Microsoft Designer is still available at no charge for eligible personal users, but the original “anyone can try it for free” headline is historical. Microsoft announced expanded public-preview access on May 1, 2023. In 2026, Designer remains a free consumer service with monthly AI credits, account and regional eligibility rules, and a redesigned editing experience.
The short answer
You do not need to buy a Microsoft 365 subscription just to try the standalone Microsoft Designer experience. However, free access is not unlimited: AI image creation and editing use monthly credits. Paid Microsoft 365 plans provide higher usage and additional Microsoft 365 benefits.
The safest current description is: Microsoft Designer is available to try at no charge for eligible personal users, subject to account, region, age, and monthly-credit limits.

Microsoft’s own pages are not completely consistent about account requirements. Its FAQ refers to a free Microsoft account, while its welcome page says users need a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family account and that the service is not currently available to enterprise users. In practice, eligibility may depend on the account, market, and feature.

What Microsoft Designer does
Designer is an AI-assisted graphic-design and image-editing app. You can begin with a written prompt, a template, or an uploaded image, then refine the result in the editor.
- Generate images and design assets from prompts.
- Create invitations, greeting cards, collages, stickers, emojis, wallpapers, avatars, clip art, and social-media graphics.
- Remove or blur backgrounds.
- Erase unwanted objects and distractions.
- Restyle or frame photos.
- Crop, resize, and add text.
- Start from templates or build a design from scratch.
The original pitch was simple: describe what you want and receive AI-powered design suggestions. That remains useful for quick items such as a painter’s social post, workshop invitation, portfolio announcement, or seasonal greeting, but the generated layout and lettering still need human checking.
How to use Microsoft Designer
On the web
- Go to designer.microsoft.com.
- Select the sign-in option.
- Sign in with an eligible personal Microsoft account.
- Choose an AI creation tool, template, or editing workflow.
- Enter a prompt or upload an image.
- Review the generated options, then edit, save, download, or share the result.
If a free account is rejected, try the web app with a personal account rather than a school, employer, or enterprise-managed account. Also check your account’s age and region settings. Do not assume that creating multiple accounts will bypass Microsoft’s age, regional, or organizational restrictions.

Microsoft lists Designer apps for iOS and Android. The iOS App Store listing describes image generation, cards, wallpapers, photo editing, background removal, and distraction erasing, and says the app is free with a Microsoft account.
Inside Microsoft 365 apps
Designer-related features can also appear in Microsoft 365 and Copilot experiences, but those are not identical to the free standalone app. Microsoft says using Designer through Word and PowerPoint requires Copilot Pro. Desktop Word and PowerPoint additionally require a Microsoft 365 subscription. Copilot image generation and Designer-powered tools in Microsoft Photos may have their own access rules.

What “free” means
Microsoft’s plan page lists a free Designer tier that includes AI creation and editing with monthly credits. AI actions can consume those credits, so free use is best suited to occasional projects rather than high-volume production.
Microsoft does not provide a dependable universal credit number in the cited plan information. Check the allowance shown in your account rather than relying on an old review or screenshot. Microsoft may change allocations, eligible actions, or reset behavior.
When free credits run out, Microsoft directs users toward Microsoft 365 Personal or Family for additional usage. A subscription can make sense if you regularly generate images, already need Office applications, or want OneDrive storage. It is harder to justify if you only make an occasional card, wallpaper, or social post.
Microsoft 365 plans and pricing
The following U.S. prices were shown on Microsoft’s Designer page on August 18, 2026. Prices, trials, benefits, and credit allocations can change, so verify them before publishing or purchasing.

Microsoft says paid Personal, Family, and Premium plans can provide up to four times more credits for the account owner. That does not make Designer unlimited, and paying for Premium solely to create occasional graphics is difficult to justify.

Important changes since the 2023 preview
Old tutorials may no longer describe the product accurately. Microsoft says it deprecated access to Designer’s legacy visual editor beginning October 20, 2025, migrating users to a new editor.

- Existing brand kits could be downloaded before the migration deadline.
- Stock videos would no longer be available in the Visuals tab.
- Other stock content, including photos, illustrations, and shapes, would remain available.
Microsoft also says every image is now automatically boosted, so creation speed no longer varies according to creation frequency. Older articles that describe visible “boosts” as a resource or queue system may be outdated.
If your screen does not match a 2023 or 2024 tutorial—or your brand kits are missing—the editor migration is the likely explanation.
Limitations to expect
AI-generated text can be wrong
Do not trust generated lettering for names, dates, addresses, prices, phone numbers, or event details. Treat text inside generated artwork as a draft. Add important wording in the editor when possible, then proofread the downloaded file at full size.
Enterprise access is unclear but restricted
Microsoft’s current welcome page says Designer is not currently available to enterprise users. That is different from personal access, Microsoft 365 Personal or Family access, and Copilot features inside an organization’s Microsoft 365 environment. Businesses should check their licensing, administrator policies, and Microsoft’s current terms before adopting Designer for company work.

Commercial rights are not automatic
Do not assume every generated image is copyright-clear, exclusive, or automatically safe for commercial use. Microsoft publishes consumer terms and separate Designer terms; review the terms that apply to your account and use case.
AI output may resemble an existing artwork, logo, trademark, celebrity, recognizable character, or person. For important commercial material, perform human copyright, publicity-rights, trademark, and brand review. Microsoft’s content-safety systems are not a substitute for legal clearance.
Content credentials help, but do not prove everything
Microsoft says images created with Designer’s editing features include content credentials and provenance based on the C2PA standard. These credentials can help identify that an image was generated or edited with AI.
They are metadata, not a complete record of an image’s history. Credentials may not survive every download, conversion, screenshot, or reposting workflow, and they do not resolve copyright or publicity-rights questions.
Who should use Designer?
Designer is a strong fit if you already use Windows, Microsoft 365, OneDrive, or Copilot and want quick graphics without learning professional design software. It is particularly practical for social posts, invitations, cards, simple promotional artwork, wallpapers, and basic AI photo cleanup.

It is a weaker fit if you need unlimited high-volume generation, advanced vector illustration, professional page layout, strict enterprise brand governance, a stable interface matching old tutorials, or guaranteed rights clearance.
For comparison, Canva is worth considering for template-driven social posts, presentations, marketing assets, and collaboration. Adobe Express may suit users already invested in Adobe’s ecosystem, while Adobe Creative Cloud is more appropriate for advanced Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign workflows. These are alternatives, not automatic upgrades, and their current pricing should be checked separately.
Bottom line
Microsoft Designer is free to try, but the phrase comes from Microsoft’s May 1, 2023 expanded public-preview announcement—not a new 2026 launch. Today, eligible personal users can use the standalone service without paying, subject to monthly AI credits and account, age, and regional restrictions.
Try the web app first. Subscribe only if you repeatedly hit the credit limit or would use the broader Microsoft 365 package. For occasional graphics, the free tier may be enough; for professional branding, high-volume production, or rights-sensitive commercial work, treat Designer as an ideation and editing tool rather than a complete replacement for a design department.
