There was no single best photograph of 2022. The year’s strongest work depends on what is being judged: historical importance, visual power, ethical significance, formal invention, geographic breadth, or the ability to make a complicated subject understandable. A war photograph, a wildlife image, a constructed fine-art picture, and a photobook do not belong to one neutral competition.
A defensible selection therefore begins with Amber Bracken’s Kamloops Residential School, the 2022 World Press Photo of the Year, and then expands outward to Indigenous ecological knowledge, the Amazon, Ukraine, migration, climate change, scientific discovery, contemporary portraiture, and the photobook as an art form. The result is not a universal ranking, but a representative map of what photography mattered in 2022.
What does “the best photography of 2022” mean?
The phrase can refer to at least three different dates:
- Photographs made in 2022: images actually taken during the calendar year.
- Photographs published or selected in 2022: work that appeared in a magazine, gallery, annual review, or editorial list that year.
- Awards announced in 2022: competitions whose entries may include photographs made before 2022.
Those categories should not be silently merged. The 2022 World Press Photo Contest, for example, recognized documentary and photojournalistic work submitted to that contest; some winning photographs depict events from 2021. National Geographic’s December 2022 issue was a year-end editorial selection by the magazine’s photographers, while the major photobook lists concerned books published or recognized during the year.
#1 Best Overall
The institutions behind the most useful selections also had different purposes:
| Source | What it judged or selected | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| World Press Photo | Photojournalism and documentary photography | Historical consequence, testimony, public events, and social meaning |
| National Geographic | Work by its photographers across nature, science, culture, travel, and human stories | Breadth, discovery, conservation, and visual variety |
| The Guardian and TIME | Year-end photographs connected to major events and their wider significance | A record of war, migration, political upheaval, climate, and social change |
| Sony World Photography Awards | Professional, Open, Student, Youth, National, and Regional competitions | A broader view of contemporary photography beyond breaking news |
| Smithsonian, TIME, and MoMA | Photography books and book-based photographic projects | Sequencing, pacing, design, archives, and the physical form of the work |
Read the selections accordingly. A World Press Photo winner is not automatically “better” than a Sony winner, and a photobook is not a consolation prize for an image that failed to appear on a single-image list. They are different kinds of photographic achievement.
The defining documentary image: Amber Bracken’s Kamloops Residential School
The clearest institutional anchor for 2022 is Amber Bracken’s Kamloops Residential School, which won World Press Photo of the Year in the 2022 Contest. The photograph shows red dresses hung along a roadside to commemorate children who died at the Kamloops Indian Residential School.

Its force comes from restraint. Rather than turning suffering into spectacle, the image centers an act of remembrance. The dresses make absence visible: a simple, repeated form becomes a memorial, a public statement, and a connection between one site and the larger history of colonial violence against Indigenous communities. The picture is visually quiet, but its meaning is not small. It asks viewers to consider how memory is carried by objects, places, and collective ritual.
That combination of visual economy and historical significance explains why the image is such a strong answer to the question of what mattered in 2022. It is not merely a beautifully composed photograph. It makes a complex and painful subject immediately legible without pretending that a single frame can contain the entire history.
Three World Press Photo projects that broaden the picture
The other global winners associated with the 2022 World Press Photo Contest help define the year’s documentary concerns.
Matthew Abbott: Saving Forests with Fire
Matthew Abbott’s Saving Forests with Fire focuses on Indigenous cool-burning practices and ecological stewardship. Its importance is partly environmental, but it is also about knowledge: fire is not presented simply as a destructive force. Used carefully, it can be part of a sophisticated land-management tradition. The project challenges the familiar visual language of climate coverage, which often shows only catastrophe, by making Indigenous expertise central to the story.
Lalo de Almeida: Amazonian Dystopia
Lalo de Almeida’s Amazonian Dystopia examines environmental and social pressures in the Amazon. The title signals a long-term project rather than a single dramatic incident. Its value lies in connecting ecological destruction with the lives, communities, and political conditions surrounding it. The Amazon becomes more than an image of remote wilderness; it is a place where environmental change and social consequences are inseparable.
Isadora Romero: Blood is a Seed
Isadora Romero’s Blood is a Seed addresses memory, land, and identity in Ecuador. The project links family or communal history to place, showing how ancestry is not abstract but embedded in landscapes, inherited stories, and relationships to land. It also widens the geographical and cultural frame of the year’s documentary photography beyond the most heavily covered conflicts.
Taken together, these four World Press Photo projects—Bracken’s memorial image, Abbott’s account of Indigenous fire stewardship, de Almeida’s Amazon project, and Romero’s exploration of memory and identity—point toward a coherent set of concerns: climate crisis, Indigenous knowledge, ecological destruction, and historical memory.
War, displacement, and political upheaval
Any serious account of 2022 photography must include the visual record of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Photographs from Mariupol, images of refugees and displaced people, and scenes of civilian resilience became part of the year’s defining record. The Guardian’s year-end review identified the war in Ukraine, migration, and the climate crisis as dominant subjects among its 20 outstanding images.
These pictures perform several roles at once. Some document immediate danger and destruction. Others record the logistics of displacement: the movement of families, the temporary nature of shelters, and the uncertain geography of refuge. Still others show people maintaining ordinary routines or supporting one another under extraordinary pressure. That range matters because a conflict should not be reduced to ruins and grief alone, even though those realities must be documented.
TIME’s Top 10 Photos of 2022 offers a related way to understand the year. Its selection was organized not only around the scenes photographed but around what consequential events meant socially and politically. This is an important distinction: historical impact is not identical to technical perfection. A photograph may be grainy, hurried, or visually restrained and still become indispensable because of what it records and how it enters public memory.
National Geographic’s broader view of the year
National Geographic’s 2022 Pictures of the Year is one of the strongest sources for visual breadth. The December 2022 issue selected 49 photographs from the year. A behind-the-scenes account reported that 132 photographers working in 60 countries submitted 2,238,899 images for consideration.

The final selection covered environmental change, wildlife, scientific discovery, exploration, cultural communities, and human stories. That range is especially valuable in a year-end discussion dominated by war and political crisis. It does not make the crises less important; it shows that photography’s work in 2022 also included discovery, attention, beauty, adaptation, and the careful observation of life beyond the news cycle.

Four ways to read the National Geographic selection
- Discovery: Images can make a scientific or historical find understandable and emotionally immediate. The discovery of the shipwreck Endurance is a useful example: photography turns an otherwise difficult-to-imagine event into something viewers can encounter visually.
- Conservation: Photographs of endangered species affected by climate change can show animals and ecosystems as subjects with their own visual presence, not merely as illustrations of environmental decline.
- Culture and identity: Images of communities, rituals, memory, and lived experience resist the idea that culture is decorative background. They give social worlds their own visual authority.
- Human resilience: Photographs of Ukrainian refugees and other displaced people can acknowledge vulnerability without reducing people to victims. Agency, adaptation, solidarity, and dignity are part of the story.
For readers who want to study the selection as a physical source, the National Geographic December 2022 Pictures of the Year issue is an archival option. It is best understood as a source artifact—a dedicated photography issue—not as required reading or a guarantee of current retail availability.
National Geographic also published a separate selection of 17 best travel photographs of 2022. Those images reflected the return of travel and emphasized landscapes, conservation efforts, cultural communities, and destinations seen through fresh perspectives. They are useful because they complicate the usual travel photograph: the strongest examples are not simply attractive views, but images that connect place with environmental care, community, or a changed way of seeing.
Contemporary photography beyond breaking news
The 2022 Sony World Photography Awards broaden the field further. The competition included Professional, Open, Student, Youth, National, and Regional awards, and Sony reported approximately 345,000 entries from professional and amateur photographers in 211 countries and territories.
Adam Ferguson was named Professional Photographer of the Year. The awards also recognized Edward Burtynsky with the Outstanding Contribution to Photography Award. Together, those recognitions place current professional practice alongside a major career contribution, reminding us that the year’s photographic conversation includes both emerging work and the long-term development of the medium.
Sony is particularly useful for readers interested in portraiture, landscape, architecture, wildlife, still life, conceptual work, and long-form professional series alongside photojournalism. Its categories allow photographs to be considered for what they do as images—not only for the event they document.
The World Photography Organisation made the winning images available through galleries and a free downloadable 2022 book. A physical Sony World Photography Awards 2022 book may also be worth seeking for readers who want a browsable annual collection, although availability can vary and the official shop listing indicated that the title might be sold out.
Sony and World Press Photo should not be presented as rival rankings. Their formats, judging structures, entry pools, and purposes differ. World Press Photo is especially useful for documentary importance and public testimony; Sony is especially useful for understanding the wider range of contemporary photographic practice.

Photography in 2022 was not encountered only as an individual image on a screen. The photobook was itself a major form of photographic work. In a book, meaning can emerge through sequencing, pacing, repetition, paper, scale, typography, archival material, and the relationship between images. A photograph that feels ambiguous alone may become precise when placed beside another image several pages later.
Smithsonian’s editors selected ten best photography books of 2022, describing a recurring interest in books that function as windows into unfamiliar worlds. The list included Bird Planet, Floridas, I Just Wanna Surf, Carlos Jaramillo’s Tierra del Sol, and Daniel Jack Lyons’s Like a River. The range suggests that the year’s photobook culture was concerned with place, identity, communities, and forms of visual experimentation.
TIME’s photography editors selected 20 best photobooks of 2022, including books by Alessandra Sanguinetti, Wendy Red Star, and Justine Kurland. Its selection demonstrated the medium’s breadth through archival reworkings, collage, portraiture, family history, landscape, and experimental book design.
MoMA’s annual photobook discussion adds a museum and curatorial perspective. Its selection was developed through recurring conversations among photography curators and colleagues from the museum’s Archives, Library, and Research Collections. That process matters because it treats the book not simply as packaging for photographs, but as an object that can be studied, collected, designed, and interpreted.

Availability, editions, and prices vary, especially for books from small presses, museum shops, and specialist sellers. The important point is to choose a book because its sequence and physical form contribute to the work—not merely because one image from it appeared in a list.
A representative shortlist of the best photography recognized in 2022
This is a curated shortlist by category, not a claim that these are the only or universally superior photographs and projects of the year.
- Amber Bracken — Kamloops Residential School: a restrained memorial image and World Press Photo of the Year winner, representing Indigenous remembrance and the history of colonial violence.
- Matthew Abbott — Saving Forests with Fire: documentary work on Indigenous cool-burning practices and ecological stewardship.
- Lalo de Almeida — Amazonian Dystopia: a long-term environmental and social project about pressures affecting the Amazon.
- Isadora Romero — Blood is a Seed: a project connecting land, memory, ancestry, and identity in Ecuador.
- National Geographic’s 2022 Pictures of the Year: a broad group representing science, wildlife, climate, exploration, culture, endangered species, the Endurance discovery, and human stories including Ukrainian refugees.
- Adam Ferguson’s Sony World Photography Awards portfolio: a contemporary professional benchmark distinct from hard-news photojournalism.
- The Guardian’s year-end photographs: a news-and-society counterpoint focused especially on Ukraine, migration, climate, protest, and political change.
- TIME’s Top 10 Photos of 2022: a compact selection organized around impact, consequential events, and historical memory.
- Smithsonian’s best photography books of 2022: a representative field spanning place, identity, communities, and visual experimentation.
- TIME and MoMA’s photobook selections: complementary specialist perspectives on fine-art photography, archives, collage, portraiture, landscape, and book form.
How to decide which 2022 photographs are “best” for you
If you are building a personal shortlist, use several criteria instead of relying on a single impression of beauty.
| Criterion | Question to ask | What it helps reveal |
|---|---|---|
| Historical importance | Will this image help future viewers understand what happened? | The photograph’s value as a record and part of public memory |
| Visual force | How do framing, color, light, scale, rhythm, and absence direct attention? | The image’s formal and emotional power |
| Ethical significance | Does the photograph respect its subjects and give necessary context? | The difference between witnessing and turning suffering into spectacle |
| Formal or technical innovation | Does the work find a new structure, process, viewpoint, or visual language? | Photography’s development as an art form |
| Representational breadth | Whose experience, geography, or knowledge does the work make visible? | Whether the year’s story has been narrowed by familiar media centers |
| Explanatory power | Does the image make a complicated subject clearer without oversimplifying it? | The relationship between immediate impact and deeper understanding |
For readers coming from painting, the formal questions may feel familiar: composition, color, contrast, rhythm, scale, and the use of empty space. Documentary photography adds another obligation. The people and events in the frame are not raw material invented for an artist’s studio. The circumstances of making, publishing, and captioning the image are part of how it should be judged.

- Read the caption before judging the image. Location, date, names, and circumstances can change what a photograph means.
- Keep the photographer’s authorship visible. Give full credits whenever reproducing or discussing an image.
- Identify the selection method. Say whether a work came from an award, an editorial list, a museum-curated discussion, or a specialist review.
- Separate documentary importance from aesthetic judgment. A photograph may be historically indispensable without being conventionally beautiful; another may be formally astonishing without documenting a major event.
- Look beyond United States- and Europe-centered coverage. The World Press Photo and National Geographic selections provide useful geographic breadth, while projects such as Blood is a Seed and Amazonian Dystopia broaden the frame further.
- Do not treat one picture as a complete account. Especially in conflict and disaster coverage, seek the wider project, photographer’s statement, commissioning context, and reporting around the image.
- Distinguish the image from the book. In a photobook, sequencing, paper, typography, and scale may be essential parts of the meaning.
Where to start
For one defining documentary image, begin with Amber Bracken’s Kamloops Residential School. For a view of the year’s central environmental and historical concerns, follow it with Matthew Abbott, Lalo de Almeida, and Isadora Romero. For breadth, turn to National Geographic’s 49-image Pictures of the Year and its 17-image travel selection. For work outside hard-news photojournalism, explore the Sony World Photography Awards galleries and Adam Ferguson’s Professional Photographer of the Year portfolio.
Then change format. The Smithsonian, TIME, and MoMA photobook selections offer a different experience of 2022—one built through sequence, material, and sustained attention rather than the instant impact of a single frame. That change of format is not optional if the goal is to understand the year’s photography as art as well as evidence.
There is no need to own every title or accept every institutional choice. The most useful approach is comparative: place a memorial image beside an environmental project, a news photograph beside a portrait or landscape series, and a single frame beside a book. The contrasts reveal what each form can do.
Frequently Asked Questions
What was the most important photograph of 2022?
Amber Bracken’s Kamloops Residential School is the strongest single institutional answer because it won World Press Photo of the Year and joined a restrained memorial gesture to the broader history of Indigenous remembrance and colonial violence. It should be described as among the year’s most significant images, not as an objectively superior photograph in every category.

Does a 2022 photography award always mean the photograph was taken in 2022?
No. An award year, publication year, and image-making year can differ. The 2022 World Press Photo Contest included work depicting events from 2021, so individual captions and contest rules should be checked before calling an image a photograph made during the 2022 calendar year.
What is the difference between World Press Photo and the Sony World Photography Awards?
World Press Photo is primarily a documentary and photojournalism competition, while Sony’s awards include Professional, Open, Student, Youth, National, and Regional categories covering a wider range of contemporary photographic practice. Their winners should not be treated as entries in one universal ranking.
Why are photobooks separate from lists of the best photographs?
A photobook is a complete photographic work whose sequencing, pacing, paper, scale, typography, archival material, and design can create meaning unavailable in a single image. Smithsonian, TIME, and MoMA therefore provide a different kind of evaluation from image-of-the-year awards.
Where can I explore more photography from 2022?
Start with the official World Press Photo and Sony World Photography Awards galleries, National Geographic’s 2022 Pictures of the Year selection, The Guardian’s year-end review, TIME’s Top 10 photographs, and the Smithsonian, TIME, and MoMA photobook selections. Availability of physical magazines and books varies by seller and edition.

Bottom line: The best photography of 2022 is better understood as a field than a ranking. Bracken’s Kamloops Residential School provides the year’s clearest documentary anchor, while the World Press Photo projects, National Geographic’s broad selection, the Sony awards, the Ukraine and migration coverage, and the major photobook lists reveal a more complete picture: a year shaped by remembrance, ecological crisis, displacement, Indigenous knowledge, discovery, identity, and the continuing expansion of photography as an art form.
