Clean copper scrap can be transformed into a blue-green copper(II)-acetate-containing solution and, after controlled concentration, striking crystals. The experiment is a redox and crystallization project—not a kitchen activity—and the product should not be assumed to be pure or safe to ingest, touch, or use as an artist’s pigment.

Yes—clean copper scrap can be converted into a blue-green copper(II)-acetate-containing solution and, with careful concentration and cooling or evaporation, striking blue-green crystals. The experiment is a controlled oxidation and crystallization process, not a kitchen project or a way to make a guaranteed-pure chemical. The final material may contain copper(II) acetate along with impurities from the copper, vinegar, peroxide, and equipment.

Read this safety warning first

Copper(II) acetate is not edible, cosmetic, medicinal, or food-safe. Current safety information for copper(II) acetate monohydrate identifies hazards including harmful effects if swallowed, serious skin or eye irritation or corrosion, and possible respiratory effects after a single exposure. Wear splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, protective clothing, and work with good ventilation. Keep the setup away from food, children, pets, flames, and household cookware.

Never use a sealed vessel. The reaction can warm, bubble, and release gas; a sealed container can build pressure. Do not casually increase the peroxide or acid concentration to make the reaction faster, and do not boil the mixture dry as a default method. Collect all copper-containing liquid and solids for appropriate disposal rather than putting them down a drain.

What you are making

The intended compound is copper(II) acetate, commonly encountered as copper(II) acetate monohydrate. Anhydrous copper(II) acetate is written as Cu(C2H3O2)2 and has a molar mass of 181.63 g/mol. The monohydrate is commonly identified by CAS 6046-93-1. Copper(II) acetate is typically described as a blue-green crystalline solid.

A useful simplified equation is:

Cu(s) + 2 CH3COOH(aq) + H2O2(aq) → Cu(CH3COO)2(aq) + 2 H2O(l)

This is a teaching model, not a complete description of every reaction occurring in the vessel. Metallic copper is oxidized to copper(II), hydrogen peroxide provides oxidizing capacity, and acetic acid supplies acetate in an acidic, water-based medium. Household vinegar and peroxide contain substantial water and may contain additives or stabilizers, so the result should be described as a copper(II)-acetate-containing solution and crystals—not automatically as reagent-grade copper(II) acetate monohydrate.

Materials and equipment

Use a small, controlled setup with:

  • Clean, bare copper wire, sheet, or offcuts.
  • A dilute acetic-acid source such as vinegar, or laboratory acetic acid used strictly according to its label and safety data sheet.
  • A labeled hydrogen-peroxide solution used according to its concentration and safety data sheet. Household 3% peroxide is often used in educational demonstrations, but formulations vary.
  • A borosilicate-glass or otherwise chemically compatible vessel reserved for laboratory use.
  • Glass or plastic tongs, tweezers, or a stirring rod.
  • Laboratory filter paper and a compatible funnel or filtration setup.
  • A second, clearly labeled vessel for copper-containing waste.

Disclosure: Some equipment suggestions in this article may be suitable for affiliate links. They are recommendations by category, not endorsements of a particular brand or a claim that an online listing is laboratory-certified.

If you do not have suitable feedstock, look for bare copper wire for crystal growing or clean, uncoated copper sheet rather than decorative copper objects of unknown composition. For personal protection, use chemical splash goggles and chemical-resistant laboratory gloves. A borosilicate glass beaker and laboratory filter paper are preferable to food cookware and household paper products. Any vessel, tool, or filter used with copper salts should remain laboratory-only and should never return to food use.

Choose the copper carefully

The cleaner the starting metal, the easier it is to obtain an attractive solution and interpret what happens. Good choices include:

Therwen 100ft 24 Gauge Copper Wire for Jewelry Making, Gardening
  • Exact Gauge And Length You Can Plan Around: This copper wire spool holds 100ft / 30.48 m of 24 AWG copper wire measuring 0.02inch/ 0.5mm in diameter. Remember the higher the gauge number, the thinner the wire — if this thickness is not the one your project needs, the size menu above covers 16 gauges from heavy 4 AWG to fine 34 AWG so you can pick by load instead of guessing
  • Made For Wire Wrapping And Jewelry Making: A practical length of copper wire for jewelry making, this gauge threads through most beads and bends into tight coils by hand Use it for wire wrapping, jump rings, ear wires, beaded bracelets, pendant frames and chain links. Fine enough to loop repeatedly without fighting the wire, so it suits both first projects and detailed copper jewelry wire designs
  • 99.9% Pure Bare Copper, No Coating To Strip: Made of 99.9% pure copper wire with no insulation, so you can cut and shape it straight off the spool with regular pliers instead of stripping a jacket first. As uncoated bare copper wire it conducts well and gradually darkens into a natural patina with air exposure — a normal property of raw copper rather than a defect, and a tone many makers keep on finished pieces
  • One Spool For Craft, Garden And Hobby Projects: Beyond copper jewelry making supplies, this soft copper wire works for electroculture garden antennas, plant and bonsai shaping, floral arranging, model and sculpture armatures, holiday DIY decor, weaving and low-voltage hobby circuit connections. Pair it with a thicker or thinner gauge from the same size menu when a project needs both a frame wire and a detail wire
  • Easy To Bend, Store And Handle: The wire bends readily and holds the shape you set, and it ships on its own spool so the wire stays untangled on a bench and travels easily in a craft bag. Spool style may vary, wire length is the same either way. Safety note: this is uninsulated bare wire and cut ends can be sharp — wear gloves or handle cut pieces carefully
  • Bare copper electrical wire with all insulation and adhesive removed.
  • Unpainted copper sheet.
  • Clean copper offcuts with no soldered joints or visible plating.

Avoid brass, bronze, copper-plated steel, soldered assemblies, painted wire, pennies or coins of uncertain composition, and insulated wire unless every coating and adhesive has been completely removed. Alloys and coatings can introduce other dissolved metals, insoluble residue, or unusual colors. A blue-green result is not proof that the product is pure.

Wash away dirt and oils, then rinse and dry the copper. If you cut or roughen it, clean up filings carefully and avoid creating dust. More exposed surface area can make the reaction proceed faster, but powders and fine filings are harder to control and should not be inhaled.

Controlled preparation

1. Set up before combining anything

Use a chemically resistant work surface, eye protection, gloves, and ventilation. Label the reaction vessel and waste vessel before starting. Have a way to cover the crystallization vessel loosely after filtration, while still allowing water to escape. Do not work near food, sinks used for food preparation, children, pets, or open flames.

2. Prepare the acidic oxidizing medium cautiously

Use the peroxide and acetic-acid source in a small-scale setup and follow both product labels and safety data sheets. Do not assume that a fixed volume ratio is universally correct: household products differ in concentration, water content, stabilizers, and other additives. Educational demonstrations often discuss vinegar with 3% hydrogen peroxide, but that does not establish a universal recipe, yield, reaction rate, or purity standard.

Do not substitute concentrated acetic acid or concentrated peroxide for household formulations unless you have the training, equipment, ventilation, and documented procedure required for those chemicals. Never combine this mixture with bleach, ammonia, drain cleaner, or other household chemicals.

3. Expose the copper gradually

Add clean copper so that the liquid wets it without crowding the vessel. The liquid may gradually turn blue or blue-green, and the vessel may warm or show bubbling. Those observations are consistent with copper entering solution, but they do not identify every dissolved species.

Slow down or stop if the mixture becomes vigorously hot, splashes, produces strong irritating fumes, or changes color unexpectedly. Do not add a large extra quantity of peroxide to rescue a slow reaction. A slow reaction may result from coated copper, low exposed surface area, dilute or decomposed peroxide, or simply the conditions of the setup.

4. Cool and filter

Once the desired amount of copper has reacted, allow the mixture to cool. Filter it into a clean, labeled crystallization vessel. Dark or pale solids may be copper oxides, alloy contaminants, stabilizer residues, or undissolved metal. Removing them improves the appearance of the crystallization solution, although filtration does not make the product analytically pure.

Do not scrape unknown residue into a household bin or rinse it into a drain. Put used filters and copper-bearing solids into the labeled waste container.

5. Grow crystals by controlled concentration

Place the filtered solution in a clean, laboratory-only crystallization vessel and protect it from dust and direct sunlight. Allow water to leave slowly at room temperature. A loose cover or a cover with a small vent helps reduce contamination while permitting evaporation. Slow evaporation generally gives better control than boiling the solution dry.

As the solution becomes more concentrated and then cools or evaporates, blue-green crystals may form on the vessel or around a seed crystal. Crystal size and shape depend on concentration, temperature, evaporation speed, impurities, and hydration state. There is no guaranteed household recipe that produces a particular crystal shape or size.

If small crystals form rapidly, you can try slowing evaporation and keeping the vessel undisturbed. A clean seed crystal may encourage further growth, but it will not correct a heavily contaminated solution. Do not taste, touch crystals with bare hands, or treat their attractive appearance as evidence of safety.

6. Harvest and store

Use clean tools to remove the crystals, allowing excess surface liquid to drain back into the crystallization vessel or waste container. Store the material in a sealed, clearly labeled container marked “copper(II) acetate—do not ingest.” Keep it away from food, medicines, animal supplies, children, and household chemicals. Avoid projects in which the crystals could contact food, skin, or animals.

Troubleshooting the color and crystals

Observation Likely possibilities What to do
No blue-green solution The copper may be coated, alloyed, too thick, or insufficiently exposed. The acid or peroxide may be too dilute or degraded. The reaction may also be slow. Check the feedstock and labels, improve cleaning and exposure cautiously, and allow more time. Do not compensate with a large extra addition of peroxide or concentrated acid.
Black or brown residue Copper oxides, undissolved metal, or contamination from an alloy or coating. Allow the mixture to cool and filter it. Do not assume the residue is copper(II) acetate.
White or cloudy material Additives, carbonate contamination, insoluble alloy components, or a pH change may be involved. Do not identify the material by color alone. Filter suspended solids and treat the entire batch as copper-containing waste if its composition is uncertain.
Powder instead of large crystals Evaporation may be too fast, the solution may be impure, or the concentration may not be favorable for larger crystals. Use a clean vessel, filter more carefully, protect the solution from disturbance, and slow evaporation. A seed crystal can help, but crystal size is not guaranteed.
Green rather than blue crystals or solution Copper(II) acetate commonly appears blue-green. Shade can vary with hydration, concentration, lighting, impurities, and associated copper species. Accept that color is a visual observation, not an analytical identification. Do not claim a pure compound based only on appearance.

Why the result is not automatically reagent-grade

There are several sources of uncertainty: scrap copper may contain alloying metals or plating; vinegar is not a standardized laboratory reagent; peroxide formulations vary and can decompose; and evaporation concentrates whatever impurities entered the vessel. Hydration can also change as the material forms and dries. The result may be visually beautiful while still being chemically mixed.

For a reproducible laboratory experiment, use documented reagent specifications, known copper metal, compatible glassware, controlled concentrations, and appropriate analytical testing. Do not use a home-grown batch where identity or purity matters. Conversely, do not purchase commercial copper acetate and describe it as a product made from scrap; those are different materials and different claims.

Waste disposal: do not put copper down the drain

Copper is an essential nutrient at very low concentrations but can be toxic to aquatic organisms at higher concentrations. Effects can include mortality and impaired survival, growth, and reproduction, and toxicity depends on water chemistry such as pH, hardness, alkalinity, and dissolved organic carbon.

Collect all of the following:

  • Leftover reaction solution and crystallization liquor.
  • Rinses from copper-contaminated equipment.
  • Unused or rejected crystals.
  • Used filters, residues, filings, and copper-bearing solids.

Keep them in a sealed, compatible, clearly labeled waste container. Do not pour copper-containing liquid down a household drain or onto soil. The correct disposal route depends on your location, amount, and concentration, so contact your municipality’s household hazardous-waste service or a licensed waste facility. Keep the waste container closed and away from incompatible chemicals while you arrange disposal.

Exposure response

If the solution or crystals contact the eyes or skin, follow the relevant product safety data sheet and seek medical advice for significant exposure. If swallowed or inhaled, do not improvise a treatment. Contact Poison Control or emergency services as appropriate, and provide the product labels or safety data sheets. Keep the work area and waste clearly labeled so responders know that copper compounds are involved.

Can these crystals be used in painting?

They can be visually compelling as a science demonstration, reference object, or display specimen, but this home-prepared material should not be treated as a tested artist’s pigment. Do not grind it into airborne powder, apply it to skin, use it on food-contact objects, or give it to children or animals. Its composition, particle behavior, stability, and contamination level are not established by its blue-green color.

For artwork requiring a documented colorant, use a purpose-made art material with its own technical and safety information. Keep the crystal-growing experiment separate from food preparation and ordinary studio cleanup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this produce pure copper acetate?

No. Vinegar and household hydrogen peroxide can produce a copper(II)-acetate-containing solution and blue-green crystals, but household formulations and scrap metal vary. The resulting material is not automatically reagent-grade or pure copper(II) acetate monohydrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can copper acetate waste go down the drain?

No. Copper-containing solutions, crystals, residues, filters, and rinses should be collected in a labeled waste container and taken to a municipal household hazardous-waste service or licensed waste facility. Do not pour them down a drain or onto soil.

Why are my crystals green instead of blue?

Color alone cannot identify the compound. Copper(II) acetate commonly appears blue-green, but hydration, concentration, lighting, impurities, and other copper species can change the shade.

How can I grow larger crystals?

Slow evaporation, careful filtration, a clean crystallization vessel, and minimal disturbance can improve the chance of larger crystals. Crystal size and shape still depend on concentration, temperature, impurities, and hydration, so no fixed result is guaranteed.

The Bottom Line

Clean copper scrap can yield striking blue-green copper(II)-acetate-containing crystals, but the process requires chemical precautions and produces an unverified mixture rather than guaranteed-pure reagent. Use uncoated copper, work in an open and ventilated setup, filter before crystallizing, evaporate slowly, label the product, and collect every copper-containing liquid and solid for proper hazardous-waste disposal.
