.5.3 maintenance patch. The documented feature lists also differ by application, so do not assume every feature was identical across all three apps.

Variable-font support lets compatible fonts provide adjustable design axes. Publisher’s QR Code Tool creates codes for uses such as linking to a web page. DWG polyline-import improvements are relevant when bringing technical or architectural line work into a design. These are V2.5-generation features, not claims that 2.5.3 introduced them.

Photo 2: raster and photo editing
Photo 2 is the V2 application for raster image editing and photography workflows. It is also a fit for digital painting, texture creation, scan cleanup, and image compositing when the work depends on pixels, brush marks, or photographic detail. Choose a raster workflow for flexible pixel-level editing; choose Designer when you need clean, scalable vector curves.
Designer 2: vector design and illustration
Designer 2 is the V2 application for vector graphics and illustration. Vector workflows are useful for curves, shapes, logos, lettering, and artwork that needs to scale cleanly. For work that mixes painterly texture with crisp vector elements, Photo and Designer can complement one another.

Publisher 2: page layout
Publisher 2 is the V2 application for arranging text and visual elements into publications and other multi-page designs. The original V2 suite described StudioLink as a way to reach Designer and Photo tools from inside Publisher. Verify the installed applications and version when relying on that workflow.
Working across the three V2 applications
- Prepare raster assets in Photo. Edit photographs, clean scans, or create pixel-based artwork.
- Create vector assets in Designer. Draw shapes, curves, and illustrations that need to scale.
- Assemble the document in Publisher. Arrange text and assets into pages for a publication or other multi-page design.
- Check the handoff. Confirm fonts, placed resources, export settings, and the final output in the software and on the device that will receive it.
V2 licensing and the current app
Do not assume V2 and the current Affinity app share the same account, price, or activation terms. Serif says existing V2 licenses remain valid and activation servers will remain online, while V2 apps will not receive future updates. For questions about an existing license, refer to Serif’s V2 support information. The current app is a separate combined product; its free-for-individuals description and optional Canva AI features do not change the V2 license terms.
File compatibility and platform checks
Before moving a project between V2 and the current app, check which direction the file is moving. The current app can open V1 and V2 files, but V1 and V2 apps cannot open new .af files created in the current app. A current-app project that must remain editable in V2 therefore needs a compatible handoff plan.

- Back up the source. Keep a copy of the native file and its placed resources before converting or updating anything.
- Test a duplicate. Open a copy and check layout, fonts, images, vector geometry, and effects.
- Preserve a verified export. Keep a checked PDF or image for print, client delivery, or archiving.
- Confirm the recipient’s needs. Ask which app and file format they can open before sending a working file.
A graphics tablet is optional for pressure-sensitive illustration or retouching; no particular model is established as required or tested for V2.5.3. Confirm the device’s driver and operating-system support if you plan to use one.
