If you can’t drag a file into Photoshop, first confirm you’re dragging it from Finder or Windows Explorer onto an open Photoshop document. To keep working without the drag gesture, use File > Place Embedded or File > Place Linked. If neither approach works, identify the source, destination, file type, and Photoshop version before trying broader diagnostics.
Identify what you’re dragging
Dragging an image file into a document is different from moving a layer between documents or dragging an item from another application. Adobe documents dragging files from Finder or Windows Explorer onto an open document. If your source or destination is different, note that when troubleshooting.

Place a file without dragging
- Open the Photoshop document where you want to add the file.
- Choose File > Place Embedded or File > Place Linked.
- Select the file and follow Photoshop’s on-canvas placement controls.
- Adjust its position or size if needed, then press Enter on Windows or Return on macOS to commit.
Adobe documents both menu commands as alternatives for placing a file. The placed content is a Smart Object by default. If you specifically need a raster layer, select the Smart Object layer, right-click it, and choose Rasterize Layer.

If dragging still fails
- Try placing a different file from Finder or Windows Explorer onto an open document.
- Check whether the menu placement command works with the same file.
- Note the operating system and version, Photoshop version, file type, source application or folder, and whether the destination document was open.
- If other Photoshop controls also misbehave, consider Adobe’s general diagnostics: update Photoshop, reset preferences, check graphics drivers, or temporarily skip optional or third-party plug-ins. These are broad troubleshooting checks, not confirmed fixes for every drag-and-drop problem.
- On macOS, check Photoshop’s file permissions when symptoms suggest a file-access issue. Adobe’s general guidance discusses Full Disk Access, but permissions are not established as the cause of every failed drag.
For persistent problems, give Adobe Support the details you collected and say whether dragging, menu placement, or both fail.

Can I place a file in Photoshop without dragging it?
Yes. Open the destination document and choose File > Place Embedded or File > Place Linked, then select the file and commit its placement.
What happens when I place a file in Photoshop?
Adobe says placed files are Smart Objects by default. If you need a raster layer, select the placed layer, right-click it, and choose Rasterize Layer.

What information should I provide if the problem continues?
Share your operating system and version, Photoshop version, file type and source, destination document state, and whether menu placement works. These details help distinguish a file-placement problem from a different drag workflow.
