“Nano Banana” was Google’s public name for Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, an image-generation and editing model announced on August 26, 2025. It focused on conversational editing, combining images, and keeping subjects consistent. What replaced it depends on where you use Google’s tools: Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2 are newer models, while Google’s developer guide recommends Nano Banana 2.1 for new projects.
What was Nano Banana?
“Nano Banana” began as an informal nickname, not the model’s official name. Google introduced Gemini 2.5 Flash Image under that name. It was an image-generation and editing model available through Google products and developer platforms, including the Gemini API and AI Studio.
Nano Banana was not simply a small, on-device “Gemini Nano” language model. It was a Gemini image model designed to create and modify images through text instructions and image references.

What changed in Gemini image editing?
Subject consistency
The model was designed to keep a subject’s characteristics more stable while changing a scene. As with image-generation tools generally, results depend on the source image, prompt, and complexity of the edit; consistency is not a promise of pixel-perfect identity preservation.
Natural-language changes
Instead of manually selecting pixels, users could ask Gemini to change a background, outfit, color, object, or setting. For example:
- “Change the background to a sunny beach but keep the person’s face, hairstyle, pose, and clothing unchanged.”
- “Replace the living-room wallpaper with a warm sage-green pattern while preserving the furniture.”
- “Remove the person in the background and reconstruct the area naturally.”
- “Turn this black-and-white photo into a color photograph while keeping the original composition.”
For painters and illustrators, the same approach can help explore a room’s color palette, test a mural concept on a wall, or develop references from a sketch. The result is a generated interpretation, not a precise color-proofing tool.
Combining multiple images
Nano Banana could combine image references into a composition. For example:
“Put the person from the first image beside the dog from the second image. Match the lighting and camera angle.”
This can be useful for mockups and concept development, but results may differ from the references.

Conversational iteration
The workflow was designed to continue across several turns. Users could ask for another adjustment, such as changing the lighting, widening the crop, simplifying the background, or modifying a color. Each new generation can alter details, so compare results with the original reference.
How to write better image-editing prompts
Strong prompts separate the requested change from details that should be preserved. Google’s image-generation guidance recommends describing the subject, action, scene, style, and output requirements, then refining the result iteratively.
- Identify the reference: “Use the person in the uploaded image…”
- State the change: “…and place them in a sunlit studio.”
- Protect important details: “Keep the face, hairstyle, clothing, pose, and proportions unchanged.”
- Specify visual direction: “Use soft morning light and a warm, realistic color palette.”
- Add output requirements: “Use a vertical composition with the subject centered.”
If an edit starts drifting, return to the cleanest original reference rather than repeatedly modifying a degraded result.
How do I use Nano Banana in Gemini?
Product labels and access can change, and the available models depend on the interface, account, and rollout. Check the current Gemini interface for image creation or editing options rather than assuming a particular mode or menu label.
- Open Gemini and look for its image creation or editing option.
- Upload an image or begin with a text prompt, if the option is available to your account.
- Describe what should change and what should remain unchanged.
- Review the result and use follow-up prompts to refine it.
Google’s launch announcement listed Gemini API and AI Studio for developers and Vertex AI for enterprise. Current access routes, quotas, and model choices can differ by product, region, account, and date; check Google’s current product documentation.

What developers need to know
The stable API model code for the original model is gemini-2.5-flash-image. Google lists gemini-2.5-flash-image-preview as a deprecated preview identifier. For new API projects, Google’s current developer image guide recommends Nano Banana 2.1; use the exact model label and code shown in the documentation for your target surface.

The model names do not map to one universal successor. Google’s current model descriptions distinguish the original from newer options:
| Name | Model | How Google positions it |
|---|---|---|
| Nano Banana | Gemini 2.5 Flash Image | Original conversational image-generation and editing model |
| Nano Banana Pro | Gemini 3 Pro Image | Complex compositions and higher visual sophistication |
| Nano Banana 2 | Gemini 3.1 Flash Image | Pro-level image generation and editing at Flash speed |
| Nano Banana 2.1 | Use the exact label in Google’s developer guide | Recommended there for new API projects |
For new integrations, consult Google’s current image-generation documentation rather than copying the original preview identifier.
What replaced the original Nano Banana?
There is no single replacement across every Google product. Google has presented Nano Banana Pro as an option for complex, high-quality compositions, while Nano Banana 2 is a newer Flash-family image model. A Workspace update described Nano Banana 2 replacing Nano Banana Pro across specified Gemini app options and user groups; that does not establish a universal change to every API, Cloud, or enterprise endpoint.

Pricing and access depend on the product
At launch, Google listed the original Gemini 2.5 Flash Image at $30 per 1 million output tokens, or an estimated $0.039 per image under the stated pricing basis. This is a historical figure from Google’s 2025 launch announcement, not verified current pricing.
Do not assume consumer Gemini app access, developer API pricing, and Google Cloud pricing are interchangeable. Check the current official pricing and product pages before estimating costs. Availability and quotas can also depend on region, account tier, and rollout.

Which tool should you choose?
- Gemini app: A convenient route for casual edits and quick concepts, subject to current availability.
- Google AI Studio: A route for developers experimenting with prompts and prototypes.
- Gemini API: A route for integrating image generation or editing into an application; consult current model documentation.
- Google Cloud: A route for enterprise and production workloads; check current service availability and terms.
- Photoshop or another traditional editor: Better suited to workflows that require layers, masks, exact retouching, or production control.
Nano Banana is a prompt-driven generative editor, not a universal Photoshop replacement. It can propose or regenerate images, while traditional software offers more direct control over edit boundaries and revisions.
Important limitations and risks
Identity and detail changes
A face, body, hairstyle, pet marking, or garment can change during editing. Compare results with the original and re-upload the clean source when needed.
Text and small details
Inspect generated letters, numbers, logos, labels, hands, and small objects. Do not rely on generated text for safety instructions, medical information, invoices, or regulated advertising without human review.
Edits can affect nearby areas
A request to remove an object can also change nearby lighting, shadows, or textures. If an edit must affect only a precisely defined area, consider a conventional editor with masks and layers.
Consent and responsible use
Obtain consent before editing someone’s likeness in a potentially misleading context, use only images you have the right to upload, and follow Google’s image-service documentation and prohibited-use requirements.

Bottom line
Nano Banana originally meant Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, a conversational image-generation and editing model. Newer options include Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2, while Google recommends Nano Banana 2.1 for new developer projects. “Replaced” depends on the product surface and use case, so check current official documentation before choosing a model.
