Best Adobe Alternatives for Design in 2025—and What Changed After Affinity Became Free

The best Adobe alternative depends on your workflow: Affinity is the broadest replacement, Figma leads UI/UX, CorelDRAW suits print, and Inkscape and GIMP provide a free open-source stack.

There is no single replacement for Adobe Creative Cloud. The best alternative depends on the Adobe app and the work you need to do. For the broadest professional substitute, choose Affinity. For UI/UX and collaborative product design, choose Figma. For print, signage, and packaging, consider CorelDRAW Graphics Suite. For a free open-source setup, combine Inkscape with GIMP.

This article uses “2025” deliberately: Affinity was generally treated as a paid one-time-purchase alternative through most of that year, but Canva announced on October 29, 2025, that the all-new Affinity would be free forever. The current recommendation therefore differs from much of the older 2025 coverage.

Quick verdict

Need Best choice Why
Broad Adobe replacement Affinity Combines vector, raster, and layout workspaces in one desktop application and became free after Canva’s October 2025 relaunch.
Illustrator-style vector work Affinity Strong Bézier, shape, path, and vector/raster tools without the traditional Adobe subscription.
UI/UX and prototypes Figma Real-time collaboration, components, libraries, prototyping, and developer handoff.
Print, signage, or packaging CorelDRAW Mature vector, layout, color, and production-oriented features.
Free vector design Inkscape Free, open source, cross-platform, and SVG-native.
Free photo editing GIMP Free, open source, local raster editing for Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux.
Marketing graphics Canva Templates, brand controls, stock content, resizing, and easy team collaboration.
Mac-first product design Sketch Native Mac authoring with prototyping, sharing, and developer handoff.

For many freelancers and small teams, the most practical setup is Affinity plus Figma, with one Adobe seat retained temporarily for files or plugins that do not convert reliably.

Adobe is not one application

“Adobe alternative” can mean several different things. Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, XD, and Express solve different problems, so a tool that replaces one may be a poor substitute for another.

Adobe product Strong alternatives
Illustrator Affinity, CorelDRAW, Inkscape, Figma, Sketch
Photoshop Affinity Photo or Pixel tools, GIMP, Photopea, Krita
InDesign Affinity Publisher or Layout tools, Scribus, Canva for simpler documents
XD Figma, Sketch, Penpot
Express Canva, VistaCreate, Visme
Creative Cloud A combination of several specialist applications

No single application fully reproduces Adobe’s complete combination of cross-app integration, fonts, plugins, scripts, established production standards, and client compatibility.

What changed during 2025?

For most of 2025, Affinity Designer 2 was commonly described as a paid one-time-purchase alternative. Creative Bloq listed historical prices of $69.99 for desktop and $18.49 for iPad, but those figures should not be treated as current.

On October 29, 2025, Canva announced the all-new Affinity. Canva says it combines Vector, Pixel, and Layout workspaces, is free forever, supports formats including PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML, and was initially available for Mac and Windows, with iPad described as coming soon. See Canva’s announcement for the company’s current product details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That announcement changed Affinity’s position substantially. It is now the strongest broad Adobe alternative for many individual designers, but free does not mean identical to Adobe. Test your own files, fonts, plugins, color workflows, and export requirements before cancelling anything.

Best overall: Affinity

Affinity is the closest general-purpose replacement for designers who need vector illustration, image editing, and page layout but do not need every Adobe-specific integration. Its Vector, Pixel, and Layout workspaces make it especially appealing to freelancers, illustrators, small studios, and small businesses trying to reduce software costs.

Why choose it

  • Vector, raster, and layout capabilities are available in one design environment.
  • Canva says the current application supports PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, IDML, and other formats.
  • The core application became free after the October 2025 announcement.
  • It is primarily a desktop workflow, which suits local files and offline work better than browser-first tools.
  • It can reduce the need to assemble separate applications for everyday design work.

Where it falls short

Format support is not the same as perfect round-trip compatibility. An imported Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign file may contain effects, fonts, links, blend modes, live text, Smart Objects, symbols, or plugins that do not behave identically. Adobe’s wider ecosystem and installed-base compatibility remain important advantages for agencies and production teams.

Canva also says premium Canva users receive Canva AI tools inside Affinity. Treat that as a separate plan consideration: identify the specific AI feature, account requirement, and any usage limits rather than assuming every Canva capability is included for free.

Choose Affinity if: you want the broadest non-Adobe desktop design stack, work mainly with vector, raster, and layout projects, and can validate your file conversions.

Do not switch completely if: clients require native Adobe files, your workflow depends on Adobe plugins or scripts, or your printer has approved only an Adobe-based production pipeline.

Best for UI/UX: Figma

Figma is the strongest Adobe alternative for interface design, product design, prototypes, shared libraries, and developer handoff. It is not a like-for-like Illustrator replacement and is a weak choice for complex illustration or CMYK-heavy print production.

Best features for product teams

  • Real-time collaboration in shared files.
  • Components, styles, and libraries for design systems.
  • Interactive prototypes and flows.
  • Comments and review workflows.
  • Developer inspection and handoff.
  • Browser access alongside desktop access.

Figma’s official pricing page lists a free Starter tier. Its listed Professional prices include $16 per month for a full seat, $12 for a Dev seat, and $3 for a Collab seat; Organization full seats are listed at $55 per month when billed annually. Prices are in USD and can vary by geography, taxes, billing method, plan changes, and seat type. Check the current pricing page before budgeting.

Important trade-offs

Figma’s cloud-centered model is excellent for distributed teams but may be unsuitable when confidential files must remain local, internet access is unreliable, or an organization requires self-hosting or strict data-residency controls. Review permissions, ownership, export policies, offline behavior, and account requirements before moving a team.

Best for print and production: CorelDRAW Graphics Suite

CorelDRAW remains a serious choice for traditional design, signage, packaging, illustration, and businesses already using Corel workflows. Its official product page presents a suite rather than just one vector editor, so compare the exact applications and license terms included in your edition.

  • WIRELESS FREEDOM: use Intuos Pro with USB or connect wirelessly via Bluetooth to multiple computers with a simple switch

CorelDRAW is worth considering when your work depends on vector precision, page composition, color handling, large-format output, or established print practices. It may also offer subscription and perpetual-license options depending on the edition and market.

Verify Windows and Mac feature parity, current regional pricing, supported file formats, and the exact prepress features your printer requires. CorelDRAW is usually a better fit for production-oriented work than browser-first tools, but it is more expensive than free alternatives and is less common than Adobe in some agency environments.

Best free and open-source vector editor: Inkscape

Inkscape is free, open source, cross-platform, and built around SVG. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it particularly useful for students, educators, hobbyists, budget-conscious designers, and Linux users.

Its path, shape, text, tracing, and SVG tools can handle a large range of logos, illustrations, diagrams, and web graphics. It is a genuine vector editor, not merely a template tool.

The compromises are polish, performance on complex documents, commercial support, and Adobe-specific compatibility. AI, EPS, and PDF files may require careful import or export testing, and advanced print workflows should be verified with the printer. Inkscape is a strong zero-cost Illustrator alternative, but it is not a guaranteed replacement for every agency or prepress pipeline.

Best free raster editor: GIMP

GIMP is the free, open-source alternative for raster editing and photo manipulation—not for vector illustration or page layout. It supports Windows, macOS, and GNU/Linux and works well for retouching, compositing, selections, masks, color adjustments, and general image editing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GIMP’s local workflow and broad community are major advantages. However, users coming from Photoshop should assess differences in smart-object-style workflows, CMYK handling, color management, automation, and plugin compatibility. The official download page listed GIMP 3.2.4 as the current stable release on April 17, 2026; that is a 2026 fact, not a version claim about 2025. See GIMP’s download page for the current release.

Best for marketing teams and non-designers: Canva

Canva is excellent for template-led social graphics, presentations, simple brochures, branded posts, and marketing teams with many non-designers. Its strengths are speed, templates, stock assets, brand controls, browser collaboration, resizing, and easy publishing.

It should not be presented as a full InDesign or Illustrator replacement. Canva is less suitable for precision vector illustration, complex prepress, packaging dielines, spot colors, overprint, trapping, and long-form professional publishing. Review the current regional pricing, asset licensing terms, storage, account requirements, and team controls before adoption.

Best Mac-first UI tool: Sketch

Sketch is a Mac-first UI/UX and prototyping application. Its native Mac authoring environment is useful for designers who want a local application, while browser access supports previews, feedback, version history, and developer handoff.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sketch’s pricing page lists a 30-day free trial and, when billed yearly, $12 per editor per month for Standard, $24 for Professional, and $44 for Enterprise. Confirm current terms at Sketch’s pricing page.

Sketch is not a general replacement for Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign. It is a particularly good fit for Mac-based product teams, but not for Windows-first authoring, complex illustration, or broad print production.

Choosing by design discipline

Brand identity and illustration

Prioritize Bézier editing, Boolean operations, shape building, brushes, patterns, symmetry, variable strokes, color libraries, and SVG/PDF/EPS export. Affinity, CorelDRAW, and Inkscape are the strongest candidates. Test spot colors, fonts, transparency, gradients, and printer requirements before delivery.

UI/UX and product design

Prioritize components, auto layout, prototypes, shared libraries, comments, version history, design tokens, permissions, and developer handoff. Figma is the default recommendation; Sketch is compelling for Mac-first teams, and Penpot is another option to investigate.

  • CONNECTION: includes USB-C cable to connect to Windows/Mac computers with DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 3 or 4 input (computers without DP Alt or TB 3 or 4 input require additional cables)

Photo editing and compositing

Prioritize RAW processing, layers, masks, selections, retouching, non-destructive adjustments, color correction, and plugin support. Affinity’s Pixel tools, GIMP, Photopea, and Krita may cover different portions of the Photoshop workflow. Keep Photoshop when a project depends on Adobe-specific plugins, Smart Objects, or advanced production features.

Page layout and publishing

Prioritize master pages, paragraph and character styles, tables, long documents, book files, preflight, PDF/X, font embedding, and InDesign import. Affinity Publisher or Layout tools and Scribus are the serious alternatives. Canva is suitable for simpler marketing documents, not a blanket replacement for long-form publishing.

Print, signage, and packaging

Ask whether the application supports the exact combination of CMYK, spot colors, overprint, bleed, crop marks, PDF/X, font embedding, large-format output, dielines, and printer profiles your job requires. CorelDRAW and Affinity are the leading candidates in this group. Retain Adobe when a client, printer, or vendor specifically requires native Adobe production files.

File compatibility: opening a file is not the same as preserving it

Before switching, test representative files in .ai, .psd, .pdf, .svg, .eps, .indd, and .idml formats. Also test fonts, linked images, clipping masks, live text, transparency, blends, effects, symbols, components, Smart Objects, profiles, and plugins.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Vendor claims that a program supports AI or PSD confirm import or export availability; they do not guarantee lossless editing or round-tripping. A file may open while silently flattening transparency, substituting fonts, breaking links, converting live text, changing blend modes, or losing plugin-dependent effects.

Keep Adobe installed during migration until you have opened, checked, and exported real client files. Where possible, preserve the original file, package fonts and linked assets legally, and deliver a PDF or other agreed production format rather than assuming the recipient can edit an alternative application’s native file.

Professional checks before committing

  • Color: Test ICC profiles, CMYK conversion, spot colors, separations, overprint, and proofing.
  • Typography: Check OpenType features, variable fonts, font embedding, missing-font substitution, RTL, Indic, and CJK scripts.
  • Output: Confirm bleed, trim, crop marks, PDF/X, accessible PDFs, SVG behavior, and web exports.
  • Editing: Check non-destructive adjustments, masks, tracing, path operations, symbols, components, and batch export.
  • Operations: Review offline behavior, version history, recovery, backups, permissions, localization, accessibility, and vendor support.
  • Automation: Identify whether your scripts, plugins, integrations, and repetitive production tasks still work.

A practical migration plan

  1. Inventory your work. List the Adobe applications, file types, fonts, plugins, scripts, templates, libraries, and production vendors you rely on.
  2. Separate must-haves from habits. Identify features that are genuinely required rather than simply familiar.
  3. Build a migration test pack. Include a logo sheet, complex illustration, CMYK brochure, multipage document, photo composite, and final PDF.
  4. Compare at 100 percent. Check text, masks, links, gradients, effects, colors, image resolution, and page geometry.
  5. Ask the printer or client. Confirm required formats, PDF/X settings, spot colors, profiles, and native-file expectations.
  6. Train collaborators. Document where assets live, how files are named, how reviews happen, and how final exports are approved.
  7. Keep backups and an exception path. Retain original Adobe files and, if necessary, one Adobe seat for difficult legacy or client work.
  8. Recalculate after six and twelve months. Include training, conversion, fonts, stock assets, AI credits, storage, administration, and retained licenses—not just the application price.

When staying with Adobe is rational

Adobe remains the sensible choice when your clients, printers, collaborators, or archives require native Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign files; when you rely on Adobe fonts, plugins, scripts, or cross-application libraries; or when conversion risk costs more than the subscription.

The current US individual pricing page lists Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and After Effects at $22.99 per month on annual-billed-monthly plans, while Creative Cloud Standard is listed at $54.99 per month on an annual-billed-monthly plan. Prices, promotions, taxes, regions, and plan terms change, so verify them at Adobe’s official pricing page.
