Verdict: Picsart’s Background Remover is a capable AI cutout tool available in the iOS and Android apps and the Picsart Web Editor. Its main advantage is workflow: you can isolate a subject, refine the edges, replace the background, add text or design elements, and export from the same workspace. It is less compelling if you need only one transparent PNG and no further editing. Free access, export limits, trials, resolution, and premium features can vary, so check the current account and checkout flow before relying on it.
What is Picsart Background Remover?
Picsart Background Remover uses AI to separate the apparent foreground subject from the original background. The removed area becomes transparent, while the original image remains available as a new editable layer rather than being overwritten. You can then keep the transparency or continue designing around the cutout.
The feature is part of Picsart’s broader editor, not necessarily a separate consumer application. It is available in the Picsart mobile apps and Web Editor.

- Background removal: isolates the subject and makes the original background transparent.
- Background replacement: places the cutout over a color, stock image, or uploaded image.
- AI background generation: creates a new scene from a prompt or suggested concept.
- Manual refinement: uses Erase and Restore to correct the automatic selection.
Picsart also sells a separate Remove & Change Background API for programmatic workflows. The API is a different product from the consumer editor, with separate authentication, credits, limits, formats, and error handling.
How to remove a background in Picsart
On iOS and Android
- Open the Picsart app.
- Tap the plus sign (+) and upload your image.
- Find and tap Remove BG in the bottom toolbar.
- Wait for the automatic cutout.
- Inspect the edges, especially hair, fingers, straps, gaps, handles, and shoes.
- Use Erase to remove remnants of the old background.
- Use Restore to recover subject details that the AI removed.
- Leave the background transparent or add a replacement.
- Export the finished design.
The exact location of controls can change between app versions and account states. If the label is not visible, select the image layer and check the contextual toolbar or object properties.
In the Web Editor
- Open the Picsart Web Editor and upload an image.
- Select the image on the canvas.
- Click Remove Background in the top toolbar.
- Wait for the automatic cutout.
- Correct the selection with Erase and Restore.
- Download the transparent result or continue editing it.
Removing the background from an added layer
To isolate a secondary image, sticker, or object, add it to the canvas, select that layer, and use the Remove BG shortcut near the selected object or in its object properties. This is useful when building a collage or product graphic from several assets.

What can you do after removal?
A transparent cutout is usually only the midpoint of the workflow. Picsart lets you:
- Place the subject over a solid color.
- Add a stock or uploaded background.
- Create an AI-generated scene from a prompt.
- Add templates, text, stickers, effects, and branding.
- Build a social post, thumbnail, collage, listing image, or promotional graphic.
- Continue treating the isolated subject as an editable layer.

Generated backgrounds should be judged separately from the cutout. A clean mask does not guarantee that a new scene will match the subject’s scale, perspective, lighting, or shadow direction.

How good is Picsart’s cutout quality?
Picsart’s documentation recommends high-contrast images, clear edges, and a relatively uncluttered background. That is a sensible expectation for AI segmentation generally: the tool can be useful, but it is not a guarantee of pixel-perfect results.

Where it should work best
- A single person against a reasonably clear background.
- Products with hard, visible edges.
- Clothing and objects with strong contrast.
- Cars, furniture, and animals with a distinct silhouette.
- Sharp, well-lit images in which the subject occupies a meaningful part of the frame.
Picsart’s API documentation specifically lists people, animals, products, apparel, cars, and furniture as use cases.
Where careful inspection is essential
- Hair, fur, feathers, lace, mesh, smoke, and steam.
- Glass, transparent packaging, reflective products, and translucent fabric.
- Shadows that should remain attached to a product.
- Subjects overlapping other objects.
- Low-light, blurry, compressed, or low-resolution photos.
- Multiple people or objects when only one should be selected.
- Camouflage, low-contrast clothing, and subjects touching the image boundary.
These are not reasons to reject the tool outright. They are reasons to zoom in and use Restore and Erase before exporting. For important catalog, advertising, or portrait work, review the cutout against both a light and a dark replacement background; halos and missing details are easier to spot that way.
Output formats: transparent PNG versus a white background
Picsart promotes transparent PNG output and continued editing on its Background Remover page. The practical choice depends on the destination:
- Transparent PNG: best when the subject will be placed into another design.
- White-background JPG or PNG: useful for product listings, documents, and catalogs requiring a uniform backdrop.
- WEBP: useful for web delivery when the destination supports it.
A transparent PNG is not the same as a white-background image. If a supposedly transparent result appears white, check whether it was exported as JPG, whether a white layer was added, or whether the destination app displays transparency against white.
Free versus paid: what do you actually get?
The word “free” needs qualification. Picsart’s public Background Remover page promotes free use but also presents a seven-day subscription trial. That does not by itself establish that every user gets unlimited processing, unrestricted high-resolution exports, premium refinement, or a permanently free workflow.

Before subscribing or preparing a production workflow, distinguish between:
- Being able to open the tool.
- Processing an image.
- Downloading a transparent result.
- Export resolution and file format.
- Access to premium editing or AI features.
- Trial duration and cancellation terms.
- Commercial-use and content-licensing conditions.
Do not assume that a free trial, a free edit, and a free high-resolution export mean the same thing. Verify the live export screen while logged out and logged in if the distinction matters.
Current consumer pricing
On the Picsart pricing page, the price observed on August 18, 2026 was $10.50 per month for Pro when billed yearly, with a displayed $15 monthly-equivalent figure, and $37.50 per month for Ultra when billed yearly per seat, with a displayed $47 figure. The page advertised annual-billing savings of up to 30%.
These are not universal month-to-month prices. Taxes, geography, platform, promotions, billing mode, and account status can change the amount. Check the total on the live checkout screen before purchasing.
The same page listed Pro features including broader photo and video editing, advanced background and object removal, bulk editing for up to 50 images, and 100 GB of cloud storage. Ultra listed bulk editing for up to 100 images and 300 GB per seat. Because the comparison covers the broader editor, confirm the current terms if you need a specific background-removal batch quota.
Picsart Background Remover API
The API is aimed at ecommerce platforms, agencies, catalog systems, and automation workflows rather than occasional personal edits. Its documented capabilities include cutouts or masks, background colors or images, blur, sizing, scaling, automatic centering, strokes, and shadows.

Troubleshooting common problems
Remove BG is missing
Select the image layer, make sure you are in the full editor rather than a limited preview, update the app, and confirm that you are signed into the intended account. Also check the contextual toolbar and object-properties menu. UI labels may move between versions.
The tool removed part of the subject
Use Restore around hair, fingers, thin straps, gaps between limbs, handles, shoe edges, and translucent areas. Zoom in before painting and inspect the result against a contrasting background.

Use Erase at higher zoom. If contrast is weak, improving the source image—through better lighting, a cleaner background, or a tighter crop—may produce a better result than repeatedly correcting a poor mask.

The edge has a halo
Try a higher-resolution source, manually erase the perimeter, reduce enlargement after export, and test the cutout on a contrasting background. A smaller subject inside the final layout can also make a minor fringe less noticeable.
The wrong object was isolated
Crop closer to the intended subject, use a cleaner image, or add the object as a separate layer and invoke Remove BG on that selected layer.
An API request fails
Check the X-Picsart-API-Key header, supported format, file size, credits or billing status, rate limits, and image-source parameters. For temporary server errors, retry according to your application’s backoff policy rather than sending a rapid stream of duplicate requests.

Do not assume that background removal automatically answers questions about retention, training use, generated-background ownership, customer-image handling, or commercial rights. Those conditions can depend on current Picsart terms, privacy policies, product type, and enterprise agreement. Review the applicable Terms of Use and Privacy Policy before uploading confidential customer images or building a commercial pipeline.
Final verdict
Choose Picsart if you want background removal as part of a larger creative workflow—especially social posts, thumbnails, collages, product graphics, or mobile-first editing. Its practical strength is the path from subject isolation to finished design, including replacement images and AI-generated scenes.
Choose a dedicated service such as remove.bg if the job is primarily fast cutouts, batch processing, or an automation-first workflow. Choose Adobe Express or Canva when your team already works in those ecosystems, and use Photoshop when manual compositing precision matters more than speed.
For hair, fur, glass, shadows, low-contrast subjects, or high-volume product work, test representative images before paying or integrating. Picsart is a useful editor-integrated remover—not a reason to skip quality control.
