How to Take Better Blood Moon Photos With Your Phone: Lessons From the 2025 Lunar Eclipses

Stabilize your phone, focus on the Moon and take bracketed test shots as the eclipse darkens. A wider scene can make a more effective phone photo than a difficult lunar close-up.

To take better blood Moon photos with your phone, stabilize it, lock focus on the Moon, lower exposure if the disk turns white, and take a series of test shots as the Moon darkens. Use a timer to reduce shake, and compare exposures rather than relying on one frame. Phones are often strongest at capturing the red Moon in a wider scene; a telescope adapter is an optional route to more lunar detail if you already own a telescope.

The two total lunar eclipses of 2025 have passed, but the lessons apply to future eclipses too. Check local timing and visibility for your location before planning a shoot.

What a “blood Moon” actually is

“Blood Moon” is an informal name for a total lunar eclipse. During totality, the Moon passes completely into Earth’s darkest shadow, the umbra, and can appear red or orange. NASA explains that sunlight reaching the Moon has been filtered through Earth’s atmosphere: blue light scatters more readily, while redder light travels more directly. NASA explains the red-orange appearance here.

Totality is much dimmer than the bright full Moon. NASA’s Lunar Photography Guide says a total lunar eclipse is a thousand or more times dimmer than the full Moon. That change is why it helps to take test shots and adjust exposure as the eclipse progresses.

Which 2025 eclipse do you mean?

There were two total lunar eclipses in 2025. NASA lists their dates and totality times in Universal Time (UT); local dates and viewing windows varied by time zone and location.

Eclipse Totality in UT Local viewing
March 14, 2025 06:26–07:31 UT Visible from the Western Hemisphere; the local calendar date could be March 13 or 14.
September 7, 2025 17:31–18:53 UT Local date, visibility and visible phases depended on location.

These are not universal local schedules. For a future eclipse, use a location-specific source to check which phases will be visible where you are. NASA’s 2025 eclipse catalogue gives the event times in UT.

Why phone photos so often fail

Phones have small sensors and typically wide lenses, so the Moon may occupy only a small part of the frame. Automatic exposure can also make the bright lunar disk look like a white blob, while a long exposure can record camera movement. The Moon’s brightness changes substantially between a bright partial phase and totality, so the same exposure may not work throughout.

Rather than trying to make every phone produce a detailed close-up, decide whether you want lunar detail or a wider image that captures the atmosphere of the event. A phone can make a useful photo either way.

What you need

Simple phone setup

  • A phone with a clean camera lens.
  • A compact phone tripod with clamp, or another firm, stable support.
  • A timer or remote shutter to reduce shake when taking the picture.
  • Enough battery and storage for repeated shots.

A tripod is helpful, but you do not have to buy one: NASA says an improvised stable support can work. If using a tripod, secure the phone firmly before composing your shot. NASA’s smartphone astrophotography guide offers advice on support, timers and camera practice.

Optional telescope-assisted setup

If you already own a telescope, a smartphone eyepiece adapter can hold your phone in alignment with the eyepiece. NASA describes this as a method that takes practice. It is an optional way to pursue more detail, not a necessary purchase or a guaranteed result. NASA’s Lunar Photography Guide explains the approach.

Prepare before eclipse night

  1. Check your location. Confirm the eclipse timing and which phases will be visible from where you plan to watch.
  2. Choose your photo. Decide whether you want a Moon close-up or a wider scene with a tree, building, skyline or reflection.
  3. Practice on the Moon. Test your phone’s camera controls and support before eclipse night.
  4. Set up early. Compose the wider scene while you can still see your surroundings, and make sure the phone is stable.
  5. Take a few test shots. Learn how tapping the Moon affects focus and exposure in your camera app.

The phase-by-phase shooting plan

1. Before totality: start with test shots

Photograph the bright partial phase and check the results. Tap the Moon to focus, then reduce exposure if its disk looks like a featureless white blob. Camera controls differ, so use the controls available in your phone’s camera app rather than relying on a particular button sequence.

2. During totality: adjust and bracket

As the Moon darkens, take more test shots at different exposure levels. If your phone lets you lock focus, do so to prevent it drifting between frames. A longer exposure gathers more light, but increases the risk of blur; raising ISO can also brighten an image but add noise.

Keep the phone steady and use a timer rather than touching it as the picture is taken. NASA advises using a tripod and exposures of at least several seconds when photographing the March 2025 eclipse. Treat that as general guidance, not a guaranteed setting for every phone or moment of totality.

Approach What it can do Trade-off
Shorter exposure Can reduce blur from movement May leave the dim red Moon too dark
Longer exposure Gathers more light during totality Raises the risk of motion blur
Higher ISO Brightens the image without lengthening exposure as much Can add noise

3. After totality: keep taking pictures

As the Moon brightens, continue making test shots and adjust exposure as needed. Take multiple frames: NASA notes that shooting many photos increases the chance of getting one with steady air, a still phone and good focus.

Phone-only or telescope-assisted?

Approach Best suited to Trade-off
Phone-only, wider composition Capturing the atmosphere with trees, buildings or reflections The Moon may appear small in the frame.
Phone-only, closer framing Making the Moon more prominent using the phone’s available camera Phone lenses and sensors vary; a detailed close-up can be difficult.
Phone aimed through a telescope eyepiece Trying for more lunar detail if you already own a telescope Requires an adapter and practice to align the phone.

Do not assume a phone must produce a close-up to make a good eclipse photo. For many phones, a wider composition tells a stronger story and is easier to achieve.

Choose a composition that suits your phone

Wider scene

Include a recognizable foreground such as a tree, building, skyline or reflection. This emphasizes the event’s atmosphere rather than the Moon’s surface detail. Plan the composition before the sky gets dark.

Closer lunar view

A closer view can show more of the lunar disk, but phone hardware varies and detailed lunar photography can be challenging. A telescope adapter is an optional method for telescope owners; it takes practice to align the phone with the eyepiece.

During the shoot

  1. Turn off flash. Timeanddate advises switching it off because it disrupts the natural lighting.
  2. Keep the phone steady. Use a tripod or another stable support.
  3. Use a timer. A short delay helps avoid shake from pressing the shutter.
  4. Tap to focus on the Moon. Lock focus if your camera app allows it.
  5. Lower exposure if the Moon looks white. Take a test frame and check the result.
  6. Repeat at changing exposures. Keep shooting as the Moon darkens and brightens.
  7. Review your photos. Compare frames for sharpness and a visible red Moon.

After shooting, light processing can help, but editing cannot restore detail the sensor did not capture. NASA’s Lunar Photography Guide and smartphone astrophotography guide provide further advice on practice, focus, exposure and processing.

How do I take a picture of the blood Moon on my phone?

Mount the phone on a stable support, use a timer, tap the Moon to focus and lower exposure if the disk looks white. Take a series of shots at different exposures as the Moon darkens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the Moon turn red during an eclipse?

During totality, sunlight reaching the Moon has passed through Earth’s atmosphere. NASA explains that the atmosphere scatters blue light more readily, allowing redder light to travel through to the lunar surface.

Can my phone take a detailed close-up?

It depends on the phone and its camera hardware. Phones often work well for a wider scene that conveys the eclipse’s atmosphere. If you already own a telescope, a phone adapter is an optional approach to a closer view, but it takes practice.

Should I take one photo or a series?

Take a series. The Moon changes in brightness, and comparing test shots helps you find a useful exposure. Multiple frames also improve your chance of getting one with good focus and a steady phone.

What should I include in the picture?

Try a tree, building, skyline or reflection in a wider composition. This can make a stronger image than a small, tightly cropped Moon, particularly when using a phone.

The Bottom Line

For better blood Moon photos with a phone, keep the camera steady, use a timer, focus on the Moon and adjust exposure as it darkens. Take repeated test shots, and consider a wider composition if your phone cannot capture the close-up you want.
