You usually do not turn on an XP-Pen stylus. Many XP-Pen drawing pens are battery-free EMR styluses with no power button, charging port, or Bluetooth pairing. Turn on and connect the tablet or pen display, install the correct driver when needed, then hover the pen over the active area.
Do you need to activate an XP-Pen stylus?
For common battery-free models—including the P05/P05S, PA2, and X3 Pro Smart Chip Stylus—there is nothing to switch on or charge. The tablet detects the stylus through electromagnetic resonance (EMR) and supplies the sensing system wirelessly.
Buttons on the pen are shortcut controls, not power buttons. They may be assigned to functions such as eraser, right-click, or brush size, but pressing or holding them does not activate the stylus.

The main qualification is that XP-Pen sells several device-specific pens and accessories. Check your exact tablet and stylus model rather than assuming every XP-Pen pen is interchangeable.
How to start using an XP-Pen stylus
- Identify the tablet model. Find the model name on the tablet, display, box, or manual. Record the stylus model too if it is listed.
- Connect the tablet. Plug a pen tablet into the computer. For a pen display, connect power, USB, and the display-signal cable as required by that model.
- Turn on the tablet or display. A pen display may have a physical power button and indicator light. This powers the display—not the passive stylus.
- Install the model-specific driver if required. Download it from XP-Pen’s official driver center, selecting the exact product and operating system. Some standalone devices and operating systems may work without the desktop driver, but the driver is important for pressure, button mapping, calibration, and other settings.
- Hover the pen over the active area. The cursor should follow the stylus before the nib touches the surface. Then touch down and draw in an application.
- Test pressure and buttons. Open the XP-Pen driver and use its pressure-test area. Confirm pressure changes as you press harder, then test the pen buttons separately.
Charging and Bluetooth: what applies?
| Component | Does it usually need power or pairing? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Battery-free drawing stylus | No charging or Bluetooth pairing | Use it after the compatible tablet is powered and recognized. |
| Pen tablet or pen display | May need USB power, an adapter, and—on supported models—a wireless connection | Follow the device manual for power and connection. |
| Magic Drawing Pad stylus | No separate power supply or Bluetooth pairing | Pick it up and draw once the pad is ready. See the Magic Drawing Pad manual. |
| Wireless shortcut remote | Yes, if the accessory supports wireless operation | Use its own switch and pairing instructions; it is not the drawing pen. |
For example, the ACK05 Wireless Shortcut Remote uses a six-second press of its K11 key to enter Bluetooth pairing mode. That instruction does not apply to an ordinary XP-Pen stylus.
How to tell whether the pen is working
Test the input path in this order:
- With the tablet connected, open the XP-Pen driver.
- Hover the pen over the active area. If the cursor follows it, the tablet is sensing the pen.
- Press the nib in the driver’s pressure-test area. Confirm that the pressure indicator responds.
- Test the pen buttons and verify their assigned functions.
- Open your drawing application and make a pressure-sensitive stroke.
| Symptom | Most useful area to investigate |
|---|---|
| No cursor movement anywhere | Tablet connection, power, pen compatibility, driver, or damaged stylus |
| Cursor moves but pressure does not | Driver, application pressure settings, Windows Ink, or application support |
| Pressure works in the driver but not the art app | The application’s tablet-input or pressure configuration |
| Cursor is offset | Display mapping or calibration |
| Display is completely black | Power, USB, video cable, input source, or computer recognition—not necessarily the pen |
| Only pen buttons fail | Button mapping, driver profile, or a damaged button |
| Pen works intermittently | Cable, USB power, driver conflict, physical damage, or a worn nib |
What to do if the XP-Pen stylus does not work
1. Confirm compatibility first
A physically similar replacement pen may use a different sensing technology and still be incompatible. Compare your tablet with XP-Pen’s official stylus catalog and the product manual. Use the original stylus for testing whenever possible.

2. Check the tablet and cables
Make sure the tablet is powered and the computer recognizes it. For a pen display, check the power adapter, USB connection, display cable, and input source. Try another known-working USB port; XP-Pen manuals specifically recommend this when the device is not detected.

3. Install or reinstall the correct driver
Download the driver for the exact model and operating system from the XP-Pen download center. Avoid leaving Wacom, Huion, older XP-Pen, or other tablet drivers installed if they conflict. After installation, restart the computer and test the pen in the XP-Pen driver before opening the drawing application.
4. Troubleshoot pressure separately
If the cursor moves, the pen is not necessarily dead. First test pressure in the XP-Pen driver. If it works there but not in your art application, check that application’s tablet-input and pressure settings, close and reopen the application, and restart the computer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On Windows, XP-Pen manuals identify Windows Ink as a setting to check when pressure works in the driver but fails in an application. Treat this as a conditional step: the correct input mode depends on the driver, operating system, and application. Do not enable or disable it blindly for every setup.

5. Inspect the nib only when appropriate
Reseat or replace a visibly worn or damaged nib if contact is inconsistent. A new nib will not fix an incompatible pen, disconnected tablet, wrong driver, or application setting. Buy the nib type specified for your stylus; nibs are not universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Replacing an XP-Pen stylus
The safest replacement is the original stylus listed for your tablet. XP-Pen’s official store pages have shown examples such as the PD21 at $39.99, PD22 at $49.99, PD51 at $39.99, PA2 at $15.99, P03 at $15.99, and selected P05/P05S configurations at $25.99 in the US store. These prices and stock can change, and options such as pen holders may affect the displayed price.
Do not choose a pen solely because it looks identical or advertises a newer pressure rating. Passive EMR pens depend on the tablet’s particular electronics. A third-party stylus is worth considering only when the manufacturer or seller explicitly names your exact XP-Pen model.

If the pen works and only the nib is worn, official replacement nibs are the more appropriate repair. A new tablet bundle makes sense only when the tablet itself is obsolete, damaged, or uneconomical to repair—not because a passive pen needs “activation.”
When to contact XP-Pen support
Contact XP-Pen support if the correct original or officially compatible stylus remains completely unresponsive after you have checked power, cables, USB ports, driver installation, and driver-level cursor or pressure testing. Also contact support when the tablet is not detected at all, the display remains without an image after cable checks, or the correct driver and manual do not match your operating system.
Have the tablet model, stylus model, operating system, driver version, connection method, and test results ready. That information helps distinguish a pen fault from a tablet, cable, driver, or application problem.
