Yes. According to OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ, Free-plan users can create images in ChatGPT. The catch is that image generation has its own usage limit, separate from ordinary text chat, and paid plans receive higher limits. This status was checked against the supplied documentation on August 18, 2026; labels, limits, and rollout availability can change.
The feature discussed in newer coverage is generally the current ChatGPT Images experience, not necessarily the older GPT-4o or DALL·E workflows.
What became free?
Free ChatGPT users can ask ChatGPT to generate a new image from a text prompt without paying for a subscription. OpenAI lists Create images in ChatGPT among the Free plan’s capabilities.

- Image editing or transformation: You upload an image and request changes, where that capability is available on your account.
- ChatGPT Images: The newer image-generation experience and terminology used in current documentation.
- DALL·E: A legacy or alternate route that OpenAI’s image documentation has said remains accessible through the dedicated DALL·E GPT for eligible plans.
- Web-sourced images: Images shown in an answer from web search. These are not the same as AI-generated images.
OpenAI’s current Free Tier FAQ confirms free image creation and explains that image generation is separately rate-limited. OpenAI’s Free plan documentation is the best place to check the current account-specific behavior.
What does “improved image generation” refer to in 2026?
Many headlines trace back to OpenAI’s March 2025 announcement of native 4o Image Generation, which OpenAI said would roll out to Free and several paid plans. That announcement described improvements such as detailed instruction following, image-to-image transformation, photorealistic output, and text rendering.
For current terminology, however, avoid treating GPT-4o as the active ChatGPT image model. OpenAI’s release notes say GPT-4o was retired from ChatGPT on February 13, 2026. The newer experience is better described as ChatGPT Images, including the ChatGPT Images 2.0 system documented by OpenAI in April 2026.

- Adherence to complex instructions.
- Detailed compositions and more realistic, complex scenes.
- World knowledge useful for image prompts.
- Rendering of small or dense text.
- Reasoning over a request before generating an image in some modes.
- Tool-assisted workflows, including web search, where the applicable mode supports them.
- Generation of multiple images from one prompt in its documented thinking mode.
Those are capabilities described and evaluated in OpenAI’s system documentation, not guarantees that every output will be correct or that every Free account can use every mode. See the ChatGPT Images 2.0 system card for the technical and safety context.
How to generate an image for free
- Sign in to ChatGPT on the web or in the official mobile app.
- Start a new chat.
- Send a direct image request. You generally do not need to choose a separate image model when the default image experience is enabled.
- Wait for the generated result.
- Use the available controls to download, share, or request an edit.
Try a prompt such as:
Create a square product illustration of a red ceramic coffee mug on a pale blue background, with soft studio lighting, a clean modern style, and no text.For revisions, change one major thing at a time:
Keep the mug, background, lighting, and square composition. Make the mug slightly taller and change its handle to a simple round loop. Do not add any text or extra objects.If you do not see an image button, try sending the request directly. If it fails, confirm that you are signed in, update the app, try ChatGPT on the web, check your plan and displayed limits, and consult OpenAI’s current release notes or service-status information.

What are the Free plan limits?
Free image generation is not unlimited. OpenAI’s current FAQ does not publish one permanent quota that applies to every Free user. Instead, the applicable limit and reset timing may be shown inside your account.
Important points:
- Image creation has a separate limit from ordinary text messages.
- File uploads, data analysis, and other tools can have separate limits too.
- Free limits are stricter than paid-plan limits.
- The quota can change over time based on product conditions and plan policy.
- Do not assume that older claims such as “two images per day” or “three images per day” are universal current rules.
When you reach the limit, ChatGPT may display a notice explaining that image creation is temporarily unavailable and showing when access should reset. Your choices are to wait or upgrade. OpenAI says paid access can provide higher applicable usage rates, but a subscription does not remove every possible safety, capacity, or system restriction.
What do paid plans add?
The practical paid-plan advantage is more room to use the feature, not the basic ability to create an image. ChatGPT Plus and other paid plans may provide higher limits and, depending on the account, rollout, geography, and plan, broader access to advanced image modes.
ChatGPT’s pricing page lists Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. Check it directly before subscribing because prices, taxes, availability, plan names, and feature limits can change.
Free ChatGPT is usually enough for occasional illustrations, profile concepts, social graphics, school projects, brainstorming, and conversational experimentation.

A paid plan is more defensible when you regularly iterate, combine image work with writing or file analysis, or repeatedly hit the Free limit. It is not automatically the best choice for high-volume professional production.
ChatGPT Images versus DALL·E
The newer ChatGPT Images experience should not be treated as identical to the dedicated DALL·E GPT. OpenAI’s image help documentation has described DALL·E as an available route for Free, Plus, Business, and Pro users through its dedicated GPT, while ChatGPT’s default image workflow has continued to evolve separately.
There is a transition risk for anyone with older DALL·E conversations or saved images. A secondary report from Tom’s Guide said the DALL·E GPT was scheduled for retirement on August 30, 2026, while image generation would continue through the newer ChatGPT Images system. Because that report is not primary evidence and the date is already past, check OpenAI’s latest documentation and release notes rather than relying on either description. Download important legacy images now instead of assuming an old GPT or library view will remain available indefinitely.

What ChatGPT’s image generation does well
- Conversational iteration: You can describe a change in ordinary language instead of rebuilding a prompt from scratch.
- Complex instructions: The newer system is designed to handle more detailed subjects, layouts, and constraints.
- Text inside images: Text rendering is described as improved, which is useful for signs, labels, diagrams, and social graphics.
- Image transformation: Uploading an image and requesting changes may be available, although the exact experience is account- and rollout-dependent.
- Broader workflows: Image creation can sit alongside writing, research, uploaded files, and planning in one conversation.
Still, proofread every word in a generated graphic. “Improved text rendering” does not mean perfect spelling, typography, or layout.

Common problems and practical fixes
“I do not see an image option.”
Try a direct request such as “Create an image of…” rather than looking for a dedicated button. If that does not work, sign out and back in, update the mobile app, try the web interface, verify the account or workspace, and check whether the feature is temporarily unavailable or still rolling out to your account.
“The image is not what I asked for.”
Use a structured follow-up prompt:
- Name the subject first.
- Specify the composition and camera angle.
- State portrait, landscape, or square orientation.
- Write required text exactly.
- List exclusions, such as “no text, no extra people, no logo.”
- Request one edit at a time.
“It added a person, logo, or trademark.”
Image systems may refuse, modify, or limit requests involving real people, sensitive content, copyrighted characters, trademarks, or misleading depictions. The ChatGPT Images 2.0 documentation highlights risks involving realistic depictions and deepfakes of real people or events. Do not try to bypass a refusal; revise the request toward an allowed, non-deceptive use.
“My images disappeared.”
ChatGPT may store generated images in its Images or Library experience. OpenAI’s supplied documentation identifies 500 MB of Library storage for Free users. Download important work locally because interfaces, storage policies, and legacy GPT access can change.

Before using an output commercially, review OpenAI’s current terms and policies and consider copyright, publicity rights, trademarks, recognizable people, advertising rules, and rights connected to referenced works or styles.

Should you use ChatGPT or a dedicated image tool?
ChatGPT is strongest when image creation is part of a broader conversational task: developing a concept, writing the copy, analyzing an uploaded brief, producing several revisions, and planning how the image will be used.
A dedicated tool may be more suitable when you need:
- Predictable production volume and batch generation.
- Brand kits, templates, and layout controls.
- Advanced layer-based editing.
- Consistent characters or products across many assets.
- Team libraries, approvals, and production handoffs.
- Specialized API or automation access.
Examples include Adobe Firefly for Creative Cloud-centered workflows, Midjourney for highly stylized image making, Canva AI for graphics assembled directly into posts and presentations, and Google Gemini for users already invested in Google’s ecosystem. Verify each service’s current pricing, rights, limits, and model availability before choosing one.
