Krita 5.3.3 is the recommended stable release for productive work, according to the Krita project, as of August 18, 2026. Download it free from the official Krita website. Windows users need a 64-bit system, macOS users need macOS 10.15 Catalina or later, and the Android version is beta software intended for tablets and compatible Chromebooks—not phones. Krita 6.0.3 is available as a more experimental option, but it is not the best default for most users.
Choose the correct Krita download

Start with the official download page. For the 5.3.3 release files, use the project’s release announcement or the official KDE download directory.
Is Krita really free?
Yes. Krita is free and open-source software released under the GPLv3-or-later license. The direct Windows, macOS and Linux downloads do not require a subscription, activation fee or trial payment. The core Android application is also available free of charge.
Paid editions in the Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store and Mac App Store are optional. They generally provide store-managed installation and updates while helping fund Krita’s development; they are not required to unlock the normal desktop application. Download Krita for Windows
For most Windows users, choose the 64-bit Windows Installer. The 5.3.3 release includes krita-x64-5.3.3-setup.exe. A portable ZIP, krita-x64-5.3.3.zip, is also available.
Install the Windows version
- Open the official Krita download page.
- Select Windows Installer and download the 64-bit file.
- Open the
.exefile and approve the Windows security prompt after checking that it came from Krita’s official source. - Follow the setup wizard.
- Launch Krita from the Start menu or its shortcut.
There is no current 32-bit Windows build. The official download page lists Windows 8.1 or later for the desktop release. The Microsoft Store edition requires Windows 10 or later.
Use the portable ZIP
- Download the 64-bit portable ZIP.
- Right-click it and choose Extract All.
- Extract it to a permanent folder, such as
DocumentsKrita Portable. - Open the extracted folder and double-click the Krita executable.
The portable copy does not use the normal installation process and can coexist with an installed copy. Separate copies may still share settings and custom resources, so check which shortcut you are launching and back up important presets before changing installations. Portable builds may not automatically provide Windows Explorer file previews; Krita’s official Windows Shell Extension can help if previews matter.
Download Krita for macOS
Krita 5.3.3 requires macOS 10.15 Catalina or newer. Macs running Mojave or earlier cannot use this release. The official site provides a signed macOS DMG suitable for supported Intel and Apple Silicon Macs through the project’s supported packaging and compatibility arrangements.
Install Krita on a Mac
- Visit krita.org/en/download.
- Choose macOS Installer and download the signed
.dmg. - Open the disk image and drag Krita to the Applications folder.
- Eject the disk image.
- Open Krita from Applications.
If macOS blocks the first launch, verify that the DMG came from Krita.org. Then open System Settings → Privacy & Security and use Open Anyway if macOS offers it. Do not disable Gatekeeper broadly or install a replacement DMG from an unofficial download site.

The Mac App Store version is separate from the direct DMG and may have different sandboxing and update behavior. Krita is not available for iPhone or iPad.
Download Krita for Linux
The easiest upstream Linux option is the official 64-bit AppImage. It avoids depending on a distribution package and usually gives you the latest upstream desktop build.

Run the AppImage
- Download the 64-bit AppImage from Krita.org.
- Open a terminal in the download folder.
- Make it executable:
chmod +x krita-5.3.3-x86_64.AppImage- Launch it:
./krita-5.3.3-x86_64.AppImageDepending on your desktop environment, you can instead open the file’s properties and enable Allow executing file as a program.
Flatpak, Snap and distribution packages
Krita’s download page also points to Flatpak through Flathub, Snap and distribution packages. These options can integrate more neatly with application menus and package updates, but their release timing and maintenance differ. Flatpak and Snap packages are community-maintained according to Krita’s download information, and sandboxing may affect access to files, plugins or hardware.
If the AppImage does nothing, first check its execute permission. If you use AppImageLauncher, test without it: the 5.3.3 release notes warn that some recent AppImage runtime updates can conflict with some AppImageLauncher versions. If problems continue, try a Flatpak or distribution package and consult the Krita installation documentation.

Download Krita for Android
Important: Krita for Android is beta software intended for tablets and compatible Chromebooks. It is not designed for Android phones. A phone may therefore not show Krita in Google Play, and that is expected.
For the simplest installation, use the official Google Play listing linked from Krita’s download page. The project also publishes official APKs for supported 64-bit Intel, 64-bit ARM and 32-bit ARM devices.
Install an official APK
- Download the APK only from an official Krita or KDE source.
- Confirm that its architecture matches your tablet.
- If Android requests it, temporarily allow installation from the trusted source.
- Install the APK, then disable that unknown-source permission again when appropriate.
Do not use APK mirror sites or apps that merely include “Krita” in their names. The Krita project cannot guarantee the safety of APKs from other sources.
Krita 6.0.3 is not functional on Android, so Android users should stay with the 5.3.3 line. In the 5.3.3 Android release, animation import and export were removed while replacement functionality is developed. Optional supporter packs and resource bundles are not required for core features.

- Memory: 4 GB minimum; 16 GB recommended.
- Graphics: OpenGL 3.0 or higher, or Direct3D 11.
- Linux: Requirements vary with the distribution and packaging method.
- Tablet: Any graphics tablet compatible with the operating system.
Four gigabytes of RAM may be enough to launch Krita, but large canvases, many layers and animation are substantially more comfortable with 16 GB. A graphics tablet is optional: Krita works with a mouse, trackpad or touchscreen, while pressure-sensitive painting requires compatible hardware.

Choose Krita 5.3.3 Stable for professional work, school assignments, animation projects, older hardware, plugins, scripts or any situation where reliability matters. The project describes the 6.x line as more experimental because of its Qt 6 transition.
Krita 6.0.3 may be appropriate for advanced users who specifically want to test the newer line. It is not the default recommendation for production, and it is not the Android choice. Keep your working 5.3.3 installation until the newer version is confirmed compatible, and back up important .kra files and custom resources before switching.

Buying Krita through Steam, the Microsoft Store, Epic Games Store or Mac App Store is generally a convenience and development-support choice, not a requirement to use Krita. Store prices vary, so check the relevant listing before purchasing. You can also support the project through the Krita Development Fund.

Download safety and checksum verification
Use Krita’s website, its official release announcement or the KDE download mirror. Avoid cracked installers, unofficial download portals, search advertisements offering suspicious “Krita free download” files and third-party APK sites.

For higher assurance, compare the downloaded file’s checksum with the hash published in the release directory’s Details section. For example, on Linux:
sha256sum krita-5.3.3-x86_64.AppImageThe expected value must come from the official Krita 5.3.3 release directory. A matching checksum helps detect corruption or an altered download; it is not a substitute for downloading from a trusted source.
Common problems after downloading
Windows says the file is unsafe
Check the filename and confirm that you downloaded it from Krita.org. If Windows SmartScreen still warns, do not disable antivirus protection generally; verify the source and publisher information first.

Confirm your operating-system version, Windows 64-bit compatibility, available disk space and whether the download completed. Also check whether antivirus software quarantined the installer or whether a store edition requires a newer operating system.
The Mac says Krita cannot be opened
Verify the DMG source, then check System Settings → Privacy & Security for the Open Anyway option. A Mac running macOS 10.14 or earlier cannot run Krita 5.3.3.
The Linux AppImage does nothing
Run chmod +x on the file, then launch it from a terminal so an error message is visible. If AppImageLauncher is installed, test without it or switch to an official Flatpak or distribution package.
My brushes or settings disappeared
Different installations and portable copies can use different resource locations. Before uninstalling or replacing Krita, back up custom brushes, presets, workspaces, templates, palettes, keyboard shortcuts, scripts and important .kra source files.
