Krita 5.3.1 is a free, open-source painting program released on March 31, 2026. You can still download its official Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android files from the KDE Krita 5.3.1 directory. However, Krita 5.3.3 is the newer 5.3-series release as of August 2026, so most new users should install 5.3.3 unless they specifically need 5.3.1 for compatibility, testing, reproducibility, or a known regression.
Official Krita 5.3.1 downloads
Use krita.org for the current release, or the official KDE archive for version 5.3.1. Avoid “cracked” copies, repacked installers, download managers, and unofficial “free brush bundle” downloads.

Windows: installer or portable ZIP?
Installer
- Download
krita-x64-5.3.1-setup.exefrom the official KDE directory. - Run the installer and follow the setup prompts.
- Launch Krita from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
The Windows release is 64-bit only. If the installer will not run, confirm that Windows is 64-bit, the download completed properly, and antivirus or SmartScreen has not quarantined the file. Make sure you selected the installer rather than a debug-symbol archive. Do not download replacement DLL files from random websites.

Download krita-x64-5.3.1.zip, extract it to a folder, and launch Krita from that folder. This is useful when you lack administrator rights, want to carry Krita on an external drive, or want to test 5.3.1 beside another installation.

A portable copy can coexist with an installed copy, but the two are not fully isolated: they share settings and custom resources. That explains why an older brush collection or configuration may appear in the portable version.
Linux: run the AppImage
Download krita-5.3.1-x86_64.AppImage. You can usually launch it through your file manager by enabling Allow executing file as program or an equivalent permission. From a terminal, run:
chmod +x krita-5.3.1-x86_64.AppImage
./krita-5.3.1-x86_64.AppImageIf double-clicking does nothing, launch it directly from a terminal so you can see the error. Krita specifically warns that some versions of AppImageLauncher may be incompatible with newer AppImage runtimes. If AppImageLauncher is installed, test the file directly without handing it to the launcher.

macOS: install the signed DMG
- Open
krita-5.3.1-signed.dmg. - Drag Krita into the Applications folder.
- Eject the disk image.
- Open Krita from Applications.
The 5.3.1 package is identified as a signed DMG. If macOS blocks it, first confirm that it came from the official Krita or KDE download location. Then use the macOS security prompt or System Settings → Privacy & Security to allow the trusted application. Do not disable Gatekeeper globally. macOS requirements can change between Krita releases, so verify compatibility for the exact package rather than relying on a generic minimum.
Android and Chromebook downloads
Krita for Android is beta software intended primarily for tablets and Chromebooks, not ordinary Android phones. Version 5.3.1 has APK builds for 64-bit Intel, 64-bit ARM, and 32-bit ARM devices.
- ARM64: the usual choice for modern Android tablets.
- Intel 64-bit: for compatible Intel-based devices.
- ARM 32-bit: mainly for older hardware.
Check the device architecture before installing an APK. Also check the official news archive for a later Android build: Krita 5.3.1.1 was released as an Android-only fix for regressions in 5.3.1. A later Android patch may be more appropriate than the original 5.3.1 APK.

What Krita 5.3.1 fixed
The release was primarily a bug-fix update. Its notable fixes included:
- Windows slowdowns caused by accessibility queries from software such as PowerToys FancyZones or Google Drive-related software.
- Android canvas panning, text fields, text-tool behavior, keyboard input, stylus handling, and screen-panning corrections.
- OnePlus stylus middle-click support on Android.
- Drag-and-drop fixes on Wayland.
- A correction for changing units in the canvas-resize dialog.
- Fixes affecting incremental backups and version saving.
- The mutator shortcut changing from Z to Ctrl+Alt+Shift+M.
The announcement also discusses Krita 6.0.1 fixes. Those should not be mistakenly presented as changes delivered by Krita 5.3.1.
Krita 5.3 versus Krita 6
Krita 5.3 is the Qt5 build line. Krita 6 is the related Qt6 build line, created to future-proof Krita as Linux distributions reduce Qt5 support. They belong to the same broad generation, but they are technically different builds.
The Krita project presented the 5.3 line as the more suitable choice for productive work during the Qt5-to-Qt6 transition, while the corresponding 6.0.1 release was described as more experimental. If a plug-in, script, tutorial, or production environment requires Qt5-based Krita, choose 5.3.x rather than casually substituting Krita 6.

Krita is also sold through some stores, including Steam, the Microsoft Store, Epic Games Store, Google Play, and the Mac App Store. Those paid listings do not mean the direct download is a trial or fake. Store editions provide a convenient distribution channel, store-managed updates, and a way to support development. Prices and availability vary by platform, country, tax, and date; a purchase in one storefront does not automatically transfer to another.
Choose the Steam edition if Steam-managed installation and updates matter to you. Windows users who prefer Microsoft’s ecosystem can check the Microsoft Store listing, which requires Windows 10 or later according to Krita’s download information. Mac users can compare the free DMG with the Mac App Store edition; the cited US listing showed $12.99, but regional pricing can change.
If you want to support Krita directly without buying a store copy, the Krita Development Fund offers memberships. This is development funding, not a premium edition with extra drawing features, cloud storage, or priority support.

Current baseline requirements
Krita’s current download page lists a useful baseline of Windows 8.1 or later, Linux support, macOS requirements that vary by release, 4 GB of RAM minimum, and 16 GB recommended. It also lists graphics support including OpenGL 3.0 or higher or Direct3D 11, plus any graphics tablet supported by the operating system.
These are current Krita baseline requirements and may reflect the currently promoted 5.3.3 release rather than a guaranteed release-specific specification for every 5.3.1 package. Meeting a baseline does not guarantee that every driver, tablet, desktop environment, or Android device will behave identically.
Verify the download
- Download only from
krita.orgordownload.kde.org. - Open the directory’s Details link to view the published file hashes.
- Calculate the local hash and compare it with the official value.

Casual users do not need to understand GPG before launching an official download, but checksum verification is sensible when a file was downloaded over an unreliable connection or copied between systems. Do not rely on a checksum copied from an unverified mirror, and do not publish or trust an expected hash unless it matches the live official directory.

Common problems
“The Krita download is paid.”
You are probably looking at a store edition. The official website build remains free and open source; paid storefronts are optional support and convenience channels.

The Windows installer will not run
Confirm 64-bit Windows, redownload the file, check antivirus or SmartScreen quarantine, close old Krita processes, and make sure you selected the setup executable rather than debug symbols. Consider testing the newer 5.3.3 release if 5.3.1 is not required.
The portable copy has old brushes or settings
This is expected. Portable and installed copies share settings and custom resources.
The Linux AppImage does nothing
Run chmod +x and launch it from a terminal. If AppImageLauncher is installed, bypass it and launch the AppImage directly.
Android says the APK is incompatible
You likely selected the wrong architecture. Check whether the tablet uses ARM64, Intel 64-bit, or older ARM 32-bit hardware, and consider a later Android-only patch.

No. Krita’s official download information states that iPad and iPhone are not supported. The macOS DMG is for macOS, not iPadOS.
