The simplest way to bulk resize photos in Windows 10 is Microsoft PowerToys Image Resizer. After you install PowerToys, select several images in File Explorer, right-click them, choose Resize with Image Resizer, select a size, and process the entire selection at once. The utility can resize photos proportionally, preserve the originals, and handle repeatable jobs from the command line.
Before you begin: check Windows 10 compatibility
Current PowerToys documentation lists Windows 10 version 2004, build 19041, or newer, with a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor. The PowerToys installer can install WebView2 through its setup bootstrapper when it is needed.
To check your Windows version, press Windows+R, type winver, and press Enter. If your build is older than 19041, update Windows before trying to install the current release of PowerToys.

Windows 10 support note: Microsoft ended ordinary Windows 10 Home and Pro support on October 14, 2025. Version 22H2 was the final feature update for those editions. Existing Long-Term Servicing Channel editions follow separate lifecycles. A compatible computer may still run PowerToys, but continuing to use an unsupported Windows installation has security and maintenance implications.
Install PowerToys Image Resizer
PowerToys is Microsoft’s free, open-source collection of Windows utilities, and Image Resizer is included in it. Microsoft documents several installation methods, including the Microsoft Store, GitHub, WinGet, Chocolatey, and Scoop.
For a standard Windows installation, open PowerShell or Windows Terminal and run:
winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys --source winget
When installation finishes, open PowerToys from the Start menu. In the PowerToys settings window, select Image Resizer in the left sidebar and make sure the utility is enabled.
How to bulk resize photos with File Explorer
- Open the photo folder. In File Explorer, navigate to the folder containing the images you want to resize.
- Select the images. Hold Ctrl while clicking individual files, use Shift to select a range, or press Ctrl+A to select every file in the folder.
- Open Image Resizer. Right-click the selection and choose Resize with Image Resizer. On some Windows 11-style context menus, you may need to choose Show more options first. The classic Windows 10 context menu normally displays the command directly.
- Choose a preset or create a size. Select a configured preset such as Small, Medium, Large, or Phone, or choose a custom option if it is available in your installation.
- Select the resize behavior. For ordinary photographs, choose Fit unless you specifically need a filled rectangle or intentional cropping.
- Choose the destination and filename behavior. Use a new output folder or a distinct filename pattern so you can compare the resized files with the originals.
- Start the operation. Click Resize. PowerToys will create a resized copy for each selected image.
Before processing a large library, run the workflow on three or four files: at least one landscape photo, one portrait photo, and, if relevant, an image with an unusual aspect ratio.
Choose a target size
Image Resizer presets can use measurements in pixels, percentages, inches, or centimeters. For screen, website, or general sharing purposes, pixels are usually the clearest choice.
For example, a preset with a maximum width of 1600 pixels can produce much smaller copies while retaining enough detail for many online uses. The exact result depends on each source image’s dimensions and aspect ratio.

You do not always need to enter both dimensions. If you leave either width or height empty, PowerToys can calculate the missing dimension from the original aspect ratio. This is generally safer than forcing every photograph into the same width-and-height rectangle.

Fit, Fill, and Stretch: what each option does
| Mode | What it does | Best use | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fit | Scales the complete image proportionally so it fits within the target dimensions. | Most photos, websites, email attachments, and general-purpose copies. | The resulting image may not reach both requested dimensions because the aspect ratio is preserved. |
| Fill | Scales the image until the target area is filled. | Uniform thumbnails, banners, or layouts that require an exact rectangle. | Parts of the image may be cropped. |
| Stretch | Forces the image into the specified width and height. | Special cases where distortion is acceptable or mathematically required. | People, buildings, and other subjects can look unnaturally wide or tall. |
Use Fit for a normal photo batch. Use Fill only when you have reviewed the crop requirements. Avoid Stretch for ordinary photographs because it changes the image’s proportions rather than simply reducing its size.
How to keep the original photos safe
Bulk processing is most useful when it creates working copies. Do not treat resizing as a substitute for a backup, and do not begin with your only copy of an important photo collection.
- Run the first test on copies or a small sample folder.
- Choose a separate destination folder such as
PhotosResized-1600. - Use a new filename pattern that distinguishes the result from the original.
- Open several output files before deleting or moving anything.
- Keep the originals until you have confirmed that the dimensions, orientation, quality, and file locations are correct.
Image Resizer supports filename parameters that can include the original filename and the configured size name. A naming pattern such as the original name plus a size label makes it easier to identify and replace generated copies later.
Handling portrait and landscape photos
A batch can contain both portrait and landscape images. A fixed width and height does not necessarily have the same visual meaning for every orientation. For example, a portrait photograph may need the dimensions interpreted in the opposite direction from a landscape photograph.
Review the Image Resizer orientation setting. With Ignore the orientation of pictures selected, PowerToys may swap the specified width and height to match the image’s orientation. This can be useful for mixed batches, but the safest approach is still to test representative files first.
If a portrait image is unexpectedly cropped, check whether the preset uses Fill and switch to Fit. If a portrait image appears distorted, check that Stretch is not selected.

Is this image conversion?
Not primarily. Image Resizer is designed to change image dimensions, not to serve as a general-purpose format-conversion tool. Microsoft documents that a fallback encoder is used only when the original format cannot be written in the normal way.
Do not assume that selecting a resize preset will convert every file to JPG, PNG, or another format. If your goal is format conversion as well as resizing, use a tool specifically intended for that job and verify the output format before replacing any originals.
Optional: resize a batch from the command line
PowerToys also includes PowerToys.ImageResizerCLI.exe. This is useful when you repeat the same operation, process a known folder structure, or want to include resizing in a script.
A documented-style PowerShell example that resizes JPG files to an explicit 1600-by-1200 target and writes the results to a separate directory is:
PowerToys.ImageResizerCLI.exe --width 1600 --height 1200 -d "C:Resized" .Photos*.jpg
The command uses:
--width 1600to specify the target width.--height 1200to specify the target height.-d "C:Resized"to specify the output directory..Photos*.jpgto identify the input files in the example folder.
For the exact options available in your installed release, run:
PowerToys.ImageResizerCLI.exe --help
Microsoft’s command-line documentation also describes options including --show-config, --size 0, configured presets, and --keep-date-modified. Use --show-config to inspect the current configuration rather than guessing how a preset is named or interpreted.

What if “Resize with Image Resizer” is missing?
- Open PowerToys and confirm that Image Resizer is enabled.
- Close and reopen File Explorer.
- Restart PowerToys, then try the context menu again.
- Confirm that you selected image files rather than a folder or unsupported item.
- Check that your Windows build meets the current PowerToys requirement.
If the command remains unavailable after those checks, update or reinstall PowerToys from an official Microsoft-supported distribution source. Avoid downloading an unrelated third-party executable that merely uses the name “Image Resizer.”

The image is cut off
The preset is probably using Fill, or the target dimensions require cropping. Change the mode to Fit when the entire photograph must remain visible.
The image looks stretched
Change Stretch to Fit. Stretch forces the image into the requested rectangle and can alter the proportions of faces, objects, and architectural lines.
Portrait images have unexpected dimensions
Process a portrait test file and inspect the orientation setting. Mixed batches may need the width and height interpreted according to each image’s orientation.
The originals were overwritten
Stop processing and inspect the folder and Recycle Bin before making further changes. For the next run, select a separate output directory or configure a filename pattern that adds a size label. Always test the naming behavior on a few unimportant copies first.
The computer struggles with a large batch
Process the library in smaller groups and make sure the destination drive has adequate free space. Resizing does not require extra hardware, but large source files and large output batches can still consume substantial storage and temporary working space.
PowerToys versus Microsoft Photos
Microsoft Photos is suitable for editing an individual selected photo, including tasks such as cropping, rotating, applying adjustments, filters, and markup. It is not the documented choice for a comparable multi-file batch-resize workflow. If you need to resize dozens or hundreds of files, Image Resizer is the more direct Windows solution.

Recommended workflow for a large photo library
- Make sure the original library is backed up.
- Create a destination folder for the resized copies.
- Configure a pixel-based preset, such as a maximum width of 1600 pixels.
- Choose Fit unless cropping is intentional.
- Run a small test containing both portrait and landscape images.
- Check dimensions, orientation, cropping, filenames, and file formats.
- Process the remaining folders in manageable batches.
- Keep the original library until the resized copies have been reviewed and backed up.
For most Windows 10 users, the practical answer is therefore PowerToys Image Resizer with a proportional Fit preset and a separate output folder. That combination handles the batch operation without forcing every photo into the same shape or risking the original files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I resize hundreds of photos at once in Windows 10?
Yes. Install PowerToys Image Resizer, select the photos in File Explorer, right-click the selection, choose Resize with Image Resizer, select a preset, and process the batch. Test a few representative files first.
What is the best Image Resizer setting for normal photos?
Choose Fit. It preserves the complete image and maintains its aspect ratio. Use Fill only when cropping is acceptable, and avoid Stretch unless distortion is intentional.
Will PowerToys resize photos without deleting the originals?
It can create resized copies, but you should explicitly use a separate destination folder or a distinct filename pattern and verify the result before removing anything. A backup is still recommended.
Recommended Free Tools
Can Image Resizer handle portrait and landscape photos together?
Yes, but mixed orientations should be tested. Review the orientation setting because PowerToys may swap the specified width and height to match an image’s orientation.
Does Image Resizer convert JPG files to PNG?
It is primarily a resizing utility, not a general file-conversion tool. Microsoft documents fallback encoding only when the original format cannot be written normally, so do not use it as a guaranteed JPG-to-PNG converter.
The Bottom Line
Use Microsoft PowerToys Image Resizer: select your photos in File Explorer, choose Resize with Image Resizer, use Fit for proportional results, and save the output to a separate folder. A small test batch is the best protection against unwanted cropping, orientation surprises, distortion, or filename mistakes.
