The fastest way to improve Midjourney V7 output is to separate the work into four decisions: describe what is in the image, describe how it is composed, define the visual treatment, and then use parameters or references to control variation. Start with a concise subject-action-setting prompt, set the intended aspect ratio, explore in Draft Mode, and refine only the strongest result.

Important version note: the current Midjourney documentation identifies V8.1 as the default version. This guide is specifically about V7, so select V7 or add --v 7 when you need V7 behavior. Draft Mode and Omni Reference are especially important to this distinction.

Table of Contents

Before you start: make sure you are actually using V7

The version matters. The current Midjourney documentation identifies V8.1 as the default version, while this guide focuses on V7 behavior. If you specifically need V7 results or V7-only workflows, select V7 in the website interface or add --v 7 to a Discord prompt.

V7 introduced features such as Draft Mode and Omni Reference. Not every control behaves identically across versions, so an old V6 or early-V7 tutorial may give you outdated instructions. In particular, Omni Reference is documented as a V7 feature, and Draft Mode has different documented behavior in V7 and V8.1.

The advice below combines documented controls with practical workflow guidance. A parameter can influence an image, but Midjourney does not guarantee that a prompt will produce a particular composition, aesthetic, facial detail, logo, hand, or piece of generated text.

The V7 prompt-and-iteration cheat sheet

Goal Start with What it controls
Choose the model --v 7 Uses V7 instead of the changing default.
Choose the canvas --ar 2:3 Sets the width-to-height ratio.
Explore alternatives --chaos 25 Increases variation between initial options.
Control interpretation --stylize 100 Balances literal prompt adherence with Midjourney’s aesthetic interpretation.
Borrow visual treatment --sref IMAGE_URL Uses a Style Reference for color, medium, texture, or lighting.
Carry a subject forward --oref IMAGE_URL --ow 250 Uses an Omni Reference to guide recurring character or object identity.
Separate competing ideas concept one::2 concept two::1 Applies relative weights to multi-prompt sections.
Suppress recurring distractions --no text, watermark, border Requests that specified elements not appear.

These controls are most useful when you change one major variable at a time. If you alter the wording, aspect ratio, reference, stylize, and chaos together, you will not know which change improved or damaged the result.

1. Start with the subject, action, and setting

A reliable Midjourney prompt begins with the visual facts that must be present. State the subject, what it is doing, where it is, and the conditions surrounding it before adding aesthetic language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Subject: who or what is depicted?
  • Action or pose: what is happening?
  • Setting: where does the scene take place?
  • Time and atmosphere: morning, dusk, stormy, quiet, crowded, hazy?
  • Composition: close-up, full body, overhead view, centered, asymmetrical?
  • Lighting and treatment: window light, hard flash, oil paint, charcoal, film grain?

A useful structure is:

[subject] + [action] + [environment] + [composition] + [lighting or mood] + [medium/style] + [parameters]

For example:

editorial portrait of a marine biologist examining coral in a research-vessel laboratory, three-quarter view, morning window light, muted ochre and teal palette, oil-on-panel painting --v 7 --ar 2:3

The first version should not attempt to specify every pore, brushstroke, prop, historical reference, and camera setting. Establish the scene first. Once the composition is promising, add detail in a controlled second pass.

2. Describe the image instead of giving conversational instructions

Midjourney responds more usefully to visible properties than to vague directions such as make this better, make it more impressive, or copy this image but change the subject.

Replace abstract instructions with details a photographer, art director, or painter could act on:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Perspective: low angle, eye level, bird’s-eye view, three-quarter view.
  • Arrangement: subject on the left third, overlapping forms, empty space above the figure.
  • Light: soft north-facing window light, rim light, diffuse overcast light.
  • Color: restrained blue-grey palette, complementary orange and cyan, muted ochre and teal.
  • Materials: rough linen, tarnished brass, wet stone, translucent vellum.
  • Surface: visible impasto, dry-brush edges, fine graphite hatching, subtle paper grain.

When using a Style Reference, keep the text prompt focused on the new content. Let the reference supply much of the visual language instead of repeating a long list of style adjectives.

3. Put the defining information early

Lead with the subject and the action that determine the image’s identity. A poster prompt should not spend its first 40 words on film grain and color grading before explaining what the poster depicts.

Compare these two approaches:

  • Less focused: cinematic, atmospheric, highly detailed, analog, dramatic, textured, moody, restrained palette, film grain, poster design, astronaut in a flooded subway station.
  • More focused: full-body astronaut standing in a flooded subway station, low-angle poster composition, cinematic lighting, restrained palette, analog film grain.

Prompt order is a useful variable to test, not a guaranteed weighting system. Midjourney’s legacy-feature documentation notes that words near the beginning may hold more weight than words near the end. The practical lesson is simple: do not bury the non-negotiable subject or composition beneath a style catalogue.

4. Choose the aspect ratio before generating

Decide where the image will be used before you explore. Midjourney images begin square by default, and the --ar or --aspect parameter changes the width-to-height relationship.

Destination Useful starting ratio Why it helps
Portrait, book-cover concept, vertical painting reference --ar 2:3 Leaves room for a tall figure or vertical composition.
Presentation slide, banner, cinematic frame --ar 16:9 Provides a wide horizontal field.
Profile image, icon concept, grid post --ar 1:1 Keeps the composition square.

Aspect ratio affects framing and subject placement. A square image that looks balanced may become cramped when extended into a portrait or banner. It is usually more efficient to explore in the intended shape than to generate everything square and attempt to rescue it later.

When a promising image needs a different boundary, Midjourney also documents tools such as Pan, Zoom Out, and the web Editor. Treat those as composition tools, not as a reason to ignore the target format at the beginning.

5. Use --stylize deliberately

--stylize controls how strongly Midjourney’s aesthetic preferences influence the result. Lower values generally keep the output closer to the literal wording; higher values give Midjourney more room to interpret the concept artistically. The exact effect depends on the prompt and the other settings.

The documentation describes a stylize range of 0 to 1,000 and gives 100 as the default in the relevant moodboard documentation. Use that range as a control, not as a quality score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Lower stylize: try when the object, layout, pose, or literal scene matters most.
  • Moderate stylize: try when the subject is correct but the image needs more visual character.
  • Higher stylize: try when the concept is clear and you want a more interpretive, painterly, or editorial result.

Change the value in measured steps. For example, compare --stylize 50, --stylize 150, and --stylize 300 while keeping the wording and aspect ratio unchanged. If the subject disappears under an attractive style, reduce stylization before rewriting the entire prompt.

6. Use --chaos for exploration, not for finishing

Chaos controls how different the initial image options are from one another. It is valuable when you have a concept but do not yet know which composition is best.

Use a moderate or high chaos setting during ideation when you want to see genuinely different arrangements. Once one direction works, reduce the number of moving parts for refinement. Keep the selected image, prompt, aspect ratio, and reference settings stable while you investigate smaller changes.

Chaos is not a substitute for a clear brief. It broadens the search; it does not tell Midjourney what the correct answer is. If every option is wrong in the same way, rewrite the subject or composition instead of raising chaos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Use Draft Mode for inexpensive iteration

Draft Mode is designed for rapid V7 prototyping. Midjourney documents one V7 Draft Mode prompt as generating four images at half the GPU cost of a standard V7 prompt. A selected draft can then be regenerated with the higher-quality Enhance action.

This makes Draft Mode useful for testing:

  • the position and scale of the focal subject;
  • different poses or gestures;
  • the broad color direction;
  • whether the setting reads clearly;
  • small prompt wording changes.

Do not judge a draft as if it were final output. Its purpose is to help you decide whether the idea is worth refining. A productive sequence is: draft several compositions, select one, enhance or regenerate it, and only then spend time on local corrections and fine details.

8. Treat Style Reference as a visual-language tool

Style Reference is for transferring the visual feel of an image rather than its specific objects or people. It can influence qualities such as color, medium, texture, lighting, and overall visual treatment. In Discord, it is activated with --sref; on the website, use the image-reference controls.

Keep the new subject in the text prompt:

botanical illustration of a desert fox beside night-blooming cacti, detailed ink contours, pale parchment background --sref IMAGE_URL --v 7

The reference should provide the visual language; the written prompt should explain the fox, plants, arrangement, and setting. Avoid wording such as copy this image and replace the subject. Style Reference is not intended as a promise to reproduce the reference’s objects or people.

For V7 image Style References, the documentation describes multiple Style Reference versions selected with --sv. It identifies --sv 6 as the default and --sv 4 as the older V7 Style Reference model. If an older tutorial tells you to use a style code, check which Style Reference version that code belongs to.

9. Use Omni Reference when subject continuity matters

Omni Reference is the V7 tool for carrying a character, object, vehicle, or non-human creature from one reference image into new creations. In Discord, use --oref; on the website, add the image through the Omni Reference area of the Imagine bar.

Only one image can be used as an Omni Reference, and the feature automatically runs the prompt in V7. Control its influence with --ow. Midjourney documents values from 1 to 1,000, with 100 as the default, and advises that values below 400 are generally more predictable unless very high stylize values are involved.

red-haired expedition painter crossing a snow-covered volcanic ridge at dawn, full-body profile, heavy canvas coat, pale rose light --oref IMAGE_URL --ow 250 --ar 2:3

The reference does not replace the prompt. Describe the new pose, clothing, setting, lighting, camera direction, and action. Fine details such as freckles, tiny logos, and other exact marks may not reproduce perfectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of Omni Reference as a continuity aid, not a character-lock guarantee. If the recurring subject is correct but the image feels stylistically wrong, adjust the Style Reference or stylize setting rather than increasing Omni weight automatically.

10. Give each reference type a different job

Midjourney distinguishes among several image-reference roles. Mixing them works best when you know which problem each one is solving:

Reference type Best used for Do not expect it to do
Image Prompt Broad visual inspiration, shapes, ideas, or general direction. Guarantee exact subject continuity or a precise visual style.
Style Reference Color, medium, texture, lighting, and visual language. Copy the reference’s objects or people exactly.
Omni Reference Recurring character, object, vehicle, or creature identity in V7. Preserve every tiny mark, logo, facial detail, or pose automatically.

A useful combination is one Omni Reference for the recurring subject, one Style Reference for the project’s visual language, and text describing the new scene. Midjourney documents Omni Reference as compatible with Style References, Image Prompts, stylize, Personalization, and Moodboards.

References can also compete. If the result is inconsistent, remove one reference or change one weight at a time. More reference images do not automatically mean more control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Use multi-prompts and weights for competing concepts

Multi-prompts separate sections of a prompt with double colons so Midjourney can consider the ideas independently before combining them. An unspecified section weight defaults to 1, and the weights are relative emphasis rather than exact percentages.

ancient library::2 floating lanterns::1 misty atmosphere::1 --v 7

Here, the library receives more relative emphasis than either the lanterns or the atmosphere. This can help when two concepts are blending incorrectly—for example, when a background object is becoming the focal subject.

Use weights after simplifying the prompt. They cannot fix an ambiguous scene. First make sure the subject, action, and setting are understandable; then use weights to resolve a specific competition.

12. Use --no for a short list of unwanted elements

The --no parameter tells Midjourney what you do not want to appear. It can be useful for recurring distractions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
architectural sketch of a coastal observatory, clean white paper, graphite and sepia wash --no text, watermark, border --v 7

Keep the list short and test it. Negative terms can interact with the rest of the prompt, and a prohibition will not necessarily overcome a strong positive implication. If Midjourney keeps generating a sign because the scene includes a storefront, revise the main description as well as adding --no text.

Do not use --no as a replacement for composition. It can remove distractions, but it cannot explain where the focal subject should stand, how large it should be, or what the viewer should notice first.

13. Refine promising images instead of restarting every time

Once an image has the right subject and overall composition, preserve those strengths. Use targeted variations, localized editing, or the web Editor instead of returning to a blank prompt for every correction.

For a local edit, select enough surrounding area to give Midjourney context. The Vary Region documentation says that larger selections can help the new content match the rest of the image. A tiny selection may not provide enough information about lighting, perspective, edges, or nearby objects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The web Editor can edit Midjourney images as well as personal images. It is useful for extending a background, replacing a distracting object, correcting an edge, or adapting an image to a different composition.

Important Omni Reference limitation

Omni Reference outputs have special restrictions in the documented V7 workflow: they are not currently compatible with Vary Region, Pan, or Zoom Out. The recommended workaround is to load the image into the Editor after removing the reference and its --oref and --ow parameters. If a control is unavailable, do not assume the image is broken; the reference mode itself may be the reason.

14. Save reproducible settings and review rights before publishing

A successful generation is not a repeatable system unless you save the information that produced it. Record:

  • the exact prompt text;
  • the model version, including --v 7 when V7 is required;
  • aspect ratio;
  • stylize and chaos values;
  • Style Reference image and --sv value;
  • Omni Reference image and --ow value;
  • Image Prompts, Moodboards, Personalization, and other active controls;
  • which variation, enhancement, or Editor revision produced the final file.

A plain text file, spreadsheet, notes app, or sketchbook can work. The important thing is to preserve the prompt and settings beside the image rather than relying on memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you prefer a physical reference while learning, a Midjourney prompt guide book can be useful for keeping parameter examples, prompt patterns, and exercises beside your sketchbook. It is optional—not a requirement—and check the edition before buying because Midjourney’s controls change. Some resource links on this site may be affiliate links; that does not make a product necessary for using Midjourney.

A practical V7 workflow for painters

  1. Choose V7 explicitly. Select V7 in the website interface or add --v 7 in Discord.
  2. Write a short scene brief. Start with subject, action, setting, and atmosphere.
  3. Choose the final shape. Add --ar 2:3, --ar 16:9, or another ratio appropriate to the destination.
  4. Explore in Draft Mode. Test composition, pose, scale, and color direction before spending more resources on refinement.
  5. Select one promising direction. Do not keep changing every setting after you find the right structure.
  6. Adjust one control. Try stylize, chaos, a prompt rewrite, or a reference weight—but not all at once.
  7. Add the right reference. Use Style Reference when the visual language is wrong; use Omni Reference when recurring subject identity is wrong.
  8. Refine locally. Use variations or the Editor and provide enough surrounding context for local changes.
  9. Save the final recipe. Record the prompt, model, parameters, references, and revision path.
  10. Review permissions and intended use. Check source-image rights, privacy, trademarks, and the commercial terms that apply to your account.

A diagnostic guide when the result is wrong

Problem First change to try Why
The subject is missing or transformed Shorten the prompt and move the subject and action to the beginning. The image may be overwhelmed by secondary style language.
The composition is attractive but unusable Set the intended aspect ratio before generating again. Canvas shape affects framing and placement.
The image is literal and plain Increase --stylize gradually. More aesthetic interpretation may help.
Every option is too similar Increase chaos during exploration. You need broader initial variation.
The subject is right but the style is wrong Add or replace a Style Reference. Style Reference is designed for visual treatment.
The recurring character or object changes too much Use one Omni Reference and test a moderate --ow. Omni Reference addresses subject continuity in V7.
Two objects merge into one Rewrite the spatial relationship, then consider multi-prompt weights. Clear positive description is more useful than piling on negatives.
Unwanted lettering keeps appearing Try --no text and remove visual cues that imply signs or labels. Negative prompting works best alongside a revised positive prompt.
A local edit looks pasted on Select a larger area around the edit. More context can help match lighting, edges, and perspective.
Pan, Zoom Out, or Vary Region is unavailable Check whether the image used Omni Reference; if so, use the Editor after removing the Omni parameters. Omni outputs have documented compatibility limitations.

Rights, privacy, and commercial-use cautions

Midjourney’s statement that users own assets they create to the fullest extent possible under applicable law is not the same as a universal copyright guarantee. Ownership under Midjourney’s terms, copyright protection in your jurisdiction, permission to use reference material, and the rights of recognizable people or brands are separate questions.

Before publishing or selling an image:

  • Use reference images you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to upload and transform.
  • Do not assume that Midjourney-generated variation or upscaling gives you permission to use another creator’s image. Midjourney identifies upscaling another user’s image as an exception to its ownership statement.
  • Consider privacy, publicity, trademark, and unfair-association issues when a real person, logo, product, or recognizable character is involved.
  • Check whether your organization’s size or account plan creates additional requirements. Midjourney identifies special plan requirements for companies grossing more than $1 million annually.
  • Review the current terms for the jurisdiction and use case that matter to you, and obtain qualified legal advice for high-value or unclear projects.

Generated lettering, logos, hands, faces, and small identifying details can be unreliable. Inspect the finished image at its intended output size and correct important information in an appropriate editing application rather than assuming the first generation is publication-ready.

Common mistakes that slow down V7 progress

  • Adding adjectives instead of information: More style words do not automatically provide more control.
  • Confusing reference roles: Style Reference and Omni Reference solve different problems.
  • Changing everything at once: Without controlled tests, you cannot learn which setting mattered.
  • Treating one lucky generation as a formula: Save the settings, but expect some variation when recreating the result.
  • Following old tutorials without checking the version: Parameters, defaults, and reference behavior can change.
  • Expecting a negative prompt to repair an ambiguous scene: Improve the positive description first.
  • Assuming Midjourney guarantees output quality or availability: Its terms do not guarantee quality, stability, uptime, or reliability.
  • Using another creator’s reference without permission: A generated derivative is not automatically cleared for publication.

What mastering V7 really means

Mastery is not memorizing a magic prompt. It is learning to identify which part of an image is failing and choosing the control that addresses that failure. Use words for the scene, aspect ratio for the canvas, stylize for interpretation, chaos for exploration, Style Reference for visual language, Omni Reference for recurring identity, and the Editor for targeted repair.

Start with a clear scene, explore cheaply in Draft Mode, adjust one variable at a time, and keep a record of what worked. That process gives painters something more valuable than a single attractive result: a repeatable way to develop references, compositions, palettes, and visual studies while keeping the final creative and legal decisions in human hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Midjourney V7 still available if V8.1 is the default?

The current documentation identifies V8.1 as Midjourney’s default, but you can still choose V7 when you need V7 behavior or a V7-specific workflow. Select V7 in the website interface or add --v 7 in Discord. Omni Reference automatically runs prompts in V7 according to its documented behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Style Reference and Omni Reference?

Use Style Reference when the problem is the image’s visual language—color, medium, texture, or lighting. Use Omni Reference when the problem is continuity of a character, object, vehicle, or creature. They can be combined, but change one reference or weight at a time when troubleshooting.

Do I need a graphics tablet to use Midjourney V7?

No. Midjourney can be used through its website or Discord. A graphics tablet may help if you plan to paint or retouch the generated image afterward, but it is not required for Midjourney itself.

Can I commercially publish images generated with Midjourney?

Midjourney states that users own assets they create to the fullest extent possible under applicable law, but that is not a universal copyright guarantee. You must also consider local copyright law, permission for uploaded references, privacy, publicity, trademarks, and any applicable plan requirements.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: To get more consistent Midjourney V7 results, define the scene before the style, choose the aspect ratio early, use Draft Mode for exploration, assign each reference type a specific job, and refine promising images instead of starting over. Always specify V7 when V7 behavior matters, save your settings, and verify permissions before commercial publication.
